But I was considering doing this in hopes of installing a second copy of my operating system on what I have believed (of partitioning) to now would be effectively treated like a seperate hard drive. This was in part as a "last hope desperate" effort to escape a persistant problem I've been unable to fix for quite a long time without reformatting the drive and losing all that is on it.

The persistant problem is my inability to install service pack 1 (which prevents 2 as well). That issue led me to repair install and then use of the scannow tool. The log in there identified two files that simply refuse to be replaced during the repair install. I had thought it because of a corrupt sector on the harddrive, but a check of drive for errors did not reveal any.

I stopped trying around the point that the next step was messing with the registry because I don't know what to do in there and don't wish to cause worse problems by guessing. All I could think to do without reformatting and losing everything was to halfway start from scratch, doing a fresh install to a second partition, and moving things one by one to it.

But an article I found about whether to partition claimed that a number of programs may insist on installation to C drive, and that even if they didn't, it may make entries in the registry which would remain on C. I don't know if you could remap and thus call your new partition C and circumvent the issue that way or not. Essentially, I don't know enough to say whether my idea (basically a dual boot that treats the new partition as C) is possible, practical, or isolated enough that if it were some kind of virus damage, the original couldn't reach across partitions to do the same to my new installation. In other words, if the whole concept is feasible at all.

So my first question I guess is if a true installation of the operating system can be done to a second partition. As in second registry which that copy of the operating system would use instead of the original on C.

Second, is a remapping (renaming essentially, right?) of the partition letters to make a new C possible? Is it necessary?

Finally, isolation. Can any program run under either operating system from either partition see the other partition and access it? If so, does such cross partition access require cooperation (read as permission) from the user. More to the point, can you prevent cross partition access, effectively isolating the two installations from one another?

Any help clarifying these matters would be greatly appreciated. read more

Send/Receive: Operation failed. Suppose you go on to the computer to check emails and you don't move the mouse or the keyboard for 1min - it will usually go on correctly. But if you move the mouse or keyboard to take the screensaver off because you are busy checking the emails - they supposedly call that a "rapid dismissal" of the screensaver. The other occasions that the screensaver goes on - if you do other "rapid dismissals" - the screensaver often does not go back on in 1min and it goes on in like 1min + 60sec or something like that. If you do it again - move the mouse or keyboard to take the screensaver off - it again does not go on in the 1min and instead goes on in like 1min60sec + 60sec or something like that. And if you let the screensaver go on and not try to take it off - it seems to go back on with the regular 1min the way you put it.

Somewhere on some websites they said that it is the computer or Internet Explorer that "assumes" that if you do a rapid dismissal of the screensaver - it assumes that it is because you prefer that it not go on right away and purposely modifies the regular 1min and makes it like 1min + some seconds like in the example and it does that quite often. Also if you let it go on and not do any rapid dismissals of it - the computer or Internet Explorer puts it back to its regular 1min to go on the way you put it.

Therefore....

A - Why do screensavers often not go on the way they are put to go on?
B - Is there a way to make them always go on consistently the way you put them to go on?

Lost Automatic Launch of Quicken on Transaction Download

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/windows-vista/15/10454440/lost-automatic-launch-of-quicken-on-transaction-download.aspx

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/windows-vista/15/10454440/lost-automatic-launch-of-quicken-on-transaction-download.aspx

I recently ran a scan from Kaspersky Antivirus. It identified several conditions which were potential security exposures and gave the option of having them fixed. I went ahead with them, but misplaced my notes as to what parameters were changed.

Prior to this, I would routinely download transactions from my bank and credit card accounts, which would carry out the download and then, with no intervention, Quicken would be launched and would receive the downloaded file.

Since the changes were made, the download no longer launches Quicken but instead gives me the choice of saving the new transaction file or cancelling the process. (This is not a major issue, since I figured out that all I have to do to get the desired result is save the file on my desktop and double click the new icon, which in fact launches Quicken and leaves me at the same point that I previously got to automatically).

But I'd like to determine what parameter(s) might have been modified to cause this change so I can put it back the way it was before. read more

Windows Vista(TM) Build 6002 This Copy of Windows is not Genuine !

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/windows-vista/15/10263869/windows-vistatm--build-6002-this-copy-of-windows-is-not-genuine-.aspx

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/windows-vista/15/10263869/windows-vistatm--build-6002-this-copy-of-windows-is-not-genuine-.aspx

Hi Everybody :)

The autoplay would just flash up on screen for a split second and disappear.

I can access my files manually by clicking it. When I right click the drive to Open with Autoplay, it would flash up a split second then disappears as well. I have checked everything
- Shell Hardware is running
- Control panel Autoplay Settings has been reset to defaults, unchecked the Autoplay for all media & devices then save then checked it again to enable it
- checked the registries are set correctly which they are to enable Autoplay to run

The strange thing is if I was to select Open folder to view files using windows explorer for the CD/DVD (only for this device), it would immediately show the files from the CD/DVD without a problem but if I was to select any of the others, nothing would happen except for the split second show up on the screen.

I've been trying to figure out how to fix this problem for the last few days and have been unsuccessful so I'm now hoping someone here can help me out. I cannot tell you when this problem started and I have tried doing a System Restore going back only a few days ago which was not far back enough for me to succeed unfortunately. Is there a way I can restore Autoplay using the Vista Recovery disk? Or do I have to do a clean installation? Other than this problem, everything seems to be working OK.
I have search in a lot of places for this solution and have not been able to find one so maybe someone here can help me out.
I can't find any definitive response to this question. I understand why the SAPI 4 Mary won't work on 64-bit Vista, because the Microsoft SAPI 4 engine is 32-bit, and isn't the same standard as SAPI 5. But SAPI 5 voices (not engines), from non-Microsoft vendors which worked under 32-bit Windows will still work under 64-bit Windows, specifically Vista 64, because I've gotten them to work.

However, even if one installs the entire approximately 68 Mb SAPI 5.1 SDK, on 64-bit Vista, while one can see the Mary and Mike voices listed with any other SAPI 5 voices, the Mary and Mike voices fail to work. There's just nothing... no speech whatsoever. This seems rather strange, since other SAPI 5 voices in the same list work fine.

Microsoft obviously has no plans to address this, or some solution would be out there. Microsoft's answer is to apparently move on to SAPI 5.3, which is supposed to be backward compatible to earlier versions of SAPI 5, yet their own Mike and Mary voices won't work in Vista 64. All they seem to care about is Microsoft Anna, which may sound more natural to some people, but Mary and Mike were good enough for many users, and far more responsive.

I don't have access to a Windows 7 machine, but I've read one can run its speech control panel under the 64-bit version and get it to see and use 32-bit speech engines and their voices, so if anyone can shed any light on this as far as getting Mary to work on 64-bit Windows 7, I'd appreciate hearing of this.

I'd particularly hope to hear from someone with Microsoft about why they have no intentions to at least keep SAPI 5 Mike and Mary working under their 64-bit operating systems. Users should have more free options besides just Anna.
I would like to be able to turn off the webmail draft feature. My computer automatically saves a draft whether you want it or not.
I prefer to "save as", but I am not able to, once the draft comes on after typing only a few lines.

Once this occurs, I can never print or view, email or send the entire email, but only the part which is visable in the box where I
am typing. I can find nowhere to change the draft setting, and I do not click "save draft". So once that automatic draft comes on,
I cannot use it for anything. I am ready to tear my hair out.
Thank you,

I have an ACER ASPIRE 7535G laptop which is just under a year old. I bought it last September. It has all worked fine but recently started running slow especially on the internet. Internet Explorer browser used to randomly 'Not Respond' then shut down.

After defrag of the computer and virus scans etc Norton Antivirus recommended a clean up of programmes at start up. Since doing this my laptop cannot find any wireless network to connect to. Other laptops in the house and the home computer connects fine with the wireless router. As did my laptop until the day before the clean up. Before the clean uparound 10 wireless routers were found which I'm assuming are in neighbouring buildings. I also have no vista dvd/cd installation as my computer came fully set up with everything needed. Please help

I've searched the net to find a solution but had no success. I'm not very good (at all) with computers either.

Googling 80070005 leads me to believe that the error is caused by the operating system. I've also triple checked whether the file I'm trying to register is mistake free, and it can be registered/unregistered at will on a machine not using 64 bit vista.
Is there a fix for this or did microsoft let me buy vista, then not help me fix it so that it can perform tasks which it is supposed to perform, then end support altogether for the OS (july 13th 2010), and then want $120 for their cheapest iteration of windows 7? read more

Backup & Restore Center - Vista

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/windows-vista/15/10158551/backup--restore-center--vista.aspx

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/windows-vista/15/10158551/backup--restore-center--vista.aspx

I cannot open the B & R Center in Vista. I am operating in safe mode with networking. I was attacked yesterday by System32/Heur and associated viruses and had hades getting rid of it. I am 95% sure I finally did by running malwarebytes anti-malware in quick scan. It found 16 infections and says it got rid of them. AVG 9.0 kept telling me it put them in the vault but it never did so I used MWB as described and the alerts have not returned.

I then ran the MWB full scan twice and both times it game me a clean bill of helath, but I am taking no chances. I want to do a backup now to my external hard drive, and even though I have the B &R Center shortcut showing on my start menu it will nto open. So I typed in "backup" in search and tried it that way, still no joy. I right clicked the icon and went to "File location" and it took me to Control Panel but I cannot find the B&R Center anywhere in the CP.

Is this problem because I am in safe mode? I would think that B&R would surely operate in safe mode. Did the virus delete my B&R Center?
I have a problem with Powermanagement(Speedstep), which will not work as long as the mouse is plugged in. I have no other problems with the mouse. In device manager, mouse and keyboard are enabled to allow both to wake computer. In USB Hub/ properties, the check box to enable machice to turn off this device to save power is not checked. I have tried other mice devices and all have this same problem. I have also done a clean install but the problem remains the same. Now, i have read thet there are some issues with mice and powermanagement, but i never had this problem when i first got the computer. 5 months later my computer restarted itself and when i signed in, i got a windows box telling me to check for a solution. The problem was bluescreen and this happened a couple of days later. Even after a clean install, i still have the problem. So i`m hoping someone on here may have a resolution. Thanks in advance.

Hope someone here can help me solve my little "problem".

I have tried this and the same thing happens in Outlook Express, Outlook 2000-2007, Windows Mail and last Windows Live Mail (windows7).

I use IMAP for my email account. Since I want to be able to see the emails I send, I use the option "store special folders on the IMAP server".

The folder for sent emails is by my provider named 'Sent', so I change the the special folder from "Sent Items" to "Sent".

So far all well. When I send email the get stored in the correct folders, but here is where my problem comes; when I select the sent folder, there is no column for attachments (the binderthingy) and it is not available when I try to add it. The strange thing is that the 3 other special folders that I changed the name for also, have the attachment column. So the problem seem to be only with the Sent folder.

So, basically my question is; how can I get the attachment column in the sent folder? Via registry maby?

Best Regards,

For any error occured, system will create an entry in Application event log using the custom event source - "Application Manager".
I am really at loose ends with this one and have finally given in trying to figure out what has gone wrong.

I partitioned my hard drive to have an additional drive for my data
(why vendors don't do this to begin with is beyond me) any hoo!! So I
have C:\ for applications/programs and F:\ for data. My next step was
to move My Documents and My Pictures to the data drive. I did the
usual on the Location tab I browsed to the desired location and used
the move option that worked as per normal. My Pictures and My
Documents are now at the root of F:\ as I wanted job done!!

Not quite now when I look in the start menu or folder list I see not 1
but 3 My Documents 2 with the lovely blue folders and one with a normal
yellow folder. Originally I saw in the start menu F:\Data twice for
both my documents and my pictures with a lot of playing around I have
managed to make it display My Documents but when I select display my
pictures it displays another my documents? Not too sure what has
happened there?? I am thinking I should have moved My Pictures to
inside My Documents and I have now confused poor Vista but it will not
alow me to move any of these folders now so I am where I am I suppose.

I have tried deleting one of the My Documents but that stops me from
accessing any of the My Documents folders/links. Functional my
computer is working fine but it is just irritating that I have so many
links to My Documents and besides doing a repair or rebuild I thought
maybe someone else has had this problem and will be able to advise me
how to resolve it.

Thanks in advance for any sound advice given. read more

DCOM on Windows Vista

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/windows-vista/15/10068863/dcom-on-windows-vista.aspx

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/community/windows-vista/15/10068863/dcom-on-windows-vista.aspx

Hello,

I have an EXE COM Server that runs as a restricted user on Vista. Upon starting the Server, it registers a COM object under HKCU\Software\Classes (it does not have permissions to register it under HKCR). The registered pieces includes the clsid, interfaces, typelib, etc within respective Subkeys under HKCU\Software\Classes.

At runtime however, I noticed that the EXE COM Server is unable to export an interface to a remote client. I figured this was because the COM runtime does not seem to consult HKCU\Software\Classes\Interface\<IID> and hence reports the "Interface not supported" error upon not finding a marshaler to export that interface.

I don't see this problem on prior versions of Windows (including XP) where the COM runtime does consult the HKCU keys (upon failing to locate the Interface under HKCR) and finds the interface and it's marshaling information registered there.

Does anyone know of any COM/DCOM changes in Vista that prevent the COM runtime from consulting HKCU in addition to HKCR.
