Kuku to bag Ekiti Varsity Alumni Award on Birthday

EKITI State University, EKSU, Alumni Association will, tomorrow, bestow an award on the Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, for his numerous assistance and deep association with his alma- mater. At a meeting in Ado-Ekiti, yesterday, the national president of the association, Mr. Bola Ogunlayi, said Kuku would be the second beneficiary of the award since the inception of the association.

Aside the fact that Kuku was a students’ union leader in his days as a student of the university, Ogunlayi recounted some of the positive contributions of the special adviser, as a lawmaker in Ondo State House of Assembly and even now as a special adviser to the president, saying Kuku merited such an honour. Ogunlayi said the award tagged “Distinguished Alumnus Award” taking place at the university on Valentine's Day, February 14, would coincide with Kuku’s birthday.

Parents Withdraw Children, Wards from Ekiti Community Schools over Farmer’s Murder

Not many envisaged the dimension the incident would take. But as at yesterday, it is clear that the ripple effect of the gruesome murder of 51-year-old Mr. Ropo Eniafe, a cocoa merchant in Ilawe-Ekiti in Ekiti South West Local Government of Ekiti State, is bound to cause disquiet in the community.

Yesterday, parents and guardians withdrew their children and wards from schools, shortly after public primary and secondary schools resumed for the week. Many of the schoolchildren, who seemed innocently happy about closing only two hours after resumption, trekked home gleefully, without knowing when next they will be permitted to return to the classrooms. Many of the students returning home as early as 11.am, said they were sent home "due to what happened on Saturday".

Eniafe, father of four, was hacked down while working on his farmland on Saturday by those believed to be Fulani herdsmen, who have been unleashing terror on the people for some time now. The herdsmen have been interacting with the people of the surrounding communities, to make it easy for them to graze their cattle on the farmlands. But as it has happened in several parts of the country, the interactions have always been threatened by the anger of local farmers whose crops are often destroyed by the grazing cattle. This has expectedly caused clashes between the local farmers and the Fulani herdsmen. On many occasions, the rifts have often turned fatal.

When THISDAY visited the serene Ilawe community yesterday, it was discovered that parents and guardians were seen withdrawing their children and wards to avoid being caught in the web of the crisis. They said Eniafe’s murder could trigger a reprisal that could endanger the lives of the children, adding that they would not want their children to be caught in the envisaged crossfire.

Although, there was no noticeable tension as people were seen going about their normal businesses, the action of the parents might have been governed by threats by the youths who have vowed to avenge the killings.

But the schoolchildren are not the only ones hit by the disquiet in the community because of the murder. Even their parents, who are largely farmers, are now too scared to go to their farms, suspecting that those who killed Eniafe could be lurking somewhere for them. They too, are now idling away in the town, amidst uneasy calm.

Also, at the home of the deceased in Afunremu area yesterday, the whole area was in mourning mood as sympathisers were seen at the deceased’s house, sitting in groups apparently discussing the sad incident.

According to the deceased’s younger brother, Mr. Boluwaji Eniafe, the deceased's wife, Mrs Funke Rachael Eniafe, came to him about 9 a.m. to inform him that her husband had not returned from the farm since he left on Friday morning. This, he added, made him and others to raise a search party which later discovered the corpse of his brother somewhere on the farm in the pool of his blood. He further said that no part of his body was missing when his corpse was found.

Boluwaji lamented that his brother could have been killed by some armed robbers who had been terrorising the community in the last few weeks.

According to him, "He must have run into the armed robbers who were escaping after robbing. The robbers must have killed him based on the assumption that he must have seen them."

He said his brother never had any dispute with anybody before the ugly incident.
He alleged further that some Fulani herdsmen had in recent times been unleashing havoc on the community dispossessing the people of their money and belongings.

He appealed to the government to find the killers of his brother and put a permanent stop to the menace of robbery and the herdsmen’s terror.

While confirming the report, Police Public Relations Officer in the state police command, Victor Babayemi Olu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said that two persons had been arrested in connection with the murder. The suspects are now in police custody. But to forestall a recurrence, he said the police had taken over the security of the community.

He added that the case would be charged to court as soon as the investigations into the murder have been concluded.

UNIABUJA postpones exams due to students’ protest

The management of the University of Abuja has postponed examinations for final year students due protest by students over non-accreditation of engineering and medical courses by the National Universities Commission(NUC).

The examination, scheduled to start on Monday, could not hold because the aggrieved students locked the gate to the main campus of the institution and prevented members of staff and fellow students from entering the school.

Deputy Registrar in charge of Information, Waziri Garba, said the management met with leaders of the students’ union who requested for students to be in the hostels one week before the examination.

He stated that the management presented the matter to an emergency session of the institution’s Senate which approved that the examinations be postponed to February 18.

“The time-table committee is at present reworking the timetable which would soon be released,” Garba explained.

Trouble started as early as 8:00am when engineering and medical students, who have been at logger -heads with the university management, locked the institution’s gate.

Other students, who had reported for the examinations, were seen loitering outside the school premises in groups with armed riot policemen and soldiers standing by.

An engineering student, who did not mention his name, alleged that the management had not done enough to get the NUC to accredit the two courses, adding that the student body was tired of promises.

Husband, wife bag PhD same day in UNILAG

A couple who obtained PhD in different disciplines the same day, two brainy female students and some distinguished Nigerians stole the show at the 50th convocation of the University of Lagos.

The couple were not born the same day. Neither did they attend the same primary and secondary schools. They are also not from the same state. The husband is from, Ilaje, Ondo State while the wife is from Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Fate and love for knowledge, however, brought them together at the University of Lagos. And because they are both made for scholarship, the two were among the students and distinguished Nigerians that were celebrated at the UNILAG’s Golden Jubilee Convocation last week.

The couple made history by becoming the first couple to bag a doctorate degree same day at UNILAG. The husband, Dr. Olusegun Samuel and his wife, Temitope, were rewarded with a PhD in marine ecology and botany respectively in front of an ecstatic crowd at the Multipurpose Hall of the institution, the venue of the ceremony.

They were not the only students so honoured. Twenty-two-year-old Ibok Favour Asuquo, emerged the overall best graduating student after obtaining a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.89 to bag a first class degree in accountancy. Also, Miss Babtony Flora, who got a CGPA of 4.88 out of a possible 5.0 and bagged a first class degree in psychology was also rewarded. The two also received a standing ovation from the audience – with prizes including cash, certificates and plaques from the university.

But the audience went wild with joy as soon as the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, announced that a couple was among the 47 students that were being conferred with doctoral degrees in various disciplines at the event.

The crowd yelled, heads were turned and the couple instantly became the cynosure of all eyes at the ceremony. The audience, including the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqquayyat Rufa’I, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan; the Pro-Chancellor, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode, principal officers of UNILAG, including the Registrar, Mr. Olu Sodimu; parents, students and newsmen all wanted to catch a glimpse of the brainy couple.

In a chat with our correspondents after the award, the couple said they were able to cope in the course of the programmes because it was what they agreed to do even before their marriage.

The husband, who joined UNILAG as a lecturer in the Faculty of Science in 2007, said, “It is what we both agreed to do. I don’t feel threatened that my wife has attained the same academic feat with me. It is for the benefit of the family.”

Samuel did his PhD work on marine ecology, with a focus on ecotoxicology- the study of how poison and chemicals affect the ecosystem. His wife focused on dermatophyte, a group of fungi that causes skin diseases.

They said it took them a lot of hard work, sleepless nights, and huge financial resources to complete the programme.

“It took a lot of sacrifice. But since we were both involved, we were able to manage our time. Whenever I was not at home, my wife would be there. Again, at times, we worked so late on the campus that we did not get home until 11.00pm,” Samuel said.

Speaking on how they started their love journey, the wife said it was an Internet connectivity problem that brought them together at UNILAG.

“I was browsing in one of the offices in the department and he (her husband) walked in and complained that the Internet service on his system was behaving funny. I offered to help. That was how he took interest in me. The rest, they say, is history,” she said.

They got married on May 1, 2010 and the marriage is blessed with a baby boy.

But how did they cope combining marriage with the PhD programme? Temitope said, “We decided that we were not going to mix pleasure with business. The two don’t go together. Why should we have another baby so soon? When we got married on May 1, 2010, we both agreed on what would happen before we started our PhD programme. But now, the programme is over, we can return to that.”

She, however, added that one of her cousins was of great help to the family all through the duration of the programme.

“My cousin was always there to take care of our baby,” she said. “My husband too is excellent and supportive. He loves and always encourages me to become successful. He’s not selfish.”

Speaking on the challenges they faced while on the programme, Samuel said lack of facilities and uncooperative attitude of some private companies in Agbara Industrial Estate, where he needed samples, almost frustrated his research.

He said, “When I realised that they were not ready to open their doors for me to come into their facilities to carry out my research, I had to go to where the effluent was being discharged and took samples to the laboratory.

“Again, I also consulted some academic authorities who had done works on this field. So, I was able to do whatever I needed to do. I discovered the metal level in some organisms – like periwinkles – were higher than what the World Health Organisation prescribed,” Samuel who did his first degree at UNILAG and Master’s degree at the University of Ibadan, said.

Temitope did her first and second degrees at UNILAG. She was moved to carry out the research on skin diseases because, according to her, some skin ailments are stubborn to treat.

“They don’t really go away after treatment, due perhaps to right drugs being administered on wrong organisms,” she said.

She noted that she had taken the frontier of knowledge further by going beyond the point where medical prescriptions stopped on skin diseases in the country by her research and sought for the modern way of treatment.

“I discovered that in the country, the treatment available did not go beyond the conventional laboratory method, which involves scrapping and culturing of the skin and viewing it under the microscope. I had to research into the modern way of treatment. Treatment in modern times requires molecular laboratory method, which involves extracting the DNA from the fungus and running Polymarise Chain Research followed by the DNA sequence.”

She said the only institution that had the DNA sequential machine in the country is the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan.

The couple stressed that they would not force any course of study or career on their children.

“Nobody chose for me, so my children should be free to choose for themselves whatever career they love. I chose to be an academic; so, they should choose whatever they too like,” Samuel said.

On who his role models are, Samuel said, “I don’t have role models, but I have people that I pick certain virtues and values from. Among them is Prof. Elochukwu, dean, Postgraduate School and my supervisor, Prof. Kola Kusemiju, who is like a father figure to me, and Prof. Odiete, who supervised my Bachelor’s thesis.”

Both of them now look forward to their post-doctoral exploits. First, they will be looking for reputable journals to publish their works and, according to them, this does not come easy.

They also look forward to harnessing opportunities that the new status may bring their way.

“Definitely, getting a PhD is not the end. The next thing is to pursue post-doctoral works outside the country, because there is no facilities for such in Nigeria.

“Then, there is the need to get our findings published in a reputable journal. For some, it costs about $500 to get published. Some may say they want to publish it free, but it may take more than two years to get published. For two years, they may tell you that they are still studying your findings,” Samuel said.

22,000 Youths apply for 3,000 job Vacancies

No fewer than 22, 000 Osun State youths have applied for employment under the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme of the Federal Government.

A statement by the state Communications Officer, Sure-P, Mr. Tewogbade Latona, on Monday said only 3, 000 vacancies were available.

Dismissing the insinuation that Sure-P is a political propaganda by the Federal Government, the Chairman of the project, Dr Bayo Faforiji, said the programme was evolved in the interest of the masses.

Addressing youths who had turned up for the programme in Osogbo, Faforiji said youths would be employed for community service at various levels.

The statement said, “Sure-P is not a political propaganda. Only 3, 000 vacancies are available. Applicants are being shortlisted in a most fair process.

“The exercise is devoid of the insinuations being peddled around. The Federal Government is aware of the challenges facing the youths and it is ready to check unemployment.

Govt must enforce minimum standards in school establishment - ICPC boss

CHAIRMAN, Independent corrupt practices and Other Related Offences commission (ICPC), Mr Ekpo Nta, in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, advocated enforcement of minimum standard in terms of infrastructure for the establishment of schools, so as to curb the rot in the education sector.

The chairman of the anti-graft agency was speaking during a visit to his alma mater, St Anthony catholic basic school, molete, Ibadan, where he was the senior prefect in 1964.

He urged the ministry of education and other relevant education stakeholders to ensure that schools, most especially, the privately-owned, conformed with the national policy on education.

While frowning on the level of decayed infrastructure in the education sector, the Icpc boss said it was rare about four decades ago to see pupils in private school except those with disabilities, as the government-owned schools provided the best education.

Nta said there was the need for private individuals to invest in education, as it was a project government at any level could not handle alone.

He, however, commended the management and staff of the school for its academic standard as demonstrated by the pupils and pledged his continuous support for the school.

OAU ranks best Varsity in Nigeria, FUNNAB emerges second- Webometric Ranking

THE latest Webometric Ranking of world universities has re-affirmed the intellectual, academic, research and administrative supremacy of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, above the other universities in Nigeria.

By this new webometric ranking released on February 6, 2013, OAU was again rated as the first and the best university in Nigeria, as it moved from being number eight in Nigeria to number one and from 79 to number 14 in Africa.

A release by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, said the latest ranking reflected the success of the current administration of the institution under Professor Bamitale Omole who, at his inauguration as vice chancellor, promised to reposition OAU as a leading university in Nigeria and Africa.

The statement congratulated the vice chancellor for putting in place the policies, ideals and goals that made it possible for the institution to attain the feat.

This is just as the vice chancellor promised to further reposition the institution to meet up with the standard expected of a world class university within the context of 21st century intellectual market.

Also, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNNAB), has emerged the second best university in Nigeria.

The institution also moved from 35th to 29th position in Africa, according to the Webometric ranking of world universities.

In a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune by the institution’s Head of Public Relations, Lasun Somoye, FUNNAB came out second out of 120 institutions in the country.

This is just as the institution moved to 29th in the league of 814 higher educational institutions in Africa.

Writing a lesson plan is essential for excellent delivery and easy understanding of a topic. Many teachers in the world still make the mistake of taking classes without a plan. Due to the impact of lesson plan on knowledge delivery, it requires consideration of some factors before writing, when writing and after writing the lesson plan.

Before writing a lesson plan

To achieve anything in life, there must be a preparatory aspect. Before writing a lesson plan, it is essential that the lesson planner do the following.

Possess good mastery of the lesson topic

A good understanding of what you want to teach will not only help you to flow when teaching, it will also help you to be confident and engage your students in knowledge delivery.

Know the lesson target group

Every lesson must have a stated objective and these objectives must be realizable at the end of the class or lesson. The objective of a lesson can influence the teaching procedure. Teaching procedures and knowledge delivery should be centered on realizing the objectives of the lesson. At the end of every class, students should be able to show that these objectives have been attained. Therefore, it is essential that lessons are planned in such a way that the objectives are realized by the students.

Consider how to introduce the lesson

Introduction is the first step in selling the idea or nature of the topic of any lesson to the students. As a teacher or lesson planner, it is an avenue to engage the students in the topic being taught. In introducing a topic (in science), simple or daily life experiences that relates to the topic could be used. It could be a common event that occurs in their lives. Introduction has the power not only to engage students, but to make the students interested in listening to the teacher. Never forget it is a time to bond the topic to the student.

Consider how to engage the students

Motivation is key to maintaining an interactive or engaging classroom environment. Motivation could come from the students or from the teacher because a classroom setting is like a family setting. The teacher as the head of the class must seek ways to motivate the students because in motivating the students, the teacher is also motivating himself. This motivation, when teaching, could be in form of a smile on the face, or a clap from students to encourage their colleague. It could also take the form of an engaging classroom activity. In engaging students throughout the teaching period, an excellent teaching procedure is required coupled with engaging instructional materials.

Consider how to review/conclude the lesson

This part has to do with summarizing what has been learnt during the classroom activity. Points that students need to know could be collated. Reviewing a lesson assists students to learn in-line with the objectives of the lesson. It is also an avenue for the instructor to clear any misunderstanding they have concerning the topic. Lesson planners must consider how to conclude their lesson. A lesson should be concluded only after the objectives of that lesson have been achieved.

Consider how to assess/ evaluate the students

Assessment can be within the lesson period or outside the lesson period; but it is advisable that assessment should take place within the lesson period except when there is no time. Chinese Government Scholarship for International Students (With over 1000 courses- 2013/2014 Session)

The Chinese Government under the Chinese Government Scholarship is offering full and partial scholarship to international undergraduate and postgraduate students seeking to further their studies in over 1000 courses under areas related to science, technology, agriculture, medicine, economics, law, management, education, history, liberal arts, and philosophy. The scholarship covers benefits like exemption from registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship, fee for basic learning materials; and accommodation fee for dormitory on campus;v - Living allowance, one-off settlement subsidy after registration for new student, fee for outpatient medical service, comprehensive medical insurance and protection scheme for international students in China, one-off inter-city travel subsidy and many more.

STUDY PROGRAM: Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree.

LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION:

1. According to the regulations stipulated by MOE, all undergraduate programs for international students are instructed in Chinese. Applicants with no command of Chinese are required to take the college preparatory courses for one to two years before pursuring major studies. And only by passing the examinations of the college preparatory courses could they start their university studies.

2. Certain Chinese HEIs conduct some postgraduate programs and non-degree courses for general and senior scholars in English. Please check Directory of Chinese Higher Institutions Admitting International Students under Chinese Government Scholarship Program or visit the website of CSC for details.

CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY:

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.

2. Education background and age limit:

- Applicants for undergraduate program must have senior high school diploma with good academic performance and be under the age of 25.

- Applicants for master’s degree program must have bachelor’s degree and be under the age of 35.

- Applicants for doctoral degree program must have master’s degree and be under the age of 40.

- Applicants for Chinese language training program must have senior high school diploma and be under the age of 35.Chinese language is the only subject available.

- Applicants for general scholar program must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study and be under the age of 45. All subjects including Chinese language are available.

- Applicants for senior scholar program must have master’s degree or above, or hold academic titles of associate professor or above, and be under the age of 50.

VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP:

1. Full Scholarship

- Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship, fee for basic learning materials; and accommodation fee for dormitory on campus;v - Living allowance;

- One-off settlement subsidy after registration for new student;

- Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students in China;

- One-off inter-city travel subsidy.

Note:

1) Costs of the laboratory experiment or internship beyond the institution’s arrangements should be self-afforded.

2) Fee for basic learning materials only covers the necessary learning materials prescribed by the host institution .Other textbooks and materials shall be self-afforded.

3) Monthly allowance is granted to the students through the host institution at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):

- Undergraduates & Chinese language students: CNY 1,400 Yuan

- Master’s degree students & general scholars: CNY 1,700 Yuan

- Doctoral degree students & senior scholars: CNY 2,000 Yuan

Scholarship students shall receive their monthly living allowance after registration. New students who register before 15th (15th included) of the registration month will get the full amount of living allowance of that month, and those who register after 15th will get half amount of that month. Students upon graduation will get a living allowance for another 15 days after the graduation date set by the university. The allowance will be terminated from the following month after the students suspend their studies, drop school or complete schooling from the university. Monthly living allowance covers school holidays. Scholarship students who missed the monthly living allowance during holidays could be reimbursed upon their return on campus. The allowance will be suspended for at least one month for those students who do not register on time without permission from the university, leave for non-health reasons or are absent from university over a month.

Students who have to suspend their studies for pregnancy or for health reasons are required to go back to their home countries for labor or for treatment. The international travel expenses should be covered by the students themselves. With the university’s approval, the scholarship status can be reserved for up to one year and their living allowances will be suspended during their leave. The scholarship status will not be reserved for those who suspend their studies for other reasons.

4) New students will get a one-off settlement subsidy upon their arrival in China.

- CNY 1,000 Yuan for new students who will study in China for less than one academic year

- CNY 1,500 Yuan for new students who will study in China for one academic year and above

5) Fee for outpatient medical service refers to the outpatient expense in the institution’s hospital or the hospitals entrusted by the institution. The students are to cover a certain percentage of expense in accordance with the institution’s regulations.

6) Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students in China is provided by MOE for the scholarship students in China in case of hospitalizing for serious diseases and accidental injuries. The institutions or the entrusted medical assistance agencies provide advancement service for insurance expenses, and claim for compensation with relevant payment receipts from the insurance company according to the stipulated insurance articles. For scholarship student, the individual claim will not be accepted by the insurance company.

7) One-off inter-city travel subsidy (each for coming-in and leaving China)

A hard-seat train ticket (hard-berth train ticket for overnight trip) will be provided for scholarship students traveling.

From the port of entry upon registration to the city where the admitting institution or Chinese language training institution or preparatory education institution is located;

From the Chinese language training institution or the preparatory education institution to the city where the university for major study is located;

From the city where the institution is located to the nearest port for departure upon graduation.

Meal and excess of baggage should be self-afforded.

In principle, the port of entry is Beijing, or a port of entry near where the university is located.

2. Partial Scholarship

One or several items of full scholarship (one-off settlement subsidy and one-off inter-city travel allowance excluded).

HOW TO APPLY:

The CSC Online Application System for Study in China is available on http://laihua.csc.edu.cn .

Those who cannot apply online shall contact the dispatching authorities to get the application form and fill it truly, correctly and completely.

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS:

The applicants must fill in and provide the following documents truly, correctly and completely (in duplicate)

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship （filled in Chinese or English）

Those who are available for online application shall fill in and print the application form after submitting it online.

2. Highest diploma (notarized photocopy): Applicants shall also provide proof of studying on application. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.

3. Academic transcripts (notarized photocopy): Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.

4. A study or research plan. All applicants are required to submit a study or research plan. It must be in Chinese or in English.

5. Recommendation letters: Applicants for postgraduate studies, or study in China as senior scholars must submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors. Applicants who are already in China shall submit the Admission Notices or Invitation Letters issued by the target universities.

6. Applicants for music studies are requested to submit a CD of the applicants’ own works. Applicants for fine arts programs must submit a CD of the applicants’ own works (including two sketches, two color paintings and two other works).

7. Applicants under the age of 18 should submit the legal documents of their legal guardians in China.

8. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (the original copy should be kept by the applicant. The form printed by Chinese quarantine authority could be downloaded from http://www.csc.edu.cn). The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take medical examination as it is valid for only 6 months.

The above documents should be forwarded to CSC by April 30th, 2013, via either the Chinese diplomatic mission in the applicant’s home country or the embassy of the applicant’s home country in China. Individual applications are not accepted by CSC. Application documents will not be returned.

SELECTION OF INSTITUTIONS AND SPECIALTIES:

Applicants can choose one academic program and three institutions as their preferences from the Chinese HEIs designated by MOE. Please check the Directory of Chinese Higher Institutions Admitting International Students under Chinese Government Scholarship Program. Only the listed Chinese HEIs in the Directory are available to the applicants for their study in China.

APPROVAL AND NOTIFICATION:

1. CSC will assess all the application documents and CSC reserves the right to make necessary adjustments on the proposed institutions, specialties and duration of study. The qualified applications will be forwarded to institutions for academic competence and they will forward their nominations to CSC for approval. The applications will be regarded as invalid and will not be accepted if they fail to meet the enrollment requirements or the application documents are incomplete.

2. If overseas applicants for degree programs with exemption of examinations are academically ineligible to the proposed programs, the institution reserves the right to decide the academic program they could attend or whether to give them conditional offers for their proposed programs. Students who attend Chinese language courses prior to their university study or those attend the college preparatory program must pass the university entrance examinations or other examinations required before they start their major studies. Students attending the college preparatory program, while failing to pass the required examinations within the set period, shall complete their study as Chinese language students.

3. Applicants are required to enclose the admission notice from Chinese HEIs, if they have, in the documents submitted to CSC.

4. Scholarship applicants academically accepted by Chinese HEIs will be officially awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship with the approval from CSC.

5. Students are not permitted, in principle, to apply to change their specialties, institutions or the duration of study as specified in the Admission Notice.

6. CSC will send the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW201) to the candidates through dispatching authorities by July 31st, 2013.

1. DRINK MODERATELY

Wine Drinking

It is a known fact that over consumption of alcohol has a negative effect on brain cells related to memory. Although, Moderate drinkers have been found to perform better on a test of cognitive abilities than non-drinkers and heavy drinkers (Source: Minerd). Red wine which contains flavanols have been found to help with memory improvement. For people who have no problem with alcohol consumption, it is advisable to have not more than 1 glass a day for women and 2 per day for men.

2. ACTIVELY ENGAGE IN EXERCISE

Excercise

One major truth about exercise is that not only does it exercise the body, it also exercises the brain. Physical activity and aerobic exercises have been found to enhance older adults’ cognitive function(source: Wikipedia). For the brain to remain active, it needs oxygen and nutrient from the blood stream. To ensure that blood flows to the brain, you need to engage in exercise. Exercises can also make you more alert and relaxed, thereby improving your memory uptake.

The scholarship is for international students seeking Postgraduate and Post-doctoral Studies. CATEGORIES OF STUDY: Postgraduate and Post-doctoral Studies.

ELIGIBLITY CRITERIA: To be eligible for Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS), applicants must fit the following criteria:

Not be more than 40 years of age during application.
Obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0 at Bachelor Degree Level for Masters Degree applicants and for PhD candidates must possess CGPA 3.5/4.0 or very good result at Masters degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study. In addition, for post-doctoral programme, the selection will be evaluated based on the number of books produced, refereed/non refereed journals, portfolio and patent copyright. The Post-Doctoral candidate must have excellent reputation in research and possesses knowledge related to the research to be carried out.
Took one of the following English Language Proficiency Test not more than two years before the date of application. The list of tests and minimum scores required:
IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5; or
TOEFL paper-based test with a score of at least 580 or computer-based test with a score of at least 230 or internet-based test with a score at least 92.
In excellent health condition and certified by a Certified Doctor/Medical Professional. The cost of medical examination is to be borne by the applicants.
Write a proposal that is relevant to the needs and interests of Malaysia (research-based programme only).

GENERAL CONDITION OF AWARD:

Scholarship holder must undertake full-time studies for postgraduate and post-doctoral studies at a campus of Malaysian Universities.It is the responsibility of the scholarship holders to confirm admission to the university.
Scholarship holders must not change their programme during tenure of the scholarship except with written permission from their university and the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.
Scholarship holders must follow the approved programmes and abide by the university’s rules, regulations and codes of conduct.
Any suspension from the university will result in immediate suspension of award. Monthly allowances are not payable during suspension, including suspension due to illness.
It is the responsibility of successful candidates to apply for and meet the requirements for the issuing of an appropriate entry visa including medical examination. The offer of the scholarship does not guarantee the granting of a visa.
Scholarship holders must maintain satisfactory progress and good standing as stipulated by their host university and degree programme, or the scholarship will be withdrawn.
The scholarships are tenable in Malaysian universities and research must be carried out in Malaysia.
Scholarship holders are not allowed to take any paid employment during their tenure unless with written approval from the host university.

The Heinrich Böll Foundation grants scholarships to approximately 1,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students of all subjects and nationalities per year, who are pursuing their degree at universities, universities of applied sciences, or universities of the arts.

Fake Certificate Scandal Rocks FRCN

SAN FRANCISCO, January 08, (THEWILL) – An official of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, has revealed that the former director general of the outfit, Barrister Yusuf Nuhu employed staffs holding forged certificates during the recent recruitment exercise held in December 2012.

According to him, “Using fake or forged certificates to gain employment has become the norm in the FRCN because some of the staffs employed in the recent past in Kano State for Pyramid Radio Fm and Companion Fm in Katsina did not present genuine certificates.”

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official who is a staff of FRCN Kaduna revealed that “Staffs posted to these stations in Kano and Katsina brought certificates from universities that nobody recognizes.”

The official further claimed that similar cases have occurred in the FRCN station in Kano because one of the newly engaged staffs had not even attended any university, but submitted a certificate from an institution but our investigations revealed that the certificate was given her at Sabon Gari, Kano by a ‘consultant’ who is a specialist in the provision of fake certificates.

“Even recently we discovered that a marketing officer at the Kano FM station who once worked with us used a certificate from Ado Bayero University, Kano where he claimed to have graduated.”

According to him, “There is the serious need for the federal government’s intervention into the employment procedures at the radio stations because the management of those stations are employing people without verifying the genuineness of their certificates”.

The source further added that “Many staffs with fake certificates were employed on grade level 08 but we all knew the credentials they presented are complete forgeries and we are hoping that investigations into this issue will commence soon so as weed out those with fake certificates.”

Left with no alternative to end this corrupt practice than to go public, the staff appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately set up a commission to delve into the issue and fish out those wielding fake and forged certificates and ensure that only those with genuine certificates are employed by the FRCN.

Attempts to contact the Director General Nuhu proved abortive while officials of the FRCN zonal office in Kaduna also remained tight lipped though an unofficial source told us that “The issue of certificate forgery is seriously worrying the genuine staffs,” but will say nothing further.

UNIBEN Professor Announces Alleged Cure for HIV/ AIDS

Benin - Prof. Isaiah Ibeh of the University of Benin, on Tuesday announced the development of a new drug that can cure HIV and AIDS.

Ibeh, who is the Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences of the university, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin that the herbal drug had undergone ``series of successful tests''. ``We are at the threshold of making history, in the sense that we seem to have with us something that will permanently take care of what over time seems to have defied all solutions.

``We are talking about the latest discovery of an oral drug made from plants extraction in Nigeria for the possible cure of the pandemic, HIV and AIDS virus.’’

Confronting HIV/AIDS

According to him, research on the project was started in 2010 and culminated in the development of ``Deconcotion X (DX)–Liquid or Bioclean 11 for the cure of HIV and AIDS''.

``The existing retroviral drugs are intervention drugs for the management of AIDS but our new discovery is a possible cure.

``We have tried to look at the product first; its toxicological analysis and discovered that it has a large safety margin. ``This means that if animals or human beings are exposed to it, they will not suffer any serious harm at all from the exposure.

``It also helped us to know the quantity we can conveniently give to animals and will feel secure that nothing untoward will happen.

``We have also done the bacteriological analysis on it, after which we looked at its effect on the virus and the result was quite revealing and refreshing.''

Ibeh also said that the drug had been exposed to series of medical examination both in Nigeria and in the USA. He added that the drug had performed well on patients with the HIV virus and had shown evidence of total restoration of damaged tissues.

``The result showed an increase in the body weight of the individual administered with DX. ``The body weight was statistically significant when compared with the control group.''

He said that further tests were being conducted to determine ``at what point will a patient become negative after being administered the drug?''.

``This verification is necessary because it is what is used to measure whether infection is still there or not. So we need to know the siro-convention time.

``But preliminary results showed that of the five latest patients orally administered with the drugs, our findings is that up to seven months , three of them were siro negative while two were sill faintly positive.’’

Ibeh appealed for support from the Federal Government and relevant bodies to assist the university with relevant equipment to sustain the research.
