In the last two companies I’ve worked for (including present day), I initiated something called the Social Learning Network or SLN for short. This was a group of individuals, united across the business, formed to help push the proverbial sticks forward as it relates to the shift from an all formal model of learning, to one that incorporates formal, informal and social learning.
In hindsight, the name was right for the moment, but wrong for

Still processing a lot after these intense four days…..will will no doubt blog more about this as I put the pieces of wisdom together in a more coherent way. TED is such an assault on all the senses, and this was even more true given that it was held in India.

This month’s Big Question is one that I’m asked all the time. How do you cost-justify social learning initiatives?
Social learning is no different from other business investments. You don’t sell the tools; you sell the business value of the project.

Back then, the only tools I really used were Word, PPT, Visio, Project…not a single authoring tool in sight. How does that landscape look like today? If you’re a freelance ID, what authoring tools do you claim you know? (I

It’s New Zealand’s last month of spring for 2009. When I started blogging, one of the things I became attuned to was the sheer upside-downness of the rest of the world – compared to where I live, that is. In the first few months, it was customary for me to wait overnight for the wave of blog comments to wash across a new post from countries other than those in the South Pacific, if it happened at all. Most activity I observe on my blog takes place after daylight.

What are the real opportunities in mobile learning?
One of the several sessions I’m doing at DevLearn next week (in addition to a pre-conference workshop with Jay Cross, a mobile development session with Richard Clark, and another session on the future of orgnanizational learning) is a mobile learning design introduction. In thinking through it, I reflected on a distinction I make between convenience and contextualization, and as usual I got into diagramming as a way to get a handle on it.

Fast Company has reviewed a new book by Roger Martin. Roger Martin is the dean of the Rotman School of Management (at the University of Toronto) and his new book is called: The Design of Business: Why Design Thinking is the Next Competitive Advantage. He thinks that companies are analysed to death and that stiffles any emerging innovation.
He wants companies to imagine the future, and use intuition and not rely solely on Management Consultants who push us into analytics.

Last week's post in this series on Education Reform discussed the pressing need for teachers to rebuild teaching as a profession. A key element in this rebuilding programme would be a requirement for teachers to undertake ongoing, reflective, professional development in order to remain licensed as teachers.

Such an initiative

When creating a sim, do you start with high-level best practices, little relationships, or the sim engine?

(Author's note: yeah, this is a pretty geeky entry, even by my standards!) In The Complete Guide to Simulations and Serious Games , as well as with my clients, I suggest that the design of a sim involves going through three steps iteratively. The first step is to identify high-level best practices and analysis , which has typically already been captured in existing (albeit not effective) courses. The second step is to identify the hundreds of little relationships that make up the core knowledge, typically broken into the three categories of actions, systems, and results.
