The film briefly tells the story of Jordan Belfort, a young man who begins working as a broker on Wall Street and founded his own company in a garage. The company was called Stratton Oakmont, where he discovered their large commercial and leadership skills.

In the film cite the " American Dream " as Jordan Belfort comes from a humble family. Lean Thinking

The lean thinking is a strategic process focused on reducing waste. This concept was developed by James Womack as he worked on the Toyota car company in the 80 's. Indeed "waste" are all those activities that don´t generate added value for the customer, trough observing and analysing the internal processes to obtain a product or service.

For example, a manufacturing company, waste activities are excess inventory , unnecessary transport number between processes, unnecessary delays, and reprocess. In the case of a service provider such as an insurance company. Waste is excessive waiting times in a row by users, reprocessing the loan applications, or excessive paperwork.

For a implementation of lean thinking practices, it is necessary to understand the concept of value chain. Value chains are defined by the end user of a product or service. And company must process data or raw materials to produce goods or services that customers expect at the end of the value chain.

To implement a project lean , vertical integration is required , ie , have the support of high management. In the implementation we must begin to identify the value chains of high and low level of the company through a person experienced in lean thinking. You can lay out a value chain for the fundamental process and other value chains to support processes .

The word Lean is not simply a concept that is fashionable or represents a temporary and inadequate solution. Lean Thinking shows a new way of thinking and managing companies , benefiting from the labor of the production line to the Director General.

The ultimate goal of lean thinking is to reduce waste. And is achieved by observing the activities that create value in the process and eliminating all other activities that not added value.

I read the Lean Thinking book by James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones for learn more, improve as engineer and see things more simple. Is a great book but we need applying lean thinking in the book, improve the methodology and cases, because some times is to much heavy to read.

"I don´t want to survive, I want to live". 12 Years a Slave.

This was one of the phrases that the protagonist Solomon Northup says in the film 12 Years A Slave.

The story of the film is set in the years before the Civil War in the United States, where Solomon Northup , a free black man living in New York , is kidnapped and sold into slavery . The protagonist must fight not only stay alive , but also to preserve its dignity against the cruelty of one of its masters. His hope is powered by gestures of kindness and the return the side of his family will not leave him along his odyssey of twelve years.

The Solomon opportunity to meet a Canadian abolitionist who thought differently to everyone, will change his life forever but must take risks. 12 Years a Slave, is a work of director Steve McQueen and based on the autobiography of Solomon Northup who shocked U.S. after its publication in 1853 , which tells the incredible true story of one man's struggle for survival and freedom.

This movie should be used to learn lessons and from life. Especially because the protagonist, conveys how it looked and felt slavery from within and with a lot of empathy. Besides showing the continued and unwavering struggle, to back to being a free man and return home with his family.

Lessons that delivery the film:

Never give up.
Although some people says you can not achieve something, you have to try and fight for this.
Taking risks and failing is better than not having attempted.
The struggle to achieve a goal must be constant.
When there is a clear goal, it is easier to move though you don´t see the way.

China factories still gathering pace in March

Chinese manufacturers saw further improvement in March for business conditions after nearly leveling off in February, according to data by HSBC. The manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for March came in at 51.7, improving from a final reading of 50.4 for February.

The latest data implied that the Chinese economy was still on track for a gradual growth recovery. The inflation remains well behaved, leaving room for Beijing to keep policy relatively accommodative in a bid to sustain growth recovery and inject money in the market.

The PMI figure in the March could help ease market worries about a weaker-than-expected recovery, said BofA Merrill Lynch economist.

Other indicators such as daily power output suggest that March manufacturing activities remain relatively weak, and Street economists will likely cut their [first-quarter economic] growth forecasts.

HSBC’s preliminary PMI data are based on responses from 85% to 90% of the respondents to their monthly survey of manufacturers, with the final version of the report due out April 1.

Assuming something is to place a wall to Innovation

The other day when I was doing a survey on the idea to develop and features would you like for an education platform, one of the people gave me the following answer that I want to share with you:

Q: To You guys would like a platform for continuing education on various topics ...?

A: Javier, all people are going to say that yes.... (blah blah blah and more blah blah) ... the platform will not work.

But I take the answer to show the tendency of assuming things. In this case, "everyone would answer yes." And I remember when some companies or startups create innovative product features as they "assume or think" that this new feature is what the customer needs. But when it is presented to the customer is hit with a wall because he does not want.

But the types of failures occur because many "innovators" handle much theory. Because you can study and read books with many theories, but if you can not validate those theories is not functional.

Time and Motion Study

Frederick W. Taylor is considered to as the father of the study of time in the United States. His work in the time study began in 1881 when he worked at the Midvale Steel Company.

In 1893 developed a system based on the concept of "task", in which he proposed that the management of a company should plan the work of each employee and that every man should receive instructions in writing with details of the task and will also indicate the means or tools to be used to effect it. Each job should have a standard time limit, after they had performed the necessary time studies by experts, in the process of standardization of time, Taylor performed the division of labor allocation in small parts called elements.

Those were the words of my father when we talked how obtain a product to certain business model. And without he knew the process of Customer Development and The Lean Startup, he gave me a practical meaning on the process of validation of the Customer and Pivot.

The Lean Startup Methodology is from the author Eric Ries, and allows increase the likelihood of success in setting up a business, or launching a product or service.

According to Eric Ries a startup is a human institution designed to create new products and services under conditions of extreme uncertainty.

However, the main novelty of these techniques is that, given an extremely uncertain environment, it is necessary to measure the results of each experiment and back, or to pivot (if the results are positive) or persevere (if the results are on track).

Pareto Principle to Representativeness in the Policy

When you start to review and analyze different cases, one learns that most things in life are not equally divided. And based on the story for analysis, I go back to 1906, where the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto design a mathematical formula describing the distribution of wealth in his country.

The mathematical formula said that 20% of persons had 80% of the wealth. And also found that 20% of the pods of peas produced 80% of peas in your garden. This unequal distribution appears to be a "natural law" and no arguments that validate only observe its unusual appearance in a lot of situations.

This rule applies to a surprising number of situations and cases. And it applies like that 20% generates about 80% of the results and not exactly that percentage.

So for example if applied to political decisions, means that 80% of a country's political decisions are made for 20% of people.

According to what I found on the web as political decision: A product of the analysis of a political issue or that can have political solution, and a discussion of media, the political decision is a foreshadowing of the road ahead for the system to achieve its goal of a ruling on the allocation and will put into action the means to that end.

Political decisions are made in a staggered manner or sequential:

- First define general purposes or goals (policy decision).

- Second identifies the means and methods of execution (enforcement decision).

Political decisions are limited by the resources available to the system and the two environments in which it operates: the external environment, exogenous, the world around him, and the internal environment, endogenous, often ignored by decision makers, despite its great importance.

So applying the principle would mean that 252.480.000 million U.S. residents have no influence on policy decisions.

And in the case of Chile, would mean that approximately 13.300.000 million people have no political influence on decisions.

These are impressive numbers for that normal people can influence political decisions or not?.

The Pareto principle allows us to conclude that there are activities that bring us closer to the goals and there are others that we deviate from them.

Bernanke and his Stress Test

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a speech on Monday to the Atlanta Federal Reserve’s annual financial-market conference that : “U.S. banks are stronger than they were a few years ago, thanks in part to government stress tests. The resilience of the U.S. banking system has greatly improved since [2009], and the more intensive use and greater sophistication of supervisory stress testing ... deserve some credit for that improvement”.

In the first stress test, 10 of the 19 large bank holding companies were required to raise equity capital by a total of $75 billion. Only 2 of 18 banks failed the latest test, completed last month.

The stress test was designed to assess whether a bank’s reserves were adequate to withstand another crisis like the credit crunch of 2008. Banks have criticize the models as a “black box”. The Fed chairman said he was worried that revealing the model would cause banks to simply adopt that model instead of their own, making it easier to “pass” the stress test.

Bernanke said the stress tests can’t cover all risks banks might face. The decision to launch stress tests in 2009 was one of the “critical turning points in the financial crisis”.

And that despite complaints from the banks, the Fed would not publish the full specifications of its model used to estimate banks’ projected revenues and losses.

But this test show a Banks improved but in employment?. And the wage test?.

UEFA have pampered teams?

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund were classified to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League. The semifinal matchups will be drawn on Friday and will begin play on April 23.

According to historical data, three of the four semifinalists last season once again among the top four in Europe. The only one missing is the defending champion Chelsea.

On one hand, Barcelona was not a good night for the first 60 minutes of the game had a hard time generating game. Chances were clearer in the PSG players. Alibaba writes the history of e-commerce worldwide

When I heard for first time Alibaba.com I remembered that Ali Baba is a fictional character in the adventure tale of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", part of the Thousand and One Nights. But this Alibaba is a big money maker in China and now they want to spread around the world.

In the tale Ali Baba is a poor woodcutter of Arabia, overhears a bunch of thieves visiting their treasure's hiding place in the forest where cutting wood. The thieves treasure is in a cave whose mouth is sealed magically: it opens with the words "Open Sesame" and closes with "Close Sesame". When the thieves are gone, Ali Baba enters the cave and takes some of the treasure home.

This e-commerce giant has come to dominate internet retailing in China and come to stay. It has moved beyond its original remit of connecting businesses to each other to ventures.

And if we project the growth of Alibaba versus Facebook or other sites dot com, we can see that not are limits to growth.
