Two security guards are in a critical condition in hospital after they were seriously injured in an explosion at an ex-colliery.

The two men, aged 38 and 26, suffered serious facial burns in the blast at the former Welbeck Colliery site, near Meden Vale, in Nottinghamshire on Saturday.

They have not yet been identified but are being treated in the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, where they are both said to be in a critical but stable condition.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: “It is understood that the men were working at the site as security personnel.”

He added: “Detectives are liaising with the site owners, UK Coal, with the fire service and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to determine the sequence of events leading up to the incident.”

The explosion was reported at around 7.30pm on Saturday and involved an electrical sub-station above the ground.

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said the explosion was from an electrical component in the 40m x 30m single-storey building. She added: “The fire itself was very small. The main issue was the explosion itself and the two people injured. Investigations are ongoing.”

A spokesman for UK Coal said it is thought the two security guards were the only people on site at the time of the explosion and they called the emergency services in the aftermath of the blast.

A statement from UK Coal said: “There has been no mining at the colliery since it was closed in May 2010, following which all of the underground shafts and workings have been sealed and closed. The electricity substation is situated on the surface and supplies both the site and surrounding area when required.

“The two injured men were not UK Coal employees, but were contracted to be working as security guards on the site. UK Coal continues to help the police and HSE investigations.”

United Kingdom – A man suffered a serious electrical shock after cutting into cable in an accident at a building site.

The unnamed man worked for Wain Homes (North West) Ltd at the time of the incident in November 2010. The firm was building a group of new houses and refurbishing an existing farm house as part of the same project.

The 42 year old labourer was asked to cut an electricity cable that was running through the cellar of the farm property. He had been told that there was no power running through the cable and that it was safe to cut.

However, when he cut the cable he suffered a 230 volt electric shock. The shock was strong enough to throw him across the room.

The HSE investigated the accident and found that the construction firm had not checked existing cables on the property to see if they were live or not. The company were prosecuted for breaking construction regulations and pleaded guilty at court recently.

They were fined £8,000 for breaking rules designed to protect the safety of workers.

EAST PEORIA, Ill. —Investigations have begun after an electrical accidentat a Caterpillar Inc. facility Monday morning left two men injured, one seriously.

Robert Klimko, 39, reportedly of Dunlap, sustained burns to an arm, a leg and his side, said a spokesman for OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was flown by helicopter from that hospital to the burn unit at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was listed in serious condition later Monday.

A 34-year-old man who was also treated at St. Francis and released was identified as Scott Albritton by Mike Everett, business manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 34, of which both victims are members.

“I’ve seen them both and I think both will be fine,” Everett said later Monday.

He and other IBEW officials had not yet been given details of the accident, which Everett said took place at about 8 a.m. at Caterpillar’s Building BB in East Peoria.

“We’ve been focusing on getting (Klimko’s) wife and family up to Rockford” through Monday afternoon, Everett said.

Caterpillar no doubt has begun its investigation, “and I’m sure OSHA has been notified,” he said, referring to the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration.

Both men were working on Caterpillar property under contract with Oberlander Electric Co. of Peoria at the time, Everett said.

Caterpillar issued a statement Monday afternoon confirming that “two employees of an outside company were injured while they were doing work inside a Caterpillar facility in East Peoria.”

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the injured individuals and to their families and friends. Safety is our most important responsibility at all Caterpillar facilities,” company spokesman Jim Dugan said in the statement. “Caterpillar will work closely with the appropriate parties to investigate the cause of the accident.”

East Peoria Fire Department Assistant Chief Randy Hurd said both victims were treated at the scene of the accident before they were taken by ambulance to St. Francis. He had no further details of the accident and Caterpillar released no further information regarding it Monday.

Klimko has been a member of IBEW for 18 years as a journeyman wiremen, according to published information. Further information on Albritton was unavailable Monday.

Update:

The condition of an electrician who was seriously burned last week in an accident at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria has improved.

Robert Klimko, 39, of Dunlap, was listed in fair condition Tuesday at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he was flown by helicopter from a Peoria hospital after the accident the morning of Dec. 20 at Caterpillar’s Building BB.

Klimko, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 34, was working for Oberlander Electric Co. of Peoria, under contract with Caterpillar, when he sustained burns to an arm, a leg and his side. The accident remains under investigation.

A second electrician, Scott Albritton, 34, suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Fiarhope, FL- Fairhope officials say Greg McCoy, and employee with the city of Fairhope Electrical Department, was injured.

They say it was the result of a shock caused by electrical contact. McCoy was performing work on a power line located on South Section Street at Morphy Avenue when the accident occurred.

He was taken to USA Medical Center in Mobile by Life-Flight helicopter.

Scott Sligh, Superintendent of the Electric Department, stated that Mr. McCoy was wearing all required safety equipment at the time. He also said the exact circumstances that led to the accident are under investigation.

Sligh said that Mr. McCoy was in an elevated aerial lift working on the power line when the electrical contact occurred and credits other electric department employees with saving McCoy.

Benjamin Patterson and Douglas Brown, employed with the electric department, were present at the work site and brought Mr. McCoy down safely, sought medical treatment, and are credited with saving his life.

Fairhope, AK – Fairhope officials say Greg McCoy, and employee with the city of Fairhope Electrical Department, was injured.

A power outage occurred as a result of the accident, affecting wide-spread areas of Fairhope, but electrical service has been restored.
