Interim President Adly Mansour is expected to issue three presidential decrees before the establishment of the parliament but after the results of the constitutional referendum, his advisor Ali Awad said on Tuesday.

In a phone call to Dream TV Channel, Awad said that the three statements would be about the law regulating presidential elections, the law organizing the exercise of political rights, and the a law on people’s assembly.

Awad added that according to the constitutional declaration issued after the ousting of former President Mohamed Morsi, the interim president is entitled to decide whether parliamentary elections would be held first or presidential elections.

Politicians and public opinion have urged the president to run presidential elections first, because they found the 2012 model of parliament elections before presidential a failure.

to avoid this , you must follow these steps:
1 . Avoid high- risk situations , such as not to go back to the neighborhood
that was used to get drugs and stay away from bad friends .
2 . Get help if drug use again.
3 . Commitment to the special treatment :

It may seem as if the patient is recovering and that he does not need to keep
taking steps to stay free from addiction , but it should not stop seeing the
psychiatrist , and go to the support group meetings its own or take prescribed
medication ; as the opportunity to stay free from addiction great if follow-up
treatment after recovery .

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt: The Misdemeanor Court of Appeal in Alexandria has reduced the sentencing of 14 young women Saturday, who were arrested while protesting in support of the Muslim Brotherhood, from 11 years and one month to a suspended sentence of one year, while dropping all charges against seven minor girls.

The girls, who are part of the 7 a.m. Movement, were sentenced on November 27 on charges of rioting, public disorder, blocking the public road, and terrorizing the security of citizens.

The harsh sentence caused an uproar, with local and international human rights organizations condemning the court’s decision.

Ahmed el-Hamrawy, head of the defense team, said in his defense before the Misdemeanor Appeal Court of Alexandria that the initial investigation report never mentioned that the girls possessed any weapons or that they were inciting violence against police and army.

Hamrawy added that international charts and agreements approved by Egypt do not criminalize the right of demonstrating, and that investigations of National Security affirmed that the girls’ protest began peacefully from Sidi Beshr district to Syria Street in Alexandria .

He questioned the testimonies of witnesses based on their affiliation to the police and the current regime, both of which the girls were protesting against, in addition to the differences between their testimonies given to the police and to the prosecution’s investigations.

Egypt is the gift of the Nile River to Egyptians, and Egypt is the gift of Egyptians to humanity.

Egypt, with the genius of its location and history, is Africa’s outlet to the Mediterranean Sea and the estuary of the Nile, the greatest river of the continent.

The Arab Republic of Egypt, with the genius of its location and history, is the heart of the entire world. It is the junction of the world’s civilizations and cultures, and the crossways of its communications and marine transportation.

This is Egypt. An eternal homeland for Egyptians and a message of peace and love for all peoples.

At the beginning of history, human conscience dawned inside the hearts of our great ancestors. Their benevolent will united and they established the first centralized state that regulated and organized the lives of the Egyptians on the banks of the Nile. They created the most wonderful marvels of civilization. Their hearts had contemplated the sky before the Earth recognized the three monotheistic religions.

Egypt is the cradle of religion and the symbol of the glory of the Abrahamic religions.

Moses grew up on Egyptian land where the divine light appeared to him and where God’s message was revealed to him.

Egyptians embraced the Virgin Mary and her newborn, then sacrificed thousands of martyrs in defense of the Church of Christ.

When the last of the prophets, Mohamed, Peace Be Upon Him, was sent to all people to perfect morality, our hearts and minds opened up to the light of Islam. We have been the best soldiers on earth for jihad in the cause of God and have spread the message of truth and religious sciences across the world.

This is Egypt, a homeland in which we live and which lives inside of us.

In the modern age, minds enlightened and humanity matured; nations advanced in the path of science, holding the mottos of freedom and equality. Mohamed Ali established the modern state of Egypt, founded by a national army. The son of Al-Azhar Rifa’a al-Tahtawi called for a homeland that is “a place for happiness shared between its children.” We Egyptians struggled to catch up with progress. We offered martyrs and sacrifices in many upheavals, uprisings, and revolutions until our national army responded to the tremendous popular will in the revolution of January 25 to June 30 that called for freedom, human dignity, social justice and the restoration of Egypt’s independent will.

This revolution is an extension of a path of national struggle represented by Ahmed Orabi, Mostafa Kamel and Mohamed Farid, and culminates two great revolutions in our modern history:

- The revolution of 1919, which removed British protection from the Egyptians’ shoulders and established the principle of citizenship and equality among the people of the national community. The leader of the revolution, Saad Zaghloul, and his successor Mustafa al-Nahhas, pursued democracy with the motto, “right is above power and the nation is above the government.” Meanwhile, Talaat Harb laid the foundation stones of the national economy.

- The revolution of July 23, 1952, which was led by the eternal leader Gamal Abdel Nasser and embraced the popular will. The evacuation of occupying troops and the generations’ dream of independence came true. Egypt opened up to the Arab nations, the continent of Africa, and the Islamic world. It supported liberation movements across continents and walked at a steady pace on the road to development and social justice.

This revolution is an extension of the revolutionary path of Egyptian nationalism and an affirmation of the most trustworthy handhold between the Egyptian people and the national army, which has borne the trust and responsibility of protecting the homeland. Thanks to the army, we achieved victory in our major battles since we defeated the tripartite aggression in 1956 until the defeat of defeat with the glorious victory of October 1973, which granted President Anwar Sadat a special place in our recent history.

The revolution of January 25 to June 30 is unique amongst the major revolutions in the history of humanity because of the massive popular participation, estimated to be tens of millions of citizens.

It is also unique because of the prominent role of young people looking forward to a bright future. The masses bypassed classes and ideologies and headed towards expansive national and human horizons in the protection of army to the people and with the blessing of Al-Azhar and the national Church. It is unique with its peacefulness and ambition to achieve freedom and social justice.

This revolution is a sign and a good omen. It is a sign to a past that is still present and an omen for a future aspired to by all of humanity.

The world is about to fold the final pages of the age of adulthood, which has been torn by conflicts of interests between the east and the west, the north and the south, and has witnessed conflicts and wars between classes and peoples. The dangers that threaten human existence and life are increasing on Earth upon which God granted us succession to authority. Humanity aspires to move from the age of adulthood to the age of wisdom so as to build a new humane world where truth and justice prevail and where freedoms and human rights are protected. We Egyptians view our revolution as a return to our contribution in writing human history.

We believe that we can draw inspiration from the past, spur the present on and make our way to the future. We can revive our homeland and rise. We believe that every citizen is entitled to live on this land in peace and security and to make the most of his present and future.

We believe in democracy as a means to the future and a way of life. We believe in political plurality, peaceful devolution of power and affirm the right of the public to make its own future. The public, alone, is the source of authority. Freedom, human dignity and social justice are rights of every citizen. We, as well as the generations to come, enjoy sovereignty in a sovereign home.

We now write a constitution that embodies the generations’ dream of a prosperous, cohesive society and a just state that achieves the aspirations of the present, the future and the entire society.

We now write a constitution that completes the establishment of a modern democratic state with civil rule. We write a constitution to close the door to any corruption or tyranny and to heal the wounds of the past from the time of the ancient Eloquent Peasant to the victims of negligence and the martyrs of the revolution in our present time. We write a constitution to spare our people from the injustice suffered for so long, especially as some segments of society were subject to many injustices due to their cultural identity or geographic location, such as the people of Nubia, Upper Egypt, Sinai and the oases.

We write a constitution that affirms that the principles of the Islamic Sharia law form the primary source of legislation, as stated[1] in the provisions of the Supreme Court, which is the only competent authority eligible to interpret the constitutional articles.

We write a constitution that opens the way to the future and is consistent with the international human rights law which we participated in writing and ratified. We see the richness of the sources of legislation and they open up prospects for progress ahead of us.

We write a constitution that safeguards our freedoms and protects the nation from all that threatens it or its national unity. We write a constitution that brings equality in rights and duties with no discrimination.

We are female and male citizens, we are the Egyptian people, masters in a sovereign home, this is our will, and this is the constitution of our revolution.

CAIRO: Egypt will retrieve the upper part of an ancient statue from Belgium that was stolen during the 2011 Revolution.

The statue, dating back to the 26th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, was broken into two halves when robbers destroyed its display cabinet and took the upper part, Antiquities Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said.

The relic, made of green Egyptian faience, was smuggled to Belgium and sold to a Belgian national, who in turn gave it to a French archaeologist to determine its authenticity, the minister said. Coincidentally, the French archaeologist had examined the same statue before in 1989 at the Egyptian Museum and immediately reported it to the Antiquities Ministry, he added.

Measures were taken by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry and embassy in Brussels, and Interpol and UNESCO were immediately addressed on the issue. The statue holder decided to return it for free to the Egyptian embassy for its homecoming, he said.

The statue was not listed among the museum’s missing artifacts, the minister regretted, saying that those in charge at the museum will be referred to the prosecution for questioning.

The 29-cm statue was originally unearthed in Giza in 1858, said ministry official Ali Ahmed.

The Egyptian Museum in Downtown Cairo took the hardest hit during the revolution when many priceless pieces were stolen on January 28, 2011, a day famously known as the “Friday of Wrath”.

Prominent writer Mohamed Hassanein Heikal

CAIRO: Prominent writer Mohamed Hassanein Heikal said Thursday that he believes Minister of Defense General Abdel Fatah al-Sisi will not run in the upcoming presidential elections.

Heikal blamed the current crisis facing the country on an absence of alternatives. He said during an interview with the Lebanese newspaper As-Safir that non-Islamist parties have failed to present themselves as viable alternatives to Islamists since the events of June 30. He stressed that such groups lack the required popularity to compete for power.

Heikal said Egypt is also suffering from the absence of security and stability, adding, “The revolution is not a medical operation. It needs a long time to express its ideas and to achieve serious transition.”

The writer also said the new draft of the constitution is unlikely to be permanent, due to the current unrest in the country. Mohamed Hassanein Heikal said Egyptians must commit to the political roadmap in order to restore security and stability.

Fayza Al-Louh, 48, watches her son Zaid, 19, study during power outage in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza Strip

The bitter sarcasm of this remark, written by Mohamed Abu Shar, a citizen of Gaza, encapsulates the mounting despair over the lack of access to the basic necessities of life in Gaza, which has been subject to an economic blockade since 2006.

Even the existing avenues to essential goods are being closed off. To the west and south, many of the Sinai-Gaza tunnels, the artificial arteries that had seen an unprecedented burst of activity for three years, have been closed off by the Egyptian army in order to stem the flow of smuggled arms and terrorists into Sinai and the illicit flow of Egyptian gasoline into Gaza.

The remaining supply lines are now strictly regulated. To the east and north, Israel has tightened the valves to reduce the influx of goods and materials to a trickle. The result: the Gazan private sector has been decimated and a gloom as dark as it had been before the end of the Israeli war on Gaza in 2008 prevails once again.

“Gaza is in the grips of a gradually worsening humanitarian crisis that threatens to reach catastrophic proportions in the near future,” continues Abu Shar in his account to Al-Ahram Weekly of the current situation in Gaza. “There no longer exists even a modest hope for remedying this crisis. Electricity, the chief energy source that moves the gears of every sector of daily life, is only available six hours a day, forcing people to condense most of their essential activities to those hours alone. Because of the gasoline crisis, gasoline powered generators will soon cease as an alternative energy source when the electricity goes off.

At those times when limited supplies of gasoline are available, it is sold at double or at triple its original price. Hospitals are particularly hard hit. In addition to shortages in medicines, emergency surgeries have to be performed by candlelight.”

Echoing Abu Shar, another Palestinian youth, Amr Hijazi, told the Weekly: “My only remaining hope now is to leave Gaza to anywhere that offers the means for subsistence.” He added that his feelings were shared by thousands of other young Palestinians from the Strip where poverty and unemployment are rife. “There are no jobs because there is no industry or production. Even those who a relatively better off find nothing to buy here,” he said.
Abu Shar notes that Israel provides some consumer goods through the Karem Abu Salem crossing. “But Israel is playing the game of compelling the people of Gaza to forget the tunnels on the Egyptian side and to depend exclusively on it for their supplies so that they will be entirely at Israel’s mercy.” He adds: “We don’t have the political luxury to choose.”

Hijazi resumes: “The tunnels have been shut down. The Hamas movement and related Palestinian factions are now the object of hatred and vicious media campaigns in Egypt. But there are around 1,750,000 people living in Gaza. Let’s say that of these, 750,000 belong to those factions. What fault is that of the remaining million? Why do they have to pay the price for the actions of those others, whether right or wrong?” With a touch of irony he adds: “I think that cigarettes are all that’s being smuggled in from Egypt now, because they are easy to smuggle. You can forget about anything else, because traffic through the tunnels has come to a complete halt.”

In Hijazi’s opinion, Hamas is now paying for its loyalty to the Muslim Brotherhood, which spent a year in power in Egypt. “However, it is the people who have to pay the higher price. In response to the demands to solve the crisis, Hamas officials say that everyone — the people and the government [in Gaza] — suffer from the blockade. In fact, even the privileged access to goods that members of the factions had enjoyed no longer exists, because the stockpiles of these goods have been depleted.”

Abu Shar frames the political/economic situation in different terms. “The Hamas government, with its arms, regiments and agencies, is cohesive. There are no divisions or even divergences in opinion. It is therefore difficult to presume that the movement would relinquish power in order to end the blockade.”

In Cairo, the idea has been circulating among some political and official quarters that Egypt should intervene militarily in Gaza in order to topple the Hamas government and restore the Palestinian Authority (PA) government there, thereby putting an end to a situation that has dangerous repercussions in Sinai because of jihadist groups whose networks span the Egyptian-Gaza border. Advocates of this idea argue that there is no longer any hope for inter-Palestinian reconciliation between the PA, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank, and the de facto semi-autonomous government of Hamas in Gaza. In the opinion of General Alaa Ezzeddin, director of the Centre of Military Studies, the idea is “madness”.

“While Egypt has acted to restore its security and sovereignty at the border, it has not forgotten the role it must play in the Palestinian cause regardless of what happens. It must continue to work to narrow the gap between the rival Palestinian camps.”

There have been some efforts to come to the Gazan people’s aid. The 15th Miles of Smiles convoy has just returned from Gaza, via the Rafah crossing, after delivering packages of medical supplies and other essential goods prepared by the Arab Doctors Federation. However, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, which received the convoy, the relief only meets 30 per cent of the needs in Gaza. Abu Shar points out that the food supplies brought in by the convoy’s 120 vehicles are barely sufficient to meet the food needs of hundreds of thousands of people for two days.

To further aggravate the plight of the people in Gaza, UNRWA is finding it difficult to perform its relief tasks under the current conditions of the blockade.

Spokesman for UNRWA in Gaza Adnan Abu Hassana told the Weekly that the crisis has become “aggravated beyond acceptable levels” in view of the unprecedented repercussions from certain shortages. “For example, the lack of electricity affects the wastewater system, which has collapsed entirely. The lack of fuel affects bakeries, which have had to stop operating, and therefore cannot supply bread. The shortages have affected the fishing industry, hospitals — everything. There is no room for survival in Gaza. Everything has ground to a complete halt. Even the municipalities are no longer able to collect garbage and clean the streets. It has become commonplace to hear that a surgery was performed by candlelight. Students have to study by candlelight.”

Abu Hassana speaks of a tertiary level of repercussions: the “negative energy” fuelled in a climate of rampant unemployment. He explains that there are no jobs in Gaza because the Israeli blockade prevents the entrance of building supplies, forcing most companies in Gaza that relied on supplies to shut their doors.

“The private sector has collapsed entirely. There are now a significant number of unemployed construction workers. To the ranks of the unemployed we can also add those who had operated and worked in the tunnels.”

Abu Hassana summed up the situation in Gaza as follows: “The blockade is tightening and appeals for help fall on deaf ears.

” He explained that UNRWA provides relief to 830,000 families in Gaza, or around 80 per cent of the population. This may be the highest number of relief recipients from any UNRWA programme. “Unless the blockade is lifted, life will become impossible,” he said. “Israel must stop these inhumane practices. It must allow in the goods and materials for industry so that Gazans can at least produce what they need and export the surplus so as to generate economic movement. At present, Gaza exports no more than one per cent of the level that was permitted in 2006. That the Karem Abu Salem crossing should remain open for a handful of consumer products, while all industry and export activity is choked off, flies in the face of all human rights laws and conventions.”

The Palestinians that spoke to the Weekly agree that Gaza was hit hard by the repercussions of political developments in Egypt. Even those who may understand why Egypt closed down the tunnels in reaction to the activities of Hamas and militia factions feel that nothing justifies perpetuating the gross human rights violations that are visited on the people of Gaza daily.

But if some Palestinians reproach other Arabs for ignoring — or even adding to — their plight, they are unanimous in blaming Israel as the chief cause.

As Abu Hassana put it: “True, the closure of the tunnels compounded the suffering in Gaza because they had offered some relief through the flow of smuggled goods and fuel from Egypt. However, Israel is primarily responsible for the plight. Under international law, Gaza is an occupied territory and the occupying power is responsible for providing the necessities for life. Israel is not doing this.”

He added: “We, in the UNRWA office, are in daily direct contact with the office of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and with the Israeli side in order to get things moving to alleviate the crisis.

There have been no tangible positive results yet, and I do not see any signs of a solution in the near future.”

Over the past 10 days, the recently endorsed protest law has been met with strong opposition from various political parties, public figures, political and legal activists and human-rights organisations.

Protests have been staged on a daily basis in clear defiance of the law and in order to object to the arrests of anti-law activists and politicians. The 6 April activist movement has called for a week of protests starting on 30 November. The Friday Muslim Brotherhood demonstrations were staged with acts of violence recorded and with dozens arrested.

However, the government has said that it intends to continue with the implementation of the law, adamantly backed by the cabinet of Prime Minister Hazem Al-Beblawi.

“There are no penalties for protesting, and the penalties in the law are only against those carrying weapons or not respecting peaceful demonstrations.

The law aims to protect peaceful protesters through providing guarantees of their safety,” Al-Beblawi said on Sunday at a meeting attended by the spokespersons of various ministries.

In a statement released earlier this week, the cabinet stressed its full support for the law and for the police, saying that the latter had made significant sacrifices in order to ensure Egypt’s stability and security. It said that it respected freedom of expression as long as this was practiced within an “organised framework” and that this freedom did not lead to “chaos”.

The statement came shortly after the security forces had forcibly dispersed a peaceful demonstration held in front of the Shura Council on 26 November in order to protest against constitutional articles allowing military trials of civilians.

Dozens of protesters were arrested by the police, who used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the rally.

Several security violations were reported, and activists said that several female protesters had been sexually harassed by the security forces during the dispersal.

On the same day and in response to the arrests of the protesters, hundreds of angry demonstrators gathered in Talaat Harb Square in downtown Cairo in order to protest against what they said were the losses of the gains made by the two popular revolutions over the past three years.

The protest was also dispersed by the security forces only minutes after it had begun for the same reason as the dispersal of the earlier one — that the protesters had not applied for a permit before holding their protest.

Prominent activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah was arrested on 28 November after his house was raided by the security forces.

6 April founder Ahmed Maher also handed himself in to the prosecutor-general on 30 November. Both Abdel-Fattah and Maher were accused of inciting violence and for calling for the 26 November unauthorised protest.

The Revolutionary Front and 6 April organised a protest on 30 November in solidarity with the detainees in front of the Abdeen court, where Maher was handing himself in to the prosecutor-general’s office. The protest had the title “Turn Yourself In,” and the protesters held up their ID cards as a gesture of handing themselves in to the prosecution.

On 3 December, political activist Ahmed Doma was arrested on charges of inciting violence during the Abdeen clashes. Dozens of activists headed to Basateen police station where Doma was detained, to show solidarity with their colleague.

On 1 December, the prosecutor-general renewed the detention of Abdel-Fattah for 15 days pending investigations. The following day, Maher was sent to Tora Prison in accordance with a decree passed by the general prosecution that ordered his imprisonment for four days pending investigations. “I believe that the regime is trying to wage a campaign of intimidation by suppressing freedoms and imprisoning activists,” one protester said.

Protests have also been held in various governorates against the new law by civil revolutionary forces, and not only by Islamists as has been the case over recent months. Hundreds of protesters gathered on 30 November in downtown Cairo to call for the release of detainees arrested during the Shura Council protest.

The protesters raised signs reading “this is not a protest,” sarcastically defying the “anti-protest law”. They stressed their right to protest and expressed concerns that the new law would undermine the right to protest, a key gain of the 25 January Revolution.

“What is happening marks a return to [Hosni] Mubarak’s oppressive regime, in which state security made arbitrary arrests and suppressed protests,” said 29-year-old engineer Ayman Kamel, who was participating in the protest.

The new law includes the provision that protest organisers notify the Interior Ministry of any protest at least three working days prior to its scheduled date. The ministry also has the right to refuse to allow any protest.

“In cases in which the security bodies believe a protest, according to the information they have, constitutes a threat to peace and security, the interior minister or assigned police chief reserves the right to ban a public meeting or demonstration, or postpone it, transfer it to another place, or change its route… Organisers may contest a ministerial decree before the Administrative Court, and a judge must rule on the case immediately,” the law says.

According to the new law, the Interior Ministry must receive the names of the organisers of a protest, its route, its scheduled beginning and end times, and even details of the slogans that will be chanted.

Mustafa Kamel Al-Sayed, a professor of political science at the American University in Cairo, said that it was acceptable to have a law that regulates protests, but the question was why this law had been timed in the way that it had.

“There is tension in the streets, not only from the Islamists but also from several of the civil revolutionary forces that participated in the 25 January Revolution that now believe that their revolution is being stolen from them by the remnants of the Mubarak regime and the return of the police state,” Al-Sayed told Al-Ahram Weekly.

“The cabinet’s firm stand towards enforcing the law makes it appear as if it is shutting its eyes to the demands of opposing voices, not only among the political elite but also inside the government itself,” he added.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Cooperation Ziad Bahaaeddin said this week that the law should have been issued by an elected legislative body. “I rejected this law, and I still do,” Bahaaeddin said. “Its articles restrict the freedom of peaceful protest.”

He added that in his opinion the existing penal code already included “sufficient articles” to deter non-peaceful protests.

Leader of the leftist Socialist Popular Alliance and deputy head of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) Abdel-Ghaffar Shokr said that the protest law needed to be reconsidered for four reasons.

“The cabinet needs to reconsider the law as it does not differentiate between peaceful protests and criminal acts committed during protests. There is no need to include committing crimes in a protest law since the penal code already deals with crimes,” Shokr said.

“Secondly, the notification of the Interior Ministry of the intention to stage a protest should be shortened to 48 hours. Thirdly, while the new law imposes a cordon around government buildings and essential facilities, it does not specify an exact distance and it is up to the authorities to demarcate the areas where public demonstrations can take place. Lastly, the draconian penalties specified by the law are not helpful,” he added.

According to the law, anyone carrying a weapon during protests can be imprisoned for up to seven years and fined between LE100,000 and LE300,000. Anyone engaging in an act of violence during a protest can be imprisoned for up to two years and fined a sum ranging from between LE50,000 and LE100,000.

Wearing a mask during a protest with the aim of committing a crime can be punished by up to one year in jail and a fine ranging from between LE30,000 and LE50,000.

The NCHR condemned the protest law, arguing that the government had ignored its recommendations on the first draft before passing it.

“NCHR members are appointed by the cabinet, and it acts to help improve the government’s image. When we find its members saying that the cabinet ignored its recommendations, it means we are facing a truly repressive regime,” activist and blogger Wael Abbas told the Weekly.

The law has also been condemned by the international human-rights group Amnesty International, which said that the new law placed broad restrictions on protests in Egypt. The law was a “serious setback” that posed a grave threat to freedom of assembly and gave the security forces free reign to use excessive force, including lethal force, against demonstrators, it said.

Human Rights Watch, an international NGO, also said that the new law gave the police a free hand to “attack protesters” and “carte blanche” to ban protests in Egypt.

For Al-Sayed, there is a tremendous legacy of distrust between the civil revolutionary forces and the security forces. “Due to this distrust, activists and revolutionary groups object to the idea of getting prior approval for demonstrations from the police,” he said.

Abbas said that the proper role of the police was to protect and serve citizens, but in Egypt the police were oppressive and subservient to the will of the regime.

“This was clear during the rule of the two former presidents Mubarak and [Mohamed] Morsi. Despite the two revolutions of 25 January and 30 June , the Ministry of the Interior has not conducted any real purges. Police officers accused of killing peaceful demonstrators in 2011 and 2012 have not been held accountable. On the contrary, they have been acquitted in nearly all cases,” Abbas said.

Ahmed Fouad Negm

The death of Egypt’s iconic slang poet, Ahmed Fouad Negm, 84, on Tuesday morning marks not just the passing of a man, but a phenomenon in the genre of political poetry, a field he dominated for over four decades. Along the way, he gave voice to his country and the working class.

His funeral at Cairo's historic Al-Hussein Mosque was attended by family members as well as hundreds of fans, including eminent leftist political figures such as Hamdeen Sabbahi and Khaled Ali, candidates in the 2012 presidential elections, and Mohamed Abul-Ghar, head of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party.

The author of famous poems like The Brave Man is Brave, Negm, known to his followers as Al-Fogammi, seemed to embody the Egyptian protest spirit from the early 1970s until the moment of his death. Just as he never strayed very far from Egypt's political and economic concerns, he also never avoided controversy, which he encouraged with both his poems and statements about religion.

A sharp-tongued poet, his bold statements against political and cultural figures made him plenty of enemies and often landed him in jail – most notably an 11-year-stint in prison for mocking the television addresses of President Anwar Sadat.

Negm said that he never felt old or wrote like an old man. Last year, in a statement to Al-Jazeera English, he claimed, "I still write like I'm 25, eat like I'm 25, and please a woman like I'm 25."

Two months before his death, he received the prestigious Prince Klaus Award from Denmark, in recognition for his poetic contributions that inspired three generations of Egyptian and Arab youth. In his poems, Negm merged social and political anger with the cynicism and sourness of the oppressed working class.

Negm was born in rural Sharqiya in 1929, one of 17 other boys in the family. Conditions in his village were harsh – six of his brothers died. After the death of his father, he moved to Zagazig to live with his uncle. Shortly afterwards he was placed in an orphanage, where, in 1936, he met the iconic Egyptian singer Abdel-Halim Hafez.

Ahmed Fouad Negm first began writing in the 1950s after he had been jailed under false accusations of counterfeiting. He was still in prison when his first collection of poetry was published, Pictures of Life in Prison, which was instantly heralded as the voice of a new poetic talent. The book would go on to win first prize in a poetry competition organised by the Egyptian council of arts.

In 1962, Negm met the famous musician and composer Sheikh Imam Eissa. Over the following years, they become the most successful duo of the time, with Eissa singing his poetry. At first the songs were romantic, but after the 1967 war with Israel, the lyrics became political. The authorities soon took notice, giving both of them a life sentence in prison.

President Sadat referred to Negm as "the abusive poet."

Ahmed Fouad Negm continued his political struggles, however, by opposing President Hosni Mubarak over the years. He was also against President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood.

He remained at the heart of Egypt’s political scene until the very end of his life. Speaking at a poetry gathering in Amman, Jordan, just three days before his death, Ahmed Fouad Negm proclaimed the 30 June anti-Mohamed Morsi protests to be the start of a new revolutionary wave. However, he rejected the idea of General Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi running for president.

CAIRO: Bassem Youssef stated that the authorities had no hand in stopping his show on CBC, in an interview with Yusri Fouda on ONTV on Wednesday.

Bassem Youssef stated that he does believe that the Egyptian authorities had no hand in stopping his show, pointing out that his fans and opponents used to watch El Bernameg during the Muslim Brotherhood‘s time in power.
Bassem Youssef rejected the statement issued by CBC, noting that a show has never been stopped ten minutes before it was scheduled to be broadcast. He considered it a personal insult, making it very difficult for the show to return to the channel.

Bassem Youssef pointed out that he is waiting to be called by the Public Prosecution for investigations into the accusations against him, considering this to be an insult to both the people and judiciary. He stated, “These investigations are a great embarrassment, I had hoped that they would not be subjected to this position.”
