It is one of 250 chapters of ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation, an organization dedicated to preventing the tragedy of brain and spinal cord injuries.

Each year, 430,000 brain and spinal cord injuries occur in the United States; one-third happen to young people between the ages of 15 and 24. The tragedy is that most are preventable.

ThinkFirst Navajo's program reaches youth in these high-risk age groups at schools, community presentations, and sports programs with the help of VIPs (Voices for Injury Prevention), a dedicated group of injury survivors who share the message that prevention is the only solution.

In 2010, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation awarded Eve's Fund a "Quality of Life Grant" for our efforts in injury prevention education.

The library had been destroyed in a fire last year.
Osborne and Boyce spoke with nearly 400 students in grades 4-6 via teleconference. The women encouraged the children to keep reading, talked about what inspired them to become writers, and answered students’ questions about how they come up with ideas for the Magic Tree House books. During the event, the school principal, Ms. Pandora Mike, announced that the Magic Tree House team had donated a “Teaching Bookshelf” to Mesa Elementary, adding more than 500 copies of the popular books to the school’s collection.
Later that day, Eve’s Fund sponsored a Family Literacy Night. Again, the two authors talked to parents about the importance of reading to their children.
Another Eve's Fund partner, Books-A-Go Go, was also a co-sponsor.
Location: Shiprock NM
Date: May 13, 2011
Number of Photos in Album: 43

View Album

<media:group>

On Wednesday, April 20, 2011. bestselling children’s authors Mary Pope Osborne and Natalie Pope Boyce helped celebrate the re-opening of the Mesa Elementary School library in Shiprock, New Mexico. Troop 928—also known as the “Penguins”—took second place overall in camporee competitions. They also won top honors in the cooking competition. The six boys who attended from Troop 928 were very proud of their accomplishments during the camporee!

Eve’s Fund’s scout troop has been very active since its first meeting in 2010.

Last year, the boys participated in the 13th annual Walking Together for Healthier Nations walk and the troop plans to participate again this May.

They have also “carried the colors” during the homecoming parade in Red Mesa and have gone on several hikes in the area.
