Dino Hunt: Dig and Discover

In the virtual world of eKidna; you can do things, you can only dream about. Sign up for Dino Hunt; explore our Australian-themed virtual world and search for ancient Dinosaur bones! Dr. Ducky, stationed at the outback will give you the supplies you need. He will also give you instructions how to carry on the mission. The goal is to gather all the bones of the dinosaur Leaellynasaura before the time is up. The bones are scattered all over eKidnaworld, so look and dig fast.

The Leaellynasaura existed during the early Cretaceous period. This is the period after Jurassic and was about 140 to 60 million years ago. It was discovered in Dinosaur Cove located in Victoria, Australia. Leaellynasaura means Leaellyn’s lizard. It is named after Leaellyn Rich, her parents discovered the bones and named it after her. It had been her wish to have a dinosaur and it came true! Her brother also got one, so he didn’t became jealous. Cool, right?

Leaellynasaura have big eyes. Their brain also has enlarged optic lobes. These unique features made it possible for them to see in the dark. Victoria was still part of the Antarctic Circle during that time and it can be really dark during winter, so it’s a good thing they have really big eyes. They also have a really long tail. It is three times as long as the rest of the body. Leaellynasaura stands up to 2 meters and they weigh about 10 kilograms, they probably weigh as much as a small deer. It is just a little dinosaur and likes to eat plants. Leaellynasaura became extinct because it ran out of food. Plants became limited at that time.

Leaellynasaura is just one of the other dinosaurs discovered in Australia.

The First Spike BMX Tourney

eKidnaworld just held the very first Spike BMX Tournament! Everyone gathered at the Rainforest with anticipation, excitement was in the air. Spike divided the players into groups, while a moderator facilitated the race. With their helmets ready; the bikers rode through the woods and swiftly jumped over the obstacles. After the dust settled, a winner emerged. Olivia12345, a young kangaroo, is the First Spike BMX Campion. Runners up are Grover, a goanna and Mowmow, a platypus.

Netiquette: How to Behave Online

As in real life, we need to be in our best behavior while living in our virtual world. A Netiquette is a guide on proper manners and behavior online. This can help us with dealing with other people online, so that we can avoid doing things that may anger or offend them. Here are some of them:

Remember the Golden Rule. Do unto others, what you would want others to do unto you. Be respectful and courteous at all times, to everyone.

The written word is hard to interpret. We cannot hear the tone of voice or see facial expression that will help us understand what is said. Use Smileys to help you convey what you mean.

Don’t type in everything in CAPITAL LETTERS. It will look like you are shouting and will irritate a lot of people.

If you lose a game, just congratulate the winner and be gracious. Even if you feel bad, don’t use rude or curse words. Bad words are no-no even in real life.

Be helpful and patient to newbies. Newbies to the game have a lot of questions and doesn’t always know what to do; we should assist and be friends with them because we used to be newbies too.

Respect privacy. Some kids are not permitted by their parents to share their age, location or real name; it is for their safety so we just have to respect that. If some kids don’t want to be mates with you, it’s ok, there are a lot of eKidna members you can be friends with. Ask permission first before you visit a mate’s shack and you should excuse yourself if they want to be alone in their home.

These are just basic netiquettes to follow as you explore our Australian-themed virtual world. If you are in a situation and don’t know the proper behavior should be, just always keep in mind the golden rule. Remember, you will have more fun playing if you are nice to your co-players. G’day Journal! I am so stoked today. I can’t stop raving about the new eKidnaworld home page design. I keep asking my friends if they have seen it or not. It looks so cool. It is more colorful and alive than the old one. It also features the different landmarks in eKidnaworld. Tree top houses really have such a nice view. You can see everything from there! That is one of the reasons why I like visiting my friends in the rainforest.

I also hear someone is coming to eKidnaworld. Someone that would have a very important role in our community. Who could it be? No matter, I am always glad to meet new friends. Everyone is welcome on eKidnaworld. I just hope this new mate will be nice and fun. Hmm, I hope he or she won’t beat me at surfing. I going to catch some waves.

Cyber-Bullying: What is it? What to do?

eKidnaworld is committed to make the internet a safer place for our kids. As we make our virtual world as secure as possible, we also want to inform you, dear parents, of internet hazards that kids face. One such danger is Cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is a harassment that occurs through the internet. It has many forms like sending hurtful or threatening messages via email, chatroom or instant messaging posting embarrassing pictures or messages; spreading false rumors; posting as the victim and giving out information about them. There are a lot more ways because Cyber-bullying is only limited by a kid’s imagination and technical know-how. Note that cyber-bullying only involves kids, if an adult is bullying a kid via internet, it is already termed as cyber-harassment or cyber-stalking.

Cyber-bullying can be worse than regular bullying in a number of ways. Cyber-bullying is done anonymously. The victim doesn’t know who is attacking them because cyber bullies always use screen names. While bullying is common in school or playgrounds, cyber-bullies can torment you kids even in the safety of your own home, no matter what the time is. The bullying can also be seen by other people, all over the internet, multiplying the embarrassment and harm.

Like with real life bullying, there are ways to recognize if your kid is being cyber-bullied. Take note of your child’s mood or behavior. Check if there is a change in sleeping or eating habits. Is he/she more moody? Look for uncharacteristic reaction while he/she is online. Is there a change on the amount of internet usage? Does your kid quickly clear the screen whenever someone walks by? Talk to your kid about his/her internet use, if they refuse then there must be something wrong. Also observe if your kid fears to go to school or avoid participating in school activities. A dip in their grades is also a sign of trouble.

What to do:

Once you know that your child is being victimized online, do not over react. Keep your calm, so your kid will not be more terrified.
Ask the bully to stop, otherwise do not engage in any other way.
Save proof of cyber-bullying. Use the PrtScn button, save every emails and chat archive.
Make changes on your security options. Ban/block/ignore the offender.
Report cyber-bullying to the moderators of the site.
Inform your child’s situation to the guidance counselor or pediatrician to assist you in helping your child.
If things are really out of hand, report it to the authorities. Cyber-bullying is a punishable crime.

Much of the internet is still unexplored. No matter how awesome it is, dangers lurk everywhere. It is up to you parents how to safeguard your child. Here in eKidnaworld, we try our best to make our virtual world, safe and fun for kids.

I woke up really early today, excited to look after everything in eKidnaworld. Being Mayor is hardwork, I have to make sure all is well and everyone is having fun, but it also very fulfilling. What makes it more thrilling are these especially-made, custom tailor Mayor’s clothes I get to wear. A lot of the kids are asking where I got this so they can get one too but I just tell them “No, no. These are mayor’s clothes, only the Mayor of eKidnaworld can wear this. Perhaps if you become a mayor you can wear this dashing suit.” Then they ask me how they can be a mayor, ahh these little kiddies, they never run out of questions. So I told them that they have to grow up first and be friends with everyone in eKidnaworld. They have to be nice and helpful to all. No bullies will ever be Mayor of eKidnaworld.

Anyway, really interesting stuff are happening around here. I have commisioned that events shall be held all over eKidnaworld so that everyone will get acquainted with each other. The kids sure love it. Not only do they get a chance to win gold nuggets but they become more familiar with eKidnaworld as well. I am also cooking up a big event for this week. We will hold eKidnaworld’s first BMX Bash Tourney! I am so giddy with excitement. I hope all of you are ready to race through the rain forest and win some gold nuggets!

How can Parents Log In on eKidnaworld

eKidnaworld is a staunch advocate of internet safety! We want a site where kids can enjoy and parents can trust so with this in mind, eKidnaworld has a special log in page for parents so that they can monitor their child’s account. It is so easy to do:

Upon receiving the confirmation email to verify your child’s eKidnaworld account, it will also include the user name and password for the parent’s account. Don’t share this with your kid!
Register a Parent's Account. You can also opt to be part of the eKidna Newsletter, where you will be the first to know every new updates about eKidnaworld.
Wait for an email to verify the Parent’s account.
Upon verification, you can now go to the Parent’s log in area. This is where you can manage your child’s account, upgrade it to a premium account, change chat options and activate or deactivate the Mate Safety™ feature. If the Mate Safety feature is on, your kid will need your permission before he can add a mate. A dialogue box will appear asking for the parent's password so he can add a buddy.
You will receive a Mate Notification email whenever your kid add a friend in his buddylist.

Internet Safety Tips for Kids

In eKidnaworld, the safety of the residents of our virtual world is very important to us. We make sure that everything in our site is appropriate for kids. We are also very proud of our Mate Safety™ feature to keep online chatting secured as well as keeping parents in the loop of who are their kid’s buddies online. Why is internet safety important to us? It is very simple really; being safe allows us to enjoy the game more!

So to make sure everyone will have a good time, let me share some internet safety tips for you guys:

Don’t use your real name as your user name. Keep your identity protected, don’t also give out personal information such as age, location or phone numbers. These information are not necessary to enjoy the game, so there is no need to give them out.
Do not share your password to your friends, but make sure your parents know what it is. We use passwords to keep your account secure, so don’t tell it to anyone online. If someone is asking for your password, they are only after your gold nuggets. However, you should tell your parents or guardian what it is so they can help you if you encounter any trouble. You trust them with your gold nuggets right?
Be nice. Treat everyone as you would want to be treated. eKidnaworld is a place for fun, amusement and making friends. Bad manners are frowned upon here.
Choose your friends carefully. Your buddies can see whenever you go online, they can also enter your house and send you private messages, so be sure you can trust them! Notify your parents too if you made new friends.
If someone said something rude or mean; press the print screen button on your keyboard, then report it to the game moderators. Send along with your image as evidence. They will gladly help you.
Always remember, if anything is making you feel uncomfortable, immediately tell your parents about it.

Whew! What a busy week in our virtual world. There are a lot of new friends coming over to eKidnaworld and I am so excited to welcome them all! I hang around the city to greet the new comers and make them feel at home. It was so heart-warming to see them make friends and go on play games together. Everyone is so nice and friendly. I hope they would always be like that.

Dan the Wombat is also busy making sales at his store. With their hard earned gold nuggets, my new friends troop to the furniture shop to buy new stuff for their shack. I heard Dan says the speckled bean bag is a hit! I surely love relaxing on it after a long day. This shopping spree got me thinking; maybe I should redecorate my home. Hmmm, it looks so orderly and neat right now, with enough space to entertain all my new friends. That’s another great idea!!! A PARTY! It would be nice to have one. I should practice my dance moves…

As you know, eKidnaworld.com is an Australian-themed virtual world for kids. It uses Australian animals for its avatar and there are 10 adorable characters to choose from. They are all amazing but right now, let us focus our spotlight on the Kookaburra.

Kookaburras belong to the family of Kingfishers. They are large birds and can grow up to 17 inches in height! Moreover, their stout beaks can grow to four inches long. They are most famous for their very unique call that sounds a lot like a human laughter. It is actually one of the best-known sounds in the animal kingdom. Kookaburra’s crackling chorus at daybreak and twilight also earned it the nickname “bushman’s clock.” Try copying the sound of Kookaburra!

Laughing kookaburras are monogamous; they stick with their partner for the rest of their life. They are also territorial birds, which mean that they don’t like sharing their space to other animals. They like nesting in tree holes, high up in a very large tree. Females lay one to five eggs, usually during spring which are taken care of by the whole family, composed of parents and elder siblings. Do you help looking after your younger siblings too?

How to Help your Kid Deal with School Stress
