Google Summer of Code 2008 is on! Over the past three years, the program has brought together over 1500 students and 2000 mentors from 90 countries worldwide, all for the love of code. We look forward to welcoming more new contributors and projects this year.

Waiting for the results

2 days remain to the announcement of accepted students on the Google Summer of Code home page. Waiting anxiously for the results, and hence, spending a lot of time reading the access logs on my web page, I ended up creating a mail system of announcing visits, so that the qualifying mail is sent directly from my page to my cell phone as MMS. Now I can take breath, since I am sure I will not miss a second and will response quickly, when somebody requests something :).

The Armenian Genocide

The date of the onset of the genocide is conventionally held to be April 24, 1915, the day that Ottoman authorities arrested some 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Istanbul. Thereafter, the Ottoman military uprooted Armenians from their homes and forced them to march for hundreds of miles, depriving them of food and water, to the desert of what is now Syria. Massacres were indiscriminate of age or gender, and rape and other sexual abuse were commonplace.

Victory Day

Victory Day marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the Second World War commonly referred to in the Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War. This capitulation was signed late in the evening on May 8, 1945 (May 9 in the Moscow time zone), following the original capitulation Germany signed earlier to the joint Allied forces. The Soviet government announced the victory early on May 9 after the signing ceremony in Berlin. The May 9 Victory Day is celebrated in most of the successor states to the Soviet Union. The day is traditionally marked by ceremonial military parades with the most prominent one being traditionally held in Moscow Red Square.

1988 Earthquake in Armenia or 2 days after I was born

The massive earthquake that struck Armenia on December 7, 1988 at 11:41am was epicentered in Spitak, taking at least 25,000 lives. Measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale, the many poorly constructed Soviet buildings across the region sustained heavy damage or collapsed.

The holiday marks the date in 1918 during the Russian Civil War when the first mass draft into the Red Army occurred in Petrograd and Moscow. It was originally known as Red Army Day.
