EISA Nordics Shine at EC Craftsbury Openers

Back-to-back wins for Dartmouth's Sophie Caldwell and a total of 19 top-10 results for EISA skiers at the Eastern Cup openers at Craftsbury this weekend kicked nordic skiing off on a positive foot in the otherwise snow-troubled East. UVM's Alex Howe found his way to the podium twice, and he was joined in the top 10 by Middlebury's Doug Debold and Patrick Johnson and by Bates' Nick Muchaud. But the EISA women were the real showstoppers! Caldwell was in good company in the top 10 with her Dartmouth teammates Steph Crocker and Carly Wynn, Middlebury's Heather Mooney and Annie Pokorny, UVM's Anja Gruber and Lucy LeGarrec, and UNH's Elizabeth Guiney. In between all-nighter cram sessions for finals and pounding caffeine in a last-ditch effort to boost team GPAs for the fall term, EISA alpine athletes are also in the hunt for snow back on their home coast this weekend. It's a lot like Midway's SpyHunter for NES, but with more ammunition and bigger oil slicks.

Bates is leading the charge with nearby Sunday River boasting 11 trails, 3 lifts, and 66 acres of open skiing. But when the resort's 'Photo of the Day' is still a solitary snow gun in December, it's time to do a serious dance.

Dartmouth is also braving the guns at Killington, but they'll have to do some creative maneuvering around the general public and advanced scavenger hunting to find all 18 open trails to which the mountain report lays claim. Do you think this counts as a run?

Middlebury is staying optimistic despite the less than ideal coverage under the lift at Killington. Rock skis, anyone?

Aylin Woodward (Dartmouth '15) wins this week's Gettin' After It Award for her up close and personal with a GS panel during training at Loveland. Apple's FaceTime App has got nothing on this woman.

Bates Rips Pow, Nordies Hit West Yellowstone

If you were in Colorado last week wondering where the Bates Alpine Team was, they were busy ripping classic Mammoth pow and sneaking in training sessions under bluebird skies. Cal-i-for-ni-a.

As for the Nordies, most teams made their way to West Yellowstone, MT for training and early season races. Great shots of the Middlebury gang on their blog.

VARA Honors EISA Athletes

At the 2011 Celebration of Vermont Ski Racing Gala, numerous EISA alpine athletes were honored for their contributions to the sport in the state of Vermont. Tim Kelley (UVM) was acknowledged as the Collegiate Skier of the Year. Kara Shaw (Middlebury) and Robert Cone (Middlebury/USST) were each awarded the VARA Leadership Award while Katie Fitzpatrick (Bates) was named to the 2012 VARA Team.
