Electric Kool-Aid Jeremy Test!

Fever Tree

2022-05-30T07:30:00.001-07:00

Just imagine ... if possible, an even kitchier version of the Doors that explores a pastiche of 60’s stereotypes that isn’t too bad.

David Bowie — The Man Who Sold the World

2022-05-04T05:37:00.003-07:00

As my friend and I were digging in my record collection we came across The Man Who Sold the World. There might have been a time where I might have said this is a underrated classic, but those days are long gone, so today I’m saying this is a colossal piece of crap.

Fleetwood Mac — Tusk

2022-04-29T05:52:00.002-07:00

Yes, I totally realize that’s it’s stereotypical for a record collector to proclaim that Tusk is the best Fleetwood Mac album ... you’ll just have to face the fact that it is. No it doesn’t have the wall to wall hits of Rumours, but it’s chalk full of timeless artistry that can be played alone in morning having a cup of coffee or at night having a drink with friends, which to me is the mark of a great record. Critics and fans seem to hear an artsy post-punk New York sound to the music but I hear more a continuation of where Todd Rundgren was going with A Wizard, a True Star.

Thin Lizzy — Bad Reputation

2022-03-11T06:31:00.001-08:00

I’m not super in love with Thin Lizzy but they do have a certain charm and this is my favourite of their albums. Not only does it include the virtuoso producer Tony Visconti, giving the record great sound, but also the band was really able to make a flawless bridge of 70’s rock, metal and punk ... who else can say that?

Tyler, the Creator — Igor

2022-03-07T06:10:00.005-08:00

Igor is a deeply personal record about love, loss and all the other messy feelings that reside in the grey areas in between. Sonically it’s a brilliant pastiche of synth, soul, funk and hip hop. Basically the kind of music I was expecting when hearing about how great Kanye West is, who has a cameo on this very album. Tyler found a way to epitomize the spirit, sense of humour and style of the millennial generation, this music will only grow better with age like a time capsule for a certain period.

Fiona Apple — Fetch the Bolt Cutters

2022-03-04T06:42:00.000-08:00

Man, I can see why pitchfork gave this such a high rating. Fetch the Bolt Cutters has a acoustic industrial feel with a constant sense of structure-less rythme that guide the tracks to wherever Fiona means for them to go. There’s a dark, personal but playful mood drenched all over the album that very much mirrors the shack wacky feelings during the initial lockdowns and mandates, which made it the perfect release for beginning of the covid-19 pandemic.

Rolling Blackouts C.F. — Hope Downs

2022-03-02T05:27:00.002-08:00

Totally the amalgamation of early REM jangle and later Feelies Velvets style jams. I can’t say there is anything mind blowing on this album, other than they’re just great tunes.

MC5 — Back in the USA

2022-02-28T06:49:00.000-08:00

This subtly subdued stripped down version of MC5 rock ‘n’ roll is way more relevant to the first wave of punk than the bombastic stoner sludge of Kick Out the Jams. Both are great records, but only one you can play at a wild party and also in the morning while having a cup of coffee.

Parquet Courts — Content Nausea

2022-02-24T05:32:00.001-08:00

I really like this underrated Parquet Courts album. It has their classic sound but is drenched in Lou Reed New York drippy laziness, which works so well. This band epitomizes what I thought in the early aughts reading reviews of The Strokes should have sounded like but very much didn’t live up to their hype.

Big Thief — Dragon New Mountain I Believe In You

2022-02-23T06:29:00.000-08:00

It took me a while to get into this band, there was always something cheesy to their hipster indie folk shtick that kept me away and Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You is chalk full of that, but also comes off like a greatest hits album, mixing genres and styles that they seem to have perfected, from hippie country to weirdo new wave. I’m still probably not going out and buying all their records, but I love this one. Question is why are the animals at the campfire jam joined by a dinosaur and not a dragon?

I’m back ... I think!

2022-02-18T08:00:00.001-08:00

As the pandemic rages on with endless amounts of weirdness and insanity; my life has changed so much and my record collection has grown. It seems the mental malaise of isolation, government mandates and boredom has made me nostalgic about having several little personal projects on the go!

Mission accomplished!

2017-05-11T08:35:00.000-07:00

I am done doing this, it's not even fun anymore, it just feels like some kinda pretentious ego stroking exercise that is going nowhere. Admittedly I totally enjoyed doing the nerdy research on all these records and fully diving into the art of the album, I'm sure I have learnt something from all this over the years ... adieu!

Bob Marley And The Wailers -- Uprising

2017-04-01T07:12:00.001-07:00

Bob Marley is one of those rare artists that no matter how big he had gotten he never conprimised who he was or the music he was making, staying true to himself up until this final, ironically titled, album -- Uprising!

Ry Cooder -- Into The Purple Valley

2017-04-01T07:11:00.003-07:00

This album is a interesting pastiche of James Taylor dad rock vocals, Randy Newman-esque goofball lyrics and Taj Mahal styled guitar country-blues noodlings.

Townes Van Zandt -- For The Sake Of The Song

2017-04-01T07:11:00.001-07:00

Man I wonder if this over produced attempt at Spectorizing Townes Van Zandt would sound as bad if his other albums didn't exsist? Because compared to everything else it is still quite very good, and does contain many would be rerecorded classics, other than the completely banal Talkin' Karate Blues.

Fear -- The Record (2012)

2017-04-01T07:09:00.001-07:00

What a rip off, cash grabbing piece of shit! Why would a band rerecord their classic debut album and make it exactly look like the original ... I'll tell you why, to sucker you into buying this garbage under false pretences, probably so they can avoid getting jobs for a bit longer. The only redeeming factor is that this is a total Lee Ving, douche bag, f-off to his fans, maneuver and the worst part is I'm going to resell this turd to a unsuspecting record store as soon as possible ... so watch out!

The Lemonheads -- Lovely

2017-03-13T09:28:00.001-07:00

You can't help but notice that this major label debut is sonically the same as its predecessor Creator, but the Gram Parsons cover of Brass Buttons was a definite foreshadow of where the band was going with It's A Shame About Ray.

Kurt Vile -- Smoke Ring For My Halo

2017-03-13T09:27:00.003-07:00

A kinda Appalachian folk album but with an indie rock twist, maybe not as accessible as his later albums but almost more brilliant. I feel that Smoke Ring For My Halo will be a better contender for the test of time.

Guided By Voices -- Alien Lane

2017-03-13T09:27:00.001-07:00

I can't help but think Alien Lanes is like the more accessible younger brother of Bee Thousands, but when you compare it to everything else it's still a lo-fi indie masterpiece!

Elevator To Hell -- Parts 1 - 3

2017-03-13T09:26:00.003-07:00

Elevator To Hell is like the dark folky way more stoner version of Eric's Trip, sorta like a teenager finally realizing adulthood.

Stereo Total -- Monokini

2017-03-13T09:26:00.001-07:00

Drenchingly European electro duo. Just imagine Suicide and Stereolab making a baby!

Brian Jonestown Massacre -- Strung Out In Heaven

2017-03-13T09:24:00.001-07:00

I'm certain they would totally deny it, and stay true to their purism, but this is definitely the BJM's attempt at a hit record, and deserveingly so. The production is way more polished than any of their previous albums, they were just coming off the coat tails of an acclaimed documentary film Dig!, and were signed to a major indie label, although I have to selfishly admit I'm glad it didn't work because they are still ours!

Chet Baker -- Chet

2017-03-13T09:22:00.001-07:00

If you are looking for smooth mellowed out jazz, you need to not look further, Chet will send you on on a stream of cool to chillsville USA ... population -- you!

Mazzy Star -- Among My Swan

2017-03-13T09:21:00.001-07:00

This may not include and of their sad bastard mega hits, but I definitely find this to be their most cohesive listening collection of songs as a whole.

Liz Phair -- Exile In Guyville

2017-03-13T09:20:00.003-07:00

Man I expected to find this album extremely dated, which yes some of it is, but otherwise it is a heart felt lo-fi indie piece of art. The lyrics are so relatable to anyone with a sensitive disposition, that I, in my recent dating messes and weird break ups, feel like I'm Exiled In Girlville.
