Zion Methodist Church history to be discussed

The history of the Zion Methodist Church will be featured at a free presentation by Rev. James Peterson and hosted by the Greate Egg Harbor Township Historical Society at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24 at the church, located at 652 Zion Road. The structure, built in 1764, became a church in 1822 and is one of the oldest churches in the area. Call Tamara Lamb at (609) 383-2323, ext 10.

Hostile work environment suit settled

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – A former police officer has settled his civil lawsuit against the township and two of its police officers for $110,000.
Robert Gleisberg, who worked at the department 1985-2007, filed charges in 2008 in Superior Court of New Jersey. In the lawsuit, Gleisburg named Egg Harbor Township, Police Capts. Hector Tavarez and William Fair, both of whom are now retired, as creating what he called a “hostile work environment.”

Clementoni receives N.J. Meritorious Service Medal

Mario Clementoni Sr. of EggHarborTownship received the N.J. Meritorious Service Medal at a ceremony held Monday on the Battleship New Jersey.

The coveted state award was presented by the Department of Military and Veteran Affairs

Clementoni joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old.

Atlantic County issued the following traffic advisories for Egg Harbor Township:

Tilton Road, Washington Avenue and Delilah Road

On Thursday, May 24, lane shift traffic patterns may be in effect on several roadways in Egg Harbor Township for work by the NJ Turnpike Authority. Traffic directors will be on site to assist motorists on affected portions of Tilton Road, Washington Avenue and Delilah Road. Work will take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. today.

Zion Road

On Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25, a periodic lane shift will be in effect on Zion Road at the Garden State Parkway overpass in Egg Harbor Township, between the hours of 9 a.m.and 5 p.m., for work by the N.J. Turnpike Authority.

Egg Harbor Township received ownership of the pit at Scullville Park through foreclosure proceedings after the previous owner failed to comply with a judge’s order to restore the property. The action was ordered as a result of the owner’s violation of the township’s soil mining ordinance, Township Administrator Peter Miller said. The 150-acre tract of land known as the “Temple Tract” was purchased from Temple University in Nov. 2001 for $1,370,000 after someone donated the land to the school. N.J. Green Acres Program funded $650,000 of the purchase through a low-interest loan and $350,000 through a grant. The township fronted the remaining $370,0000. The land on which the township’s Arboretum and Nature Center now sits was seized after its former owner failed to pay taxes on the property. An article on Page 1 of the May 17 edition incorrectly explained how the township received title of these parcels.

Atlantic City employee convicted for selling heroin on the job

MAYS LANDING – A 58-year-old Egg Harbor Township man was convicted Tuesday, May 22 of official misconduct and drug offenses in connection with distributing heroin in 2009, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said.

On Feb. 3, 2010, Akbar Malik Salaam, a nine-year employee of Atlantic City, was arrested and charged in connection with distributing heroin at the All Wars Memorial Building, where he was employed as the building manager with the Department of Public Works.

Salaam was charged with official misconduct, distribution of heroin, distribution within 500 feet of a public zone and distribution within 1,000 feet of a school zone.
