The teacher, Mrs. Zootec, hears the noise and says, "Catro, sit down and be quiet", Catro sits down.

Personal letters are generally written to people who you know in your social or family life such as friends from school, pen pals or family members. Personal letters are great because you can be casual and conversational, writing in a talkative, chatty manner. You can even use slang or abbreviations.

Personal letters fall into a number of subcategories such as Apologies letter, Thank you letter, Personal reference letter, Congratulations letter, Invitations letter, and Condolences letter.

They differ from formal types in that they can be used to express personal feelings and depending on the relationship between the sender and receiver do not require formal concise language.

What goes in a personal letter?

News about school such as getting a part in the school play, joining a new club or team, winning a prize or sports competition – anything you can think of.

Updates about your family. For example getting a new pet, moving house, exciting news about your siblings or parents.

Special events such as birthdays, holidays or parties.

Something about yourself, such as hobbies, favorite things, jokes, games you have played or movies you have seen.

Questions about the person you are writing to. Ask if anything has changed in their life or what they are doing in the next week or month.

Congratulating the recipient on an accomplishment, award or special event such as an engagement, wedding or birth.

Personal letters are a way of sharing news and events in writing, but why not draw a nice picture or attach a photo to share with your friend?

Generic structure of personal letter

Conventions are not as critical as they are in a formal correspondence but the following general layout should be adhered to:

1. HEADING
Classroom language can be an invaluable way of promoting English as real communication, student involvement in the lesson, and active language learning skills. According to Doff, Teach English: A training course for teachers (1988),

most of the language we need for organizing the class consists of simple expressions which can be used again and again.

Getting everyone’s attention

Be quiet/Quiet down, please

Silent, please

Can I have your attention, please?

Could you all listen to me, please?

Would you pay attention, please?

Anto, are you with us?

Classroom language is a good beginning step for encouraging students to feel comfortable in a foreign language and for them to begin to “think” in that language. The goal is to get students to react in English, rather than in mother tongue. The more times they use English, the comfortable they will be. Here are some useful phrases you can encourage your students to say English

1. Permission

Can I come in? Can I go out?

Can I borrow _______________ ?

Can I change seats?

Can I go to the toilet/restroom

Can you repeat that, please?

Can you speak louder, please?

Can you speak more slowly, please?

Can I sharpen my pencil?

Can I go to the board?

Can I switch on/off the lights?

Can I open/close the window?

Can I pull down/up the blinds?

Can we pack our things now?

Can I do that exercise on the board, please?

I can’t see the board, can you step aside?

Can you play the CD again, please?

2. During the lesson

How do you say “__________” in English?

What does “ ___________” mean?

What is the meaning of “__________”?

When is the homework for?

Do we have to write this down?

How do you spell that word?

How do you pronounce this word?

Can you help me with this exercise?

Do we need to hand in the exercise?

What do we have to do now?

What page are we on?

Are you going to collect this exercise?

Can I do that exercise on the board, please!

Would you give us an example?

When is the homework due?

Can you explain a little bit more about that?

Would you repeat that?

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-client="ca-pub-6634603014591964" data-ad-slot="2545669562" style="display: inline-block; height: 250px; width: 300px;">
</ins>

3. Apologies

I am sorry I forgot my book/ notebook at home

I am sorry I wasn’t paying attention, can you repeat?

I am sorry to be late

The goal of an English teacher is to use as much of the target language as possible. One of the most frequent ways that language is used in the daily routines refers to classroom language. Here are useful phrases that are often used to end the lesson. Feel free to use these or other that you find.

1. Not time to stop

The bell hasn't gone yet.

There are still two minutes to go.

We still have a couple of minutes left.

The lesson doesn't finish till five past.

Your watch must be fast.

We seem to have finished early.

We have an extra five minutes.

Sit quietly until the bell goes.

2. Time to stop

It's almost time to stop.

I'm afraid it's time to finish now.

We'll have to stop here.

There's the bell. It's time to stop.

That's all for today. You can go now.

Okay children, It’s the end of the day!

The lesson is over for today.

We’ve run out of time.

3. Wait a minute

Hang on a moment.

Just hold on a moment.

Stay where you are for a moment.

Just a moment, please.

One more thing before you go.

Back to your places.

4. Next time

We'll do the rest of this chapter next time.

We'll finish this exercise next lesson.

We've run out of time, so we'll continue next lesson.

We'll continue this chapter next Monday.

5. Homework

This is your homework for tonight.

Do exercise 10 on page 23 for your homework.

Prepare the next chapter for Monday.

There is no homework today.

Remember your homework.

Take a worksheet as you leave.

Before next lesson, I want you to read the story on page 15

6. Goodbye

Goodbye, everyone.

See you again next Wednesday.

That’s all for now, see you Monday

See you tomorrow afternoon.

That’s all for today, enjoy the weekend

OK, you can put away your things. See you next week

Have you had a good day?

See you in language laboratory after the break.

Have a good holiday.

Enjoy your vacation.

7. Leaving the room

Try not to make any noise as you leave.

Be quiet as you leave. Other classes are still working.

It's tidy up time

Get into a queue.

Form a queue and wait for the bell.

Everybody outside!

All of you get outside now!

Hurry up and get out!

Classroom language is the routine language that is used on a regular basis in classroom. Knowing this language reduces the amount that students are forced to use their mother tongue and increases the amount of the target language they are using; it makes the language classroom environment more authentic.

1. Greeting

Good morning/afternoon, everybody.

Hello, everyone.

Hello there, Anggie.

How are you today?

How are you getting on?

How's life?

How are things with you?

Are you feeling better today, Santi?

How are you this morning, Susan?

Dany, how are you today?

Do you have a cold?

Question tags are short questions used at the end of a sentence. We form a question tag with an auxiliary verb and a pronoun

Functions and examples

1. We use tag questions to confirm information.

This meal is horrible, isn't it?

That film was fantastic, wasn't it?

2. We use tag questions when we are already sure of the answer and just want confirmation (falling intonation with the tag question).

3. We use tag questions to check information.

You haven't got a piece of paper, have you?

You don't know where the boss is, do you?

The meeting's tomorrow at 9am, isn't it?

4. If we do not know the answer, these are real questions, and we use a rising intonation with the tag question.

Important points

1. In the present tense, if the subject is 'I', the auxiliary changes to 'are' or 'aren't'.

I'm sitting next to you, aren't I?

2. With 'let's', the tag question is 'shall we'.

Let's go to the beach, shall we?

3. With an imperative, the tag question is 'will you'.

Close the window, will you?

4. We use a positive tag question after a sentence containing a negative word such as never, hardly, nobody.

Nobody lives in this house, do they?

You've never liked me, have you?

5. When the subject is nothing, we use 'it' in the tag question.

Nothing bad happened, did it?

6. When the subject is nobody, somebody, everybody, no one, someone, or everyone, we use 'they' in the tag question.

Nobody asked for me, did they?

7. If the main verb in the sentence is 'have' (not an auxiliary verb), it is more common to use 'do' in the question tag.

You have a Ferrari, don't you?

8. With used to, we use 'didn't' in the tag question.

You used to work here, didn't you?

9. We can use positive question tags after positive sentences to express a reaction such as surprise or interest.

You're moving to Brazil, are you?

Lets see how well you know English. This should be interesting...
There are two ways to convey a message of a person, or the words spoken by a person to other person. We may quote the actual words of the speaker. This method is called Direct Speech. We may report what he said without quoting his exact words. This method is called Indirect Speech or Reported Speech.

Rule For The Change of Pronouns

Pronouns of the First Person in the Reported Speech are changed in indirect Speech to the same person as the subject of the Reporting Verb.

Pronouns of the Second Person in the reported speech are changed in Indirect to the same person as the noun or pronoun coming after the Reporting Verb. If the objectof the reporting verb is not given, the sense of the Pronoun to be used should be carefully determined.

Pronouns of the Third Person in the Reported Speech remain unchanged in Indirect Speech.

Rule of Changing the Tense

PRESENT SIMPLE changes into PAST SIMPLE

PRESENT CONTINUOUS changes into PAST CONTINUOUS

PRESENT PERFECT changes into PAST PERFECT

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS changes into PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

PAST SIMPLE changes into PAST PERFECT

PAST CONTINUOUS changes into PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

PAST PERFECT changes into PAST PERFECT (tense does not change)

FUTURE SIMPLE TENSE : WILL changes into WOULD

FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE : WILL BE changes into WOULD BE

FUTURE PERFECT TENSE : WILL HAVE changes into WOULD HAVE

The tense of reported speech may not change if reported speech is a universal truth though its reporting verb belongs to past tense.

Rule of Changing Words

Words indicating nearness of time or place in the Direct Speech are changed into those indicating distance when converted into Indirect Speech.

Now becomes then

Here becomes there

Ago becomes before

Thus becomes so

Today becomes that day

Tomorrow becomes the next day

Yesterday becomes the day before

Last night becomes the night before

This becomes that

These becomes those

Hence becomes thence.

1. Statement

S + P + O :

It is common that English speakers make offers in conversations in order to be polite and helpful. When they do so they use these expressions:

Offering

Shall I (verb1)……….?

Would you like me to (Verb1)………..?

Would you like ………?

Accepting an Offer

Oh yes, I’d love to.

That sounds nice.

That’s very kind of you.

Oh, thank you. Yes, please

Refusing an Offer

I’m sorry I can’t. I have to …

Oh, I’d love to, but I don’t think I can’t.

It’s all right. I can.......

A memo should be between 150 and 200 words long and requires the following information:
    • Who is the memo to?
    • Who is the memo from?
    • What is the memo about?
    • What is the date?
This information should be positioned next to the appropriate headings as in the example below. A job title may be added after the name of the sender (and/or recipient).

Memo

To:
From:
Subject:
Date:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Read through the information and identify what information needs to be included in your memo. Write the memo and add further points to provide additional information.

Sometimes the information given is in a suitable order. If it is not, you will have to group the points relating to the same subject together. When you have done this work out where to put the extra points you have added. The information in the memo should be presented in a logical order.

The language used in memos is shorter and more direct than a letter. It is important to stay to the point, but be polite. Make sure that the person who receives the memo will be able to understand the message.

How To Make Fried Banana

INGREDIENTS :

1 ripe black-skinned plantain or 4 small finger banana (make sure that the banana is sweet)

1 egg

1 tsp. sugar

6 Tbs. flour

water

a pinch of salt

vegetable oil for deep frying

STEPS/INSTRUCTION :

Place flour in a deep mixing bowl. Make a well in the middle of the flour, and add egg, sugar and salt. Add water little by little. Whisk vigorously until batter is evenly smooth for coating and not too thin. If it is too thin, add more flour.

Peel plantain or banana and cut in half lengthwise and then cut again with 4-inch width. Dip into batter to coat generously.

Heat oil in a wok or deep fryer until moderately hot. Place coated plantain or banana in the wok or deep fryer and fry slowly until golden brown and crispy. This usually take approximately 10-15 minutes. Remove bananas from oil, drain on paper napkins and dry well.

Serve while still warm

Idioms are a type of formulaic language. Formulaic language consists of fixed expressions which you learn and understand as units rather than as individual words. Idioms are fixed combinations of words whose meaning is often difficult to guess from the meaning of each individual word.

You will also sound more natural and fluent if you can use idioms in everyday conversation or informal writing. Be careful not to use too many, though!

text-align: center;">

When you ask for permission to use something that belongs to someone else you have to do your best to be polite. It is desirable to use the word "please."

Asking for Permission:

Can I go out, please?

May I open the window, please?

Please, can I have a look at your photo album?

Please, may I taste that hot spicy couscous dish?

Do you mind if I smoke?

Would you mind if I asked you something?

Is it okay if I sit here?

Would it be all right if I borrowed your mobile Phone?

Giving Permission:

Yes, please do.

Sure, go ahead.

Sure.

No problem.

Please feel free.

Refusing to give permission:

No, please don’t.

I’m sorry, but that’s not possible.

I'm afraid, but you can't.

In the English language being polite means much more than just saying ‘thank you’,‘sorry’ and ‘excuse me’. Very often it requires forming long and complex sentences and choosing an appropriateword for a specific context.
