Rete in fibra plastica in casa od in ufficio sfruttando i condotti esistenti ?
Da ora è possibile facilmente !

Come ?

• il Capitolo 1 riporta le caratteristiche e la struttura delle fibre ottiche, passando in rassegna il principio di funzionamento, i parametri caratteristici, la classificazione, le connessioni, i metodi di fabbricazione e le problematiche principali. Dopodiché si elencheranno i pro ed i contro delle fibre ottiche in vetro rispetto ai mezzi metallici;

• il Capitolo 2 espone l’architettura dei sistemi di comunicazione in fibra ottica, introducendo alcuni cenni sui dispositivi che li compongono. Dopodiché si tratteranno il sistema WDM, le problematiche principali ed infine le prestazioni dei sistemi di comunicazione in fibra ottica;

• il Capitolo 3 illustra la struttura delle fibre ottiche plastiche, passando in rassegna i metodi di fabbricazione, le caratteristiche principali, le
connessioni e le procedure di installazione di questa tecnologia;

• il Capitolo 4 analizza le principali applicazioni delle fibre ottiche plastiche, mettendo in evidenza una tecnologia molto promettente per il futuro, la Ethernet over POF (in abbreviazione EoPOF). In seguito si parlerà di POFTO, un’organizzazione internazionale che ha come scopo la promozione delle fibre ottiche plastiche a livello mondiale nel settore ICT, e di alcuni progetti volti alla diffusione e allo sviluppo dei sistemi di comunicazione basati su tale tecnologia;

To put POF in the box (STB/Gateway) is half the cost relative to HPNA/PLC.

Very soon you will have GigE available over the same POF cable you put in your wall today at a similar low cost.
GigE over 1000BaseTX will break your heart as the every increasing noise fog envelops your house.
Wifi is fantastic for email and browsing but when you want guaranteed no intruption TV - it has to be a fibre.

Glass - don't put it in a house unless you have deep pockets to pay for eye surgery when some kid sticks it in his eye.

POF is the hotest wired solution for a home you can use.

It is 1/5 the carbon footprint of an equal length of copper cable - thats a big number when you are a Telco installing millions of miles per year.

It is fully recyclable.
It is low cost.
Eye safe.
Super fast and easy to terminate and install and you get guaranteed BW - unlike the PLC/MOCA/HPNA/Ghn scam of selling you the top rate but delivering the bottom.

POF complies to IEEE802.3 so when it says 100Mb or 1000Mb on the box that is exactly what the line rate is.

Honestly - POF is just red-hot.

Plastic Optical Fiber is a GREEN Communication Technology

Greener technology is not just about power consumption.

If you compare 1m of POF cable to 1m of CAT5 cable and look at the CO2 generated during manufacturer then POF works out at approximately 1/5th the extraction cost - this is primarily due to the lack of copper.

The extraction of the copper for CAT5/5e (including an account for 70% recycling of the metal) still runs to a CO2 cost 5 times that of an equivalent length of POF.

So POF scores very high on the green scale when compared to technologies that need a copper cable.

This is one reason that Asia and India are now looking closely at POF for mass deployment.
With metal costs soaring non-metal based solutions like POF are growing in importance.

Glass is perfect for outside the home but not great in an environment where kids, pets and DIY folk are at play. POF is ideal in this space.

Advances in communications technology to seamlessly connect all types of home devices and appliances are driving the vision to create an intelligent home ecosystem.
This would enable control, access and information sharing among all the devices and thereby a much more enhanced user experience.
The future growth of electronics at home lies in the devices being able to wirelessly communicate among themselves and with one or more universal handheld portable multiradio devices (including other intelligent control points).
Such a control device would be able to control the other wireless-enabled devices in a distributed or centralized manner.
All devices would in the future come with some type of a radio interface built into them.
One could potentially conceive the giant intelligent “home system” as being distributed but connected in a modular fashion over a large-area wireless infrastructure.
This naturally requires a vast amount of research in various aspects of networking, from privacy/security to high performance to seamless connectivity, emulating “being there” with the device or the equipment.

The Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) illumination and decoration is among the last generation lighting systems, with high technology, offering the most looked for advantages in the market compared with traditional technology

Low energy consumption: POF illumination and decoration effectively lights wide, broad areas with a single source. An ideal way to lower consumption and expenses.

Safety: POF does not transmit electricity, but solely light. POF system is specially perfect for wet or hazardous environments. And remote power source keeps electrical components at a safe distance.

Cold light: The optical fiber emits cold light (without infra and violet light), thus, the illumination does not affect the existing room temperature and degrade the goods under the shining of the cold light. This characteristic makes it ideal for illumination of pictures or works of art where another type of illumination could alter the original colors.

Visually attractive: A soft, clean and pure color effect is obtained by POF technology. This technology also allows to get color changes as well as dimmer effects, sparkling, blinkings, etc by adopting a filter. The whole system effects are full of beautiful, outstanding and wonderful performance.

Non-specialized maintenance: Except for the replacement of the light source, it is a maintenance-free product. No bulbs to burn out or replace in the cable system.

Easy installation: Its flexibility turns it a more adaptable product for the different types of installations

The variety of POF types are growing rapidly. The most typical and important varities are:

End light optical fiber

End light optical cable

Side light optical fiber

Points light optical fiber

Why is Plastic Optical Fiber getting adopted more and more ?
With this video its easy to see why.

More than 20% of flat panel TVs shipped in Europe this year will be able to connect to the internet, according to a new report from Futuresource Consulting. The study follows in the wake of the 2009 European market introduction of the first TV and Blu-ray devices able to access content directly from the Net.

By the end of 2010, the installed base of connected TVs will increase to 15 million devices, representing nearly 10% of the total number of flat panel TVs in use. The next step for manufacturers, says Futuresource, will be to add more compelling video services, including paid-for movie streaming that will create revenue-sharing opportunities with content owners, aggregators and application developers.
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is a system where a digital television service is delivered using Internet Protocol over a network infrastructure, which may include delivery by a broadband connection.
A general definition of IPTV is television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional broadcast and cable formats, is received by the viewer through the technologies used for computer networks.
For residential users, IPTV is often provided in conjunction with Video on Demand and may be bundled with Internet services such as Web access and VoIP.
The commercial bundling of IPTV, VoIP and Internet access is referred to as "Triple Play" service (when these three are offered with mobility, the service is referred to as "Quadruple Play").
IPTV is typically supplied by a service provider using a closed network infrastructure.
This closed network approach is in competition with the delivery of TV content over the public Internet, called Internet Television.
In businesses, IPTV may be used to deliver television content over corporate LANs.

IPTV and Internet TV

A telco IPTV service is usually delivered over a complex and investment heavy walled garden network, which is carefully engineered to ensure bandwidth efficient delivery of vast amounts of multicast video traffic.
The higher network quality also enables easy delivery of high quality SD or HD TV content to subscribers’ homes.
This makes IPTV by default the preferred delivery platform for premium content.
However the investment for a telco to build an end-to-end IPTV service can be substantial.
By contrast "Internet TV" generally refers to transport streams sent over IP networks (normally the Internet) from outside the network that connects to the users premises.
An Internet TV provider has no control over the final delivery and so broadcasts on a "best effort" basis.
Elementary streams over IP networks and proprietary variants as used by websites such as YouTube are now rarely considered to be IPTV services.
Compared to telco IPTV, Internet TV is a quick-to-market and relatively low investment service.
Internet TV rides on existing infrastructure including broadband, ADSL, Wi-Fi, cable and satellite which makes it a valuable tool for a wide variety of service providers and content owners looking for new revenue streams.
However, due to the fact that IPTV is always delivered over low cost IP STBs, which have limited computing power, the capability for IPTV operators to provide diverse multimedia services is limited.
This is where Internet TV has an advantage as it is delivered to a subscriber's (generally) powerful PC.
The relative ease of establishing an Internet TV service seems at first a threat to telco IPTV operators’ multimillion dollar investment, but both services do not necessarily compete for the same customers and there are some synergies between the two such as a common technology platform in the form of web-based technologies for content storage and delivery.
Broadcast IPTV has two major architecture forms: free and fee based.
As of June 2006, there are over 1,300 free IPTV sources available.
This sector is growing rapidly and major television broadcasters worldwide are transmitting their broadcast signal over the Internet.
These free IPTV sources require only an Internet connection and an Internet enabled device such as a personal computer, HDTV connected to a computer or even a 3G cell/mobile phone to watch the IPTV content.
Various Web portals offer access to these free IPTV sources.
Some cite the ad-sponsored availability of TV series such as Lost as indicators that IPTV will become more prevalent.
Because IPTV uses standard networking protocols, it promises lower costs for operators and lower prices for users.
Using set-top boxes with broadband Internet connections, video can be streamed to households more efficiently than current coaxial cable.
ISPs are upgrading their networks to bring higher speeds and to allow multiple High Definition TV channels.
IPTV uses a two-way digital broadcast signal sent through a switched telephone or cable network by way of a broadband connection and a set-top box programmed with software (much like a cable or DSS box) that can handle viewer requests to access to many available media sources.
Local IPTV, as used by businesses for Audio Visual AV distribution on their company networks is typically based on a mixture of:
a) Conventional TV reception equipment and IPTV encoders
b) IPTV Gateways that take broadcast MPEG channels and IP wrap them to create multicast streams.

Protocols

IPTV covers both live TV (multicasting) as well as stored video (Video on Demand VOD).
The playback of IPTV requires either a personal computer or a set-top box connected to a TV.
Video content is typically compressed using either a MPEG-2 or a MPEG-4 codec and then sent in an MPEG transport stream delivered via IP Multicast in case of live TV or via IP Unicast in case of Video on Demand.
IP Multicast is a method in which information can be sent to multiple computers at the same time.
The newly released (MPEG-4) H.264 codec is increasingly used to replace the older MPEG-2 codec.
In standards-based IPTV systems, the primary underlying protocols used are:
* Live TV uses IGMP version 2 or IGMP version 3 for IPv4 for connecting to a multicast stream (TV channel) and for changing from one multicast stream to another (TV channel change).
* VOD is using the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP).
* NPVR (Network-based Personal Video Recorder) is also using the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP).
Network Personal Video Recording is a consumer service where real-time broadcast television is captured in the network on a server allowing the end user to access the recorded programs on the schedule of their choice, rather than being tied to the broadcast schedule.
The NPVR system provides time-shifted viewing of broadcast programs, allowing subscribers to record and watch programs at their convenience, without the requirement of a truly personal PVR device.
It could be compared as a "PVR that is built into the network" however that would be slightly misleading unless the word "Personal" is, of course, changed to "Public" for this context.
Subscribers can choose from the programmes available in the network-based library, when they want, without needing yet another device or remote control.
However, many people would still prefer to have their own PVR device, as it would allow them to choose exactly what they want to record.
This bypasses the strict copyright and licensing regulations, as well as other limitations, that often prevent the network itself from providing "on demand" access to certain programmes (see Heroes, below).
In Greece, On Telecoms offers an NPVR service to all subscribers in their basic package with all the programming of all major national Greek TV channels for the last 72 hours.
The user has to sign in their contract that they agree that the company will record national programming of the last 72 hours FOR them so that they can come around any legal implications (like the ones mentioned here) as this service would work like a personal PVR.
Currently, the only alternatives to IPTV are traditional TV distribution technologies such as terrestrial, satellite and cable.
However, cable can be upgraded to two-way capability and can thus also carry IPTV.

Advantages

The IP-based platform offers significant advantages, including the ability to integrate television with other IP-based services like high speed Internet access and VoIP.
A switched IP network also allows for the delivery of significantly more content and functionality.
In a typical TV or satellite network, using broadcast video technology, all the content constantly flows downstream to each customer, and the customer switches the content at the set-top box.
The customer can select from as many choices as the telecomms, cable or satellite company can stuff into the “pipe” flowing into the home.
A switched IP network works differently. Content remains in the network, and only the content the customer selects is sent into the customer’s home.
That frees up bandwidth, and the customer’s choice is less restricted by the size of the “pipe” into the home.
This also implies that the customer's privacy could be compromised to a greater extent than is possible with traditional TV or satellite networks.
It may also provide a means to hack into, or at least disrupt (see Denial of Service) the private network.
IPTV and Internet TV A telco IPTV service is usually delivered over a complex and investment heavy walled garden network, which is carefully engineered to ensure bandwidth efficient delivery of vast amounts of multicast video traffic. ISPs are upgrading their networks to bring higher speeds and to allow multiple </itunes:summary>

<feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.youtube.com/v/XfSRL7l80O4&hl=it_IT&fs=1&rel=0</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

Why use Plastic Optical Fibers ?

Honestly - POF is just red-hot;

With recent widespread use of the Internet at home the traditional network communication lines are gradually unable to deliver the increasing amount of data, such as audio data, image data and movie data, via the Internet.
In order to satisfy these demands, FTTH (Fiber To The Home), in which optical fibers are provided to the home, and the like, are being made available widely to consumers.
FTTH delivers faster broadband access compared to existing access technologies including network connections based on phone lines (xDSL) or coaxial cable.
Optical fibers has become the medium of choice for sending digital signals between the central office and the customers remote terminals.

Optical fibers form some of the main lines through which telecommunications data is connected all over the world. An optical fiber typically includes a core region surrounded concentrically by a cladding. The optical fiber bidirectional communication is achieved by using a single optical fiber through which two types of light signals with different wavelengths are propagated bidirectionally has become increasingly common in optical communication applications such as FTTH.
In FTTH, optical signal capabilities are routed from a central office or other distribution location to a plurality of homes in that particular location via optical fibers and one or more optical connectors and/or other optical connection devices.

A possible solution for integration of Ethernet, Telecommunication and IPTV Networks in "the last hundred meters" may be use Glass Optical Fiber networking to reach the building and then use Plastic Optical Fiber to reach the home equipments.
