An electric bicycle, also known as an e-bike, is a bicycle with an electric motor used to power the vehicle. 1. Hill Climbing

That may sound obvious, but it's the primary advantage. A good electric bike effectively flattens hills, increasing your average speed and eliminating the 'groan' factor when a gradient comes into view. Provided you supply a reasonable amount of effort, you can expect to climb hills of 1 in 10 (10%) on an electric bike with ease, and clear a maximum gradient of 1 in 7 (14%), or much more. In hilly country, the effect is nothing short of miraculous.

2. Safety

It sounds unlikely, doesn't it? But the mathematics is compelling. Think of a steep and busy road, with cars climbing at 30mph. If you previously slogged up the hill at 6mph, but can tackle the same gradient at 12mph with an electric bike, you will see 33% fewer cars, and they will pass you at 18mph rather than 24mph. Or at least, we think that's correct. Whatever the figures, there's no doubt that an electric bike helps to keep you out of danger. The same general principle applies to road junctions - the faster your acceleration, the sooner you can get out of trouble. And with no need to rush the hills, you won't be tempted to ride downhill at breakneck speed... another useful safety feature.

3. Running Costs

Purchase cost is a little more than a conventional bike, mechanical wear and tear is about the same, and electricity is so cheap as to be largely irrelevant, but there is an extra expense in terms of battery depreciation. Consequently, an electric bike costs more to run - typically 5 - 8 pence per mile against 4.2 pence per mile for a non-assisted bike . However, electric bike running costs should really be compared with those of a moped, or a car, when the electric bike replaces car mileage. With cars costing 50 - 80 pence per mile, an electric bike can save a great deal of money.

4. Personal Fitness

Surely a conventional bike will keep you fitter? That, of course, depends how much - if at all - you use it. Research has found that 46% of conventional bikes are used only once or twice a week, with a further 30% being used once a fortnight or even less. By contrast, a recent survey of electric bicycle owners reveals that a third ride their bike at least once a day and 81% use the bike at least once a week . The figures confirm our experience that an electric bike typically gets used at least twice as often as a conventional machine. Because riding an electric bike is a great deal more enjoyable in hilly country, into strong winds, or when carrying heavy loads, users tend to make better use of them. The motor provides up to half the effort, but more regular use means more exercise for the rider.

5. No Sweat!

Sweat may not be a serious issue when you're out for a leisure ride, but it's more important if you're cycling to work. Although some employers are rather grudgingly providing showers and other facilities for cyclists, the great majority have no intention of doing so. An electric bike eliminates the problem at source. Oddly enough, you won't sweat on an electric bike, even if you put in the same amount of effort as you do on an ordinary bike. This is because you will be going faster, and the 'wind chill' effect is greater, keeping you cool. In hot weather, it's possible to maintain a normal schedule by transferring a bit more load to the electric motor. In colder weather - or if you feel in need of exercise - just throttle back, or turn the motor off.

6. Clean & Green

Electric bikes obviously consume energy, where a conventional bikes does not (provided we ignore the environmental cost of growing and processing food - see below). However, the amount of energy used is very small compared to a moped, motorcycle or car. Besides fuel, the only consumables are the batteries, and these can normally be recycled when life-expired. As for energy use, electric bikes typically consume fuel at an average rate of 100 to 150 watts of electrical energy, against 15,000 or so for a car (admittedly travelling faster, out of town at least). In terms of fuel consumption, an electric bike achieves about 800-2,000mpg (280 - 700 km/litre) . No other commercially available vehicle can match figures of this kind. If it's hard to place these numbers in your own lifestyle, think of a 100 watt electric light bulb burning for an evening - that's enough energy to propel an electrically-assisted bike for 20 to 40 miles...

7. Genuinely Sustainable

There's a lot of nonsense talked about sustainability in transport, but an electric bicycle can be made genuinely sustainable. Purchase electricity from a 'green' supplier, or generate your own with a roof-mounted windmill or solar panel array, and the vehicles' fossil fuel consumption will be zero. Surely a conventional bike does that already? Only if you grow the food you consume whilst riding it. Unfortunately, most modern food production and distribution is so fuel-intensive that the consumption of a typical cyclist is not terribly good. 8. Faster Travel

In theory a car can average a high speed, but in practise speed often falls below 10mph in cities. The problem is congestion - motorcycles get around this to some extent, but they're still confined to the road network. An electric bike can maintain a higher average speed than a bicycle but take advantage of the same network of cycle facilities, giving access to routes that cars and motorcycles cannot reach. The result is often a faster door-to-door journey time than any other mode. And by taking advantage of the uncongested cycle network, but eliminating hills and headwinds, electric bikes are often the most consistent mode of travel.

9. High Resale Value

Electric bikes are new technology, and these are early days, but the evidence points to a much better resale value than a conventional bike. True, a typical electric bike costs more to buy, at £400-£1,000, but it seems you'll get most of that back if you sell the machine on.

10. Motorised, but no Red Tape!

You know how it is... MOT due, log book missing, insurance costs rising year on year. Electric bikes are treated just like ordinary bicycles for legislative purposes, so there's absolutely no registration or legislation to worry about. You are of course free to insure the machine if you wish, but there's no compulsion to do anything but enjoy yourself!

Like any sport, bicycling involves risk of injury and damage. By choosing to ride a bicycle, you assume the responsibility for that risk, so you need to know — and to practice — the rules of safe and responsible riding and of proper use and maintenance. Proper use and maintenance of your bicycle reduces risk of injury.

This Manual contains many “Warnings” and “Cautions” concerning the consequences of failure to maintain or inspect your bicycle and of failure to follow safe cycling practices.

•The combination of the safety alert symbol and the word
WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, could result in serious injury or death.

•The combination of the safety alert symbol and the
word CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation
which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury, or
is an alert against unsafe practices.

•The word CAUTION used without the safety alert symbol
indicates a situation which, if not avoided, could result in
serious damage to the bicycle or the voiding of your warranty.
Many of the Warnings and Cautions say “you may lose
control and fall”. Because any fall can result in serious injury or
even death, we do not always repeat the warning of possible
injury or death.

Because it is impossible to anticipate every situation or condition which can occur while riding, this Manual makes no representation about the safe use of the bicycle under all conditions. There are risks associated with the use of any bicycle which cannot be predicted or avoided, and which are the sole responsibility of the rider.

Here is the new PL500HS on Bionx version,I got this info from searching for Bionx500 high speed(greenspeed.us).There is a conversational electric bike where suit for long trip journey with speed over 25mph.This 500watt hub motor is lack on hill climbing power and less on torque then 350watt hub motor but efficiently on flat ground movement.The 500watt Bionx super-light lithium-ion battery pack will take up to 55 miles trip depending on assistance levels and can be charged in 3 hours.

California leads the way to a greener America:

Bikes converted with the Bionx PL500HS are only street legal in California and need to be registered as a motorized bicycle using DMV form REG 230. California DMV registration requires a one-time registration fee of $18 and in 4 to 6 weeks you will receive mini-plates that need to be attached to the bicycle. A valid driver's license and DOT helmet are also required.
Sales of the PL500 are currently restricted to in-store purchases and shipping to California addresses only.

Magnetic Field Drive Technology:
The Bionx motor is a high performance direct drive, grearles and brushless hub motor. Equipped with magnetic field drive technology, the external magnets turn whereas the stator is stationary. No friction inside the Bionx motor means no wear on internal parts resulting in a motor that will last for years.

Intelligent Assistance System:
Using an on-board microprocessor, the Bionx motor is measuring your thrusting power (through chain torque) and compensates for your weakest leg insuring a smooth progression while accellerating.

ASSISTANCE
Bionx is ideal for riders that want to ride longer and keep up with the pack or those that want help up hills and against the wind. Four assistance levels amplify the cyclist’effort by 25%, 50%, 100% or 300%, allowing the cyclist to ride faster while giving the same effort (or ride at the same speed with less effort). Each assistance level is proportional to the rider’s effort.

GENERATION
Bionx offers four levels of power generation. Regenerative braking activates when the rear handbrake is used. It is possible to charge the Bionx battery pack by pedaling against motor resistance. Generation mode makes it harder to pedal so its often used when going downhill. Please note that the generative mode does not replace the existing brakes, but considerably increases braking quality, especially on extended downhill runs.

Power can be applied in a number of ways:

the front or rear wheel may be powered via a motor built into the hub (e.g. Powabyke, Heinzmann, Crystalyte, Singer Motor Wheel)
a motor mounted in the frame (called a frame mount) or behind the rider (called a rack mount) may drive the rear wheel with a chain or rubber belt (e.g. Staton, Golden Eagle Bike Engine (Kevlar belt rack mount), Whizzer and in Europe Derny. Most of these bikes and kits are under 50 cc's and do not have to be registered in most states (the exception being the Whizzer NE5).
power may be transferred to one or other wheel from a motor mounted directly above, by bringing a powered roller or rubber belt into contact with the tire (e.g. Staton, and in Europe Zeta). These are called "friction drive".
the bicycle's chain may be driven by a sprocket (pedelec bikes such as the Giant Twist/LaFree) which may force the rider to pedal or incorporate a ratchet allowing either pedalling or powering or both. (e.g. Ecospeed)

Internal combustion

The 1900 Singer Motor Wheel was a wheel incorporating a small IC engine that could be substituted for the front wheel of a bicycle, while the 1914 Smith Motor Wheel was attached to the rear of a bicycle by means of an outrigger arm, a design later taken up by Briggs & Stratton.
The VéloSoleX, probably the last large-scale IC-powered motorized bicycle, used friction drive to the front wheel. The last volume manufactured in-wheel IC engine was used on the Honda P50 moped which ceased production around 1968.

Tanaka bolt-on bike motors (branded Bike Bug, Aqua Bug, Tas Spitz, Sears Free Spirit, and Little Devil) were popular through the 1960s and 1970s, and are gaining a renewed following thanks to superior clean efficient "Pure Fire" line of 2 stroke motors.In the late-2000s, the RevoPower Wheel returned to a concept similar to the 1900 Singer Motor Wheel, again providing an engine that would go in place of the ordinary front wheel of the bicycle to provide extra power.

The Golden Eagle Bike Engine rack mount system which uses a large ring attached to the spokes became available in the mid-2000's. This system provides uncanny low-end torque while providing 200+ miles per gallon transportation (approximately 25 mph). These systems utilize Robin Subaru engines (four stroke) that have the EPA's cleanest rating.

Electric

There are many possible types of electric motorized bicycles with several technologies available for electric motors, varying in cost and complexity; direct-drive and geared motor units are both used. An electric power-assist system may be added to almost any pedal cycle. Chain drive and hub motors are both common, friction drive less so. Most hub motors are in the 250w to 450w category, however there are some available with up to 2000 watts such as Crystalyte Phoenix.

Electric bicycles are generally powered by rechargeable batteries. Early electric bicycles developed in Switzerland in the late 1980ies came with solar charging stations but these were later fixed on roofs and connected so as to feed into the utility supply (mains). The bicycles were then charged from the mains, as is common today. A few models have the option of using the motor to effect regenerative braking or charging while being pedalled or rolling downhill. There are also experiments using fuel cells. Most modern electric bikes use permanent-magnet motors and pulse width modulated power electronic control. Batteries are lead-acid, NiCd, NiMH or Li-ion, with Lithium ion polymer batteries just beginning to be used.

Electric motorized bicycles can be power-on-demand, where the motor is activated by a handlebar mounted throttle, and/or a pedelec (from pedal electric), where the electric motor is regulated by pedalling. These may have a mechanism such as a crank sensor to detect the pedalling cadence, or a torque sensor, or both. The degree of assistance can usually be adjusted to either maximise acceleration and speed or extend the range per battery charge.

Range is a key consideration with electric bikes, and is affected by factors such as motor efficiency, battery capacity, efficiency of the driving electronics, aerodynamics, hills and weight of the bike and rider combined. The range of an electric bike is usually stated as somewhere between 7km (uphill on electric power only) to 70km (minimum assistance). The key environmental concern with electric bikes is the problem of battery disposal.

Other power sources

Individuals have built bicycles powered by steam and air engines, and there is at least one example of a jet propelled bicycle. No large-scale manufacture of any of these is known.Some experiments have also been undertaken with supercapacitors to supplement or replace batteries for cars and some SUVS.

The legal definition and status of motorized bicycles varies by jurisdiction. Legal terms for motorized bicycles include "Power Assisted Bicycle (PAB)" (Canada), MOPED, "Electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC)" (United Kingdom), or (commonly) "electric bicycle", frequently abbreviated as "ebike". In comparison some custom designs of electric bike have a range of up to 40 miles (64 km) and a maximum speed of +55 mph (89 km/h).

While generally not known it is possible to register a Cyclemotor or motorized bike for legal use on the UK's roads.If the machine is from a known manufacturer such as Rudge or Francis-Barnett this is a fairly simple procedure.It becomes much more complicated if this is not the case with current law requiring an SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) test for each individual machine.

In the United States low-speed electric bicycles (top speed under 20 mph and under 50 cc's or in the case of electric models 750 watts) are not considered motor vehicles by the federal government and are subject to the same consumer safety laws as unassisted bicycles. Their legality on public roads is under state jurisdiction, and varies; see the main Electric bicycle laws article for details on the law in individual states.

Eight provinces of Canada allow electric power assisted bicycles. The province of Ontario introduced a three-year trial ending October 2009 for these bicycles. In seven of the eight provinces, e-bikes are limited to 500W output, and cannot travel faster than 32 km/h (20 mph) on motor power alone on level ground. In Alberta the maximum output is 750W, and the max speed is 35 km/h. Age restrictions vary in Canada. All require an approved helmet. Some versions (e.g., if capable of operating without pedalling) of e-bikes require drivers' licenses in some provinces and have age restrictions. Vehicle licenses and liability insurance are not required. E-bikes are required to follow the same traffic regulations as regular bicycles. The rules for bicycles assisted by a gasoline motor or other fuel are not included in the regulations government e bikes. These are classified as motor cycles regardless of the power output of the motor and maximum attainable speed.

Generally they are considered vehicles (like motorcycles and pedal cycles), so are subject to the same rules of the road. In a few jurisdictions, motorized bicycles must be licensed and display vehicle registration plates. Regulations may define maximum power output and for electric bikes may or may not require an interlock to prevent use of power when the rider is not pedalling. In some cases regulatory requirements have been complicated by lobbying in respect of the Segway HT.

Torque sensors and Power controls were developed in the late 1990s. For example, Takada Yutky of Japan filed a patent in 1997 for such a device. In 1992 Vector Services Limited offered and sold an electric bicycle dubbed Zike.The bicycle included Nickel-cadmium batteries that were built into a frame member and included an 850 g permanent-magnet motor. Despite the Zike, in 1992 hardly any commercial electric bicycles were available. It wasn’t until 1998 when there were at least 49 different bikes. Production grew from 1993 to 2004 by an estimated 35%. By Contrast, according to Gardner, in 1995 regular bicycle production decreased from its peak 107 million units. Some of the less expensive electric bicycles used bulky lead acid batteries, whereas newer models generally used NiMH, NiCd and/or Li-ion batteries which offered lighter, denser capacity batteries. The end benefits usually varied from manufacturer; however, in general there was an increase in range and speed. By 2004 electric bicycles where manufactured by Currie Technologies, EV Global, Optibike, Giante Lite, Merida.

By 2001 the terms, E-Bikes, power bike, pedelec, assisted bicycle and power-assisted bicycle where commonly used to describe electric bicycles. E-bike, according to Google, is a term that has increased in trend. This term generally referred to an electric bicycle which used a throttle. For faster and more powerful models up to 80km/h, the terms Electric Motorbike or E-Motorbike are being used. is a European term that generally referred to an electric bicycle that incorporated a torque sensor and/or a power controller that delivered a proportionate level of assist and only ran when the rider pedaled. Finally, Assist Bicycle is the technical term used to describe such a vehicle and Power-Assisted Bicycle is used in the Canadian Federal Legislation, but is carefully defined to only apply to electric motor assist, and specifically excludes internal combustion engines.

A Motorized bicycle sometimes referred to as a light electric vehicle or LEV, is a bicycle with an attached motor used to assist with pedaling. Generally considered to be a vehicle, sometimes as a motor vehicle or a class of hybrid vehicle, motorized bicycles are usually powered by electric motors or small internal combustion engines. Some can be propelled by the motor alone if the rider chooses not to pedal, while in others the motor will only run if the rider pedals.

Some early motorized bicycles were powered by internal combustion engines whereas some utilized electric motors. With lighter batteries and better storage density, the electric motor has recently seen an increase in popularity.

Motorized bicycles are distinguished from motorcycles by being capable of being powered by pedals alone if required. The actual usage of the pedals varies widely according to the type of vehicle. Those known as mopeds mostly have pedals for emergency use or because of legal requirements and these are not normally used. Those known as power-assist bikes have the pedals as the main form of propulsion with the motor used to give a bit of extra speed, especially uphill. Many motorized bicycles are based on standard bicycle frame designs and technologies, although the modifications to the design to support motorization may be extensive.

In countries where there is a strong bicycle culture (notably in Asia), the motorized bicycle is particularly popular; in 1996 Shanghai had 370,000 motorized bicycles and 470,000 other vehicles.
