Services (Matra MS) has turned its attention to the production of Light Electric Vehicles with the release of numerous high-performance electric bicycles and quadricyles beginning in 2006. The latest offering from the company renowned for its past achievements in the automotive design arena – including a stint in Formula One in which it won a world title (with Jackie Stewart driving in 1969) and winning the Le Mans 24 hour race with its own V12 engines - is the MS1, a “Human Electric Hybrid Motorcycle” shown recently in Paris that is expected to hit the market in the spring of 2008. Powered by a 1kW Motor Wheel, the MS1 has its maximum speed limited to 28mph (45 kmh) in electric mode and can travel up to 62 miles (100 km) - depending on type of battery - on purely electric power… and if you run out of juice there is always the ever-reliable (9-speed) pedal-option.The aluminum frame hybrid weighs in at just 40 kg (with batteries) and features 100 mm suspension forks and 400 mm front disc brakes up front, plus regenerative braking to extend the battery life. Recharging time is estimated at 3 – 6 hours.

The MS1 starts via a magnetic card swiped through the LCD display on the handlebars (which also indicates remaining battery power and speed) and an electric alarm is included along with LED lights for night-time commuting.

Another notable feature often omitted from both motorcycle and bicycle design is the ability to adjust the height and depth of the saddle and handlebars.

Matra MS (known Matra Automobile before it began to wind down its automobile construction activities) cites some very good reasons for entering the light electric vehicle market: 40% of errands and trips do not exceed 2 km, and 80% do not exceed 5 km, cars move at an average of 18 km hour in city traffic (no matter what’s under the bonnet) and transportation is responsible for 70% of particle emissions and for 40% of nitrogen oxide emissions, half of which is due to cars. Conventional motorcycles aren’t really any better – polluting almost as much as cars and making twice as much noise.

Matra MS plans to expand its Light Electric Vehicle product line in coming years as it pursues its Neighborhood Electric Transport Solutions (STEP) program promoting economically competitive, noiseless and emissions free transport. This includes fostering "lean manufacturing", both under its own brand name as well as others (for which negotiations are in progress).

Few details are available on the exact release dates or price of the MS1 (though reports have it at around €3,500 ($4,951) but we will certainly be keeping an eye out for this one - stay tuned. More information on the Matra range (in French) can be found at www.matrasports.com and for an overview of the company's achievements in terms of concept cars.
<!--

BMW is by no means inventing the electric scooter here. But it claims that its scooter will offer "a much broader spectrum of use" than those models already out there.

Funded in part by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, the e-scooter charges at a typical power socket--no special charging stations necessary. Details on performance are scarce for the time being, but we do know that it performs best at 37 miles per hour and under. That's not to say that it won't be able to attain a higher speed than that, though, and BMW emphasizes that it understands the importance of being able to pass others on the road, even while carrying two people. A release suggests that the BMW e-scooter's engine offers performance on par with a 600 cc engine, the kind seen in rival scooters. BMW's offering gets a range of a little over 60 miles--good enough for most commutes.

The scooter does away with a main frame, instead using the aluminum battery casing for that purpose. The rear frame and swing arm is connected to that casing. The scooter's battery is cooled by the air to save space, while the electric motor and electronics are cooled by liquid. The drivetrain is set up in such a way that braking produces energy for the battery. Wired breaks down the mechanics of this nice and succinctly, explaining that "the electric motor is mounted behind the battery and connected via toothed belt to the belt pulley, which is mounted coaxially on the swinging fork pivot with drive pinion. A roller chain connects to the rear wheel." The regenerative forces that result wind up in a 10-20% extended range.

"We are aiming at the typical commuter," says a BMW spokesperson in the requisite (but fun) zooming-around-tracks-and-closed-roads video. "People living in or around big cities, going to work every day maybe to the supermarket or the cinema in the evening and back home again." It's not quite ready for the mass market yet, and given its manufacturer and funder, it's of course most likely to hit the streets of Europe well before it makes its way stateside.
<!--

Electric scooters can be bought for sometimes as much as 50% off if you can be just a little patient and know where to look. Electric scooters are incredibly fun these days, and they've seemed to have taken the world by storm. I see several of them all the time riding up and down my street here in Houston, and I've read that they are popular in many European countries.

What a lot of people don't know is that there is a way to get your new electric scooter a discount using an old tactic in a slightly new way. It's called price comparison (and a little bit patience). Yes, this is an old tactic, but it still works. And it works really well. The internet makes it really easy to do this as long as you put in just a little leg work. Here's how I would go about looking for a new electric scooter.

1)Start at Froogle.com. This is Google's shopping search engine where you can look for whatever it is you need. Try searching for 'electric scooter,' 'electric scooter sale' or even 'electric scooter discount.' This should yield an impressive number of electric scooter retailer competing for your business. Write down the best prices and deal you see.

2)Run the same searches on regular Google.com. Pay attention to the right hand side ads. Generally, the right hand side ads are 'sponsored ads' which vendors pay a lot of money (often over $1/click) to place their ads on the right hand side of the results for certain keyword they bid on in a sort of virtual keyword auction. Visit some sites and write down the best deals you see here.

3)Run the same searches on Yahoo.com. Pay attention to the right hand side sponsored ads. Yahoo owns Overture which handles their pay-per-click business. Often you will find different vendors advertising on Yahoo than Google. You want to compare as many different electric scooter companies as possible. They more the bestter. This is why it is worth visiting Yahoo, not just Google. Visit some sites and write down the best deals you see here.

4)Now visit Ebay and run a search for 'electric scooter' and 'electric scooters.' Write down the results and watch some auctions for a week or so. Write down the prices you see things being sold for. You can usually press the 'watch this auction' in MyEbay as a sort of bookmark so you can watch all the sales that happen for particular items.

5)Come back in 2 weeks and do it all over again. At the end of this you will be able to know that you've done a lot of research and you will know where the best deals are.

Overall, I wouldn't be surprised if you could save more than 50% on a new electric scooter doing this. After all, you did the work: you are entitled to getting paid for it. There are more tricks than this, and this isn't all of it. But it's a start to getting you your new electric scooter.

Linda Harrison is author of ?A Quick Guide to Buying an Electric Scooter.? Inspired by the classic shape and design of a skateboard, the Ripstick looks like something out of the future. Instead of the traditional four-wheel skateboard, this amazing board can make smooth, quick 360-degree turns on just two wheels. Just stand on the sturdy traction plates and subtle movements propel the Ripstick even up a hill! The front and rear flexible panels are controlled by a spring-oriented bar located on the top of the wheels. The rugged polyurethane wheels are 77mm/85A with ABEC-5 bearings. Separating the two traction plates is a padded rubber carrying handle. Measures 33.5" long x 10" wide. Weighs 8 lbs. Wear helmet and pads for safety. 90-day warranty.
We live quite close to many of the community's destinations, but not so close that we could walk to reach them. Many of our neighbors have golf carts, but the many features of the Ezip 1000 made it a better choice for us.

A golf cart just wasn't practical for us, because we have no place to put it. Also, we don't play golf. We didn't know that an electric scooter could be a solution, until one of our neighbors rode by us on one.

She was going at a pretty good clip, so we couldn't stop her and ask her some questions about it. We did have her phone number, so we decided to give her a call.

She explained that her model was made by Currie Technologies, a company with a good reputation for environmentally friendly products. They have a large product line of electric scooters that mostly target older kids and adults.

The Currie Ezip 1000 is their "top of the line" model, and is very popular with adults. It has a rider weight capacity of 260 lbs, which luckily is perfect for my wife and myself.

She went on to explain that it did a great job of going up the hills in our community. This is due to it's powerful 1000 watt motor, and relatively light weight of 85 lbs.

This model has a top speed of 15 mph, which is actually the speed limit in many areas of our community.

Currie Technologies is noted for their "cutting edge" battery technology. This particular unit has Three, 12 volt batteries in it's battery pack. This allows for approximately 40 minutes of continuous riding time, which suited our needs perfectly!

We are limited on space, so the folding handle bars are a real plus. It is also fun to drive, with a twist grip throttle and front and rear disc brakes.

Thanks to the Currie Ezip 1000, we don't have to drive our car for our many short trips, and we can have fun, too!

Also, we bought our Currie Ezip 1000 from a website that offers quality electric scooters at DIRT CHEAP prices! Visit http://bestelectricscooters.net NOW and discover insider's tips for saving money on your favorite electric scooter. Also, watch cool videos of the best electric scooters in action!

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Michael_S_Hutchins
<!--

The batteries can be charged simply by using household electricity outlets which are discharged to power electric motors with zero emissions.

Electric cars are very reliable and maintenance free. There is no need of oil changes and filter change and tuning. Electric Vehicles have fewer than 1/10th as many parts as a gas car. There's no engine, transmission, spark plugs, valves, fuel tank, tailpipe, distributor, starter, clutch, muffler or catalytic converter.

The best way to reduce carbon emissions is to utilize the ever cleaner, greener, more renewable grid to power transportation. Only grid-rechargeable cars can attain the end goal of zero-emissions and ensure fuel price stability.

Why Battery Electric Vehicle and Not Fuel Cell?
Fuel Cells consumes 4 times as much electricity per mile as similarly sized Battery Electric Vehicle.
Fuel Cells require electricity to compress Hydrogen.
Fuel Cells-Hydrogen emits 12.5 kg of Carbon-di-Oxide per kg of Hydrogen produced.
Driving range of Battery Electric Vehicle is 2 times compared to Fuel Cell Vehicle using same vehicle weight.
Fuel Cell Vehicle fueling and system is complicated compared to Battery Electric Vehicle plug-in system.
Fuel cell hydrogen tank safety is a major concern.

COURTESY EV INNOVATIONS
<!--

If a wire is connected between the negative and positive terminals, the electrons will flow from the negative to the positive terminal as fast as they can (wearing out the battery very quickly - this also tends to be dangerous, especially with larger batteries, so it is not recommended). Normally, you connect some type of load to the battery using the wire. The load might be something like a light bulb, a motor, or an electronic circuit like a radio.

Inside the battery itself, a chemical reaction produces the electrons. The speed of electron production by this chemical reaction (the battery's internal resistance) controls how many electrons can flow between the terminals. Electrons flow from the battery into a wire, and must travel from the negative to the positive terminal for the chemical reaction to take place. That is why a battery can sit on a shelf for a year and still have plenty of power - unless electrons are flowing from the negative to the positive terminal, the chemical reaction does not occur. However, once you connect a wire, the reaction begins.
COURTESY EV INNOVATIONS
<!--
