PAN Manager Poised for Breakout in 2012

BOXBOROUGH, MA – January 12, 2012 – Egenera, a pioneer in converged fabrics and infrastructure automation software, today announced that the company exited 2011 with its eighth straight quarter of profitability and more than 400 percent revenue growth for its PAN Manager software compared to the previous year. Since beginning the transition to a software company, Egenera has significantly expanded its customer base, which totals more than 500 customers and thousands of discrete deployments worldwide. The company has also made strong inroads into cloud computing with fully one-third of revenues tied to SaaS providers using PAN Manager for bringing business continuity services to the cloud offerings. By the end of 2011, Egenera had delivered on its promise to sign on nearly every major blade server vendors including HP, Dell, Fujitsu and NEC. At the same time, the company grew its reseller partner community by 10-fold.

Established initially as a hardware vendor in 2000, Egenera made the transition to a software vendor to bring customers open converged infrastructure by delivering its PAN Manager software on open blade server hardware platforms. With its most recent release of PAN Manager 7.1 in November, Egenera doubled the number of blades that can be managed by the software, increasing scalability and the rapid restoration of services. For customers, PAN Manager management software provides hardware independence, easy scalability, offers 24/7 availability, reliable security and disaster recovery capabilities for multi-tenant environments.

Availability of PAN Manager on industry standard hardware comes at a time when customers of converged infrastructure or, as termed by Gartner, Fabric Based Infrastructures (FBI), increasingly require a single administrative console that can be used to manage all the hardware as a compatible set of resources. As pointed out by Gartner in a recent American Banker article, when it comes to compute fabrics, what customers need is an open fabric management solution and PAN Manager fills that need.

By abstracting the differences and incompatibilities that each OEM platform presents, Egenera enables Fabric Based Infrastructures to be made up of HP, Fujitsu, Dell, or other hardware. Once abstracted, all these resources can be moved easily and fluidly to where they are needed with the same security and availability that’s required by the end users.

As evidenced by Egenera’s 2011 financial performance, demand for open vendor agnostic system management for FBI is at an inflection point of growing importance.

“2011 was an inflection year for the team at Egenera,” said Jim Bandanza, COO of Egenera. “We’ve signed many channel partners and with the growth of cloud computing, we’ve successfully penetrated into the cloud with a third of our business in SaaS and we saw hyper growth in our top line, all while staying in the black.”

In 2012, Egenera will continue to expand the functionality, flexibility and scalability of PAN Manager. Specifically, as companies are looking to leverage its existing hardware and need support for more open environments, users will be able to manage blade systems from different vendors as well as manage up to 16 domains, or up to 256 blades, as a single pool of resources – both critical concerns for IT managers who have large infrastructures with multiple systems vendors in their data center.

“While the financial results of the past year have been fantastic, we’re not nearly finished. We have more platforms to support, more functionality to add to the software and much more growth in front of us. We look forward to 2012 as a breakout year,” said Pete Manca, president and CEO of Egenera. “It’s important that as we go forward, we continue to meet our customers where they are and with the hardware they have, to both minimize their capital expenditures and support a heterogeneous infrastructure.”

Promotion Offers Industry-Leading HP and Egenera Solutions for a Bundled Price

BOXBOROUGH, MA – December 13, 2011 – Egenera, a pioneer in converged fabrics and infrastructure automation software, today announced a limited time promotion of a joint HP and Egenera converged fabric solution. This promotion comes at an important time in the adoption cycle of converged fabrics as roughly 50 percent of survey respondents at a recent Gartner Data Center conferenced stated they have implemented, or are in the process of implementing, fabric computing. While Egenera has been helping customers create converged fabrics for more than a decade, Egenera and HP announced a partnership earlier this year that features the availability of Egenera PAN Manager® Software on HP BladeSystem c-class server blades. This promotion builds on that partnership to make the fabric-based solutions more accessible to the market.

The promotion is available to eligible customers through July 31, 2012 with HP offering customers significant incentives on eligible HP ProLiant Server configurations when purchased as a solution with Egenera software. In addition, Egenera is offering substantial incentives on PAN Manager as part of the bundle. Eligible customers must order PAN Manager products for each blade in the configuration. Products can be ordered through HP or Egenera partners.

“With this offer, our customers will have an industry-leading solution that simplifies infrastructure management, provides service level assurances and yields significant cost savings in the continued build out of data centers or private clouds,” said John Humphreys, vice president of marketing for Egenera. “By packaging more value for our customers through a joint promotion with HP, we are leveraging industry standard blades to make compute fabrics open and affordable. Simply put, this promotion eliminates any lingering barriers to adoption.”

“PAN Manager products have always provided leading functionality and usability. This promotion provided us with an even greater value that we couldn’t pass up,” said Kim Jacques, SVP and CIO of American Capital. “The bundled solution allows for greater agility and scale for our server operations, reducing complexity, risk and cost while increasing efficiency and time to market.”

For more information and details on the promotion, please contact Egenera at info@egenera.com.

BOXBOROUGH, MA – November 8, 2011 – Egenera, a pioneer in converged fabrics and infrastructure automation software, today released the latest version of its flagship software product, PAN Manager® 7.1. This release includes new disaster recovery features that enable customers to protect virtual, physical and cloud infrastructure under a single process and automatically restore services should an outage occur. With PAN Manager, Egenera delivers a complete infrastructure automation platform that ensures applications have the capacity, availability and response time to meet service level requirements, enabling customers to move applications confidently into an enterprise cloud.

PAN Manager 7.1 comes at an important time in the cloud adoption cycle. According to a May 2011 Survey from CIO Magazine, more than 70 percent of enterprise companies questioned are actively pursuing cloud services. As cloud becomes a new platform for enterprise computing and the computing environment becomes more consolidated, PAN Manager plays an increasingly important role in reducing the risk and impact of infrastructure failures. With its simple “one-click” set-up, users can protect core IT services without relying on complex configuration synchronization between production and recovery sites.

PAN Manager 7.1 leverages commodity off-the-shelf blade servers along with network and IO virtualization technologies to create a pool of infrastructure that can be quickly and easily re-allocated to accommodate changes in workload. This wire-once, always-on, fabric converts infrastructure into an agile service. Additional features and benefits of PAN Manager 7.1include:

Significant CapEx and OpEx savings: Whether a physical or virtual server, the easily configured many-to-one disaster recovery solutions result in significant cost savings by avoiding hardware and license duplication.

One click recovery: PAN Manager automatically creates a map of the environment in XML which can be invoked with a single click. This not only restores the environment exactly with server, network and storage configurations and policies but also allows the customer to prioritize applications and set boot order.

Rapid restoration of services: When a failover or outage takes place, recovery is guaranteed and typically occurs in less than 60 minutes.

Increased scalability: The release of PAN Manager 7.1 has doubled the number of blades that can be managed by the software.

“Egenera pioneered infrastructure automation software more than ten years ago, and over time PAN Manager has proven its value in reducing IT costs while protecting our customers’ computing environments,” said Scott Geng, senior vice president of engineering. “With our latest version of PAN Manager, we are enabling organizations to move confidently into the cloud by leveraging our mature and proven software to bring enhanced reliability and automation of infrastructure services to private cloud environments.”

PAN Manager Software Also Brings Automated Self-Healing Clusters and “One Click” Protection to VMware Environments
BOXBOROUGH, MA – August 25, 2011 – Next week at VMworld, Booth #755, Egenera, the only provider of open converged infrastructure management software, will showcase the latest Egenera® PAN Manager® Software functionality. PAN Manager with Adaptive Capacity for VMware vSphere environments automatically delivers processing capacity to VMware clusters, as needed. This ensures an unprecedented level of performance and protection for virtualization environments, cloud infrastructures and the applications they run. Demonstrations of PAN Manager with Adaptive Capacity can be reserved by registering in advance.

This new functionality is designed to work with VMware by intercepting vCenter alerts for additional capacity and automatically transferring processing resources from outside the resource pool. Adaptive Capacity works whether the need for capacity is the result of a server failure, a burst in demand for existing virtual machines (VM) or simply the result of normal capacity consumption associated with adding new VMs to the cluster. Either way, the result is that administrators no longer need to maintain cold spares or locate and manually configure, provision and add new hosts to a VMware cluster. This means that with PAN Manager, vSphere administrators can maintain high levels of utilization on their clusters and avoid having to step through these time consuming, manual processes. Using PAN Manager in conjunction with vSphere ensures capacity is automatically available for all virtualized business- and mission-critical applications.

PAN Manager also delivers many-to-one disaster recovery (DR). Compared with traditional DR solutions, Egenera’s unique many-to-one DR provides guaranteed, verifiable remote recovery with the added financial benefit of leveraging shared DR infrastructure to drive both hardware and software license consolidation. This functionality not only helps to further reduce data center cost and complexity, but also increases hardware utilization and frees additional server capacity that can be reallocated for other workloads.

“Egenera PAN Manager brings agility and cost savings to the infrastructure just as VMware, through virtualization, does for the application stack. PAN Manager automates and mitigates the pervasive challenges of protecting IT services, provisioning infrastructure and capacity planning,” said John Humphreys, vice president of marketing. “Downtime is costly. Infrastructure provisioning is time intensive. Capacity planning is unpredictable. Unified management makes these processes efficient, effective and automatic. PAN Manager, together with VMware, is changing what it means to have a modern data center.”

About PAN Manager Software
PAN Manager provides unified management, simplified operation from a single user interface, assured availability and verified protection for physical and virtual computing environments. Silos of physical and virtual network infrastructure can quickly be transformed into an integrated and reliable computing platform for cloud and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) initiatives.

PAN Manager combines the simplification benefits of unified computing with integrated availability and disaster recovery services for both physical and virtual infrastructures. The software enables customers to use commodity off-the-shelf hardware components to create a pool of infrastructure that can be quickly and easily re-allocated to both bare metal and virtualized workloads. The result is a business-critical infrastructure with massive hardware and operational efficiencies. With 10 years of rock-solid performance, PAN Manager is deployed at more than 1,600 sites globally. The software certified on hardware from Egenera, Dell, Fujitsu and HP, and storage from 3Par, Dell, EMC, Fujitsu, HDS, HP, IBM, NetApp and others.

BOXBOROUGH, MA – August 24, 2011 – Egenera, the only provider of open converged infrastructure management software, today announced that it has been named one of the “10 Emerging Infrastructure Software Vendors You Need To Know” by CRN, a well-known and respected source for news, analysis and perspective for value-added resellers (VARs) and technology integrators. The listing profiles emerging vendors with new or enhanced technologies in the infrastructure software space that CRN believes the channel needs to know.
The CRN “Need to Know” list is a comprehensive directory of the major players in infrastructure software, making it easy for busy VARs to get in front of the right vendors and the right people in the IT landscape. Vendor selection was based on nominations from solution providers and editors and is judged based on channel influence, effectiveness and visibility and business and sales impact. For those solution providers looking for vendors that offer the right mix of capabilities for their customers and profit opportunities for themselves, emerging vendors in the software infrastructure industry can be a good start.

“Top resellers and systems integrators turn to CRN every day for advice and information about new technologies and ideas that can build their businesses by better serving customers. We’re very pleased to be recognized as a company that is changing how enterprises think about and manage data centers,” said John Humphreys, vice president of marketing. “PAN Manager Software gives value-added resellers and systems integrators the advantage of going to market with a best of breed, hardware independent management solution tailored for virtual environments. Simply put, with ‘One Click’ business continuity, PAN Manager makes cloud and virtualization more reliable.”

“While the infrastructure software industry may be mature, that doesn’t make it static,” said Kelley Damore, Vice President, Editorial Director, CRN/Everything Channel. “New companies are always entering the market with targeted products to address the needs created by such trends as cloud computing. This need to know list takes a look at 10 Software Infrastructure vendors that are boosting their presence in the IT channel.”

In May 2011, Egenera was recognized by Everything Channel in CRN’s new Virtualization 100 list which features the top 100 vendors in the virtualization space.

BOXBOROUGH, MA – August 1, 2011 – Egenera, the only provider of open converged infrastructure management software, announced today that the company has entered into a reseller agreement with Marcum Technology, a consulting and systems integration firm specializing in virtualization, storage, business continuity and information security solutions. The partnership increases Egenera’s network of HP value-added resellers (VAR) and provides broader channel penetration into the Tri-State area and eastern Pennsylvania, areas dominated by the data intensive financial services, insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Marcum Technology is part of Marcum LLP, one of the largest independent public accounting and advisory services firms in the nation. Egenera and Marcum Technology are HP Preferred Partners. Egenera is also a member of HP AllianceONE, a comprehensive partner program focused on HP’s Converged Infrastructure strategy.

“Marcum Technology is a valued addition to our family of partners. Our respective sales and support organizations are aligned and we have hit the ground running,” said Jim Bandanza, Chief Operating Officer, Egenera. “Egenera PAN Manager plays to Marcum’s strengths in delivering state of the art business continuity and data center management solutions. And Marcum’s agility, expertise and commitment to providing technology choice to its clients are qualities Egenera values and shares.”

“Egenera PAN Manager Software is an excellent complement to the portfolio of technologies we deliver and bolsters Marcum’s virtualization and business continuity practices,” said Gary Doria, Director of Sales, Marcum Technology. “PAN Manager has several advantages over competitors and benefits to our clients: unique, automated one-click high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) capabilities for both virtual and physical servers; it is the only converged infrastructure solution with multi-platform support to protect client technology investments, and the only one with more than a decade of proven performance in enterprise data centers across the globe; and it rounds out Marcum’s robust virtualization practice by allowing us to rapidly extend the cost-savings and agility benefits of converged infrastructure management to our clients. Managing both virtual and physical servers from the same user interface, consolidating infrastructure, and ensuring business continuity are top priorities for our clients.”

Doria added that “HP constitutes a significant portion of Marcum’s revenue, so Egenera’s HP AllianceONE partnership and Converged Infrastructure Ready certification were very influential in our decision to partner. We are particularly enthusiastic about Egenera PAN Manager for HP BladeSystem which the company developed in collaboration with HP. Given that HP has 55 percent of the blade server market, the solution has tremendous potential.”
