Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition which is characterized by widespread muscle and joint pain that is typically accompanied by fatigue and a variety of other symptoms. It is not a sign of a serious underlying condition and does not increase the risk of other illnesses, however, it can seriously affect the quality of life as the pain often interferes with the patient's abilities to perform everyday activities. Widespread and persisting pain can also cause sleep disturbances, while the frustration of managing the pain can affect the sufferer's mood, emotional state and relationship with other people which in turn can lead to depression. This painful disorder can be helped and it can be successfully controlled with a combination of medications, self-care measures and treatment at the Willows Clinic Dublin useing The Perrin Technique.

Fibromyalgia symptoms often start after a physical trauma, severe emotional distress or infection but the widespread muscoloskeletal pain can also begin without an obvious trigger. What causes this painful disorder remains unknown but it is more likely to be developed by women and people who have a close biological relative suffering from the condition.
The most characteristic symptoms of fibromyalgia are:
- muscular, joint and nerve pain on both sides of the body both bellow and above the waist which persists more than three months

- and worsening of the pain when an additional pressure is applied to tender points. These are located on the inner knees, top of shoulders, between shoulder blades, back of the head, upper hips, sides of hips, front sides of the neck and some other specific parts of the body (18 in total) These are all tested along with a full consultation and examination on your first visit to the willows clinic Dublin.

Just about all fibromyalgia sufferers also experience fatigue which can be ME or CFS running along side the fibromyalgia, while difficulty finding a comfortable position to sleep can lead to insomnia. Other fibromyalgia symptoms may include:
- back pain
- chronic headaches
- difficulty concentrating
- abdominal pain
- anxiety
- sleep apnea
- irritable bowel syndrome
- depression

Since there are no specific laboratory tests to diagnose the condition and since its symptoms are very similar to those caused by other conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), osteoarthritis, polymyalgia and hypothyroidism, the doctors usually diagnose fibromyalgia by exclusion. Only now Andy Smith at the Willows Clinic use the Perrin Technique to test and diagnose on the day for Fibromyalgia and ME and CFS. This system has worked for many clients of the clinic and starts full clinical trials with the NHS in England from the 1st May 2013.
Unfortunately, some of the mentioned conditions that cause symptoms similar to those in fibromyalgia cannot be diagnosed with laboratory test either which often makes the diagnosis of fibromyalgia very challenging. In addition, it is possible to have two conditions at the same time. Many people have both fibromyalgia and CFS or ME which is why some health experts including DR Perrin believe that they are related. Fortunately, treatments for both disorders are very similar and usually do not interact with treatments for other conditions either. The Perrin Tehnique being very successful at treating all these disorders.

The pain is managed with pain relievers such as acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or prescription strength analgesics, depending on severity of the pain. Patients may also be prescribed antidepressants to promote sleep and relieve fatigue.
Self-care is an important part of fibromyalgia management and we teach this as part of our treatment model. Stress which tends to worsen its symptoms unfortunately cannot be avoided but there are many ways to relieve its harmful effects. Examples include meditation, yoga and breathing exercises. But generally, everything that helps you relax can be defined as an effective stress management technique. Light exercise helps relieve the pain as well although it may initially worsen it. Just as important is to get plenty of sleep and eat a healthy diet that is high in vitamins, minerals, fibers and other essential nutrients.

On the 25th of November 2012 I was pleased to attend as a guest speaker representing the Willows Clinic Dublin, Dr Raymond Perrin's practitioner conference in Manchester England.

There were several speakers besides DR Perrin and myself. They included Dr Shara Myhill, the Chair person of the ME charity Forme and a Local Pharmacist Dennis Gore.

Dr Myhill explained her treatment of ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia sufferers using the Stone age Diet information on which can be found by clicking Here back to her Wiki site. She also discussed her latest research and tests that she carries out. The details of these tests can be accessed here.

The best news from the conference was that it was hoped that the Perrin Technique would be beginning trials with the NHS in England as soon as March 2013.

All in all it was a very good conference and I was very proud that my patient Sharon Monagh received the first ever International Perrin patient of the year Award. For her good recovery and press coverage in the Irish Evening Herald and The Tubberty Show on RTE 2 radio.

A seminar on ME / CFS and Fibromyalgia and its diagnosis and treatment using The Perrin Technique™ by founder Dr Raymond Perrin will be held in Tullamore on 19th August, followed by a number of treatment sessions.

I am sorry it has taken so long for me to come back on this subject but it has been a very busy time here in Ireland.

The Conference in Tullamore was well attended and the speakers gave much valuable information. Especially DR Raymond Perrin who gave an excellent presentation on his technique for treating ME / Fibromyalgia. Dr Perrin has more than 25years experience in the diagnosis and treatment of ME/CFS. Two very informative presentations were given by Dr Daniel Goyal who specialise in diet and Dr Peter Julu who is Specialist Autonomic Neurophysiologist, both from the Breakspear Clinic in the UK. This clinic has been researching auto immune illnesses for more than 20 years and is world renowned.

From the Willows Clinic, Perrin Technique therapist Andrew Smith was also on hand to answer questions from attends between the day’s presentations. Andrew has worked with the Perrin Technique both in the UK and Ireland and is a Gold Certificate holder for excellence in providing the Perrin Technique. He is based in the Willows Clinic Dublin and The Central Hotel Tullamore for the treatment of ME / CFS/ Fibromyalgia.

Rory Hafford investigates a new technique that is having a positive effect on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

A new osteopathic technique is being used to treat people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Called the Perrin Technique, it is the brainchild of Dr Raymond Perrin, a Manchester-based osteopath who stumbled upon the manipulation while treating one of his patients.

Basically speaking, the technique involves spinal mobilisation, lympathic drainage and craniosacral therapy. Clinical trials have been undertaken in the Universities of Manchester and Salford to verify the efficacy of the technique – and results have been positive.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome affects thousands of Irish people, who are forced to battle daily with exhaustion, muscle pain, headaches, flu-like symptoms and depression. Throw in poor memory, poor concentration and poor balance and you have an altogether nasty, debilitating, chronic ailment that modern medicine has had very little success with.

Dr Perrin believes that CFS is a physical disorder that leads to a build-up of toxins within the brain and the spine. This runs contrary to the traditional thinking that it was the result of a virus and which led to the condition being known as Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome at one point.

The Perrin technique diagnoses the disorder by identifying definite physical signs and treats it by improving drainage of the toxins from the central nervous system.

“The Perrin technique is an osteopathic approach that manually stimulates the fluid motion around the brain and spinal cord,” says Dr Perrin. “Manipulation of the spine further aids drainage of these toxins out of the cerebrospinal fluid. Massage of the soft tissues in the head, neck, back and chest direct all the toxins out of the lympathic system and into the blood, where they are eventually detoxified in the liver.

“These symptoms should gradually improve and, in time, some patients will become totally symptom-free.

This system is now available in Ireland, courtesy of the Willows Clinic in Glasnevin in Dublin. Speaking to healthnewsireland.com, the chief therapist at the Clinic, Andrew Smith said the treatment is proving very popular with Irish sufferes and the results are extremely positive.

“We are seeing quite a lot of Irish people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. In fact, we have 28 people on our books seeking the Perrin Technique approach. One woman was literally carried up to the clinic by her boyfriend a few weeks ago. Yesterday, she walked in by herself and sat upright in the chair – a feat she could not have achieved before she started the therapy,” says Mr Smith.

Energy and Appetite better thanks to Perrin says Galway ME patient

More energy and a better appetite are the first benefits of the Perrin Technique experienced by ME patient Rebecca from Galway. She began treatment at the Willows Clinic in July after ten years of horrendous health problems. Previously her life was full and busy: she worked long hours as a chef and any spare time was crammed with activities. But during 1999 her health began to deteriorate and this worsened when she finished work in December of that year: normally another job would be easy to come by, but she was just too ill to work.
“At first I thought it was just a bad stomach bug,” she says. “But the diarrhea got worse, not better, and the weight started to fall off me; I ended up bed-bound for two years. I could feel my body deteriorating, it was shocking. Even getting out of bed to have a shower would leave me exhausted, and I would have chronic pain in my muscles, my joints and my head.”
But Rebecca did not give up, even after nothing showed up on Gastroenterology Tests. She had been studying anatomy and physiology and started to adjust her diet. Very soon she found that her energy levels were improved a little by cutting out certain foods. But she still felt that she did not have a definitive answer, until a Dublin GP suggested that she might have ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis) and fibromyalgia. Then it all began to make sense. Dublin ME Trust seminar 8th May 2010 on the Perrin Technique.

I had the great pleasure of addressing the ME Trust in Dublin yesterday Saturday 8th May 2010, on the subject of the Perrin technique and its approach to the treatment of ME/CFS.

I was greeted at the venue by Declan Carroll of the ME Trust who had organised everything for me for the meeting at Carmichael House. The staff of Carmichael House was lovely and had prepared everything for me well in advance of my arrival.

I was able to share my experiences of ME/CFS which my son Daniel had suffered from very severely between the ages of 19 and 31. When he first consulted DR Raymond Perrin and was helped to almost total recovery in the last year since his first consultation with Dr Perrin. This is still a work in progress.
I explained the methods of treatment employed by the Perrin technique and my experiences as a licensed practitioner of the technique both here in Dublin and in Nottingham in the UK. I work in Dublin on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday and Nottingham on Thursday and Friday every week.

Lots of people attended and participated well asking lots of questions about the Perrin technique, its hypothesis, results and methods of treatment. We had a good two and three quarter hours together at the end of which three quarters of the people attending this Perrin technique seminar with me, made appointments for an initial consultation and treatment. Which the ME trust very kindly agreed to sponsor.

I look forward to working with every one that I possibly can that has ME/CFS both in Dublin and Nottingham and helping them to reach their desired outcomes.

Raymond Perrin’s research at the University of Salford in conjunction with the University of Manchester, coupled with the hundreds of successful clinical case studies and the latest findings in neurophysiology, has provided strong evidence that CFS/ME involves a disturbance in the drainage of toxins from the brain and muscles. These poisons often enter the body in the form of viruses, bacteria and other microbes, parasitic infection or due to environmental toxins such as pesticides.

However many toxins are simply an overproduction of chemicals naturally produced within the body to help the immune system with fighting infections, inflammation and stress. Constant physical and emotional stress can lead to this type of over production. The excess of some toxins in the brain and spinal cord should drain into the lymph vessels and be broken down by the body’s lymphatic system and liver. CFS/ME patients have a reversed drainage that leads to toxins building up in the central nervous system. Causing the dysfunction of different parts of the brain and spinal cord. This explains the many different symptoms complained of by CFS/ME patients.

Has the Perrin Technique been tested?

Yes its effectiveness was tested using tow separate clinical trials. The first examined the change in the symptoms following a year of treatment. The second repeated the study and used MRI scanning in order to examine further the possible mechanisms of the improvement.

The Perrin Technique is a manual system of diagnosis and treatment that has helped hundreds of patients with CFS/ME and has totally cured many since 1989. the Perrin Technique was devloped as a result of a chance discovery during the clinical Prctice of a Manchester osteopath, Dr raymond Perrin.

Hello I am Andy Smith I have been a therapist for over 20 years and I first became interested in ME 10 years ago. At this time my middle son Daniel 19 had been sick for about 1 year. He had contracted Glandular feaver about a year before and then got it again 6 months after the first bout.
From there it just seemed to go down hill. daniel would seem to get well for a short time and then go down again. He was tested for everything but the doctors could find nothing wrong. So it was decided that he had ME and that as was thought at the time, it must all be in his mind. So with that it was time to roll out the antidepressants.

I had helped him with different treatments over time and he had responded well to a session of Crainiosacral therapy. This went on until Dan was 31 when he came accross a story about a girl from Nottingham who had been cured by the Perrin Technique. Dan found Dr Perrin and away he went. he has gone from beeing a 3 on the Perrin Scale to a 7 in 8 months.

I was so imperssed that I trained with Dr Perrin and what he dose that I trained with him on his post graduate course and am now practiceing in Nottingham on Thursdays and Fridays at the Caritas Natural Health Clinic and on Mondays, Tuesdays, wednesdays and Saturdays at the Willows clinic in Glasnevin Dublin 11. telphone 01 8569632.
