Legalization of Crypto in India

As the worldwide consumer base of cryptocurrencies has reached 200 million, the Indian crypto sector has seen a record increase in the number of crypto adopters. Future of Indian Cryptocurrency

Despite the fact that the banking prohibition on Indian cryptocurrency exchange was overturned by the Supreme Court on the grounds of proportionality, ICICI bank’s newest decision occurred after the RBI urged the bank informally to cease crypto-related operations.

“We are simply following the RBI recommendations provided to us,” an HDFC Bank official, who did not want to be identified, told Inc42. Our options are limited until and unless the regulator changes its attitude on cryptocurrency.”

When asked why the RBI appears to be risking obstruction of justice, a senior officer informed Inc42 that he was unaware of ICICI Bank’s new move, but that the central bank has the authority to restrict any method that may affect the Indian currency in any manner. In light of the fact that the finance ministry has said that cryptocurrencies have no inherent value and are not supported by any asset, the RBI must constantly monitor INR conversions to cryptocurrencies. The RBI official further stated that bitcoin as well as other cryptocurrencies’ values are highly unstable and speculative in nature. The RBI cannot manage to battle on several fronts at a time when the nation’s economy is struggling (mainly owing to the ongoing epidemic and recession).

The Ministry of Finance is Ultimately Responsible

The Indian government delivered another bombshell earlier this year when it announced that the Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021, will be tabled in the Legislature’s Budget Session. The Bill’s goal is to make all private cryptocurrencies illegal in India and to set up a legislative regime for the RBI to create official digital money. The Bill would, however, allow for some exclusions in order to promote cryptocurrency’s fundamental technology and applications.

Despite the controversy surrounding the Bill, it was not tabled in Parliament. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman later stated on March 5 that the government was in negotiations with the RBI and will take a cautious stance on the issue.

As per Sitharaman, technology is moving at a breakneck pace throughout the world, and India cannot afford to stand still. India has blazed a trail in the fintech industry, and many countries are seeking to follow in its footsteps.

However, start-up advocacy groups including IndiaTech.org, IAMAI, Blockchain and Crypto Assets Council (BACC), and others are in regular contact with finance government authorities to discuss ways to improve the Indian crypto industry’s clarity, openness, and transparency.

Nischal Shetty, the President and Chairman of WazirX, a crypto platform and trading platform currently owned by Binance, claimed that India is no more a niche industry but a rapidly developing financial sector during a webinar hosted by IAMAI and BACC. Despite the rise in cryptocurrency usage, the country lags behind others in terms of the regulatory framework and the range of potential crypto businesses. India requires its own crypto unicorns and more stringent laws, and the country must push its entrepreneurs to develop for cryptocurrency.

The Supreme Court’s Legal Battles Aren’t Over Yet

The Supreme Court ruled in March 2020 in the matter of RBI vs IAMAI and other similar issues involving the RBI notification dated April 6, 2018. However, the legality of cryptocurrencies in India is still being challenged. The supreme court is presently considering the PILs lodged by Siddharth Dalmia and Vijay Pal Dalmia on October 31, 2017, and Dwaipayan Bhowmick on November 6, 2017, challenging the Indian government for not prohibiting cryptocurrency in India.

The Supreme Court agreed to defer the Bhowmick and Dalmia cases for 12 weeks after bringing the testimony on February 8, 2021, just after the Indian government’s attorney general, Tushar Mehta, notified the court that a bill to that consequence had already been submitted in Parliament. If the Bill is enacted, the Supreme Court is unlikely to overturn it.

The future of cryptocurrency in India is still up in the air, but Vivek Kathpalia, head of Nishith Desai Associates’ Singapore office and technological advancements law leader, summed it up nicely during an IAMAI webinar: “India and Singapore are both beginning to emerge as fintech hubs, and we hope that regulatory framework in India will snag up with global best practices soon.”

While a number of international players are looking at ways to enter the Indian market, the digital currency has yet to get formal approval. According to a business report, Kraken, Bitfinex, and KuCoin are racing to be the first to launch on the subcontinent, aftermarket leader Binance. Binance bought WazirX, a home cryptocurrencies start-up that allows consumers to buy and sell bitcoin using Indian rupees via the Binance Fiat Gateway, in 2019. Coinbase, a US-based alternative, has also announced intentions for an Indian back-office. Kraken, Bitfinex, and KuCoin are all among the top 10 exchanges in the world, according to the data portal CoinMarketCap, which ranks them based on traffic, liquidity, and the reliability of reported purchase and sale volumes. “The Indian market is huge, and it’s just getting started. By now, if there had been more coverage certainty, Indian customers would have been spoiled for choice in terms of exchanges since everyone wants to be right here,” said Kumar Gaurav, the founder of digital banking institution Cashaa. However, given the federal government has yet to set out a transparent method to legalize cryptocurrencies, it will not be simple.

Rumors are swirling once again that Apple has made a substantial investment in Bitcoin — but it’s too early to crack open the champagne yet. Way too early.

We’ve seen excitable tweets in recent days claiming that the tech giant has purchased up to $2.5 billion of the cryptocurrency.

There are two problems with this: First, we haven’t had any official confirmation from Apple. Second, such speculation has done the rounds on Crypto Twitter multiple times in recent months… and a purchase has never materialized.

Although MicroStrategy has betted big on Bitcoin, it seems that many publicly listed companies have been reluctant to take the plunge themselves. Even Tesla appeared to get cold feet after announcing it was going to stop accepting Bitcoin as a payment method (however, it does continue to hold more than $1 billion of crypto on its balance sheet.)

Would Apple Buy Bitcoin?

There’s little doubt that such an announcement would give Bitcoin a huge price boost, but the digital asset’s energy use — and ongoing drama surrounding regulation — probably means that the iPhone manufacturer will want to continue sitting on the sidelines for now.

Bitcoin proponents have argued that it would be an excellent use of massive cash pile that Apple is sitting on right now. But as Alexander Ross noted on Twitter:

“Apple don’t do anything controversial. They’re very brand conscious. Bitcoin does not at this juncture fit with its brand ethos. I would love nothing more, but it’s too rebellious a move for them and too many opportunities for people to use it against them.”

The past month and a half has been bumpy for Bitcoin.

After a bully first quarter of 2021 that led to an all-time peak of $63,000 per unit in mid-April, the world's leading digital currency has since lost more than 40% of its value, settling at just over $35,000 on Friday, May 28.

Holdout investors who only a couple of months ago may have thought they’d missed an opportunity of a lifetime are now sighing with relief; meanwhile, those who bought in at the peak are trying not to think about their losses.

And what about Warren Buffett? What would world's most famous investor say to those who might be thinking of firing up their investment apps and buying Bitcoin at a bargain price.

It’s “probably rat poison squared,” Buffett once said.

'Contrary to the interests of civilization'

While Buffett chose not to comment on cryptocurrency during his company Berkshire Hathaway's annual shareholders meeting earlier this month, Berkshire vice-chairman Charlie Munger pulled no punches on the subject.

"I don’t welcome a currency that’s so useful to kidnappers and extortionists," Munger said during the meeting's much-watched Q&A session. "The whole damn development is disgusting and contrary to the interests of civilization."

Not to be outdone, Buffett has made his share of extremely cutting remarks about Bitcoin and cryptocurrency over the years: “I don't have any Bitcoin. I don't own any cryptocurrency, I never will,” he told CNBC in 2020.

Here are three reasons Buffett won’t go near it.

1. He doesn’t think crypto counts as money

As a tradeable asset, Bitcoin boomed. But does it meet the three criteria of money? According to the most common definition, money is supposed to be a means of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account.

But Buffett calls it a “mirage.”

“It does not meet the test of a currency,” the billionaire said on CNBC in 2014. “It is not a durable means of exchange, it's not a store of value.”

He adds that it’s a very effective way of anonymously transmitting money. But: “a check is a way of transmitting money too,” he said. “Are checks worth a whole lot of money just because they can transmit money?”

2. He doesn’t understand it

Buffett became one of the most successful investors in history by sticking with stocks he understands.
"I get in enough trouble with things I think I know something about. Why in the world should I take a long or short position in something I don't know anything about?”
But people like to gamble, he told CNBC after a 2018 Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, which is another problem with nonproductive assets.
“If you don’t understand it, you get much more excited than if you understand it. You can have anything you want to imagine if you just look at something and say, ‘that’s magic.’”

3. It has ‘no unique value at all’

The billionaire investor doesn’t like Bitcoin because he considers it an unproductive asset.

Buffett has a well-known preference for stocks of corporations whose value — and cash flow — come from producing things. But cryptocurrencies don’t have real value, Buffett said in a CNBC interview in 2020.

“They don't reproduce, they can't mail you a check, they can't do anything, and what you hope is that somebody else comes along and pays you more money for them later on, but then that person's got the problem.”

Though Bitcoin is intended to provide real value as a payment system, that use is still pretty limited. As Buffett sees it, Bitcoin’s value comes from the optimism that someone else will be willing to pay more for it in the future than you’re paying today.

The Beginning

I first heard about Bitcoin way back when I was studying for my Masters, but lost track of it when I started full-time work. It wasn’t until March 2017 that my interest was piqued again – I dug into the crypto space and liked what I was reading: decentralised decision making, democratisation of wealth – exactly what I’m fascinated about.

I didn’t have time to properly research the particular currency that my friend recommended (you might know it by now, it’s called Ether), but I was too interested to sit still. Knowing it was a decision of my heart and not my head, I invested an amount that I could afford to lose completely: 2500 CHF.

With disbelief, over the course of a few weeks, I saw my money jump by 600 percent. Fuelled by this, I invested 2500 CHF in another currency called NEO. Then promptly forgot about it all.

The Context

At the same, I was working 16 hours a day launching Inyova. To say that I had my plate full is an understatement. I didn’t have time to check my crypto investments, but I was also determined not to start trading. Instead, I wanted to take a “buy and hold” strategy with a longer-term view. Thus, I completely forgot about my cryptowallet.

Come November, cryptocurrency was taking the world by storm. The topic was sucked into the media’s never-ending 24-hour news cycle. My friends talked about it at length. On a trip across the city, my taxi driver passionately told me his theory around it.

Obviously, I began to check my wallet. Every couple of weeks first. Then every few days. My stock was growing daily and my interest was resurrected.

Up until this point, I had used an investment strategy similar to the one that made Warren Buffet a billionaire: Buy stocks, and then do nothing, safe in the knowledge that you will make a profit if you hang onto your investment long-term. But over Christmas, I had more time on my hands.

My mind got sucked in.

The Turning Point

I’d like to remind you that I didn’t really know what I was doing. I had no in-depth technical knowledge of cryptocurrency. I had simply put my money into a vision and suddenly my assets were multiplying. But working in a startup, and seeing what kind of companies got billion-dollar valuations, I was growing suspicious that things would go down soon (remember the Year 2000 Dotcom Bubble, anybody?).

When the first crypto dip came in late December, I felt my heart drop. Is this the bubble popping? I pulled out 15,000 CHF and patted myself on the back. No matter what happened next, I had made a profit. Then I started to implement a weekly profit shaving algorithm – I took some of my earnings, but kept the capital investment in.

Then one thing led to another. I started to trade. It was Christmas, I had time on my hands, and I started shifting money around. Guess what? I made less than if I hadn’t touched my assets… and it completely ruined my holidays. You can be cold as ice, but when large amounts of money are at stake, you will get emotionally invested.

I continued to gamble until the market got very unpredictable, weird even. There were so many crypto projects that it was nearly impossible to make sense of anything.

The End

By January, I was exhausted. I had taken a break from my intense startup life and instead I was burning myself out trading crypto. More and more, the market seemed to mirror my mind – not making sense and consumed by the thought of quick profits.

Returning to work after the break, I noticed crypto was still distracting me. It was time to get out. I decided to sell everything. In the end, I made a good amount of money – but more importantly, I learned some very valuable lessons.

What I learned from Investing in Cryptocurrency

Lesson 1: Develop a sound strategy and stick to it

I did great with my crypto investments – until I decided to “try things out”. At first, I had a long-term investment strategy with little hassle and no emotional involvement. Then I left my strategy behind, buying and selling things left and right without knowing what I was doing. My emotions came into play and started making decisions on behalf of my brain. This was tiring, and ineffective. I developed strategies and quickly trashed them for the next strategy because I was “anticipating” what the market would do. Guess what, I wasn’t. The new strategy was never better than the old one. For investors, discipline is key. If you have a strategy, stick to it. This protects you from fear-based, irrational decisions.

Lesson 2: You will follow the market

Markets are characterised by different levels of sophistication. If there’s more professional investors and algorithms active in the market, it becomes more difficult to ‘outsmart’ the market. The crypto market is not particularly sophisticated compared to the stock market. Neither am I particularly stupid or emotional. However, in the end, no matter what I did, I found it difficult to get ahead of the market. Of course, there are people who make good money trading. But these are experienced traders from other markets or algorithms that have been calibrated in the crypto market for years. Remember, when someone wins on a trade, somebody else loses – that means you have to be better than half the market to make money. As a beginner, trading is a casino. Of course, you can put in the time and learn how to trade. But it is sweat, blood, and tears – just like getting to the top of any other profession.

Lesson 3: Don’t feed the troll inside you

As a long-term meditator, I am lucky enough to be able to see the moving of my mind without getting too identified with it. Generally speaking, what one pays attention to and emotionally invests in, grows in importance. I saw this very clearly in crypto. I didn’t make more money, and nothing changed about the market at Christmas. But checking my crypto assets made it the most consuming thing in my life. And all of the sudden, there was the urge to act – even though I had initially gone in with a long-term view. If you run a long-term strategy, it’s important not to check the status of your investment every day, or even every week. It’s not needed and will just distract you from other things important to you. That’s why at Inyova we don’t knock on short-term updates of your strategy.

Conclusions

My first cryptocurrency investment adventure was a roller coaster driven by Fear Of Missing Out.

The interesting thing is that nobody has come up yet with a good model to evaluate cryptocurrency projects in the long run. It’s all sentiment. That’s why the market is through the roof. Some people say it’s like money, it has no value. But not all crypto is Bitcoin – it’s not only money without any value. It’s about distributing assets and leaving the trust assurance to everybody who owns the token, rather than trusting a third party. With this in mind, you could tokenise the ownership of anything.

There may be a future in cryptocurrency – I am no fortune teller, but it looks promising. In saying that, the technology is in a very immature state, and I wouldn’t consider it a sensible investment. It’s possible that large parts of the landscape will die soon, similar to the dot-com bubble in the early 2000s. Amazon and Google were around before the bubble burst and are now among the largest companies in the world. But how were you meant to know that Amazon was going to be a big success story? Diversify your savings. If you believe in crypto, put some money in it – but unless you want to take a massive risk, it’s sensible to also invest in traditional assets.

Elon Musk made waves in February when he announced that Tesla was buying $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin and accepting the world’s most popular cryptocurrency as payment for its vehicles — yet another first for Musk in the auto industry.

The revolution was short-lived.

What is often left out of the discussion about Bitcoin is how terrible it is for the environment. The powerful, specialized computers that are needed to mine Bitcoin gobble up enormous amounts of energy, which is why most of it is mined in China, where electricity is dirt cheap and regulations are lax. Tesla — a company whose entire brand is rooted in sustainable energy — dropped its Bitcoin bid about three months later. Musk cited environmental concerns and the huge volume of fossil fuels that must be burned to produce a single coin. On May 12, Musk’s mea culpa wiped $365 billion from the cryptocurrency market in a single day.

But not all companies share Musk’s concern with green energy. Bitcoin is big and getting bigger, with some of the biggest corporations in America jumping on the bandwagon and accepting Bitcoin as payment. Here are the top 10 players in the game.

Microsoft

Microsoft became an early adopter of Bitcoin in 2014 when it began accepting the cryptocurrency as payment for games, apps and other digital content for platforms like Windows Phone and Xbox. Bitcoin was still largely unknown in 2014 and many of those who were familiar heard about it for all the wrong reasons. It was a year of drama and scandal, with the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox, collapsing into bankruptcy after a flurry of frauds, hacks and incidents that saw hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Bitcoins lost. At that time, a bar in New York City accepted Bitcoin, so did a few car services and restaurants, but very few other major companies to speak of — except for two.

PayPal

If anyone was going to beat Microsoft to the punch, it makes sense that it would be the company that blazed the trail for modern digital payments. Microsoft began accepting Bitcoin at the end of 2014 in December — three months after PayPal got on board in September. Back then, Bitcoin was trading as XBT instead of BTC. As a testament to how unfamiliar the concept was then, CNN described Bitcoin as “an independent, government-less currency.” PayPal’s move was intended to draw businesses to its platform, not consumers. That draw was that Bitcoin’s transaction fees were far lower than the profit-killing 2%-3% charge that businesses were paying for credit card transactions.

Overstock

Before Microsoft went crypto, and even before PayPal, Overstock.com was blazing the trail that those giants would follow. As early as 2018, CNN was reporting that Overstock was “basically a crypto company now,” an exaggeration based on the online retailer’s heavy investment in blockchain technology. By that time — before COVID boosted Overstock to its current status as one of the hottest e-commerce platforms in the world — it was already a Bitcoin veteran. In January 2014 — a full nine months before PayPal took the plunge in September of that same year and nearly a year before Microsoft — Overstock became the first major retailer to accept Bitcoin as payment.

Whole Foods

In May 2019, a cryptocurrency dam broke when a payments startup called Flexa joined forces with Gemini, a digital currency company owned by the Facebook-famous Winklevoss twins. The partnership’s platform allowed big retailers to incorporate Flexa into the digital scanners they were already using to accept phone-based payments through Apple Pay and other digital wallets. The technology instantly converted Bitcoins into dollars for seamless purchases. One of the first of those big retailers to adopt the technology was Whole Foods. Whole Foods is owned by Amazon, but Amazon itself does not, as of now, accept Bitcoin for purchases made through the world’s largest online retailer.

Etsy

Etsy itself doesn’t have a platform for accepting Bitcoin as payment sitewide, but the independent sellers who populate its platform can accept crypto in their individual shops if they choose. It’s up to the seller to add an “other” payment method option at checkout. When buyers click that option, they’ll be able to message the buyer with their payment preferences — Bitcoin, in this case. The seller then responds with a Bitcoin address to complete the transaction. The Etsy Community forum has a special page dedicated to Bitcoin with tutorials that explain how sellers can advertise that they accept Bitcoin and how to make the process go smoothly.

Starbucks

In March 2020, just as masks began covering faces across America and the world, Starbucks announced it was joining the Bitcoin revolution — kind of. Like Etsy, Starbucks dipped its toes in the water instead of diving right into accepting crypto as cash. You can’t pay for your Frappuccinos with Bitcoin at the register, but you can add Bitcoin — along with things like gift card balances and frequent-flyer miles — to the Starbucks app and pay that way. That upgrade was made possible by a third-party digital wallet app called Bakkt that converts Bitcoin to dollars to make payments not just possible, but instantaneous.

Newegg

Online electronics giant Newegg accepts Bitcoin — and they’ve gone all-in. Unlike some of the others that require you to convert crypto to cash through an app or third-party service, Newegg just lets you pay outright. For shoppers who are buying through a computer, all they have to do is choose “Pay With Bitcoin'' and go through the motions of shipping. For shoppers making purchases with their phones, Newegg will send a QR code to scan. For anyone who’s looking to get started harvesting Bitcoins on their own, Newegg also sells cryptocurrency mining starter kits.

Twitch

Twitch is the 800-pound gorilla on the streaming video platform block. Like Whole Foods, Twitch is owned by Amazon. Also like Whole Foods, it now accepts cryptocurrency — and not just Bitcoin. Users can pay in Bitcoin, but also Bitcoin Cash and Ether, as well as lesser-used coins like BUSD, PAX, GUSD, USDC, and XRP. Twitch was one of the earliest adopters of crypto, adding it as a payment option in 2014. That, however, ended in 2019 when Twitch quietly removed its Bitcoin service. In June 2020, however, Twitch brought that capability back to the delight of its crypto-conscious users.

Home Depot

Home Depot, too, is using the Winklevoss/Flexa system — the same one that allowed Whole Foods to accept Bitcoin through its own digital scanners without investing in new hardware. Retailers have to submit balance sheets in dollars no matter what form of payment they accept, which was long a big stumbling block for companies that wanted to accept Bitcoin but didn’t know how. Flexa converts Bitcoin to dollars instantaneously, which gives both parties what they want. The buyer gets to spend their Bitcoins when they buy their paint and Ryobi tools, and Home Depot gets the green dollars they require in exchange.

Rakuten

Japanese cashback/shopping site Rakuten began letting users choose Bitcoin as a payment option in 2015. As part of a global Bitcoin rollout, the company started with Rakuten.com in the U.S. before expanding the new service to its counterparts in Germany and Austria. Rakuten made it possible by integrating the Bitnet payment processing platform into its own marketplaces. It has since developed Rakuten Wallet, which has expanded to support altcoins like Bitcoin Cash and Ethereum. Users can now charge their Rakuten Cash balance using crypto assets.

Steve Wozniak Is Not Necessarily Invested but Still Believes Bitcoin Is an ‘Amazing Mathematical’ Creation

Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak is a fan of bitcoin and he’s mentioned the subject on numerous occasions over the years. Back in August 2018, Wozniak revealed he was participating with a crypto startup and spoke highly about bitcoin.

“It’s so independent,” Wozniak said at the time. “It’s kind of like the internet when it was brand new… I was amazed at the technology behind it,” Wozniak added. Still months before the internet comparison, Wozniak told an audience at the Nordic Business Forum in Sweden that he wasn’t obsessed with bitcoin either.

“I had bitcoin to experiment with and when it shot up high, I said, ‘I don’t want to become one of those people that watches it, watches it and cares about the number,’” Wozniak said at the time.

Speaking at the Talent Land Jalisco 2021 event this week, Wozniak had a similar outlook and highlighted that he doesn’t invest in bitcoin. Even this system was inadequate to keep up with the demand. Meanwhile, many new machines were invented like the steam engine, the spinning jenny, cotton gin and power loom. So, a new system of production called factory system arose. The workers went to work in a building called factory owned by a capitalist. Production was carried on with the help of a large number of machines mainly run by steam power. This shif tof production by machines led to the advent of ‘machine age’. Production multiplied many times. The series of industrial and technological changes that bagan in the late 18^th century, resulting in cheap and efficient mass production of different types of goods came to be known as Industrial Revolution.

As a result of Industrial revolution, rate of production went up. New goods were produced. More people were able to afford goods which were terme as luxury goods. There are large scale migration of people from villages to towns as emplyment opportunities expanded, wages increased and more leisure time was aavailable. As people crowded in towns, their living conditions became deplorable with problems of housing and sanitation. Poor sewarage system led to epidemics. Women and children were employed in large number in factories with no safety standards. Men, women and children worked long hours for poor wages. There was no security of jobs and if the machines went out of order, the workers had to work even longer hours. The industrial revolution brought nations together through developments in the transport and communication.

1. Coal

It is used not only to produce steam power but also to generate electricity. In the first half of 20^th century, coal used to account for over 90% of the world power requirement but in later half of 20^th century, the use of coal declined considerably because of several reasons.

Coal is a sedimentary rock which is formed from the remains of decayed plants and trees. Based on its carbon content, coal is divided into four types-

Anthracite – it contains more than 90% carbon and emits very little smoke on burning.

Bituminous – it contains nearly 70% carbon content and is the most common type, making up nearly 80% of the known reserve.

Lignite – it contains only 40% of carbon since it contains a large amount of moisture. It is not found suitable for use in industries.

Peat – it consists of partially decomposed vegetable matter. It is hard to burn as it emits little heat and a great deal of smoke.

USA is the leading producer of coal in the world. But, most of their coal is of bituminous quality. Russia is another very important producer of coal. Major coalfields lie in Siberia, Urals and Moscow region. Ukraine is another very important producer of coal. Coal mining states in China are Shansi, Honan Shantung and Hunan. UK also produces high quality of coal at Durham, New Castle, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Derby and South Wales. Similarly, Ruhr Basin and Rhine Basin of Germany produce good quantity of coal. India, has mostly bituminous coal; the state of west Bengal, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra and Andhra Pradesh are the leading producers. Lignite is found mostly in Tamil Nadu.

Water power is generated by the force of falling water in hydroelectric power stations. This can be transported by transmission lines. The generation of hydroelectric power does not create pollution like Thermal power plants. Hydroelectricity is gaining importance because water is an inexhaustible resource. It is a clean energy too as it does not pollute the environment. Another advantage of this energy is its cheapness. It involves no cost in transport. Its transmission through wires makes it easily available to houses and mills. However, it cannot be stored for future. So, markets should be readily available for its consumption. Some physical activity is better than none. By becoming more active by the day in relatively simple ways, people can easily achieve the recommended activity levels. It was started when U.S.-based Professor Mr. Leszek Sibilski initiated a grassroots campaign with his sociology class to promote a U.N. resolution that would designate a day for the advocacy and celebration of the bicycle all over the world. In 2015, Sibilski dedicated himself to an academic project, exploring bicycles and their role in development. His project catapulted into a massive movement by ‘Sustainable Mobility for All,’ and eventually resulted in a dedicated international day set by the United Nations for the promotion of bicycling. On April 12, 2018, the resolution declaring June 3 as World Bicycle Day was unanimously adopted by all 193 member states of the UN General Assembly. The resolution was greatly supported by Turkmenistan and co-sponsored by other 56 countries.

A logo was also designed by Mr. Isaac Feld, with an accompanying animation created by Professor John E. Swanson, showing bicyclists riding on various types of bicycles whole around the world. The message here is that a simple contraption serves all of humanity and bridges the gap between people from different walks of life. The two designers also created the current blue and white logo for the cause.

3. अगर लंबे वक्त तक स्टेरॉइड्स दिए जाएं तो लोग ब्लैक फंगस की चपेट में आ सकते हैं।

कुछ दवाइयां भी बहुत सावधानी से देनी चाहिए ताकि वो फंगल इन्फेक्शन का कारण न बने क्योंकि ये दवाइयां इम्यूनिटी सिस्टम को कमजोर करती हैं। बिना डॉक्टरी सलाह के स्टेरॉइड लेना खतरनाक हो सकता है। स्टेरॉइड बिल्कुल उचित मात्रा में लें और कम-से-कम समय तक लें। लेकिन ब्लड शुगर कंट्रोल में नहीं हो तो डॉक्टर से बिना पूछे स्टेरॉइड लेना नहीं छोड़ें।
रोकथाम के उपाय---

बीमारी को जितनी जल्दी पहचानेंगे इसका इलाज उतना ही सफल होगा। ब्लैक फंगस की रोकथाम के लिए तीन चीजें बहुत महत्वपूर्ण हैं। पहला शुगर कंट्रोल बहुत अच्छा होना चाहिए, दूसरा हमें स्टेरॉयड कब देने हैं इसके लिए सावधान रहना चाहिए और तीसरा स्टेरॉयड की हल्की या मध्यम डोज देनी चाहिए।

1. शुगर कंट्रोल- खून में चीनी की मात्रा बढ़ने नहीं दें। जो लोग डायबिटिक हैं, उन्हें अपने ब्लड शुगर को नियंत्रित रखने का अतिरिक्त प्रयास करना चाहिए।

जो डायबिटिक नहीं हैं, लेकिन नियमित तौर पर स्टेरॉइड्स ले रहे हैं, उन्हें अपना ब्लड शुगर हमेशा चेक करते रहना चाहिए।

2. स्टेरॉइड के बेजा इस्तेमाल से परहेज - स्टेरॉइड देने से बचें। अगर जरूरत पड़े तो कम डोज दें। इस तरह की दूसरी दवाइयां भी तभी दी जाएं जब बहुत जरूरी हों।

ध्यान रहे केंद्रीय स्वास्थ्य मंत्री डॉ. हर्षवर्धन ने गुरुवार को ब्लैक फंगस के बढ़ते खतरे को लेकर चिंता जताई है। उन्होंने एक प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस में कहा, "ब्लैक फंगस के केस देश में जगह-जगह आ रहे हैं, सरकार और विशेषज्ञों के माध्यम से संबंधित जानकारियां दी जा रही हैं। इसकी दवाई के उत्पादन को बढ़ाने के प्रयास किए जा रहे हैं।"

The 5R`s – the fey factors that are the to be remembered in respect of waste management are – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover and Residual.

1. Reduce: Wherever possible reduce waste production. One can always reduce waste production by following these simple guidelines:

· Use or buy only what is needed – when there is no waste generated, then there is no waste to be treated. Make a shopping list before going for shopping. This will ensure that you don’t buy things which are not needed. Don`t give in to temptation by buying random items.

· Unsubscribe from paper mails and instead opt for emails.

· Buy products with minimum packing. Flashy and fun packing does not necessarily mean better product quality.

· Say no to plastic bags. Carry your own reusable shopping bags.

· Spread the word on waste reduction at source – more people adopting waste reduction means less waste generated.

2. Reuse: If waste is produced, explore the feasibility of reusing the waste. Don`t throw away items that are reusable. Reduce waste by making full use of any item. Here are some useful ideas on how to reuse those everyday bits and pieces.

· Buy items that can be re-used like rechargeable batteries. This will create very less waste as they can be reused more than once.

· Reuse old clothes by stitching item like cloth bags, cushion covers, table/sofa covers etc. those that cannot be reused as such can be used as waste cloth for cleaning.

· Reuse old tires in the garden as swings or as pots for growing small plants.

· Reuse glass bottles and jars as storage containers after cleaning and drying.

· Reuse envelopes by sticking labels over the address.

· Reuse plastic bags as waste bin bags.

3. Recycle: If refusing is not feasible, explore the next option of recycling the waste. As there are economic and environmental costs associated with waste collection and recycling, it should be considered only where reduction and reuse of waste is not practicable /feasible. Most of the household and work place items can be effectively recycled with a little effort. Here are some tips on adopting recycling:

· Keep recyclable trash containers at strategic locations at home / work place. This will foster better participation in the recycling process from every one.

· Don`t throw something out just because it is old or broken. Repair and repurpose it for use again.

· Recycle food waste by composting using compost bins.

4. Recover: it may be possible to recover materials or energy from waste which cannot be reduced, reused or recycled. For instance, Sweden has been successfully generating biogas and fuel oil from waste and trash.

5. Residual: Adopt eco-friendly goods or lifestyles, such as using handkerchiefs instead of tissues, travel by public transport instead of private cars, walk or cycle for short commuting distances, adopt car-pooling for long distance commuting instead of self-driving etc.

Habit is a powerful tool in our daily life. Most of the things we do in our daily life are a matter of habit. Buying unwanted items, using tissues instead of handkerchief / cloth napkins are all habits which have been ingrained into us. The trick lies in charging these habits into environmental friendly habits a challenging task for anyone, but still necessary for a better world. In other words, the 5R`s should be practiced as a norm rather than as an exception.

CASE STUDY AN URBAN CENTER - DELHI

Capital cities were built at the site of Delhi, on the western bank of river Yamuna, for over more than a thousand years. As the river shifted course, the location of the citadel also shifted so as to be close to some dependable source of water. For example, the oldest surviving citadel which Qutubuddin Aibak conquered from the Chauhan Rajput is in present day Maharauli, far away from Shahjahanabad, the last citadel built before British rule.

In 1638, Mughal emperor Shahjahan laid the foundation of Shahjahanabad which we today called Old Delhi. The British called Old Delhi, the walled city because it had a wall around it. Most of this wall no longer exists and only a few of the gates remain.

The two most eye catching building in Shahjahanabad are the Lal Qila (Red Fort) within which the emperor`s palace is situated and the Jama Masjid, one of the Asia`s largest mosques. A wide road linked the Red Fort to Lahori gate in the western wall of the city. This road was called Chandni Chowk, after a chowk (open space) with a pool that reflected chandni (moonlight). The road had fountains and shady trees and along its length were bazaars bustling witheconomic activity. Another wide road ran from the north to the south of the city separating the Red Fort and Jama Masjid.

Shahjahanabad has numerous gardens, places of worship, educational institutions and mausoleums. Various sections of the people lived in close nearness. So, the hawellis of the nobles and wealthy people stood amidst that thatched mud house of the poor artisans and craftsmen, all were packed together in crowded Mohallas. Narrow lanes separated the houses.

It is believed that the city of Delhi has been the site of seven cities, one after the other, the present New Delhi being the eighth. In December 1911, the Coronation Durbar was held at Delhi. King George V announced the creation of a new capital, Delhi. The real motive behind the transfer of the capital was to leave Calcutta which had become the centre of the freedom struggle. However, the reason given was that Delhi, was centrally located and had a healthy climate.

Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker were the two great architects who designed New Delhi. Lutyens and Baker had different but complimentary vision. Lutyens sought to borrow from the architectural design of different countries and Baker wanted to integrate local elements in his designs. Lutyens realized that what was needed, was a synthesis of eastern and western design. Thus were built the Victory`s Place (Rashtrapati Bhvan), Council Chamber (Parliament house) North Block, South Block, India Gate, Connaught Place and many other public buildings. In constructing government buildings, red and cream sandstones were most often used. The construction of the city was finally inaugurated in the year 1931.

Baker designed the Secretariat buildings that house important government offices. Lutyens designed India Gate, the Parliament House and the Viceroy`s Palace. The India gate is a majestic arch shaped stone memorial built in the honour of Indian soldiers who were killed in the First World War. The Parliament House is a huge circular columned building. OuR NATIONAL Parliament functions from this building. The Rashtrapati Bhawan i now the official residence of the President of India. It is located on a hill called Raisina hills at the end of a long road called Rajpath in the heart of the New Delhi. Originally Called the Viceroy`s Palace, the Rashtrapati Bhavan was the residence of the British Viceroy of India till India became free in1947. This huge palace like building is a peculiar synthesis of the Islamic, Hindu and European architectural styles. Located in a huge campus of over 330 acres, the building had over 340 rooms. During the British days, over 2000 servants looked after the building.

In recent decades, the city has undergone several changes that have changed its original character. Many old British period buildings have been either demolished or renovated. New Commercial and residential buildings have been constructed to cater to the needs of ever increasing population of the city. Heritage lovers are against such modern constructions because they diminish the beauty and historical value of the city. The continuous influx of people from other parts of the country has made Delhi into the commercial capital of the present day India.

FirstInformation Report is the information that a police officer receives about the commission of a crime. An FIR must be lodged in writing and duly signed, and the copy must be handed over to the informant. It is not essential that only the victim can file an FIR. Moreover, a police officer who comes to know about the cognisable offence can file an FIR. It must contain the place, date and time of the incident. A detailed description of the incident is not necessary. The FIR has to be filed at the police station under whose jurisdiction it falls. The FIR should have the narration correctly. Incorrect documentation may weaken the case.

The courts and the police play a vital role in administration of justice. But, their role is quiet different to each other. The courts try to provide justice to the people and punish the guilty. They try to verify the facts and hear the arguments of both the parties. If one party is not satisfied with the verdict, it can appeal the next higher court.

Public prosecutors are the gazette officers appointed by the state to help in the prosecution of offenders to keep the society free from crimes. The present criminal system is based on the principle that any crime committed by an individual is a crime against the society. Therefore, the prosecution and punishment of the crime is the responsibility of the state. Such prosecution on behalf of the state is performed by a public prosecutor. During the investigation stage and till the filing of the charge sheet, the investigating agency is in control of the proceedings. Both play a complementary role in the judicial system.

Another category of cases that have caused much controversy in recent times are PIL. Due to financial crunch, poor people lack the ability to go to court to get justice. A socially concerned organization or group can approach the court on behalf of the poor, even a post card or letter written to court could serve as a writ petition. The court after investigation can pass necessary orders. This kind of litigation has helped the poor to get speedy and inexpensive justice. Although, it has led to confrontation between the executive and judiciary. This is due to increasing Judicial activism.

MUMBAI - A CASE STUDY

The moderncity of Mumbai took shape in 19^th century. The city was built by joining together of seven islands inhabited by fisherfolk. It developed a vibrant culture, traditional mixed with European. Here were pioneering efforts in music, art, drama, dance, etc. this happened because the British introduced new elements in art, architecture and music.

During the later half of 19^th century, when cotton exports from the USA were interrupted by the civil war, Bombay gained importance in the world of cotton trade. It was the first Indian city to have railways. In 1853, the first railway line was laid from Bombay to Thane. Soon many cotton mills were started in the city. The city emerged as India`s leading port. Bombay is particularly known for its British period buildings.

The Town hall was designed by Thomas Cooper built in 1833. The gigantic Bombay high court building was built to mark the visit of King George V in 1911. Gateway of India was built with yellow stone in Indo-Saracenic style of architecture which amalgamated Hindu and Islamic styles incorporated by Gothic revival.

Victoria Terminus is one of the world`s grandest railway station. It looks more like a cathedral than a railway station. It represents Gothic architecture at its best. The station was christened to commemorate Victoria Jubilee Day in 1887 when India`s first steam engine puffed out to neighbouring Thane. Today, it has been rechristened Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus after the great Maratha warrior. It is not only first railway station but also a prominent city centre around which metro life revolves.

BATTLE OF BUXAR

Battle of Buxar was fought in 1764, between Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal, the Mughal emperor and nawab of Awadh on one side and English on the other. The allies were defeated by the company`s forces at Buxar.It was one of the decisive battles of Indian history as it made company real masters of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa (Odisha). Mir Jafar was reinstated and after his death, his son rewarded the company with cash and territory.

In 1765, both Shuja-ud-daula, the Nwab of Awadh and Shah Alam II, the Mughal emperor signed the treaty of Allahabad with the English Viceroy, Lord Clive. Under this treaty, the company got the rights to collect Diwani revenue from Bengal, Bihar and Orissa (Odisha). The Nawab of Awadh paid 30 lakh rupees to the company to retain the Nawabship. Shah Alam II got the districts of Kora and Allahabad, and was also given an annual pension of 26 lakh rupees. This treaty made the company, the Diwan of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa which meant that company directly collected its revenues. The company also had the right to nominate the deputy Subehdar.

The post of deputy Subehdar was invested with the power to control the Nawab or the Police and also had the same powers. This resulted in the same person officiating as the deputy Diwan on the behalf of the company and as deputy Subehdar on behalf of the Nawab. This system of administration is known as Dual System of Administration. This dual system resulted in Nawab being saddled with responsibility without power, whereas the company had the power without responsibility. As a consequence, the people of Bengal were a neglected lot with neither the company nor the nawab working for their welfare.

WOOD`S DISPATCH

In 1854, the policy of education was given a new direction by Wood`s Dispatch, authored by Charles Wood. The dispatch set forth a comprehensive scheme of education in India. It recommended the setting up of a network of educational institutions in the country. It made a provision of education from primary to university level. English was made the medium of instruction for western knowledge and sciences. It was felt that the time had come for the establishment of universities in India. Departments of education were set up in the province in 1854. In 1857, universities were set up at Calcutta, Madras and Bombay on the lines of London University.

After 1854, the company dedicated to improve the system of vernacular education in India. It felt that this could be done by introducing order within the system establishing rules and ensuring regular discipline. I appointed a number of government Pandits, each in charge of looking after four to five schools. The task of the Pandit was to visit pathshalas and try to improve the standard of teaching. Each guru was asked to submit periodic reports and take classes according to regular time-table. Teaching was now to be based on text books and learning was to be tested through a system of annual examination. Students were asked to pay regular fee, attend regular classes, sit on fixed seats and obey the new rules of discipline.

The new system was quite different from the earlier ones. The aims of education had to match the needs of the colonial empire. In the earlier system, the salaries of the teachers were paid by the community they served. Now, they became government servants. Earlier the teachers selected the texts to teach according to the needs of the community. Under the colonial system, the teachers had no say in the curriculum. Passing the examination conducted not by the teacher but by the government became the main goal. Teachers often felt intimidated by visiting school inspectors.

From the beginning, the parents who sent their children to English schools believed that there would be a conflict between them and their children. They often blamed the educational system for their child`s behavior. Many people started believing that this education was not good for one`s character. British educated Indians grew up learning about Pythagoras, Galileo and Newton without ever learning about Aryabhatta, Bhaskar and Panini. Many felt embarrassed in acknowledging Indian contribution in the fields of arts and literature. Gandhiji wrote in the ‘Harijan’ that English education made Indian students, foreigners in their own country.

A major weakness was the neglect of mass education. Education was more expensive and only the rich and town people could afford it. Scientific and technical education also opened doors to rational and scientific ideas. It apread the ideas of democracy, nationalism, liberty and socialism. Education was not confined to any one caste or group. English became a medium for conversation between people of different regions especially during the freedom struggle, though a very small percentage understood English.

WATER RESOURCES

Two-Thirds of the Earth is covered with water. Most of the earth`s freshwater is found in rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. The saline water in the ocean has to be treated before it is fit for consumption. Water is an indispensable resource because all types of life are dependent on it. Freshwater is used in agriculture and also for industrial and domestic consumption. But, its availability depends on the amount of rainfall while others remain deficient. In areas of heavy rainfall, water seepage creates a good reserve of underground water which is another source of freshwater.

The amountof available freshwater may also vary according to the pattern of consumption in a region. However, the water cycle in which water evaporates, forms clouds and then precipitates back to the surface keeping the amount of water almost stable.

Freshwaters accounts for only 2.5% of the Earth`s water, and most of it is frozen in glaciers and ice caps. The remaining unfrozen freshwater is mainly found as groundwater, with only a small fraction present above ground or in the air.

In many countries including India, river valley projects have been developed to utilize water for various purposes. For multi-purpose projects, dams are constructed and water is collected in a reservoir. This water is put to various uses such as irrigation, hydroelectricity power generation, afforestation, navigation, etc. Most of the large rivers across the world have been utilized for this purpose.

The amount of rainfall in India is unevenly distributed which makes freshwater availability insufficient in many regions. After independence, the government undertook many multi-purpose projects to make water easily available for farming and other activities. Many such projects have made the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan fit for agriculture and also help in controlling floods and soil conservation. However, increasing urbanization water pollution and absence off water management are responsible for the choking of freshwater supplies, the world over the government at various levels needs to develop ways to conserve and manage water resources.

PERMANENT SETTLEMENT SYSTEM

Lord Cornwallis who became the Governor-General in 1786 introduced permanent settlement in Bengal and Bihar and later in Orissa. He wanted to increase the revenue of the company and thus decided to fix the land revenue to be collected. By the terms of the settlement, the rajas and taluqdars were recognized as Zamindars. They were asked to collect rent from the peasants and pay revenue to the company. The amount to be paid was fixed permanently i.e. it could not be increased ever in future. Thus, Zamindar was made a landlord of the entire land from which till now he had only collected taxes. The cultivator now became his tenant and lost his rights. It was felt that this wold ensure regular flow of revenue in company`s treasury and on the other hand, encourage the Zamindars to invest in improving the land. As revenue demands could not be increased, the Zamindars would benefit from increased production from the land.

Under this system, 90% of the revenue collected by the Zamindar went to the company, 10% was kept by the Zamindar. Lord Cornwallis made this settlement permanent by a regulation in 1793. It meant that company was assured of financial security i.e. a regular supply of income even in case of a bad harvest. It also increased British income as the rate of revenue was high. As Zamindars were made the owners of the land, this class becomes loyal to British.

But, the immediate effect of permanent settlement on Zamindars was disastrous. Many of them could not realize land revenue from the peasamts and consequently could not pay the money to government in time. Thus, they had no choice but to sell or mortgage part of their land to enable them to pay the revenue. The cultivators on the other hand were oppressed and had no rights on the land. They were left on the mercy of Zamindars. As revenue was rigidly collected the peasants were forced to borrow money from the money lenderds and landlords. When they failed to repay money, their mortgaged land was confiscated. They had to work as landless labour or as Bagaar which made their lives utterly miserable. Thus, permanent settlement led to the deterioration of agriculture and impoverishment of peasantry.
