Kitchen Littles was one of the most popular miniature kitchen play sets ever made. Originally manufactured by Tyco beginning in 1996 and has been off the market for a number of years. Kitchen Littles is now being manufactured by another company (International Playthings) and available in stores as of late June 2008! These sets are popular because of highly detailed features. Made from heavy die-cast metal and highly-detailed plastic. Sized to play with an 11 1/2" fashion doll or Barbie. Collectible and affordable - sets range in price (MSRP) $10-$30 US.

Your Rainy Day Stash

Every parent needs a secret stash of activities to do when the kids have the rainy day blues. Before the first, “I’m bored…” is uttered, pull out your secret stash and get everyone involved in a fun activity.

Put together a craft box you can get out whenever you the need arises. Put in construction and white paper, markers, crayons, many different kinds of stickers, and various things you can collect over time like pom poms, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, etc. A couple of good websites to find printouts and simple craft activities is www.makingfriends.com and www.enchantedlearning.com .

Turn favorite books into rainy day pretend adventures. Read “Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. Wrap up in a soft blanket like the caterpillar in its cocoon. At the end of the book burst out of your cocoon and flap your blanket like the wings of the butterfly! For added fun, play the Very Hungry Caterpillar board game.

A good game that is always different is to give them a little selection of household items - paper clips, straws, cotton balls - you name it and have them invent a game to play with each other. See how many games they can make up with the items and they have to teach it to the other one (or you) and play it before doing it again.

If you can’t beat the rainy day blues – join it! If there is no lightening in the area, put on your rain gear and head out for a walk in the rain. Stomping some puddles and making a few mud pies might be just the thing to brighten your own rainy day!

Kids Summer Science Project: Flying Insects

Its summer and time to get outside and play! Do you have a problem with pesky flying insects like yellow jackets and wasps? If your kids are like mine, they don’t want anywhere near them! We have a fun homemade science project to get rid of and study them in the process. Studying them will demystify the fear. Of course, parent supervision is needed for this project and use common sense as these buggers sting!

These insects feed on pollen. To make your own trap you need:

plastic bottle (such as an empty bleach bottle or milk jug)

sugary candy like gum drops, etc.

string

paperclip

Rinse out your plastic bottle. Cut a hole in the front of your plastic bottle to make a window. The hole should not extend into the bottom half of the bottle. Thread your string thru the screw top lid long enough to hang half-way down the window. Tie paperclip to string. Screw the lid back onto the bottle and cut string long enough to hang on a hook. Attach sugary candy to the paperclip inside the bottle. Fill the bottom of the bottle with water, just below the window.

The insects carry the sugar (pollen) on their bodies. As they feed on your candy and load their bodies up with sugar, they will become too heavy, fall into the water, and drown. You may need to experiment with different types of food and candy (meat like hotdogs may work too) until you find what attracts the insects you are after.

Hang your trap close to your open windows and doors, or close to your outside play area. Don’t hang it in your open windows, doors, or play area or you are attracting them to the place you don’t want them! Rinse the bottle out and reset the trap every 1-2 weeks.
