Reviewing The Sure Cure for Worry

The Sure Cure for Worry by Kent Crocket is my latest gem from Chosen Book, Blogging for books division. The randomness of this process has allowed me to be God lead.

Although, I was expecting more of a daily quiet time devotional on the topic of worry based on the title I did find it to be a valuable read through resource. The Sure Cure for Worry is divided into three parts and each chapter has Reflections questions at the end.

Great advise and thoughts from Part 1 titled Learning to Trust God:

Simply live to please The Lord

Pages 40-43 Gives 15 excellent examples of God's control over the faithful.

The story of Joseph is probably my favorite story of divine appointments in the Bible because, is show that it is also about His timing and not mine.

Seven factors necessary for a Prophecy to be fulfilled are listed on pages 52-55

Pages 60-64 gives us a list of Prophecies that have been fulfilled.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the smartest one of all.” I found this to be a pivotal question. So often we compare ourselves but are we comparing to whom is the smartest.

Part two entitled "Deciding to Follow God" is the main course of this book. It is filled with sage advice and encouraging thoughts. Kent strives to help us see how God works for our good in all circumstances, even those that are painful. We can ease our pain by choosing “to see rejection from God’s point of view and looking forward to the good future He has planned for you.”

Part 3: "Claiming God’s Promises" summaries the main message of this book.

“Stop torturing yourself (or allowing others to torture you). Surrender your life to The Lord. Place your complete trust in Him. Live one day at a time. Control what you think about. Release your problems to God through prayer. And enjoy the rest of your life to its fullest.”

If you struggle with worry, I highly recommend The Sure Cure For Worry, after reading the cure you only need to apply its principles to master your worrying.

Reviewing The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good

The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good by Peter Greer is an eye-opening read. It gets to the heart of why we do "good" and how to maintain the heart of Christ while serving Christ.

Peter tackles the idea of Karma in the first chapter. Are we doing good only so good things will happen to us? He shines new light on the Prodigal Son, balancing life, keeping our moral compass and more.

The questions at the end of these 17 chapters were certainly thought provoking. Here are a few that stuck with me:

How do you know when your moral compass is broken?
Can you identify those 3 a.m. Friends in your own life?
What are some tangible ways that we can give credit to God as we go, give, and serve?
Where are some areas that you find your identity?
Why is the philosophy of Christian karma a dangerous one to believe?
In what areas of your life do you compare yourself to others.
How do you most naturally express your faith?

Some thoughts from “The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good” that spoke to me:

The core message of grace is religious anarchy. We are forgiven, accepted, and love not because of what we do, but because of what Jesus Christ has already done on the cross.
God only uses flawed people who rely on Him. People who recognize that it's about God’s spirit. God’s grace. God’s power. God’s plan.
There are no minor moral lapses. We go from attitudes to thoughts to behaviors in an easy progression.
Integrity begins with the small decisions we make each day.
Comparison fuels pride.
Strengths divide, but faults unite.

I enjoy looking in my mailbox and finding my next Bethany House blogging for books review. This is another great book and I plan on having my boys read this book. Peter Greer gives great incite into the heart of the Christian walk. The Spiritual Danger of Doing Good is a valuable read for every Christian.

Reviewing The Ragamuffin Gospel

From the title: The Ragamuffin Gospel, you might not gleam the true nature of this jewel. Brennan has written a heart warming book that connects us to the truth of the gospel. He came to save all us sinners, who are lost without His Grace.

Brennan Manning has come full circle, To have fallen from grace by becoming an alcoholic, To stand again and learn so much from the experience is the amazing gift of God. But, he takes it a step further and shares his amazing journey with us in a way that helped me discover a new perspective of my truly amazing God.

I cannot help but love books that proclaim the truth about the Christian walk. Even with the examples of Peter and Paul, many still paint a picture of this perfectly happy butterfly and sunshine life which sets others up for failure. Living in a broken world is hard and challenging, that truth sets us free.

The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning is published by multnomah Books and I was blessed to receive a free copy to review as part of their blogger for books program.

Pearls from The Ragamuffin Gospel:

The gospel of grace announces, Forgiveness precedes repentance. The sinner is accepted before he pleads for mercy. it is already granted. He need only receive it. Total amnesty. Gratuitous pardon.

Thought my days of shopping for Televisions were over but with homeschool we picked up a new one this week.

My first visit to Whole Foods, awesome place to shot.

Purchased the baby of the canon family, excited to start learning to use it.

This is our new addition, He is only a few hours old here and fell asleep in my hand. In 10 weeks he can leave his mother and come home with me.

And Silver was happy to be back in daddy's lap.

We drove five hours into the middle of nature so that Nathanael could go horse back riding on the beach. It as a nice break from civilization.

Galloping through the water, they even saw wild horses.

How do you review a book that is still motivating change in your life?

I did receive this book for free in exchange for writing this review, but The Secrets of Intercessory Prayer by Jack Hayford is a book that I will keep and read again and again. It was the best-written book on the subject of prayer I have read in a long time.

This was the hardest book review for me. I starting reading and finished The Secrets of Intercessory Prayer book in January. The Secrets of Intercessory Prayer was life changing for me. I was so impacted by my need to change the way I prayed, who I prayed for, and what I asked on their behalf that it seemed impossible to express in a book review. My need to expand my pray life was evident.

The Secrets of Intercessory Prayer was well written, and gives you many spiritual truths to mediate on. Although this book is easy to read and hard to put down, allow your self the time for this book to change your pray life as it was meant too.

Great points from Intercessory Prayer

You have pointed out a problem with someone choice. Now your primary place is on your knees praying, knowing that God is working.

What is my attitude towards the people I am praying for? If I have an attitude of criticism or accusation how am I leaving room for God to work?

We have to do what is within our ability but leave time and space for God’s divine workings. Are we giving up too quickly?

Jack refers to a rebellious spirits as having a demonic root. One in which your battle needs to be won in prayer for our children. Ever though your children was demon possessed because of something they did that really cause you concern, then turn to God with your concern.

Matthew 19:14 “The word “suffer” means “to allow or permit.” Jesus was saying that we are to let them (family, love ones, friends) come to Him naturally, not push them into him.

We have to trust God with our children through prayer.

In chapter 11 “Praying for Someone You Don’t Want to Pray For,” I have read many books about praying and I do believe this is the first book with a chapter dedicated to this topic.

Who do you not prayer for?

The concept that not praying for someone is sin was completely new to me. We are obligated to pray for those who come and go through our lives. Even when I disapprove of their life choices, or they for some reason is no longer an active part of my life, I am still obligated to pray for them.

The review seems somehow unfinished. I have so much more I can learn from The Secrets of Intercessory Prayer and I guess our pray life is just one place where we are always growing and learning.

The Secrets of Intercessory Prayer is a great addition to any quiet time library and a book I know I will be reaching for again and again in the coming years.

For some strange reason I decided to knit a table cloth. I though the effort + time would equal keepsake.

Then came the blessing of Nathanael wanting to learn to knit. He either has too much time on his hands or is a lot faster than mom.

We decided he would knit a blanket for his bed in segments and them join them all together.

Did God Really Say, reviewing Finding God in The Dark

I am reviewing a copy of Finding God in The Dark by Ted Kluck & Ronnie Martin for Bethany House Publishers a division of Baker publishing Group as part of their blogging for books program.

Finding God in The Dark is an eight-chapter book with 4 chapters written by Ted Kluck and four written by Ronnie Martin. This book does is not a guide to finding God. It doesn't give you a process by which you can follow to find God in the dark.

I did feel the value in Finding God in The Dark is that it led me to question the depth of my relationship with God.

The book begins with a very important question for any Christian:

"Did God really say?"

The first question in the Bible really: "Did God really say?"

And quite possible a question most believers should ask themselves on a regular basis.

In chapter 2 we find a beautiful analogy from Ronnie Martin when he points out the value of receiving our needs.

"Ironically, I'll still be wearing those sweaters a year later, but those toys I couldn't live without were long gone, which is why I asked for more."

We just don't know what is best and ask for set our hearts on meaningless things.

He continues to talk about Joseph, a story we can all relate too. The truth of the Joseph situation is that many of us would not have taken it so well. I usually think of Paul's time in prison and how well he took it. How do we respond when life hand us lemons instead of the diamonds we believe we deserve.

Ronnie comments on page 44, "The problem was that there were barriers in my life that needed to be dismantled and destroyed"

What must god do to destroy those barriers in your life?

In his last chapter Kluck takes us to Gethsemane with Jesus pointing out the 5 things Jesus did.

1. Took friends

2. Was honest

3. Asked for help

4. Look to the father

5. Rest in sovereignty

On page 112 he writes, “I am reminded of something that we say a lot but I think really internalize and actually live: the idea that nothing good is possible apart from Christ.”

The great thing about Finding God in The Dark is that is begins with the question, "Did God really say?" and reminds us that God is the same today, tomorrow and yesterday. We can trust in His promises and focus on Him even in the dark.

Finding God in The Dark was a quick read but I found it to be a very profound book. I will be focusing more on what God said. Pick up a copy of this book, you will not be sorry.

Reviewing The Full Armor of God

I am reviewing a copy of The Full Armor of God by Larry Richards for Chosen a division of Baker Publishing Group as part of their blogging for books program.

The Full Armor of God is a quiet time book that discusses the book of Ephesians. The book is broken into seven parts. Each part deals with a different aspect of the armor of God and contains four chapters. Richards uses these chapters to explain the historical context of the armor, what Satan’s end game is, and finally how to use our armor effectively in this battle.

In part one, he paints a vivid picture describing the nature of the physical forces Christians in the book of Ephesians where faces. He also explains how those forces are still present in the world today and why Christians need to understand the full armor of God so that we can fight said forces.

For those of us who need a visual The Full Armor of God correlates how the armor of the Roman armies was used when Ephesians was written and how we should use that armor today.

Points from this book that made me think:

"God chose you to be you. He shapes you and he intends for you to have a fulfilling and meaningful life." Ps30

Satan's scheme is to block your development by convincing you that you are worthless.

Romans 12:2 the word-translated mind is Novus, which means perspective. We are to be transformed by changing our perspective of God.

"Instead of believing Satan's lies we are to believe truth and to live the truth. We are to put our confidence in the word of God. We are to affirm our identity as God’s dearly loved children, empowered and enabled by God himself to triumph in all of life's challenges.

We should list truths to commit to our hearts for fighting Satan’s lies. Chapter 8 was filled with great advise, I only wished he had used more scripture. Jesus gives us the example of using scripture when Satan tempted him.

After a description of Satan’s flaming arrows the reader is reminded that God is faithful and will extinguish every flaming arrow hurled by the evil one.

In chapter 12 we are told how to take up the shield of faith by focusing on God. This chapter has good direction, including scriptures.

Richards gives us 4 steps for breaking Satan’s hold and steps to take when we put on our new self.

I loved the imagery of this book. The Full Armor of God was informative and reminded me of why this armor is so necessary and important. Well worth the time I took to read it.

This was a lot easier than I expected it to be. I will not wait for it to grow so tall next time. I loved mowing with the push mower. A great workout and sustainable resource.

I got a new printer and I am loving it. I just had to share this story.

This is my old printer, it is just one year old and I am sure someone with a more technical mind will love it. I wanted to get rid of this printer the day I opened the box, but I allowed others to convince me that it would be fine.

My first issue was the buttons on the front would not allow you to control the printer. Tech support was able to help me get it set up to print.

My second issue was it would just beep randomly. I would find my self asking what is beeping only to have the children say it was the printer.

Thirdly, if you run out of paper while printing you would have to unplug the machine because it would not respond to any of the buttons on the front, including the on and off one.

But the final straw came on Friday when I was printing some labels and needed to change the ink. When I placed the new ink in I got an error message saying it did not recognize the ink. I lost it.

The moral of this story is: if you buy an item, return it at the first sign of trouble. The stress of trying to make things work is not worth your time, mental energy, or money.

God did not meant this scripture to apply to things, Thank you God.

Okay, so this is not from last week, but I am excited that April is finally here and we are just waiting to hear when he will be coming home. YEAH!

Confession time: I love just being in Tjmaxx, you find the coolest things. You might even be able to over look the price tag of one thousand dollars. (insane)

While I love that I can watch the classics on Hulu with my nine year old, his marathon to finish watching Voyager was tough.

Nathanael, our resident 9 year finished his first patch for the blanket he is knitting. #Proudmama

I was daring and make a bumper for my bed.

My Hallmark Dream book came in the mail. Let the Christmas madness begin.

Gave up on keeping her beautiful hair, and I am loving the results. I fond myself wondering why I did not do this sooner. She is just as cute with no hair.

Reviewing "The Gospel Of Yes"

I recently read The Gospel of Yes written by Mike Glenn. The Gospel of Yes is an inspirational book that discusses how God always says yes to us. He does this my retelling God's story in the first few chapters that are beautifully written. The telling of the gospel draws you into an amazing praise and worship of our amazing Father.

These amazing chapters are titled:

The Yes of Creation

God Says Yes a Lot

The Yes of the Cross

The Yes of the Resurrection

He continues with telling us why God wants to say YES to us and how he says yes. This book reminded me of how wonderful my Heavenly Father is.

Some great points from this book:

Gives us a beautiful view of our creator who in his wisdom leaves room for us to explore and create.

We should view god as a protective father disciplining his children in love, teaching them the error of their way while trying to bring them to loving repentance.

We say no to God, He never says no to us.

Loving the emphasis on change as part of the forgiveness circle. If we fail to attempt change we do cheapen the gospel of yes.

Victimhood is self-inflicted pain, which only you can solve

Every time we think we have reached the end, God presents another opportunity.

We are given a choice. We can choose to be marked permanently by our wounds, or we can choose to be defined by the resurrection of Christ.

We do not “find Jesus.” Jesus is not lost. We are. Jesus finds us, and in this finding, everything changes.

Your “yes” is unique to you and is not repeated in the life of anyone else.

If you know why you are going through something, no matter how painful the trial, you have a much better chance of getting through it.

Jesus invites us to define the meaning of our lives, which leads to the pursuit of our destiny.

No one can meet my needs but Christ!

Relationships are transformed for the better when we love without expecting anything in return.

Sometimes we think the small opportunity in front of us isn’t worth the effort, but it just may be the one thing that opens up everything else.

The Gospel of Yes, is amazingly all-inspiring book.

I am now asking:

Have I found my yes?
Is it time to move on to another yes?
What do I really need to live a good life?
How much is too much?

I cannot image anyone reading this book and not wanting to surrender all to the purpose God has given him or her. I enjoyed reading this book.

I am reviewing this book in exchange for the free copy I received. I honestly will buy "The Gospel of Yes" and give it as a gift. It would make a great addition to a quiet time basket. "The Gospel of Yes" will change anyone life who is willing to read it.

Quiet-Time Basket {Word-less Wednesday}

I recently put together a Quiet Time Basket as a gift for a friend. I had so much fun doing it and wanted to share the pictures with you.

I love the Quite Time Basket, because as an organization nut, it allows me to have everything in one convenient place for my time with God. I love the organization of it all.

The first thing you need is a basket with a handle to fit all your supplies in.

You can put anything you want in your Quiet Time Basket but the basics are:

A bible
Journal
Pens
Pencils
Highlighters
Devotional Reading
Flash Cards for those special scriptures
Post it notes for items you want to return to later

These are three of my favorite devotionals.

Extra or additional items can be items like:

a scented candle
Special mug
Tissues
Candy

Since this was a gift I included some of my favorite scriptures on card stock. My handwriting is very bad so printing is my thing.

Review of Integrative Wellness Rules

I found Integrative Wellness Rules by Dr. Jim Nicolai to be a great read. First half of the book deals with strategies for reducing stress and managing everyday life, while the second half of the book deals with eating and other health choices.

The book is broken into sections entitled

Check in and Discover

Success and Motivation

Accessing Your Spirituality

Your Emotional Health and Stress Management

Implementing Sensible Nutrition Strategies

Optimizing Vitamins, Supplements and Herbs

Managing Your Physical Body

In the first section Dr. Nicolai challenges the reader to check in by asking the right questions and discover their motivation for becoming healthy. You complete this process by creating a vision board, which shows what good health means and looks like to you. He encourages you to pick three goals using the SMART-TV goals rules and find an accountability partner. I loved most of the suggestions he makes in this chapter; my favorite was the idea of finding ways to incorporate healthy activity into what you already do.

The next section "Success and Motivation" give you strategies to help you stay motivated. The most important strategy is "Do hard things first", we all know the longer we put off the things we do not want to do the less likely that they ever get done. He also covers the tricky topic of what to do on vacations. I am sure we all know the feel of coming home from a vacation needing a real rest.

I did not get much from the "Accessing your Spirituality" section. It is a mixed bags of suggestion not entirely Bible based.

"Your Emotional Health and Stress Management" was a good chapter for me. I have been dealing with a strange amount of stress lately and I have found myself unable to figure out how to manage it. I had been recommended the deep breathing exercise Dr. Nicolai discusses in this section but I loved how he incorporates deep breathing into daily life. He tells us "focus equals feeling" and keeping our focus requires asking proactive questions rather than reactive ones. This little section is packed with ideas to help actively reduce stress.

"Implementing Sensible Nutrition Strategies," is mostly advice we have all heard before, but always bears repeating.

Another section I really related to personally was "Optimizing Vitamins, Supplements and Herbs". My doctor had recommended that I take a multivitamin and even wrote me a prescription for iron; I have a hard time with vitamins. I also feel like they are a waste of my time and had given up on trying to find one I would step up on. Dr. Nicolai said, "They should make you feel better." I have never had that experience of stepping up after taking a multivitamin but after reading this book I am willing to try again.

The last section "Managing Your Physical Body" is filled with lots of great ways to fit exercise into your life style.

As a reference book, it is great that he included cliff notes of his recommendation in the back of the book for easy indexing.

Integrative Wellness Rules changed the way I view my health and fitness. It was a great read and I know that I will be picking up this book again.

We took a surprising tumble in temperature but then bounced right back.

We start this week with "A Scripture A Day," when I think about my marriage I see the truth of this scripture. With out God I am not sure that we would be heading into our 20th year of marriage, more in love than when we started.

From our first valentine in 1991. It has held up well and is one of my treasures.

Remember when dating included love letters. They are more precious as the years go by.

Love is very important and in spite of its commercialization, should be celebrated at ever turn. Love is one of the few things that we can take with us.

Reviewing Conviction to Lead

I am writing this review of Conviction to Lead by Albert Mohler in exchange for reading the book. I try really hard to choose great books to review in exchange for reading them, after all I am investing a great deal of time.

I guess every so often one of these books will sneak through that I did not find a great deal of value in.

I chose to read Conviction to Lead to learn more about the leadership. A topic I recently decided I want to learn more about. Reading Conviction to Lead was interesting but not inspiring. It contained lots of information about what leadership is.

I guess subtitles are important at to telling you what a book is about. True to the subtitle the book does tell you 25 Principles for Leadership that matter. I agree with Mohler that these principles are essential in a leader.

A few examples are:

Conviction to lead starts with purpose
Leadership is a narrative
Leaders are teachers, communicators, and readers
Leaders have character, are great stewards

These are all great qualities for leaders to have but like Moses I found my self-wondering how do I get there. How do I become a great narrator, a better teacher and a great communicator?

If you want to know what qualities a leader should have, this book will be a great read. But, you will have to look somewhere else to learn how to improve, strengthen or even build these qualities.

A Scheduling Life Word-less Wednesday

When scheduling the busy life of a family of 5 the basic ingredient is the wall calendar. The main thing schedule on my calendar this season is how long hubby will be away.

I use the Awesome note to schedule non-daily task and projects.

When scheduling my day, I just fell in love with the Errands app. It is simple and very efficient and simply works wells for me.

Tomorrow I will be over at Homemaker's Challenge sharing with many words how and why I changed my scheduling format. Why 2012 was not my best year and how I plan on making 2013 great?

I finished my 2000 piece puzzle.

I learned last year the deep and abiding truth of this scripture. I had my plans but God certainly establishes my steps when I choose to lean on Him. I had plans last year but no schedule for accomplishing them. I am thankful that God choose to step in and give me a deeper vision for the needs of my family.
