My goal was to create something outside typical institutional design rules, to make the 5.5 x 8.5" postcard stand out when one received it in the mail. I decided to put the focus of the eye, or the eye-catcher, on a big blob of black. I think it works well because the eye is drawn then to the rest of the text.

Though ECG focuses on the needs of smaller businesses, sole proprieters, and individual artists in numerous fields, I still see it is as important to keep up with the larger, more corporate design and service trends.

Creating a brand identity is essential to any business that interacts with their customers on a more personal level and wants to give their business a more unique image, based on the personality of the leadership. Just look at these amazing examples.

Why does it work?

An even more challenging question is: Why is Apple the leader in this new less-is-more design war? What do they do differently?

From advertising to industrial design, they just seem to nail it every time. I found this article fascinating - it's a deconstruction of what the simple policies are for Apple's design department, and what designers can learn from them.

It's a fascinating watch, and it confirms something about human nature that I've long suspected.

Every day our digital horizons are expanded by the ever-quickening evolution of software. The result, of course, is that more possibilities come to light in terms of DIY, fonts, and design options in general. The more quickly these changes happen, the more we as creative beings long for simplicity.

Helvetica provides that simplicity, and a dose of cosmopolitan sleek. Designers since the 50s have returned again and again to its saving grace.

It's the simple things in life.

iTunes Iconography

If you look at iTunes icon designs, you'd never know that Apple has been the computer of choice for the design industry since the early 90's (in fact, pre-Jobs, it was the designers that kept them afloat). They're just plain awful:

In the music industry, amongst the consultant-hip-elite, it's a cardinal sin to use music notes or media (e.g. CDs, etc.) in a logo - it's just plain cheesy and ordinary.

The real issue here is that these logos say nothing about the professional and excellent quality of the iTunes product.

But, their more recent logo comes closer, as it brand-identifies its source:
