For those of us that live in dryer climates, or colder climates where the heat is on high indoors, winter can mean uncomfortable skin. Here is a helpful tip to minimize discomfort and shine in the cold!

-Don't take hot showers. I know that everyone says this, but when you are coming inside from temperatures of 1 degree (yes, that is an actual temperature), how great does it feel to heat up in a steamy shower? While not the best option for your skin, here is how you can make it work. Steam dries out your skin, as steam is a higher temperature, and high temps evaporate moisture. However, steam also opens pores, why else would they use it during facials?

So, use this to your advantage and apply toners, serums, and moisturizers right when you get out of the shower, while pores are still open and can absorb all the lovely nutrients and moisturizers you put on your skin.
Our new products will be available soon with new ingredients and new packaging.
As the new year begins, we have a few exciting changes in store for our students and our clients. They will be unveiled as the time approaches, but first, we want to give everyone a sneak peak into our new product line. Still under the elaine sterling skincare name, our original products, and some new products will be hitting our shelves *hopefully* February or March. As research emerges about the effectiveness of new ingredients, and the potential harm other ingredients pose, we must keep our inventory up to date to provide you with the most effective and safe products on the market. With this in mind, we will be introducing a new Chemical Free SPF, and all of our products will be paraben free! We are incorporating more serums with powerful actives such as retinol and Hyaluronic acid, and intense but non-greasy moisturizers.
All of these new items in addition to our original line make for a multitude of different products under one umbrella, thus we revamped our packaging in a sleek new design for clarity and striking appearance. We don't want to give away too much more, but hope that this bit was enough to keep you wanting more.
In order to move towards a more technology driven learning environment that provides easily accessible information, ESI now offers webinars as part of our post-graduate program. This decision came after a realization that a large proportion of our demand for courses comes from individuals located outside of a comfortable commuting distance. This also allows us to lower students costs, as teachers can more easily schedule webinars at a time that is convenient for them, and students that cannot attend the live webinar will still have access to the recording. We also realize that many of the subjects and skills we will be covering have a global appeal. Our European Standards can be used in the esthetics environment worldwide.
A potential downside to this change is the lack of teacher student communication. To preserve this essential direct interaction between teachers and students, our live webinars will feature a question and answer session with the instructor to provide clarification and additional knowledge about the topic. Our webinars have potential value to a far reaching net of professionals from small business spa, hotel spas, medical spas, any esthetic or professional cosmetic career, etc. Topics will range from machine information and demonstration to basic esthetic fundamentals. To encourage career growth and development of the esthetic community, we will also feature webinars on spa businesses and professionalism.
We also expect the small investment cost to act as an incentive for spas and medical esthetic facilities to enroll many students in the webinars, to retrain and reinforce esthetic foundations and principles. We are genuinely excited about this new venture and will post through our social media outlets and have information on our website regarding pricing and enrollment times.
Welcome back to our second installment of our September series all about simple changes you can make to your routine to greatly improve your skin. This week, our focus is on skincare outside the home.
What should you do? Get a facial! While this may seem again like obvious advice, people underestimate the knowledge a professional can provide. When I analyze individuals under the woods lamp, I first ask them what they would like to change about their skin. Often the problems that they want to fix, are caused by their own improper skincare routine. When individuals tell me that they have oily skin, often times their skin is overproducing oil in response to initial drying and stripping of the skin. However, if they did not seek professional advice, the might overuse clarifying products, thus further drying and sensitizing their skin. This is just one example of many times our students and instructors have educated mis-informed clients and illuminated the origin of client skin care problems.

The reason to address this issue is that I have noticed a trend across skincare websites that tout the mantra that all skincare should be home based. However, I like to compare esthetician work to that of a dentist. Just because you don’t have a toothache, doesn’t mean you don’t go for a cleaning. While you still brush your teeth at home, a deep cleaning ensures proper health of the teeth. Professionals such as hygienists and dentists can identify problems that you might not even notice. Going to an esthetician on a regular basis can work in the same fashion for your teeth, and seeing one on a regular basis can greatly improve the health of your skin.

So what do we mean by “regular”? This term is relative and differs for each person. For me, I try to get in some type of intense treatment at least 1-2 times a month, but we do have some devout followers who visit on a weekly (sometimes more) basis.
If the idea of getting a facial seems to outlandish, I recommend that you try it at least once, as many people are not even aware of what occurs during a facial. It is a great way to seek professional advice about your skin and receive some pampering.

High Tech for High Class Students

The digital age has outgrown its homey roots. No longer are tablets and media devices simply for the casual user. Business and educational facilities everywhere continue to find inventive and effective ways to incorporate technology into their infrastructure. ESI has jumped on this bandwagon, or should we say, is steering the wagon itself. For a school of roughly 150 students, they are taking big leaps in the classroom. The newest class of students will be the first to enter school with a tablet as the primary learning device. Tests, training modules, instructional videos, can now be easily viewed on each student’s tablet, as the cost is covered in their tuition.

The tablet provides a myriad of possibilities for the students, well beyond their time at ESI. The educators at ESI encourage and instruct students how to start their own blog, film and upload their own instructional videos, and create an online presence before they even enter their professional careers. Asha Sterling, creative director at ESI says that the tablets, “Pushes students to engage with the online beauty community”. With courses on technology and assistance with downloading apps the tablets, “students no longer have an excuse for not connecting online, they have to do it everyday”. It also creates a more helpful student environment as the tablets provide a medium for students to “connect and help one another” with possible problems that may occur.

Here is what our founder, Elaine Sterling, has to say about her tech philosophy: "We are living in the digital age. I would never have thought when I open my

school that in just a few short everyone would be connected to the internet,

social media and the world via tablets, phones and soon to come devices

like drones and google glass. Technology changed the way we do business

how we connect with prospective student and how incorporate a dynamic

way of educating our students in the traditional classroom setting.

The Elaine Sterling Institute is a traditional clock hour post-secondary

school therefore for our undergraduate programs we do not offer online

classes however we can offer their books, library and a media center in a

virtual space. They can use the online e-learning space in the classroom

and as reference -study guide when they are at home.

The students are bringing their digital devices to school anyway and for

the new generation not allowing these phones and tablets in the classroom

is like removing one of their arms. They do not know life without them so

why not embrace technology and use it for the greater good.

I also wanted to be more socially and environmentally responsible as far

as the amount of paper we are using on a daily basis. Going “paperless”

makes me feel like we are playing a small part in helping the world we live

in.

Our many online educational formats include Course mate, ITEC e-
learning, Elaine Sterling e-portal. All our books, practice tests, games,

flash cards, videos, and reference materials are housed online on various

portals. The students take their tests online while they are sitting in the

classroom. The instructors log them in and select the examination for them.

This allows the student to receive their grade immediately thus “ NO LOST

TESTS” is a problem for any school.

We are connecting and learning on a whole new level and I am excited

about being part of this new digital age.

The Elaine Sterling Institute believes in dynamic learning and we are

committed to be on the cutting edge of the spa industry. The digital age is

moving fast and we plan to be right there with it."

Moisture: What it is and why you need it
The sebaceous glands, or oil producing glands, in the skin typically create a healthy layer of oil to guard the skin from debris, retain water, and give the skin its suppleness. This combination of water retention and oil is what makes up the skin’s moisture. Problems arise when the sebaceous glands produce too much oil (oily skin) or not enough (dry skin).
Hydration specifically refers to the amount of water retention in the skin. Too little hydration and your skin can lose its elasticity. During the summer time, when the air is more humid, oily skin tends to become a more common problem. However, with a few simple tips, your skin can flourish in the summer.

Cleanse your face twice a day, and tone it. Soap changes the ph of your skin, and toner restores this delicate balance. Throwing off your pH levels can cause everything from wrinkles to acne. Toner allows the closure of clean pores and maintains your skin’s acid mantle, with a pH level of about 5.5. For those that experience excessive oil production in the summer, try our clarifying toner.

After cleansing, be sure to moisturize even during summer months. Many people don’t moisturize as they feel their skin is too oily. However, under moisturizing can cause the skin to over produce oil, leading to a vicious cycle of oily under moisturized skin. After you wash your face, apply a light moisturizer. Our Oil Control complex works as a great way to provide your skin with hydration and moisture, while still maintaining the skin’s healthy oil production.
Here is a helpful spray tanning tip for this spring. Most of us work 40 hour a week jobs and it takes a bit longer for us to achieve that sun kissed look. If you are smart about your skin (or have read our previous articles about tanning beds) you won’t expose yourself to unnecessary UV rays. If you just can’t wait to show off your skin, why not try a spray tan? There are many spray tan options that won’t leave you with the infamous jack-o-lantern glow.
For those who are used to the streaky look accompanied by some spray tanning procedures, here is a tip to help you get a more even look. Before your spray tan, use a gentle exfoliating scrub all over the body. This evens the skin surface, helps minimize excess hair, and gives you a more radiant appearance upon completion of the procedure.
Many people experience dry flaky skin during winter. The dry air and cold temperatures can give skin a raw feeling. This rawness can make exfoliate seem like an impossibility. However, neglecting exfoliation in the transition months between winter and spring can mean dull flaky skin in springtime. Exfoliation removes the outer layer of dead skin cells to reveal the fresh new skin underneath. However, with exfoliation comes the need for moisture. It is easy to forget to moisturize during spring when the air is a bit more humid and warmer, but it is still just as important. Insufficient moisturizing of skin can lead to over production of oil. When you moisturize your skin with moisturizer instead of your own oil it allows for penetration of vital added nutrients, hydration (added water) and less chance for the development of acne.

Our suggestion: Vita C Microexfoliant, and a nighttime moisturizer such as Brighten me or nightly renewal

Treatment: Our Spring a Peel Special.

This cutting edge treatment brings a whole new meaning to the dreaded word "Lipo"
Laser Lipo is a body contouring treatment that relies on laser frequency to melt fat cells in the body. Laser lipo works by releasing the stored fat cells into the body, and they are then taken up by the lymphatic system. The laser frequencies weaken the cell membrane and allow for selective permeability of triglycerides. These triglycerides spill into the interstitial space and are drawn into the bodies normal metabolic systems. Thus, it is usually suggested that the client undergo intense exercise after the treatment to aid in the body's metabolization of the excess fat.

Laser lipo is recommended for individuals that are close to their target weight and just want to get rid of stubborn areas. Common areas treated are the stomach, thighs, and upper arms. Laser lipo can produce results after one treatment, but the treatment is most effective after 6-10 treatments.

Here are the following contraindications for this service:

Peptides are a popular active ingredient in many high end skincare lines. Peptides are chains of amino acids, but doesn’t that sound a lot like a protein? Actually, peptides and proteins are basically the same macro molecules. In technical terms, peptides are usually less than 50 amino acids long, and proteins are greater than 50 amino acids. In our nightly renewal, we pack it full of peptides to increase collagen production. The peptide featured in our Nightly Renewal is Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17.

Peptides are most commonly used in anti-aging products and are touted as being able to boost collagen production. When collagen degrades, it breaks down into its counterpart peptides. The presence of these peptides acts as signal to produce more collagen. Adding peptides to the skin can help increase the signals that would in turn create more collagen. Also, because of their relatively small size, peptides sink through the layers of the skin more easily.

Exfoliation, like most things in life, is best done in moderation. Exfoliation is sometimes misunderstood. People do it too much, or not enough, and you end up with a red irritated face or skin that looks dull. Exfoliation, in skincare terms, simply means removing the outer layer of dead skin cells. This reveals the glowing skin underneath and allows for quicker and easier penetration of nutrients into the deeper layers of the skin.
Exfoliation can work wonders for your skin, but should not be done everyday. Mechanical and chemical exfoliation are both effective methods, but if done too often can over-sensitize the skin.

Exfoliation can allow the skin to access the vital nutrients in your cleansing and moisturizing routines, and incorporating this one simple step into your skincare regimen can mean the difference between flaky dullness and brightness.
Wondering how often to exfoliate? Get a skin analysis during your next treatment and your esthetician can inform you about the best exfoliation habits for your skin.
Try our Vita C Micro-exfoliant for excellent mechanical and chemical exfoliation.

Staying hydrated is important to the health of your body, and your skin. Your skin suffers when you don’t get enough water, especially in winter months when the air inside and out is dry. A lack of water inhibits the skin from performing its important functions. The skin works as a barrier between you and the surrounding environment. When the skin is dry, the cells shrink up and can flake off more easily, weakening the barrier. Some experts say that dehydration can also promote wrinkles as dehydrated skin cannot hold its shape as well.

You can stay hydrated by increasing your water intake and applying a topical moisturizer. Some Dermatologists argue that drinking water won’t help your skin, as your vital organs are the first to receive ingested water. Not many clinical studies have been conducted examining water and skin, as water cannot be patented so funding for such studies is scarce. However, many people have personally attested to the wonders water can do for the skin as evident in blogs and news articles. If drinking the recommended 8 cups a day of water still doesn’t cut it for your skin, adding a hydrating topical moisturizer can help keep your skin soft and dewey. Getting enough water has a variety of other health benefits that go far beyond skin, so if you don’t do it for your skin, do it for yourself!

Our recommended product: total everyday hydration

Our recommended treatment: Hydrating facial

When it comes to your skin, the sun is not always your friend. A common misconception is that you don’t have to wear sunscreen in the wintertime. Most people reserve sunscreen for those bright summer days outdoors, while the rest of the year, the bottle sits unused collecting dust. In 2014, we are asking you to dust of those bottles and slather the screen on 365 days a year.

Although you may not risk sunburn in the winter and early spring months, you still will be exposed to harmful rays that can lead to wrinkles, discoloration, and, in some cases, skin cancer. This doesn’t mean that you need to break out the thick sunblock for your face, but a light moisturizer with a smaller SPF will suffice. For those that like a bit of tint, try our skin smoothing SPF, which acts as a makeup primer as well. If you prefer a color free option, try our Everyday SPF.
As much as we have tried to hammer this into everyone’e minds, some people still do not make a habit of washing their face. Most people in the working world take showers as part of their daily routine. Cleaning your body is important, so why would you neglect your face? If anything, the skin on your face needs more specific attention than the skin on your limbs. Our face is our primary area of communication, and everyone should always put their best face forward. One way to ensure clear and fresh skin is simply by cleansing. Without keeping your skin clear of irritants, pollutants, bacteria, dirt, and oil any other steps you take to protect your skin become virtually worthless. The analogy I like to use is that of a dirty plate. You can cover your plate with as much delicious food as you can imagine, but if eaten off of a dirty plate, the delicious food would be unappetizing to say the least. Your skin is like the plate, in order for it to respond to any products such as moisturizers and creams, it needs to be initially cleaned.

If you are one of the millions of us who just can’t squeeze 10 minutes into our already fragile schedules, try just 5 minutes! If you can’t find the time twice a day to wash your skin, at least wash it at night. During the day, you accumulate all of the nasties that wreak havoc on your skin, and washing it at night gets it off before you have time to further embed these unwanted particles into your skin when you sleep on your pillow. This simple habit can work wonders on anyone with problem skin. If you do nothing else for your skin, make sure you wash it (and wear sunscreen, but more on that later).

Our recommendations:

Daily gentle cleanser: All skin types

Mild Cream cleanser: dehydrated and sensitive skin

Clarifying skin wash: oily skin

Don't know your skin type? Stop by for a European Facial that includes a skin analysis to identify problems with your skin.

Need some more help? Here is a great tutorial on How to wash your face.

What is it? A European facial is our standard facial, and it is the number one treatment for new clients. During this treatment you receive a thorough cleansing, steam machines, skin analysis, extraction (if needed) exfoliation, a masque, and a decollete massage. The cleansing and exfoliation routine is crucial to your skin in and outside the spa, and it is a great way to learn about exfoliation if new to the idea.

Why do you need it? During a Euro Facial, our estheticians will analyze your skin for any problems, ask you questions about your skin, and view it under a magnifying lamp to examine your unique complexion. After your treatment, your esthetician will then recommend a home protocol to enhance your skin at home. A Euro facial is also a great way to maintain your skin in a basic, relaxing way.

What is it? Radio RF skin tightening works in a number of ways. Friction from the radio waves crashing into the collagen causes the collagen to lift up and firm as it shrinks. When collagen is more plentiful, the papillary dermis is more plump and elastic, giving you a tighter skin feel and a more youthful skin appearance. The entire process is completed without the use of anesthesia or surgery. This non invasive procedure allows clients to return to their daily activities immediately after treatment.

Why do you need it? RF skin tightening is a fast procedure that can have long lasting results. The most common areas of treatment are the legs, thighs, buttocks, arms, face, and neck. Multiple treatments are recommended for full and lasting results.

Who Shouldn’t get it? While radio frequency is generally safe for most people , check with your physician before scheduling an appointment. Once at the spa, our estheticians can help determine if you are a candidate for RF. Individuals with metal implants or pacemakers should not get RF. Certain skincare treatments have a waiting period before you can receive RF. Talk to your esthetician for more details.

Other Spas’ cost: $150-200/ area

Our Spa: $55/ area

What is it- A microdermabrasion is a treatment that helps remove the outer layer of dead skin cells. Traditionally microdermabrasions are performed with tiny crystals as an exfoliating medium. As new technology develops, a variety of options exist for individuals with sensitive skin such as diamond tip microderms or hydromicroderms, which use water. Removal of dead skin also allows for deeper penetration of topically applied nutrients and creams.

Why you need it- Exfoliation exposes the younger living skin cells to reveal a more radiant complexion. At home scrubs and masques are good for lighter exfoliation, but deeper exfoliation can only be achieved with spa equipment. The benefits of getting this treatment in a spa setting are that your esthetician knows just how far to go to limit any irritation, you will receive proper after care instructions, and you can address any current skincare issues.

Who shouldn’t get it- Individuals with diabetes, extremely sensitive skin, rosacea, bacterial infections, or who have received botox within the last 72 hours should not get a microderm. This is not a comprehensive list so be sure to discuss with your esthetician and your doctor if you have concerns about getting a microderm.

Other Spas cost- $100-150

Our Spa: $45

The video below shows a student using a crystal free microderm machine.
