Most of us have heard of the vibrant New York based Novogratz family. We either watched their shows: 9 by design on Bravo or more current - Home by Novogratz on HGTV.This Husband and Wife duo create moder home designs by mixing high and lows while adding playful and artistic elements.
If you have watched the shows then you have seen their most recent home (I say most recent because they move so often) and that home is totall modern fabulousness. Well, I came across another home that they own in Trancoso Brazil which happens to be an amazing antidote to their home and life in NYC. Such an amazing laid back paradise for the family to unwind. Take a peek, I'd love to be transported right Now so that I can swim and lounge by that amazing pool, then take a nap in the hammock, drink a tropical drink in that fun bar, later take a shower in the festive pink bathroom followed by a good nights sleep (so that I can do it all again the next day) in of the serene bedrooms. Ahhhh how relaxing. Let me know what you think :)?

Is Domino magazine coming back?

It's snowing like crazy here in Chicago. We did get a little spoiled with the warmer weather in October, November and December, so I guess we are due for some Chicago wintry weather. On the other hand I hope we don't get covered up completely, since I have a very busy day tomorrow.
I wanted to share with you some interesting gossip I have been hearing regarding Domino magazine. I am an Interior Design Textile Junkie! YES that's what I said :) I have a thing for design fabrics. Ever since I can remember I loved textiles, I loved playing with different patterns, textures while creating layered vignettes fabric vignettes- it was quite fun, it still is, but now I do it with lots more knowledge and purpose :) .
My mom also been very passionate about textiles, I remember when I was little, she used to purchase so many different fabrics (for the home or apparel) to either update the draperies in the house or have the tailor make new dresses for my sister and I. We used to admire the patterns and colors and often picked them ourselves. I still remember one of the last summer dress that she had the dressmaker make for me, it was white silk fabric with beautiful vibrant colorful butterflies all over and yes I picked the fabric and designed it myself, it was fun :).
There is something amazing about luxurious great quality fabric that adds a great level of sophistication, interest or just a fantastic character to a room.
To this day I LOVE the part of an interior design project when I get to select textiles and create a perfectly balanced interior environment for my clients.
By layering, blending textures, selecting the right type of fabric for the space as well as the scale of the print and pattern, you can completely transform a room to an amazing landscape.
I love all types of textiles since they are all relative to what you are trying to achieve in the design. But my favorite are beautifully crafted luxury textiles with lots of confidence in pattern and color. I love love vivid colors, luscious heavy velvets, heavy linens, beautifully crafted damasks, fun masculine geometric patterns as well as modern bright florals. When it comes to textiles and anything else in the design goods industry (furniture, textile, lighting etc.) great quality and great designs usually are more expensive, but they oh so worth it on so many levels.

White Interiors

After the wonderful January heatwave we got hit with a ton of snow. It's kind of crazy to go into such a drastic direction, yet I am definitely used to this given that I live in Chicago. ;-) It could be pretty nice if you make the best of it. My dogs also like the snow, and keep nudging me to throw them snowballs so they could chase them.
Another wonderful thing about having everything covered in snow outside is the amazing light. I am not sure if you know but light is what you see after it has been reflected from a surface (these are some of the things you learn in detail in Lighting and Color theory courses while in design school, the science behind it etc. Good stuff :) ) That is why same light can look so different in completely different interior, surrounding etc. Anyway, so given that there is plenty of beautiful White snow outside, everything is so much more brighter. Even nights are not as dark, it's quite fantastic.
The reason why I am so excited about it is that I love me some bright sunshine peeking in through the windows or when I drive and now it's even brighterrrr :). In addition even though I love me some colorful and moody interiors I am also a huge white on white fantatic. I love the modernity, the crispness and the fresh feeling of a pure white interior. It could look so modern but it could also be so soothing and elegant.

Bissfull as Spring

Currently the weather here in Chicago more resembles Spring than "Chicago in January" weather. The temperatures make the birds chirp and even some flowers started to bloom. I know it's not going to last long yet it's oh so magical. Tomorrow should be the end of this few warm-day-wonder, but I just love it so much. You know when Spring is here and everyone starts to wear lighter clothes (especially here in Chicago) everyone is out, the sun is shining. It's just that perfect happy feeling. This great feeling of joy, garden leisure, and outdoor festivities. Just love that feeling and we are having a glimpse of that now.

All of you that live in climates where it doesn't get to the single digit freezing temps, you should feel so lucky! I envy you ;-) I vow that one day during the really cold seasons I will seasonally temporarily move to the warmer climate and work from there. :) Enjoy your week! xo

New Year New beginning

Can you believe Christmas and New Years are already behind us. It feels strange writing 2012, then again it does so every year :) . My holidays have been busy but in a good way. Between hanging out with the family, going to museum, eating, and flipping through my design books & magazines, there has been plenty reflection, and planning the amazing year that is ahead of us.
I had some thoughts on updating our website, and perhaps merging the blog into it, (I would love your thoughts on that, perhaps any of you have done that). Also there is a lot of work to be done behind the scenes, our office design, projects and soo much more. Besides the design business other very important part of my life- health, fitness, inspiration, quality time with my puppies are big Non Negotiable Parts of my daily New Year plan routine. Oh yeah and then there is also the wedding that will be here before I know it :)
Life never slows down so making sure that you have a plan of action and boundaries is very important to keep me in check. I would love to know your New Year plans, do share them in comments below. I wish you all an incredible, healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!! xoxo

The day after Christmas my Sister and I went out to lunch and then stopped over at our fabulous The Art Institute of Chicago Museum - The Modern wing, to get inspired look at beautiful pieces of art and relax.

You all know by now how much I love to cook healthy vegetarian meals, It feels so good to make something super delicious that is also so nourishing. Here is one of my breakfast creation. I am often the Chef Extraordinaire - creating amazing dishes out of whatever we happen to have in our fridge. Here is organic brown rice with mushrooms, avocado and tomatoe & and fresh parsley - yum.

I can't believe how fast year 2011 has gone by. I guess when you are super busy, you can't help but just strap yourself to the seat and enjoy the ride. This year has been absolutely fantastic for so many reasons, I grew stronger, took many risks, worked on great projects, met amazing people and learned so so much. I know the next year will bring many more amazing moments, friendships, accomplishments and memories but in order to really appreciate it I have to step back and point out a few events that have been part of my 2011 interior design business journey. I wish you all an amazing 2012 and would love to hear about your journey and plans! Xo

My business traveling for the year started with Design Bloggers Conference, what a wonderful event it was. I connected with so many friends and met amazing people.

This year was filled with lots of amazing conversations and learning experiences going through it along amazing masterminds such as Tobi Fairley & Jennifer Brouwer next to me has been a great growing experience.

The New York Business conference was also fantastic not only for the learning part but for the wonderful ladies that I shared it with :)

And some more amazing dinners with amazing design business ladies!

I participated in a great local Design Harvest event on the Chicago Home and Garden panel

I was featured twice in the Chicago Home & Garden magazine

I was also one of the designers giving locals design advice (I'm in the blue dress) at a fun event hosted by ASID & Chicago Home & Garden mag

My High & Low holiday table decorating was featured in two local publications, Chicago Home & Garden & Daily Herald

And not to forget that I met the wonderful Mr Steve Nobel not Once but twice this year, he sure is fantastic and incredibly smart man.

Deep Hues in design

I love rich deep hues. The use of strong vivid color, whether it is in interior design or in fashion, exudes confidence and passion and can inject so much personality and warmth. Whether you use one bold color against black and white or amongst other colors, the effect could be so incredible, sophisticated as well as fantastical = two perfect attributes that I think every interior should include. I love fashion, I draw much of my interior design inspiration from the fashion world. Just as in interior design, in fashion you can really express yourself in so many ways. I absolutely love this video of Lynn Dell by Advanced Style. It outlines few very important parts of my own design philosophy. In the video Lynn notes key points of what I strongly believe in and express with my clients: you don't have to follow trends express yourself, accentuate positive and eliminate the negative, strong color.
Lynn is an owner of Off Broadway Boutique in NYC. I'd love to meet this fantastic woman in person and perhaps design her home, I have a feeling it would be a ton of fun :) . Make sure to watch.

As always, it's been busy around here. While planning my wedding, searching for the perfect dress, decorating for Christmas and having a small photo shoot tomorrow for a local paper, there is still plenty to do, not to mention design projects and life.
I love this time of the year, I love planning special events, I love decorating and of course I love designing my client's homes so there is lots of excitement going on, but of course there are only so many hours in the day, so I have to try to make every minute count. On that note- I better run and I leave you with this photo of "me" in the perfect wedding dress decorating the Christmas tree. Or at least how I envision it ;-)

Lovely Interior Design at London's Number Sixteen hotel

I can't believe that December is only a day away. Speaking of December and the holidays, it always reminds me of good times and memories I had as a little kid growing up in Europe, Poland and our lovely traditions. Because of that, the holiday season gives me this fantastic feeling and I immerse myself in great childhood memories of me and my family that make me smile.
During this time I also can't help but think about my family all over the Europe (Poland, France, Germany, UK, Spain, Ireland) and how they will all spend their holidays.
To help you all to get into the fun European spirit I included couple photos of the fantastic Number Sixteen Hotel- which I know my mom would love. Such a happy, cheerful and London based hotel that kicks my nostalgia up a notch and lets me reminisce further. :)

Sharing my Graditude for this ONE day

As we are getting ready for this beautiful Thanksgiving Holiday, which I started celebrating after moving to the United States :), I wanted to share with you my gratitude and how thankful I am for this very moment and this ONE very day that is given to me.
I am a big believer in living mindfully, experiencing every moment and appreciating it's every detail. I try to look at every day, every situation and every acquaintance in that manner. Needless to say, it's challenging at times in this fast paced world, we can quickly forget how amazing a day really is or how grateful we are.
On this Thanksgiving holiday I wanted to share with you my gratitude for this day and all that it brings with it.

Dinner parties and cocktails in a well designed room

I had some great conversations with my mom today. It started out with plans for Thanksgiving, where we talked about dishes that we want to prepare and what we wanted to do different. We also continued to discuss who will be present, based on which we would know how much food to prepare, how many table settings to set and overall for us to know, what type of dinner party is it going to be so that we can prepare appropriately.

This got me thinking, how we as a family entertain, relax after eating a beautifully prepared meal and how a well designed room with proper furniture layout and arrangement can enhance a family gathering or any house dinner party or cocktail party for that matter.
In my mom's house, our dinners and gatherings involve a combination of formal dining, following with comfortable leisure relaxation. That includes lots of conversations, laughs while having cocktails and nibbling on baked goods.
When entertaining and having a gathering of this type, it's important for a good furniture layout, along with variety of seating and ample table surfaces, therefore if someone wanted to they could easily put down their drink or a small dessert plate. For this reason, I love rooms with variety of seating and lots of it. A room that employs beautiful furniture pieces, might not be a loved and well utilized room if it doesn't serve the family or people that use it. At the same time a well designed room can add much pizazz and impact to the party, because people will enjoy themselves while having a place to sit, set their bites, while having conversations in comfort.

Here are a few rooms that are fabulously designed for a gathering and suit all types of needs for various people while chatting and relaxing . They feel so welcoming and heavenly, I want to walk into each one of these rooms and stay a while, explore, sip my drink and relax -which is exactly the feeling I love at a great dinner or cocktail party.

I'm Loving Lacquered Walls in Interior Design

Lately I have been crushing on beautiful Lacquered Walls in Interior Design settings. I am in LOVE with the liquid level of shine which gives a room that ultimate luxe effect that I just can't resist. Not only does the shiny effect add dimension & whimsy, but it also allows the light to glimmer and bounce around the room. My favorite lacquered wall effect is showcased on rich deep hue colored wall, where you could see it's amazing effect and admire it's beauty- so perfectly yummy.
Lacquered walls add that amazing fashionable touch to a room and elevate it to another redunculous level. The time it takes to make sure the walls are perfectly smooth is ALL worth the amazing result at the end.
My current dressing room, is lined with tall white laquered cabinets and I am loving every inch of it. Perhaps the next room I design and renovate will have more of a jewel toned lacquered effect to bring on the happy, whimsy and totally over the top amazing statement.

Animal Love and Design - Be Kind to Animals or Doris Day will kill you

Whenever I come across Doris Day I smile for many reasons. First thing that comes to mind is the movie-Pillow Talk- which always puts me in a good mood. If you haven't seen it- you must! It's a classic :) She plays a decorator that shares a phone line with a handsome gentleman (that's all I'm going to say).

Another reason is that she is a huge animal lover. Yes, Doris is not only an Actress, Singer but also an Animal Activist, since she retired from show business. She had started an animal shelter as well as an animal foundation dedicated to educating and empowering people to act on behalf of animals- amazing!. She is a dedicated campaigner for animal welfare and protection.

It looks like Doris and I have a lot in common after all, well at least two things: decorating, and love for animals :))

I love looking back at old movie sets and seeing how they feel in the current design world. This study actually feels pretty nice, modern, clean with touches of classic elements and whimsy.

Interior Design Textiles - Colorful Florals

Many of you might already know that although I like a clean line modern tailored aesthetic, I am also a huge fan of saturated colors. It's also no surprise that I love me some deep jewel toned pinks. This is especially true when it comes to interior design textiles where a bit of bold pattern could totally change the mood of a room.
I absolutely love bold floral patterns, deep even fluorescent shades make the patterns so much more happy and fresh.
My floral obsession -which is currently very evident :) , goes back to my roots. My mother absolutely loves flowers and our home has always been surrounded with beautiful blooming plants, cut flowers as well as our outdoors summer blooms. While Growing up in Poland, my mom who was a professor (mathematician) would constantly get flowers from her students, parents, colleagues. At the end of the year or term our home would be FILLED with vases and vases of amazingly smelling flower bouquets. These memories are so vivid and I love every bit of the flower overload. Till this day my mom's house is filled with flowers that she plants herself, or bouquets she gets from us :) . Besides real blooms she loves her flower embroidery, prints and hand painted floral motifs. She covets her floral china, embroidered napkins, magnificent collection of floral block printed table cloths and other cherished compilations.

A beautiful large flower pattern could be so beautiful and perfect in so many interiors. Whether you use it as an accent in vibrant pillows or as drapes, duvet covers, upholstery or even wallcovering - it can add so much character, happiness and transform your space completely.
Here are are a few floral textiles that I am currently LOVING and I would use each one of these in an appropriate design.

Interior Design Process- Getting everyone involved

One of the most important parts of an interior design process is getting everyone that will use the space involved at the begininning. The parents, the children, as well as animals that occupy and use the space daily have many different wants, needs and desires. Outlining and discussing these parts will ensure that the final outcome blends function with beauty.
Many clients feel that might not be necessary, since they think they know their family and I tell you - It Is necessary!. In order to make sure that the design plan properly aligns with your family's needs and wants, is determined by this step.
Every family and person is different. Some people are really messy eaters, some have certain routines or morning rituals, some dogs shed a lot and like to bring their buscuits on the living room carpet to eat. As you can see -even just these few points will set the tone for how the space should be designed.
Another reason to do this, is to save yourself time, money while minimizing the design changes and reselections needed.

A whole design is based on numerous elements, pieces that work together in tandem. That relates to architectural elements, patterns, electrical and lighting locations, colors, functioning pieces, scale, balance factor, and the feeling of the whole room. It's not just a reselection of an "item" most of the time. That single item effects everything else in the design. The drawings need to be adjusted, the specifications updated, the design is taken back to the drawingboard so that it creates a proper unified feel and look that was intended. If there are items or elements that need to be resourced and redesigned- chances are, that other pieces might not work well because of it, so the design has to be tweaked from other angles as well.
It's normal to have the design slightly adjusted, yet once you start adjusting the design because there wasn't enough information provided at the begininng, well that ends up being less favorable to the length of the design project and perhaps the clients bottom line.
The whole point is, for these discussions is to take place ahead of time before weeks of designing, sourcing, drawing and executing the design for your beautiful new space.

The Amazing 8- Vibrant sitting room

For this new feature "The Amazing 8" I will be putting together inspirational room vignettes while utilizing Eight (8) luxury pieces of furniture, lighting, Art, Rugs etc. to create the perfect look and feeling. Clearly every well designed room has so many factors that make is special and perfectly balances, yet in The Amazing 8 I will only select Key 8 that make the room special and notate why it works. Enjoy.

Today's "Amazing 8" showcases a sitting room that is saturated with vibrant colors that I love so much, yet balanced with soft whites and gold elements.

Why is this room so perfectly in sync yet so full of interest and luxe factor- you might ask :) :

Besides the right proportion and scale of each piece there is also a strong sense of contrast when it comes to materials, textures, patterns as well as color and forms. Contrast is something that I love to involve in my designs and it's one of my principals that adds to my signature design. The clean lines in the sofa, end tables and the coffee table anchor the room while the black keeps it from feeling overly sweet. The incredible Italian chandelier adds drama and softness with layers of glass petals. the beautiful scroll wall sconces add a perfect feminine touch while infusing interest. Two purple arm chairs add interest with it's lines as well as mood in addition to it's wood back elements and caster legs. The coffee table adds a center point to the room while adding extra sparkle with it's mirror top.

The incredible Oil/Acrylic on canvas painting sets a backdrop for the whole room while adding depth and help to transport us to a serene place. Oh and the absolutely amazing intricate rug adds my cherished whimsy factor, marries the room together through it's painterly movement of color and irregular pattern adds a big contrast to otherwise color blocked room. In addition saturated colors in the rug add fun and softness & complete the room.
mm mmm -Perfectly lovely, I could entertain and serve tea in this tailored and full of whimsy room in a heart beat. :)

I am a huge fan of colorful abstract art. I create them myself and think every home should have at least one bold colorful original abstract painting.
It doesn't matter if your home is filled with antiques and traditional pieces Or it's ultra modern a bold colorful piece will instantly bring life to any space and it will add that fun whimsy every space needs.
I love scouring antique shops for fun small colorful quirky pieces yet I also love LARGE commissioned pieces that will be showstoppers in a beautifully designed room.

One of our rooms at home has a jute rug, which is a fantastic option for many spaces for many reasons. It happened to be the room during the party that lots of dancing took place so you can imagine if people are dancing with drinks in hand it could get dirty. Well, during the party a small piece of cake fell, broke apart and got smooshed by someone accidentally stepping on it.
