capacidad de la gasolina para evitar las detonaciones y explosiones en 
los motores de autos, camiones y motos.&lt;br /&gt;
La prueba de determinación
 del octanaje de la gasolina, se efectúa en un motor especial de un sólo
 cilindro, aumentando progresivamente la compresión hasta que se 
manifiestan las detonaciones.&lt;br /&gt;

Posteriormente, se hace funcionar el motor sin variar la compresión 
anterior, con una mezcla de iso-octano y una cantidad variable de 
n-heptano, que representará el octanaje o índice de octano de la 
gasolina para la cual se procedió a la prueba y que tiene, por lo tanto,
 el mismo funcionamiento antidetonante de la mezcla de hidrocarburos. 
Así, por ejemplo, si una gasolina presenta propiedades antidetonantes 
similares a una mezcla de 95% de iso-octano y 5% de n-heptano, se dice 
que tiene un número de octano de 95.&lt;br /&gt;

Los principales problemas al usar gasolinas de bajo numero de octanos 
son la generación de detonaciones o explosiones en el interior de los 
motores de combustión, aparejado esto con un mal funcionamiento y bajo 
rendimiento del combustible, cuando el vehículo está en movimiento, 
aunado a una elevada emisión de contaminantes.&lt;br /&gt;    &lt;br /&gt;    A nivel 
mundial, se han desarrollado varias tecnologías relacionadas entre sí 
para elevar el octanaje de las gasolinas, destacando las siguientes: 
Aplicación de nuevas tecnologías de refinación, de reformado catalítico,
 isomerización y otros procesos, que permiten obtener gasolinas con 
elevados números de octano limpios, es decir, sin aditivos.&lt;br /&gt;
