Bumi Armada buys support vessel for US$15.8mil

Bumi Armada Bhd, through unit Bumi Armada Offshore Contractor Ltd, has acquired and taken delivery of a multipurpose platform support vessel (MPSV) from Condor Shipco Ltd for US$15.8mil (RM49.12mil).

Bumi Armada executive director-cum-chief executive officer Hassan Basma said the acquisition underpinned the company’s strategy to provide services to the oil and gas industry, as exploration and production moves further from shore to deeper and harsher waters.

“The Armada Condor joins our Transport and Installation fleet, which comprises a derrick pipelay barge and a subsea umbilicals, riser and flowlines (SURF) vessel in providing a broad range of support services for offshore installation and subsea work,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The diesel electric vessel, which was re-named Armada Condor, was rebuilt in 2002, which involved an extension of vessel length, an addition of the Dynamic Positioning 2 (DP) system and thrusters. “The reconstruction ensured the Armada Condor had the facilities and capability for worldwide operations,” Hassan said.

The support vessel has 1,100 square metres of deck space with a deck load capacity of 1,300 tonnes.

The Armada Condor can accommodate 127 people.

Petronas Awards US$2b LNG Plant Contract to JGC Corporation

Kuala Lumpur: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has awarded a contract worth nearly US$2bil to Japan's JGC Corporation to build the liquefied natural gas (LNG) train in Bintulu.

JGC said on its website on Thursday the contract was awarded to its Malaysian subsidiary, JGC Malaysia Sdn Bhd for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) work.

This would be to construct the 9th LNG Train and its associated facilities in the Petronas LNG Complex

"The EPCC Contract is valued close to US$2.0bil, and work is for completion at the end of 2015," it said, confirming a StarBiz report.

TOKYO: Japanese engineering firm JGC Corp has won an order from Malaysian state oil firm Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) train in Malaysia's Sarawak state in a deal estimated at 170 billion yen ($1.77 billion), the Nikkei business daily reported on Thursday.

The ninth LNG facility, called Petronas LNG Train 9, with capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per annum, is expected to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2015.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Dialog said DECSB would hold 55% stake and the balance 45% will be held by Richtech.

Lundin Petroleum Discovers Oil Offshore Peninsular Malaysia

Swedish independent oil and gas exploration and production company Lundin Petroleum AB has discovered oil offshore Peninsular Malaysia.

It said on Tuesday its unit Lundin Malaysia BV discovered oil in the Ara-1 well that was drilled in Block PM308A.

It said Ara-1 was drilled to a total depth of 4,030 metres by the jack-up rig West Courageous in 75 metres water depth.

Lundin added the objective of the well was to target the extension of the Paleogene intra-rift oil sands encountered in the Janglau-1 well drilled by Lundin Petroleum in 2011.

“Ara-1 encountered 9 thin oil-bearing sands in a high-pressured intra-rift section extending over a vertical interval of 800 metres,” it said.

It said the well confirmed the extension of the new intra-rift oil play across a very large structural complex in the northeast of PM308A below a major regional seal.

The well also found effective sand reservoirs at depths below 3,500 metres. The oil pay zones intersected by Ara-1 were however individually thinner than pre-drill expectation.

“Ara-1 was plugged and abandoned as an oil discovery well after completion of the well evaluation programme. Work has commenced to estimate the range of resources discovered,” it said.

Lundin said the PM308A production sharing contract is operated by Lundin Malaysia BV with 35% equity interest. JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration (Peninsular Malaysia) Ltd has a 40% stake and Petronas Carigali 25%.

Petronas Pre-Tax Profit Falls to RM89.08 Billion

Petronas’ pre-tax profit dwindled to RM89.08 billion for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2012 from RM103.79 billion in 2011 amid challenging circumstances.

Executive Vice-President (Finance) Datuk George Ratilal said profit and net operating profit after tax also fell by RM9.6 billion and RM7.7 billion, respectively, due to lower margins, resulting from higher operating costs and impairment losses on certain property, plant and equipment.

However, revenue rose to RM291.0 billion from RM288.5 billion in 2011, he told a media briefing on the national oil corporation’s 2012 financial results today.

For the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2012, Petronas’ pre-tax profit declined to RM15.16 billion from RM25.39 billion in the same period in 2011.

Its revenue slipped to RM76.77 billion from RM78.05 billion due to lower crude oil trading volume and ringgit’s appreciation against the US dollar.

Petronas President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Shamsul Azhar Abbas expects the industry environment for this year not to be more different from last year.

He said the economic climate remains uncertain in the US and at the same time insignificant sign of economic improvement prevailed in Europe.

“We will focus more on increasing oil production this year,” he said, adding that production will increase from domestic discoveries.

“The production from the three fields in Iraq which we started will come on board by the fourth quarter of this year,” he said.

Shamsul Azhar said Petronas will pay a RM27 billion dividend to the government this year vis-a-vis RM28 billion last year.

Shamsul Azhar said he believed Petronas’ RM8.8 billion buyout offer price for MISC Bhd was right despite criticism from minority shareholders that the price was too low.

“We reckon that it is the right number. At the end of the day, it’s very simple, everyone has the right to choose,” he said.

Petronas had offered RM5.30 per share to buy out minority shareholdings in MISC with a view to take the national shipping company private.

Petronas owns 62.67 per cent or 2.797 billion shares in MISC.

On its oil project in Venezuela, Shamsul Azhar said the project was progressing well and the first production will start early next year instead of this year.

“We are still at the entry-level position and it’s a difficult environment to operate in that country.

“With regard to possible growth, hopefully the whole environment is going to change and bankers become more friendly in terms of loan disbursement,” he said.

On Petronas’ operations in Sudan, Shamsul Azhar said Petronas will discuss with the Sudan authorities to extend the production period.

“Sudan is still our cash cow. In fact, all our investments have been fully recovered,” he added.

The oil giant’s exploration and production revenue posted a decline due to stop-order instruction in south Sudan operations and asset impairment in Egypt.

Halliburton to Double its Manufacturing Output in Johor by 2015

HALLIBURTON Energy Services (M) Sdn Bhd, the local unit of global provider of products and services to the oil and gas industry, is planning to double its manufacturing output in Senai by 2015.

Its Area Vice President, Rao Abdullah said currently, the plant is running at full capacity and producing a total of RM300 million worth of output annually.

"We will be investing an additional RM105 million for this, on top of more than RM500 million investment spent there. In the next two years, we hope to double the output to RM600 million in value annually," he said in an interview recently.

Rao said currently the products are catered for the local as well as export markets which include Brazil, Middle East, Latin America and Africa.

The plant, which has a built-up area of 190,000 sq ft, currently manufactures completion tools and cementing product service lines.

Among key products made at this plant are float equipment, sliding side doors, permanent packers and retrievable packers.

In line with the manufacturing expansion, Rao said the company is also planning to double its workforce at the facility from 300 people to 600 in two years.

For that purpose, the company will be talking to Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) to find a solution to sourcing additional employees.

"We are looking for high-skilled people like engineers and machinists. That is why we need to talk to MIDA because we have problems in sourcing these people here," Rao said.

The company currently has more than 1,500 employees nationwide.

Apart from Johor, Halliburton has expanded its facilities and services in the last few years to Kuala Lumpur, Miri (Sarawak), Kemaman (Terengganu) and Labuan.

Rao said the additional investment was just the beginning and the company is committed in looking at investing and expanding further in the country.

Bumi Armada Bhd (Bumi Armada) has entered into contracts to purchase four multi-purpose platform support vessels (MPSVs) with Nam Cheong International Ltd for a total value of approximately US$130 million, excluding owner furnished equipment.

In a press statement, Bumi Armada said that each MPSV would be 88.8 metres long and have the capability to support offshore deep water activities with multi-purpose functions of transporting cargo, oil recovery and be on standby/rescue work. This was under the company’s vessel new build programme ‘Steel on Water 2’ (SOW 2), the statement elaborated.

Bumi Armada executive director and chief executive officer Hassan Basma said, “As oil exploration and production moves further from shore to deeper, harsher waters coupled with increased safety and operational requirements post-Macondo, there is a corresponding increase in demand for larger, safer, fuel-efficient and technically-more sophisticated deepwater vessels.

“These four vessels are part of our OSV (offshore support vessel) expansion programme, SOW 2, that will spearhead development of a greener, cleaner, safer and more efficient fleet for Bumi Armada.

“This new build programme will see Bumi Armada yet again leading the industry in Malaysia through the building and owning of cutting edge MPSVs, the first of its kind in Malaysia.

“Bumi Armada’s SOW 2 programme will ensure that the company remains knots ahead of the rest,” he said.

The three-year exploration term carries significant execution challenges not least of which is our new role as an Operator in Malaysia. In line with this growth, ConocoPhillips is seeking a suitably qualified professional to join its team as :

GEOSCIENTIST (Location : kuala Lumpur )

The Job :

This position will work as a member of a GGRE team that is responsible for the subsurface evaluation of the block, including prospect generation and well location selection. Key activities will include G&G interpretation, involvement with 2D seismic acquisition and 3D seismic reprocessing efforts, and providing geologic support to SB311 drilling personnel during well planning and execution.

The position will also interface with development project personnel in Malaysia and COP technical groups in Houston.

• Work with the Senior Geoscientist to deliver subsurface evaluation of SB311 block and surrounding areas

• Interpret existing seismic data sets, as well as newly acquired/ reprocessed data as it becomes available

• Incorporate relevant well data into subsurface evaluation

• Provide subsurface support to drilling engineer during well planning and execution

• Participate in technical discussions with partners

• As needed, support BU in non-operated exploration program, and assist in creating BU growth strategy

Requirement :

• Bachelor’s Degree in Geoscience ( preferably MSc )

• High safety, environmental and ethical standards

• Broad geosciences knowledge base with experience in both geophysics and geology

• Competency in SE Asia basins and deepwater turbidite system is strongly preferred

• A strong team player with good communication skills, a high level of self-motivation and the ability to influence partners ( Shell and Petronas Carigali )
