Pros:

Awesome “Drip” friendly 3 piece mini electronic cigarette with e-liquid to refill cartridges available, good nicotine hit and vapor production in 3 tasty flavors AND a low price.

Cons:

Cartridge strength and flavor selection limited

Bottom Line:

Scoring above average or higher in every category, the Lucky Slicks Retro mini electronic cigarette is a very impressive “drip” friendly 3-piece model at an impressive price point even considering “consumables” such as batteries are not covered under the 1 year limited warranty. However, to maintain performance with this model I highly recommend dripping.

I was surprised by the vapor, flavor and nicotine hit produced by the Retro electronic cigarette the first time I tried it. It looks like so many other mini e-cig models out there, but when I took a closer look I noticed that Lucky Slicks has combined a battery usually found on 2-piece models with a very sturdy and high quality atomizer. On top of that Lucky Slicks encourages drip re-filling of cartridges and even sale their own nicotine solution / e-liquid! The result is a very satisfying electronic cigarette smoking experience at a low cost as long as you don’t consider topping off your cartridges a hassle or inconvenience.

It would be nice though if there were more than 3 flavors and 3 nicotine strengths to choose from. All the flavors were very good tasting and the highest strength (16mg) cartridge delivered a surprisingly strong throat sensation and nicotine hit. Lucky Slicks doesn’t cover batteries in the 1-year warranty although I guess it makes sense at this price point. I am hopeful they will cover batteries that are dead-on-arrival (DOA) since they have a 30 day money back guarantee.

Overall, Lucky Slicks easily passes the “would suggest it to a friend” test in my book. Definitely check out the atomizer, cartridge and cost sections of the full review to find more details on what sets the Retro electronic cigarette apart from the pack. Then head over to the Lucky Slicks website and pick up a starter kit!

Overall: 3.8 (above average)

Cartridge Rating = 3.5

The Retro electronic cigarette starter kit comes with 5 nicotine cartridges in your choice of flavor and nicotine level. Lucky Slicks offers 3 flavors (Lucky Cowboy, Lucky Royal 4, and Menthol) and 3 nicotine levels (0mg, 8mg, & 16mg).

Even though there are only 3 flavor options for this mini e cigarette they all are rich and flavorful tasting. Lucky Cowboy is actually like a Marlboro, Lucky Royal 4 is your RY4 tobacco flavor.

And, even though there are only 3 nicotine levels the throat sensation and nicotine hit is a little better than what you would expect from 8mg and 16mg concentrations sold by other companies.

Cartridges were always filled and “juicy,” individually wrapped and sealed with rubber stoppers yet, cartridge life was actually a bit short with the stock cartridges. I believe this is because the combination of battery and atomizer Lucky Slicks has chosen for their electronic cigarette is very effective at vaporizing the solution in the cartridge quickly. Because of this I was only able to get 100-175 puffs per cartridge when not refilling. 100 puffs is equal to about half a pack of cigarettes by my system.

But, fortunately Lucky Slicks carts are cheap and they even sale their own e-liquid and drip refilling does NOT void your warranty! In fact, I would say you almost have to start dripping the Retro stock cartridges between 75 – 100 puffs mark or sooner to maintain vapor and nicotine intake.

I suggest topping off the cartridges with a few drops of the nicotine solution before each smoking session. Doing this can extend cartridge life greatly and you will only need to replace the cartridge when the reservoir inside begins to melt from atomizer heat or the batting in the reservoir becomes burnt.

The cartridges are easily above average because they are good tasting and refillable, but I have to rate the lack of flavor options and nicotine strengths down even though Lucky Slicks also sales empty cartridges that fit their retro model that you can presumably fill yourself with “e-juice” from other vendors.

Atomizer Rating = 4.0

I found the Retro electronic cigarette atomizers very durable and high quality able to withstand a lot of heat. I also noticed some additional “wicking” fibers under the metal wicking bridge that I believe improves nic-solution wicking, vapor, nicotine hit and the overall smoking experience.

You may be able to see what I am talking about in this picture:

Atomizer Fibers

I think this is a very good thing, but I am somewhat concerned as these fibers may lead to the buildup of residue and gunk I have seen that may cause atomizer failure over time. Also, if you have separate atomizers for each flavor you smoke and let one atomizer sit around for a while without smoking on it the residue on the fibers is going to gum up and again, potentially cause problems including atomizer failure.

All atomizers fail eventually though and are semi-consumable anyway so I feel the high rating is justified for the enhanced smoking experience.

The atomizer also has 2 holes that combined with the 4 intake holes on the battery deliver a consistent medium draw.

Vapor Production = 3.5

Out of the gate Lucky Slicks vapor is pretty awesome. I have seen better, but don’t get me wrong. I have to rate it only just above average though, because the atomizer and battery on Retro is so effective at vaporizing the nic juice in the cartridge the vapor really starts to dwindle between 50-75 puffs.

This is where drip refills come to the rescue! Except, topping off the stock cartridges before each smoking session is pretty much required at some point as soon as the vapor starts to dwindle unless you still find the experience acceptable. Some people love dripping anyway, while others consider it sometimes messy and a hassle.

So, just be prepared to buy a couple bottles of your favorite flavor and strength of nicotine solution once you figure out what that is.

Batteries & Charger Rating = 4.0

This electronic cigarette starter kit includes 2 identical very compact mini e-cig batteries and a wall charger. There is no USB charger or extended life battery options. Also, the white batteries have orange LED’s while the black batteries have blue LEDs. The battery itself has 4 intake air holes to supply the 2 hole atomizer which aid in delivering a nice consistent medium draw similar to a real cigarette.

The batteries have an automatic cut-off switch with cut-off times ranging from 2-4 seconds. Most of the time you will get a 3 second drag before the automatic cutoff kicks in. Keep dragging through the cutoff though, and the battery / LED will turn back on very quickly and give you another 2 seconds of vapor and another and another.. Under some cases I seemed to get a 4 second drag, but was not able to consistently duplicate this.

The batteries have a pretty good life of about 175-200 puffs and also charge pretty quick too! After an initial charge of about 30 minutes for each battery, full recharges took about 1.5 hours for each battery! When they need recharged, the tip blinks a number of times to let you know.

The wall charger has fairly clear charging indicators with the red light to indicate charging, that turns green to indicate that the battery is fully charged. I did notice some “flickering” between red and green when getting close to a full charge and also sometimes when picking the charger up to check the charging indicator.

I like that Luckyslicks provides a blue tip light option with their black battery to make it easier for a person to smoke their Retro mini electronic cigarette in public places with less confusion. It would be nice though if the blue light was also available in the white batteries.

I give the batteries and chargers a solid GOOD rating for good battery life, fairly quick recharge, and a well done automatic cut-off. The deductions in this category were mainly for flakiness in the charging indicators, not including a USB charger and only offering the blue LED in the black battery.

Construction / Quality Rating = 3.5

Fit of the battery in the cartridge and the chargers is good, but not perfect. There was a teeny tiny amount of wobble in the “roll” test I do to check fit of battery into cartridge.

The finish of the batteries is matte with the fine gold banding / pin stripes going around the body that you actually see on a lot of 2 piece designs these days. I found that the finish on the cartridges was also matte which is nice as opposed to having mismatched finishes on battery and cartridge.

Overall, I think the quality, especially the atomizer and the battery, is more than what you would expect from this price point, but not spectacular and considering the flickering charging indicator which seemed to be loose connection in the cheap charger, I had to rate quality down a bit.

Cost / Value Rating = 4.0

All things considered in this review, the Lucky Slicks Retro model is a very good value. The starter kits are reasonable and come with 2 high quality atomizers.

Cartridges are some of the cheapest I have seen at $7.50 a pack of 5 (discounted to about ~$6.50 a pack for buying 10 packs) and I suggest topping off with Lucky Slick’s nicotine solution that costs $10 for a 10ml bottle at the time of writing this.

And, even though USB and car chargers are NOT included in the starter kit, they can be purchased on the web site very cheaply and all the charging accessories including car charger are very low cost.

The only replacement parts that you pay a little extra for are the atomizers and batteries which are about middle of the road in terms of price, but at least the quality doesn’t disappoint. However, consumables such as these batteries and atomizers are not covered under warranty. You can probably get them replaced if they are dead on arrival (DOA), but beyond that this will become a regular expense like cartridges and e-liquid.

Style and Extra Features

There aren’t really any extra features with the Lucky Slicks electronic cigarette and it seems the focus is simply on delivering a solid 3 piece mini electronic cigarette and ecig smoking experience.

I like the 2 distinct style / color options offered: one with black battery / cartridge and blue LED and one white battery, tan cartridge and orange LED that is about as close to looking like a real cigarette as you can get with an e-cig these days.

I also like the carrying case (sold separately) that I also highly recommend since it can carry and store 2 batteries and 2 cartridges although your bottle(s) of nicotine solution refill will have to be stored separately. (see below)

Actually, one feature I appreciate Lucky Slicks incorporating is a child-safe bottle with warning labels for the nicotine solution. This is SO important! Keep this stuff away from kids and pets. Also, don’t ingest it directly as it is poisonous in high concentrations! Good job.

Customer Service

Lucky Slicks sent me free samples so I could write this review. Thanks! But, now I cannot speak to the quality of customer service because I did not deal with customer service.

I did check the forums and found 0 complaints about Lucky Slicks electronic cigarettes. In fact I didn’t even see any mention of the brand, but this could be because they are fairly new in the space. Please comment if you have something to say about the customer service of this company.

If smokers relatively new to e cigs, maybe doing some research in preparation to buy, must understand that e cig cartridge life is almost ALWAYS exaggerated. I admit that even the careful measurements I take while testing various models out for the reviews on this site are exaggerated.

Here is why cartridge life is always exaggerated..

Suppliers lie – ehem.. exaggerate to compete on cost

Comparing electric cigs to real cigs is like comparing APPLES and DRAGONs (Yes, and I explain why it really may be THAT different)

Supplier e Cig Cartridge Life Exaggerations

First, e cigarette vendors exaggerate cartridge life to look better than the competition and to get you to buy.

Suppliers know that the high cost of cigarettes is one of the biggest reasons smokers take an interest in electronic cigarettes. They expect to you to do a little math to figure out how much money you could save so they lie, ehem, I mean exaggerate basically giving folks un-realistic expectations.

This has many bad side consequences with the worst being that people get a BAD first impression of e cigs and are set up for failure when they run out of cartridges in 2 days instead of 2 weeks like promised!

Scummy vendors typically say something like, “one cartridge is equal to 100 packs or 10 cartons of cigarettes, or 10,000 puffs” or something ridiculous like that.. OK, now maybe that’s really exaggerated, but you get the picture.

Comparing e Cig Cartridge Life to Real Cigarettes

Second, comparing cigarettes and electronic cigarettes really is “comparing apples and oranges.”

There are many practical reasons why it is really hard to compare e cig cartridges to cigarettes. These “practical reasons” are the reason why most of my cartridge life measurements are exaggerated. My cartridge life measurements are still somewhat useful though when comparing one brand of electronic cigarette to another. I will summarize a few:

Automatic Cut-off Switches

Many electronic cigarettes have an automatic cut-off switch that cuts power to the batter after a 2-4 second drag. The cut-off time is never exactly the same though. If a particular e cig I am reviewing doesn’t have an automatic cut-off, then I try to take 3 second drags. I do my best, but it is not very accurate.

Also, some people may be used to taking 4 or 5 second drags off a real cigarette. These people may need to need 2 drags off an electronic cigarette to equal their usual drag.

Low or Diminishing Vapor

As you smoke an e cig, the battery and cartridge slowly become drained. When this happens you may find yourself doing primer puffs, or extra multiple puffs to get the same vapor and nicotine hit you are used to when the battery and cartridge are fresh. Regular cigarettes don’t behave this way and so e cig cartridges get puffed more frequently to get the same result.

Some people prefer to give their atomizer a primer puff before taking a couple drags, or covering atomizer holes to optimize performance. Even though the atomizer isn’t totally warmed up on the primer puff, some nicotine solution still gets vaporized, but NOT inhaled and wasted in the process.

Nicotine Concentration / Absorbtion is Lower with Electronic Cigarettes

Generally, the concentration of nicotine that is extracted from tobacco and put into the nicotine solution is lower than what is in a real cigarette. Also, at the time of writing this, the chemistry of combusted cigarette smoke delivers the nicotine into the bloodstream far more efficiently than the chemistry of atomized vapor of nicotine.

One report I read said that cigarettes deliver 10X the amount of nicotine that e cigs can put into the bloodstream. This report however, didn’t say what strength cartridge was being used. It could have been 4mg for all I know.

The good news is that I read another report on improvements to nicotine inhaler technology that will improve e cig cartridge life greatly over time.

The Best Solution to the Problem?

First, just understand that comparing cigarettes to nicotine cartridges is like comparing apples to dragons! Well, maybe not quite that different. But, just be aware and don’t get your hopes up too much.

Second, if this is an issue that really bothers you then consider “dripping.” Some electronic cigarette vendors sell nicotine solution you can use “drip,” top off or refill your cartridges a number of times before they have to be replaced. A three piece electronic cigarette is the easiest to refill, but it is possible with many 2-piece designs as well.

Just be careful, because some e cigarette vendors void your warranty if drip your cartridges!!

It’s time for a little rant. One of the cornerstone arguments for banning fruit and candy flavored cigarettes (and now electronic cigarettes) is that they target minors.

Really? How can an inanimate pack of cigs or an electronic cigarette perform such a heinous act? Quite simple really.. With a little help and proper placement from living breathing PEOPLE anything can be dangerous or evil.

As a result of this media fueled dogma, all candy and fruit flavored cigarettes are now banned as of late last year.

I realized again just how bogus the fruit and candy flavored cigarette argument is today as I walked around Target and then later WalGreens and noticed fruit flavored Nicorette nicotine gum in plain sight for all to see, including children, and NOT behind the counter.

In Target the Nicorette was on the VERY bottom shelf so low a 3 YEAR OLD COULD SEE IT AND REACH IT! How do I know? I was with my 3 year old nephew at the time.

Nicorette & Commit & Target Brand Nicotine Infused Candy & Gum on Bottom Shelf

I had actually seen the Nicorette there before on a prior visit, but it didn’t hit home until I saw my nephew checking out stuff on the shelves and then prayed that he didn’t ask me about it.

As we walked out of that isle I was pissed!

In case you haven’t seen any of the TV commercials Nicorette is now also available in a plethora of tasty flavors including: Orange, Fruit Chill, Cinnamon Surge, Extreme Chill, Fresh Mint, and Mint. And, if you were hoping for cherry NO PROBLEM. Check out the Commit nicotine lozenge available in cherry or mint.

Nicorette Flavor Selection (Fruit Chill, Cinnamon Surge, Extreme Chill, Fresh Mint) also in Target

They would probably have more flavors if the crap didn’t have such a high failure rate and anyone actually bought it.

Now it’s not like a kid is going to be able to walk up to a register and buy nicotine gum or lozenges. But, a little hoodlum might be able shop lift some if it is right out in the open. And, a curious little nephew might ask some innocent questions and become persistent if you don’t have a good answer.

So why is it that no one is going ballistic about this?

This stuff is literally GUM and CANDY with nicotine in it yet somehow it isn’t targeting children?!

What’s the difference? Why can’t adults enjoy flavors of tobacco products other than menthol and tobacco? Is it that we can’t keep them out of kids reach unless they are banned by the governement?

Of course not. We can control the availability and placement of tobacco products, including flavored options and we have done so for years.

I believe there are a few reasons why people aren’t going nuts about fruit flavored nicotine gum and lozenges yet jump all over tobacco products including electronic cigarettes now.

First, big tobacco has evil intentions and that has pretty much been proven. Electronic cigarettes are guilty by association and hard to defend as long as those tacky mall kiosks keep being allowed by mall owners.

Nicotine gum and lozenges on the the other hand… that’s intended as medication and is approved by the FDA as a nicotine replacement therapy. Apparently its intentions are soooo good and noble it is OK to put right on the lowest shelf in a large super market.

The people who believe the previous two paragraphs must struggle to gain a better understanding of intentions vs. results. Isn’t the road to hell paved with good intentions? What is the origin of that cliché anyway?

This stuff is literally GUM and CANDY with nicotine in it …

The fact is that the most popular cigarette flavor among minors that smoke is menthol. The one flavor exempted from the government’s flavored cigarette ban. This non-value-add could only be the work of special interests and politicians trying to get re-elected.

Finally, I think people hardly pay any attention to fruit and candy flavored nicorette gum / lozenges because we aren’t hammered constantly with marketing, legislation and media stories suggesting it to us as we are with the candy and fruit flavored tobacco products argument.

So, the next time someone suggests to you that candy and fruit flavored cigarettes have rightly been banned because they target children tell them sure… but now what are they going to do about the nicotine infused gum and candy right there on the bottom shelf?

The FDA should lift the ban on candy and fruit flavored cigarettes, Target needs to get the Nicorette OFF the bottom shelf and malls need to eliminate 100% of electronic cigarette kiosks and I.D. anyone that comes into a smoke shop if they look under age.

Is this really that hard people??? Sheeesh!!

Rant complete.

Walgreens Nicotine Gum & Candy at Least Partially Behind Counter

Pros:

The Green Smoke e Cigarette has awesome vapor production, solid batteries and chargers, good nicotine hit and 8 nicotine cartridge flavors available at all nicotine levels.

Cons:

Starter kits and batteries a little pricey (but backed by a solid 1-year warranty)

Bottom Line:

Tons of people are using the Green Smoke 2-piece electronic cigarette right now which resulted in many folks here suggesting I test out and review it so I finally caved and got the Basic Starter Kit.

I got a great first impression the moment I took my first drag and experienced its awesome vapor. With the 8 flavor sampler pack I bought, I was able to test all the flavors and expect them to be in stock at whatever nicotine level I wanted. The nicotine hit from the Green Smoke e cigarette was also very satisfying partly due to the fact that the 3 second automatic cut-off restarts immediately activating the atomizer again if you continue taking a drag. Finally, charging the batteries was a snap with very clear charging indicators and reliable chargers.

At first I thought that the only drawback to this unit was a slightly above average price that would have to be justified by performance. But, then I realized that the price is actually quite reasonable considering batteries and chargers are backed by a solid 1 year warranty and good customer service. This seems to be a theme among Green Smoke Reviews on the internet, and nicotine cartridge price is also quite reasonable.

Anyway, there are few issues you will find in my Green Smoke Review, and overall its a good unit. I review too may electronic cigarettes to accurately gauge the longevity of the Green Smoke batteries, but the 1 year warranty and 30-day money back guarantee makes giving it a shot virtually risk-free so if you think Green Smoke is your choice then go for it!

Overall: 3.9 (above average)

Cartridge Rating = 3.5

The starter kit came with 5 tobacco flavored medium strength cartridges that each lasted almost as long as a real pack of cigarettes giving me about 200-250 puffs on average. Depending on your habits you may have a different experience.

There are eight flavors to choose from including chocolate, coffee, menthol, regular (tobacco), Marlboro, vanilla, apple and strawberry. All flavors are available in all 5 strengths (nice to see) which include 0mg, 4mg, 6mg, 8mg, and 16mg.

Note: I bought the 8 cartridge sampler pack (1 of each flavor) for my Green Smoke Review and I highly recommend it. The flavor and harshness varies by nicotine strength though, but it at least gives you a feel for all the flavors.

The nicotine hit is good, with a little less throat sensation from the smoother vapor. For this reason I suggest most just go with the 16mg strength. The directions say this is equivalent to an unfiltered cigarette. I think there is less taste and harshness is, and the nicotine hit is definitely NOT as intense as a real unfiltered cigarette.

Overall, Green Smoke e cig cartridges were great with most flavors having a good rich & smooth flavor lasting about as long or longer than most of the 2 piece e cigs out there. The only problem I experienced is that a few cartridges I tried seemed to have a very hard draw. This was more of a nuisance than anything, but not a deal breaker. Also, 2 piece e cig cartridges are harder to drip, and voids the warranty with Green Smoke anyway.

Stronger nicotine levels or a more refill friendly cartridge / policy would have improved the cartridge rating, but they are still above average.

Atomizer Rating = 4.5

The atomizer is built into the cartridges on this unit since it is a 2 piece design. This keeps maintenance to a minimum and also makes it the easiest to use. You simply remove the rubber covers from the cartridge and screw it onto the battery and you are ready to go.

Every time you replace a cartridge you replace the atomizer with a brand new fresh atomizer. You can easily switch between flavors without worry of on flavor bleeding into another because each cartridge has its own dedicated atomizer.

The 2 air holes that feed the atomizer are near the tip of the battery on this unit which is probably one factor that contributes to the medium to hard draw.

Other than that, the atomizer scores very high on this unit because of the inherit advantages of having the atomizer built into the replacement nicotine cartridges.

Vapor Production = 4.0

As stated previously the vapor I got from this product while working on my Green Smoke review was great. Based on sheer volume it is one of the best performers I have ever seen in this category.

Why didn’t I give it a 5 then? Well, this is because I did experience some inconsistency with the vapor production particularly near the end of a cartridge. The vapor really dwindled for the last 50 puffs or so. I was able to change the cartridge early to get back into vapor heaven as most people would probably do, but since I am reviewing the product I need to smoke the cartridges until the vapor is virtually non-existent or just plain unacceptable.

When the vapor dwindles towards the end I was able to take longer slower drags and also prime the atomizer on occasion to get perfectly acceptable vapor. It was just nowhere near the vapor you get with a fresh cartridge and a fully charged battery.

Batteries & Charger Rating = 4.0

By far, the best thing about the Green Smoke e cigarette battery though is the instant restart on the automatic cut-off switch. This allowed me to take a nice 3 second drag before the automatic cut-off would kick in and the lighted tip would dim. But, then I could keep dragging and the light would come right back on, almost instantly letting me take another 3 second drag and another and another… Hmm… Maybe this is why the vapor would dwindle on me towards the end of a cartridge.

Also, the charging indicators on the battery chargers were very clear and reliable with a single LED that would light red continuously while charging and then turn green when the battery is fully charged. The red LED on the AC wall adapter is only to indicate that the wall adapter has power.

This basic starter kit comes with 2 batteries: one regular capacity and one slightly longer high capacity battery. The regular capacity battery (when new) usually didn’t have a problem lasting until the cartridge was empty (200-250 puffs). The high capacity batter gave me between 25 and 50 more puffs.

The regular battery consistently took about 3 hours to charge while the high capacity battery takes about 4 hours whether plugging the USB charger into a computer or the AC wall adapter.

Green Smoke warns against overcharging their batteries so when the light on the USB charger turns green you should remove the battery from the charger as soon as possible and not leave the battery un-attended while charging.

I was very pleased with the battery and chargers while examining them for my Green Smoke review although they are a little pricey and slow to charge.

Overall the instant restart on the automatic cut-off and the simplicity / reliability of the batteries and chargers is where GreenSmoke stands out, but an option for a different color light on the tip would have improved the rating here.

Construction / Quality Rating = 4.0

Fit of the battery in the cartridge and the chargers is excellent, but not perfect. There was a teeny tiny amount of wobble in the “roll” test I do to check fit of battery into cartridge.

I didn’t have any batteries / cartridge / charger failures, but just some inconsistencies in the smoking experience between cartridges and batteries including varying draw, vapor and cartridge life.

The finish of the batteries is a durable semi-gloss with the fine gold banding / pin stripes going around the body that you see on a lot of 2 piece designs these days. The color of all of the flavor options seemed to complement the finish nicely.

Cost / Value Rating = 3.5

I actually bought this unit myself for this Green Smoke review (although GreenSmoke did offer to send me a free sample after the fact) so I can tell you first hand that it is not the cheapest, but it is also not the most expensive electronic cigarette I have seen either.

Overall I think Greensmoke does have an edge in performance and reliability that is reflected in the overall rating, and the price of the starter kit isn’t that bad considering. But, $50 each for extra batteries? I know these batteries are sophisticated and have a microchip in them, but so does a cheap wristwatch!

Sorry for my rant. It really isn’t warranted. Many other 2-piece e-cig vendors are selling extra batteries for $50 dollars or more and I have pondered the $50 battery question many times. Let me explain…

Green Smoke also offers a 1 year warranty which includes batteries. I haven’t seen many electronic cigarette batteries last longer than a year. Lithium ion batteries can typically only be charged about 300 times before performance becomes unacceptable. It isn’t that hard for an avid e cig smoker to charge a batter that many times is less than one year. So, e-cig companies that offer a 1 year warranty that also want to stay profitable need to plan on 1-2 warranty replacements of each battery.

Hopefully, Green Smoke is good about replacing batteries under warranty. I believe the will be considering the good experience I had with their customer service if you read the section I wrote on customer service. It’s actually somewhat nice to know that you don’t have to pay for batteries out of your pocket while yours are still under warranty.

Just be sure to use the 5% or 10% discount coupon / promo code if one is available.

Style and Extra Features

The GreenSmoke electronic cigarette simply looks very much like a regular cigarette so it will not change or affect your style much. The most notable difference is that their batteries have a light green plastic tips installed. The plastic is green when not lit yet lights up totally orange when you take a drag. I think this effect is kinda cool, but the green plastic tip will be a matter of preference to most people.

Green smoke shipped the original gray plastic “ash” tips with the starter kit I got, but you can’t switch them out. Trust me, I tried mainly for my Green Smoke review, but then I read somewhere that they aren’t meant to be removed, they are simply included in case a tip falls off and needs to be replaced. I can’t see them falling off though; they are glued on very securely.

I really like the dual Green Smoke electronic cigarette carrying case (sold separately) pictured above because with the basic starter kit you can fit 2 batteries and 3 cartridges. This is enough for almost 2 days of smoking with my habit!

Customer Service

While ordering the starter kit for this Green Smoke review, I found customer service to be extremely helpful and responsive. I had some trouble using a coupon code I found that I was sure was good, so I called and got a person on the phone right away.

They helped me with my problem (something I did) and then offered to take my order over the phone if I was still having trouble. I declined because I got the order to go through on-line. I then got a follow up phone call from them a couple hours later to ensure that I got an order confirmation e-mail and that I didn’t have any other problems, questions or needs.

They had no idea I was ordering their starter kit to write this review. Granted I don’t know if they would be as helpful if you needed to exchange one of those $50 batteries. . I hope so!

Pros:

Premium 2-piece “cartomizer” electronic cigarettes with long-lasting quickest-charge lithium polymer batteries. Also, has long lasting cartridges in a variety of flavors that deliver an intense throat sensation & nicotine hit.

Cons:

Premium means pricy starter kit and replacement batteries probably due to increased production costs of developing their cartridges, lithium polymer batteries and associated quick chargers.

Bottom Line:

White Cloud Cigarettes makes good on their promise of being a true premium electronic cigarette supplier that has improved on existing e cig technology delivering the longest lasting, fastest charging lithium polymer batteries, and longest lasting nicotine cartridges IF you can afford the start-up cost!

I just can’t emphasize enough that the batteries and cartridges do actually last longer with the White Cloud Cigarettes Cirrus starter kit. Many suppliers make these claims, but most of the time it is hard for me to tell the difference. It wasn’t until I tried White Cloud that I honestly believed the claims. Each regular flavor cartridge lasted almost as long as 2 packs of cigarettes for me. Despite the longevity of the cartridges the batteries had no problem keeping up lasting though 1 cartridge +20-50 more puffs after that yet, battery charging time was incredibly low averaging only about 60 minutes.

You can even buy a warranty card for $30 that will extend your warranty an additional year (2-years total coverage) and even puts you on a free battery exchange program for the second year.

All that being said, Whitecloud Cigarette starter kits and replacement batteries have a pricey startup cost. Cartridges are reasonable considering how long they last, but once you buy accessories and maybe some extra cartridges you will have made a significant investment.

Overall Rating: 3.8 (above average)

Cost: 3.0

Overall: 3.8 (Above Average)

Cartridge Rating = 4.0

The starter kit comes with 5 cartridges of different strengths and other than that cartridges are sold 5 to a pack. As I said before each cartridge lasts very long. I got 300+ puffs on average with each cartridge which means each cartridge is equal to 1.5-2 packs of cigarettes for me, but as always, your mileage may vary.

White Cloud has a good number of flavor options, but the more exotic flavors aren’t offered in all nicotine levels.

The flavor options include: Tobacco, Menthol, Vanilla, Chocolate, Espresso, Apple, Banana, Peach, Whisky, Clove. There is also a variety pack available if you would like to sample multiple flavors.

The nicotine levels range from: nicotine free (NF), ultra light (UL), light (L), full (F) and extra strength (X).

I don’t know the exact nicotine levels each strength is in terms of (mg), but judging by the very intense and satisfying nicotine hit and throat sensation I would venture to guess that extra strength (X) is 24mg and then they go down from there. Either that, or Whitecloud Cigarettes has done more with their cartridges than improve their life.

Whitecloud does not sell liquid nicotine solution for refilling / reusing cartridges nor do they permit it with any of their components stating that this practice, “voids any and all warranties.”

I would have given carts for this unit a higher rating, but dripping with a 2 piece is harder (and voids warranty in this case) AND there was one problem I discovered with the longer lasting design. Each time I opened and started smoking a new cartridge it seemed to take about 10-15 puffs before it would reach its full vapor potential.

I am thinking this small problem may be related to the silicone end-caps that White Cloud Cigarettes uses that I have never seen in a 2 piece design before. These end caps include a stopper that actually goes down into the “cartomizer” to further help keep it fresh and probably avoid leakage since they are jamming so much more juice into their cartridges. Overall, just a nuisance and small price to pay for the benefits received.

Atomizer Stopper In Middle of End Cap

Atomizer Rating = 4.0

The atomizer is built into this unit since it is a 2 piece so it is ultra low maintenance and extremely simple to use. Also, you replace the atomizer every time you replace a nicotine cartridge so you don’t have to worry as much about atomizers going bad and the extra expense of replacing atomizers regularly.

As an added benefit you can also switch flavors easily with this design and not have to worry about 2 flavors mixing on the same atomizer.

“Cartomizers” tend to rank higher in this category because of their inherent advantages, but I had to reduce the ranking for White Cloud electronic cigarettes atomizers slightly because I consistently had to do a primer puff to warm up the atomizer to get acceptable vapor every time I took a drag or series of drags. This is not un-common and by no means a deal killer, but it is obviously better if you don’t have to do it.

The atomizers in the cartridges are obviously durable though because I never had one die on me even though I got them very hot at times.

Batteries & Charger Rating = 4.5

The White Cloud e cig almost nails this category with their lithium polymer batteries and quick chargers. I can’t remember any previous e cig high capacity battery lasting longer or charging faster that Whitecloud. Also, the automatic cut-off, doesn’t kick in (with blinking tip) until like 8 or 9 seconds so very long drags are possible with the Cirrus.

Unfortunately I also can’t remember another e cig starter kit I have reviewed prior to White Cloud Cigarettes that didn’t come with an AC adapter. If it weren’t for that, White Cloud Cigarettes would have easily gotten a 5 in this category.

Cirrus batteries are a little large, but even other e cigarettes I have reviewed or tried with batteries the same size didn’t last this long and they would usually also take much longer (on the order of 4-5 hours) to charge.

The White Cloud e cigarette charger consistently recharged their high capacity lithium polymer batteries in only 50-70 minutes with all chargers (USB, AC & DC) depending on how run down they were. I would say they take 50 minutes to recharge if you only wait until vapor starts to dwindle due to low battery before charging and about 70 minutes if you keep using them until the tip blinks to indicate a low battery before charging.

Note: AC and DC chargers are not included with the starter kit, but were sent to me to review.

Finally, I also noticed that the Cirrus usually has a nice easy – medium draw, but* that the draw varies a little more than expected depending on which battery I was using. One of four batteries I was using actually had a medium to hard draw. This is not something I would necessarily rate down for because it is a matter of preference anyway, but just an observation of mine.

Vapor Production = 3.0

With the performance of every other aspect of this electronic cigarette I have to admit I was expecting a little more from the Cirrus in the vapor department. The vapor production was not bad, just average for a 2 piece design.

The volume of vapor also did not detract from the throat sensation or nicotine hit. In fact, it may be that more of the vapor gets absorbed into the body with this unit and that is what is responsible for the excellent nicotine hits.

Also, Cirrus consistently required at least one primer puff as well as at least a 4-5 second drag to reach get an acceptable amount of vapor. While testing the unit for this review I wondered if some of these attributes are a result of optimizing for cartridge and battery life.

Again, vapor production for me just helps simulate the smoking experience and helps me to forget that I am smoking an e cig so it is not a deal killer with this unit either, but if it is really important to you then you may want to consider it with Cirrus.

Construction / Quality Rating = 4.0

All of the components taken separately were all very high quality especially the batteries and chargers.. Also, I didn’t experience any atomizer failures or bad cartridges. There were just a few details that affected the rating.

Fit in terms of mating the cartridges with the batteries gave some resistance as if threads were not machined precisely. There was also a slight mis-alignment of the batteries and cartridges that manifested as a wobble in the “roll test” I do with all electronic cigarettes. This is not an uncommon problem, but I just expected a little more considering the quality of the components taken separately.

The finish of the batteries is a durable semi-gloss with the fine gold banding / pin stripes going around the body that you see a lot of 2 piece designs these days. The sheen on the cartridges is the same as the battery, but the color of the cartridges is stark white and a slight clash with the battery.

Cost / Value Rating = 3.0

It does seem White Cloud Cigarettes improved upon other 2 piece designs batteries and cartridges and this may have increased their production cost. But, whether or not the $189 price tag with $89 (lithium polymer) replacement batteries are worth it to you depends on what school of thought you subscribe to.

If you are one that expects to send your batteries back for replacements for 6mo. (2 yr if you bought the warranty card) then maybe it is worth it (rating 3.5 – 4). If you are one to just buy cheaper and lower quality batteries rather than deal with returns then you would probably expect a lower rating in this category (maybe a 2.5).

Unfortunately, I don’t use an e-cig long enough to speak to the longevity of the batteries, but in my experience most don’t last longer than about a three months with regular use. Maybe the lithium polymers are different?

The warranty card provides the purchaser with a free battery exchange starting at 12 mo. after original purchase date which makes me wonder what a person is to do for months 6-12, when the original battery warranty runs out. Hopefully, your batteries don’t have a problem in that 6 mo. period? Again I don’t use e-cigs long enough to have good input here. Maybe, another White Cloud Cigarettes user can comment?

For now, I am going to rate cost / value somewhere in the middle of the aforementioned values which is hard for me because I am the type of person that would rather find a decent battery and just order them every few months or so, or as I need them rather than be on a battery replacement program.

While the life is long, quality is great and nicotine hits are intense, the cost may be prohibitive to some and more appealing to those who are a stickler for the best quality and have low tolerance for problems.

Style and Extra Features

The Cirrus starter kit doesn’t really offer additional features and it is apparent that the focus is just on providing a solid vaping experience rather than freebees and bonuses.

Style-wise I like the fact that White Cloud offers your choice of blue and orange LED lights so that you can choose whether you want to stand out or blend in since aside from a blue lighted tip people will probably not be able to tell you are smoking an electronic cigarette.

That being said there are some great accessories that are NOT included with the starter kit that I suggest people check out and buy especially the AC adapter and one of their 2 carrying case. I would say a carrying case is really important to protect your investment if you buy Cirrus.

Customer Service

White Cloud Cigarette sent me almost their entire product line to review for free so I can’t comment on shipping times. I did search the forums though and I found zero complaints so far, but I do believe White Cloud is relatively new. I did find out that there are actually mall kiosks out there selling the product in my searches of the forums which usually seems to result in more complaints for some reason, but again no complaints found.

By some strange coincidence The Doctors TV show decided to demo ePuffer’s entire electronic cigarette line AGAIN right as I was working on my review of ePuffer’s EAZE Magnum Rev 2!

That’s right, this is the second time in little over a year that electronic cigarettes appeared on their show during the “Medical Emergencies You Can’t Ignore” episode that aired March 8th 2010.

I was here blogging about ePuffer’s debut on the Doctors TV show last year when The Doctors ranked electronic cigarettes #9 in their, “Top 10 Health Trends for 2009” episode.

In the 2010 episode though, Dr. Drew Ordon starts the segment by handing out all the, “e Products,” giving an ePuffer EZ Magnum to Dr. Lisa Masterson and the electronic pipe to Dr. Jim Sears.

Dr. Ordon first demonstrates the ePuffer “COHITA” electronic cigar himself by taking several large puffs and exhales the vapor confidently looking almost as if he was born with a cigar in his hand and remarks,

It creates a vapor instead of smoke and it’s the smoke that contains the tar and the other, what is it, 20 other carcinogens that are in cigarettes?

I don’t know Dr. Ordon. You tell me. You’re the Dr.!

Dr. Jim sears makes light of the demo gesticulating in a funny way with his “e Pipe” pondering what it would be like to smoke a pipe like Sherlock Holmes or another detective while solving crimes all day.

Don’t quit your day job to become either a detective OR actor Jimmy. I wasn’t convinced! Seriously though, I know you were just kidding..

Dr. Lisa Masterson takes another fake little puff off her EAZE Magnum similar to the tiny little puff she took off the COHITA e cigar last year in the 2009 episode.

Dr. Ordon finishes the demo by stating,

For some people, especially early on, this may be a good way to start [to quit smoking]

And, yes Dr. Ordon meant a good way to start quitting NOT to start smoking. It was just a little hard to hear him over the raucous Jim and Lisa was creating so I couldn’t transcribe the whole quote.

To conclude the segment Dr. Travis Stork finally chimes in at the end giving some solid advice,

All of these methods are ultimately ineffective if you don’t have a firm commitment, if you don’t have determination, or if you don’t have the will power.

Yup, we have all been there.

I didn’t actually catch this whole episode of the show, but I did manage to find the segment of video showcasing ePuffer products on the show’s web site. If you have another 5 min. to kill I highly suggest you head over there and check it out!

Also, be sure to check my full reviews of ePuffer’s COHITA electric cigar and their EAZE Magnum Rev 2 mini electronic cigarette model if you need more info on the ePuffer products.

If you are thinking about buying ePuffer products, be sure to also check out the inexpensive ePuffer “COHITA” disposable electric cigar review.

Pros:

Long lasting batteries and nicotine cartridges. Includes 1 mini and 1 high capacity battery. Good vapor production and throat sensation even 8mg cartridges. Valerian root cartridges are available for relaxation / sleep aid.

Cons:

Will set you back a few more $$$ than other models. The poorly documented charging system is confusing and I don’t think the wall charger works well.

Bottom Line:

The ePuffer EAZE Magnum Rev 2 (as seen on The. Drs. TV show) is a solid 2 piece mini electronic cigarette design with tons of flavor options and nicotine levels that attempts to improve on battery life and reliability, but suffers a bit in its overall rating from a lackluster wall charger.

I found that the Rev 2 version of the ePuffer EAZE Magnum does indeed improve on battery life lasting a little longer than other 2 piece mini’s out there. This will allow you to enjoy a very wide selection of 12 different cartridge flavors and 5 different nicotine levels for long periods of time. EPuffer also has a valerian root cartridge (non-nicotine) that costs a little more, but is supposed to encourage sleep and relaxation.

Despite paying ePuffer a little extra for battery and nicotine cartridge enhancements listed on the web site such as “high rate discharge” and “new nicotine pad material” I still had to use primer puffs to unleash the clouds of vapor that would be expected from such improvements. Also, as with many other e cigarettes out there, the various charging indicators were confusing, while the only use I got out of the instruction manual was entertainment.

I would recommend ePuffer for no other reason that it has been featured on The Drs. TV show twice now. I respect The Drs. for their positive attitude towards ePuffer and electronic cigarettes in general. Also, I can switch flavor cartridges every commercial break and never run out of flavors with ePuffer!

Overall Rating: 3.4 (Average)

Overall: 3.4 (average)

Cartridge Rating = 4.5

EPuffer has a ton of cartridge flavor options and levels for the EZ Magnum that were actually all in stock last time I checked.

EPuffer cartridge flavor options include: Premium Tobacco, Menthol, Mirabella, 555, Camilla, Chocolate, Coffee, Vanilla, Apple, Cherry, Strawberry and Valerian Root.

The nicotine levels include: 0mg, 4mg, 6mg, 8mg, and 16mg.

The only one that wasn’t in stock was extra strong (ES) menthol which I’m sure is only temporary since this flavor is always in high demand.

Although I didn’t get a chance to try it, the valerian root (non-nicotine $17.95 / pack) is an interesting option that is supposed to help with relation and sleeping. Though, I do find nicotine quite relaxing anyway.

Speaking of nicotine, I found the throat sensation and nicotine hit quite acceptable even with the 8mg cartridges which isn’t typical. Also, I didn’t experience one bad cartridge in the bunch that I tried. I don’t know whether this is because of the “new nicotine pad material,” or new “nicotine pad rolling technique,” ePuffer advertises on the website, but it was nice.

EPuffer cartridges are sold 5 to a pack and each one lasted fairly long. I got 150-200 puffs with each cartridge which means each cartridge is equal to about 1 pack of cigarettes for me, but as always, your mileage may vary.

The cartridges with this type of e cigarette are sealed so, while ePuffer does sell nicotine refill solution (predominately for its other models) it is difficult to “drip” refill this type of cartridge although not impossible.

I believe the EAZE Magnum would have aced the rating in this this category if they simply also had a 24mg nicotine level nicotine cartridge and if it were easier to drip this type of cartridge.

Atomizer Rating = 4.0

Since this is a 2 piece e cigarette also known as a “cartomizer,” the atomizer is built in to the nicotine cartridges and gets replaced with a fresh new atomizer every time you replace the nicotine cartridge.

This is not only convenient because it is low maintenance, but nice because there is a separate atomizer for each cartridge and therefore no mixing or tainting of the flavors between nicotine cartridges.

I can tell the atomizers in the ePuffer EAZE Magnum cartridges are very durable because they could withstand the primer puffs I would do that were getting the atomizer very hot. I never had an atomizer that was DOA, or that died on me while I was using it.

It hard to rate the atomizer without seeing it, and 2 piece design atomizers always rank high, because of their inherent advantages, but I have reduced the rating of the EAZE Magnum atomizer slightly because I suspect it was the atomizer contributing to the need for a primer puff every time I picked it up to get sufficient vapor production.

Batteries & Charger Rating = 2.5

The EAZE Magnum Rev 2 Deluxe kit includes a wall charger and 2 USB chargers (one USB charger plugs into wall charger) as well as a longer high capacity battery and a shorter more compact mini battery. Batteries are available with your choice of orange or blue lighted tip.

The Rev 2 batteries feature an automatic switch with an adequate cutoff time of 3 seconds. The light on the tip glows and dims realistically when taking a drag for those 3 seconds.

I always like it when it seems that a supplier like ePuffer is trying to improve upon the stock items of their product instead of simply re-branding them. Often times it works out. Sometimes it is problematic because robust engineering is required for anything that is mass produced.

In the case of EAZE Magnum’s Rev 2 batteries, I think ePuffer has a mixed bag of results.

First, I do think the batteries last a little longer than other 2 piece mini’s out there. I can’t be sure because I was only able to use the high capacity battery once and then it died never to work again. This may be my fault or it may be that the confusing charging indicators contributed to my mistake. Let me explain:

I first charged the high cap battery on the USB charger which has no charging indicator on it, so you have to watch the tip of the battery as an indicator which is lit while charging and goes out when charging is complete.

The second time I tried to charge the high cap battery using the wall charger which has an LED that goes from red to orange to green while the tip of the batter is also on the whole time. Well, I waited for the orange tip to also go off while smoking the mini battery. The problem is, the lighted tip never went off on the wall charger.

I left the high cap battery plugged in to the wall charger for 2 days and forgot about it. When I tried to use the high cap battery after 2 days it wouldn’t work anymore. I had to do the rest of the review with the shorter, more compact mini battery.

After that, I tried to charge the mini battery using the wall charger and made sure to remove it when the charging indicator on the wall charger turned green. In this situation, I was only able to get about 50 puffs from the mini battery, while I was used to getting about 100 puffs when charging the mini battery with the USB charger.

Next, I fully charged the mini battery with the USB charger to make sure it wasn’t damaged and sure enough I got 200 puffs again!

Finally, I tried charging the mini battery with the wall charger again to green and then put it on the USB charger to top it off. The USB charger then took about 3.5 hours to top off the battery making the wall charger almost worthless. Thank god the mini battery still worked after all of this!

So did I have a faulty high capacity battery? Faulty wall charger? Both? I don’t know and unfortunately, due to the growing popularity of this site and backlog of reviews I have to do, I don’t have time to test customer service and get replacements although I do believe they will stand behind their parts with their warranty.

Under normal circumstances, I got 200 puffs on the longer high capacity battery the one time I got to use it (despite the fact it is only 25% longer than the mini battery) and about 100 puffs on the fully charged mini battery.

Also, the mini battery took 4-5 hours to reach full charge on the USB charger and 2 hours to reach half charge (green LED comes on ) with the wall charger.

Because of the long battery life and option of having a blue LED I am only giving ePuffer a slight below average rating in this category because I believe I could return the faulty battery and the charger to ePuffer for replacements.

Vapor Production = 3.5

Vapor production with the Rev 2 of EAZE Magnum was very good, but I did have to prime the atomizer more than I would have expected with a, “high discharge rate” battery.

Also, the vapor production dwindled towards the last 25-50 puffs of a cartridge making me wonder if I should change cartridges / batteries etc.

That being said, I think the Rev 2 deserves a slightly above average rating in this category.

Construction / Quality Rating = 3.0

The fit of the batteries into the cartridges and charger threads is very good. As previously mentioned the quality of the wall charger is suspect and also noticeable in the way the USB adapter fits into it.

The finish of the batteries is a semi-gloss with the fine gold banding / pin stripes going around a lot of rebranded 2 piece designs you see these days.

Like most other 2 piece e cigarettes, the ePuffer cartridges are wrapped in paper which feels better in your mouth than plastic, but not really like a real cigarette because of the weight of the batteries which are likely enclosed in stainless steel tubes.

Cost Rating = 3.0

The cost of the EAZE Magnum and replacement parts (especially batteries) on the pricey side and it makes you wonder if they are letting the exposure from The Drs. TV show go to their head.

Actually, it seems ePuffer’s model is to charge extra for the batteries in order to offer a 6 month warranty on them.

When used frequently, no e cig battery lasts six months and you will probably be hard pressed to get 2 months out of a battery. So, if you replace a $50 battery 3 times in 6 months you will be making out OK, but you will have to go through ePuffer customer service to do it.

The volume pricing on the 5-pack of nicotine cartridges however, is VERY nice. The volume pricing kicks in at 5+ packs of cartridges and tops out at 25+ packs where you will only be paying $9.95 per pack of cartridges.

Also, the cost of replacing atomizers (another semi-consumable) is built into the cost of replacing nicotine solution cartridges which helps justify the cost since you will not have to worry about that with this 2 piece.

Style and Extra Features

The EAZE Magnum closely resembles a regular cigarette unless you opt for the blue LED tip option. Some cartridges (like vanilla) are stark white in color and clash with the semi-gloss gold banded finish of the battery, but all other cartridge colors look great, just like a regular cigarette.

EPuffer is also offering a felt / velour pouch as an added bonus (limited time?) which is nice and keeps the batteries from getting dinged up to the point where you can see the steel tube underneath.

Customer Service

My search of the forums returned absolutely 0 customer service complaints for ePuffer which is almost strange in a way. Usually there is at least one or two if not from actual customers from competitor trolling around which are easy to pick out.

This could be because ePuffer doesn’t sell the same volume as the others out there, or maybe it’s because they really are just that good with their customer service. It makes me kinda sad that I didn’t use a perfectly good opportunity to return my battery and charger to see what they do about it.

Overall Review Rating = 3.4 (average)

I figured it out.. I think I know why so many anti-smoke / tobacco oppose e cigarettes. It’s because at some point in history these zealots must have lost a previous battle because kids can still buy candy cigarettes!

That’s right. Check it out.

I was in a store the other day and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I spotted advertising for “retro-candy” on the checkout isle which included a large box of candy cigarettes!

I immediately snapped a picture with my iPhone for this article.

I am not going to say the name of the store, because if I did you probably haven’t heard of them anyway.

I mean, they are such a small store that no one has heard of and can probably afford to do this sort of thing with no worries. I will just say that it was a craft store that that starts with the letter, “Michaels.”

I know some of you must be thinking, “c-mon, everyone knows you can still buy candy cigarettes. What’s the big deal?”

Well, when you spend as much time as I do in a week analyzing arguments and proposed legislation against electronic cigarettes you realize that probably one of the top 3 arguments against them is the potential risk that they pose towards kids.

There are several variations of this argument ALWAYS cited without a shred of evidence or proof in the form of actual research because it doesn’t exist:

available candy and fruit e cig flavors must be targeting children

selling e cigs in malls is obviously targeting children

e cigarettes could be a “gateway” to actual cigarette and tobacco use

And, while the vast majority of e cig distributors do NOT sell e cigarettes to minors, a couple companies have been busted doing just that creating a disproportionate amount of bad press.

Don’t get me wrong. I know kids are extremely impressionable.

Oddly enough though I rarely hear anyone argue that it’s is the responsibility of each and every individual to set a good example for ALL of the children in their lives because they are so impressionable.

Instead, business is painted as bad by the media and the negativity fuels the presses satisfying some. This is really immature when you think about it.

I started this article suggesting that there surely must have been an epic battle to ban candy cigarettes considering the reaction people have been having to electronic cigarettes. Well, I did some admittedly lame research using Wikipedia and Google and here is what I found:

First there was no epic battle of any sort in the U.S. according to Wikipedia. To this day candy cigarettes remain legal in the U.S. and are out there on some store shelves in plain view for kids and parents to see. The only interesting thing I learned from the Wiki is that candy cigarettes are called “sugar fags” in the UK.

On a side note I have heard my brothers-from-other-mothers across the Atlantic call electronic cigarettes “faux fags.” Even better!

The Wiki goes on to say that apparently a federal ban was considered in the U.S. as far back as 1970 and then again in 1991, but it was NOT passed. Also, candy cigarettes were actually banned in North Dakota from 1953-1967. Pretty boring stuff…

But, if you use Wikipedia as a measure of importance or controversy though (i.e. longer articles = more info = more important, or more controversial) then “candy cigarettes” barely registers on the scale with a Wikipedia article approximately 215 words long with 4 references. This blog post / rant is twice that already!

Compare this to the Wikipedia entry on “electronic cigarettes” with approximately 2,567 words and 32 references or the Wikipedia on “cigarettes” with a whopping 4,159 and 56 references at the time of writing this.

After noticing this trend in Wikipedia I tried Google to see if I could find any news on proposed candy cigarette bans and wouldn’t you know I actually did find a few?

I could tell just by looking at the search results though that the campaigns were nowhere near as popular as campaigns and stories regarding electronic cigarettes. But, how could this be quantified?

To try to quantify any indication of the “popularity” of an idea on Google I searched 2 term and looked at the number of results returned. I tried searching Google for “ban candy cigarettes” and “ban electronic cigarettes” in quotes and here is what I found:

"Ban Candy Cigarettes" (Click to Enlarge)

"Ban Electronic Cigarettes" (Click to Enlarge)

Google indicates there are about 11,000 results for “ban candy cigarettes” and about 1,020,000 results for “ban electronic cigarettes!” If you are buying into my ridiculous method this means that the idea of banning electronic cigarettes is almost 100 times more popular than banning candy cigarettes.

Why is this?

I’m sure it’s because of the small minority of e cigarette suppliers are moving their tacky kiosks into malls everywhere. Parents and do-gooders see this as an attack on kids and morality and rightly so.

Something must be done quickly to “save the children” before any research has a chance to prove or disprove a link between e cigarettes and actual cigarette use because some mall owners out there are too greedy, tacky or lacking in morals to reject applications for e cigarette kiosk leases.

Similar to the impetus of gun control laws, people want to attack and control the thing (guns, e cigarette) instead of confronting the people responsible and holding them accountable. Attacking the thing is easier and less confrontational.

This is a shame too, because there IS actually a study referenced in that Wikipedia entry on candy cigarettes linking candy cigarettes to real cigarette use authored by Jonathan Klein at the University of Rochester and published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 2000.

This research surveyed 25,000+ Americans and found that 22 percent of smokers played with and consumed candy cigarettes while only 14 percent of non-smokers played with and consumed the candy.

I am not a scientist so I cannot judge whether these results are valid or significant for their sample size etc. My wife is the PhD with a background in research and she is shaking her head no and mumbling something I don’t understand about “effect size.”

But, since when has the mass media or politicians cared about that? They should be all over this.

Am, I saying I support a ban on candy cigarettes? No. I think the last thing this country needs is more useless laws. If we spent half our time and money promoting good morals and ethics in this country instead of trying to create a law to govern every aspect of our life we would all be better off.

Its bad enough I have to waste my time writing this.

Common sense tells you that stores shouldn’t sell candy cigarettes and most don’t anyway. It’s just not worth it.

If there is actually a market for candy cigarettes in a demographic that a store serves, they should be sold discretely behind a counter and not to kids.

Businesses should police themselves using a moral compass and not some self appointed ethics police. I have heard Wal-Mart is actually setting a good example in this area and does not sell products that simulate cigarettes or tobacco like candy cigarettes and Big League Chew.

Do I think it’s OK to smoke electronic cigarettes around kids? My opinion is no. Kids are extraordinarily impressionable.

I will not tell anyone how to raise their kids, but I will suggest that people should not smoke electronic cigarettes OR regular cigarettes around their kids AND other people’s kids as well.

I will also suggest that people don’t smoke, drink, cuss, lose their temper, or exhibit any behavior they don’t want their children duplicating later in life.

I just can’t wait for the next politician or mis-informed media personality to propose a ban on electronic cigarettes because of the risk they may pose to children. If their proposal doesn’t also include a ban on candy cigarettes, I will call them out every chance I get.

Today’s post will explain how to use the scotch tape mod to improve e cig vapor production. This mod also increases how hard it is to take a drag which can be a benefit in some situations as you will read later in the article.

First I would like to go over a few situations in which the quality of your vapor is important.

Why is Good e Cig Vapor Important

There are a few reasons you may be looking to improve, increase, or otherwise enhance your e cig vapor or “smoke” production. These reasons range from the practical to the totally impractical and even irrational.

One arguably impractical reason for being able to produce thick clouds of e cig vapor is that it may be a good way to impress skeptical friends who have never seen or heard of the devices. Among veteran e-smokers, e cig vapor production is even a status symbol these days.

Once you get used to smoking electronic cigarettes there is almost nothing more satisfying than exhaling a nice big thick, copious cloud of vapor except maybe blowing a few smoke rings!

There are more practical reasons for wanting to improve e cig vapor production other than it is just so darn satisfying though. Nicotine cravings need to be satisfied too and since the vapor is what carries the nicotine to the tissues in the back of your throat and lungs it is essential for vapor to be the right consistency.

Also, sometimes variations in hardware quality such as atomizers and batteries or nicotine solution being used to top off or completely refill cartridges can affect your e cig vapor as well so you may occasionally need a way to tweak or increase the vapor.

The Scotch Tape e Cig Mod

Enter the scotch tape mod. I remember when I started smoking electronic cigarettes almost 2 years ago now. The scotch tape mod was the first mod in the wonderful world of electronic cigarette “modding” I was introduced to as I watched YouTube videos one night. Unfortunately I can’t remember who it was that made that video to give them credit, but I thought it was pretty cool that he was able to double his vapor production in just minutes simply by using plain old scotch tape.

As it turned out, my first electronic cigarette was producing excellent vapor at the time and it wasn’t until later after I started trying other models and doing reviews that I decided to test the mod out.

If you read my latest review of Smoke51’s “Krave” disposable e cigarette, you know I recently found another use for the scotch tape mod other than improving vapor production. During the Krave review I noticed that the automatic pressure sensitive switch became quite stubborn after a few puffs. In fact, I was having a very hard time getting the battery to juice the atomizer no matter how hard I took a drag.

I wasn’t able to determine whether this was a design problem or just a defective battery, but I really wanted to finish the review because the first couple drags off the Krave were really good.

The Smoke51 Krave comes with a surprisingly high quality 4-hole atomizer for a disposable 3 piece unit. I theorized that since a higher number holes in the atomizer makes the draw easier, that if I had fewer holes then the draw would be harder and therefore the pressure exerted on the battery’s pressure switch would be greater and might energize the battery.

It turns out I was right.

To implement the scotch tape mod you simply use clear tape to cover one or more of the atomizer’s intake holes. I have included a couple pictures and a couple notes to follow as a more detain illustration of how to implement this mod.

At the end I explain why Krave is ideally suited for this mod as well as a couple reasons why the this mod actually SUCKS at times.

How to Implement the Scotch Tape e Cig Mod

Supplies Needed for e Cig Mod

Supplies Needed: Scotch tape (or any kind of cellophane packing tape), 3-piece electronic cigarette (or any type of ecig with atomizer holes near the mouth piece), pin or needle.

3-piece with Holes Next to Mouth-Piece (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

Up to 3 Holes to Be Covered (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

Notice how this atomizer has four holes. Before taping over them, screw the atomizer and cartridge back onto the battery.

Note Placement of Scotch Tape (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

With the atomizer screwed into the batter apply tape as shown in this picture. Notice that the Krave has a little extra white body to it toward where you push the cartridge on. If your 3-piece model doesn’t have this then just apply the tape to both the battery and the cartridge. YES, this means the cartridge will be taped on, and you will need to take the tape off to change the cartridge or drip.

Press FIRMLY all around the tape once it is applied to make sure you have a good air-tight seal.

Poke the Hole! (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

Use the point of a needle or pin to poke a hole through the tape to open at least one of the atomizer holes. IMPORTANT AND OBVIOUS: You must use the needle to create at least one atomizer hole!

Poke 1 Hole at a Time (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

Poke only one hole at a time, testing your vapor production between each hole poked by taking a few drags.

Leave 1 Or More Holes Covered (CLICK TO ENLARGE)

You will end up with some holes covered and some with holes that will allow the air to flow into the intake. For the Krave, I had to leave 3 holes covered to activate the pressure switch reliably which gave me a really hard draw, but also incredible vapor!

Why the Scotch Tape Mod SUCKS Sometimes

There are a couple reasons why this modification kinda stinks and why I don’t use it on a regular basis.

The biggest headache you are likely to encounter is that you will need to remove the tape in order to change cartridges and batteries.

If you are using higher quality tape this may not be an issue, but if you are just using whatever you have around the house it can sometimes be a PAIN to remove the tape because the holes poked in the tape cause it to peel off in small pieces and thin strips. This takes time and is a huge inconvenience.

As it turns out, the Krave disposable model is ideally suited for this modification because you don’t have to remove the scotch tape at all. If you study the first and fourth pictures in this article closely you will notice the placement of the tape doesn’t need to come in contact with the cartridge at all.

Since the KRAVE is a disposable and you don’t need to re-charge or change batteries, the tape never needs to come off!

Depending on circumstances, you will probably need to remove the tape eventually.

Other drawbacks of this mod include the atomizer getting hotter than normal and using cartridges / nicotine solution faster. These are both things you want in a way and are actually required to increase e cig vapor production, but if the atomizer isn’t sturdy enough it will burn out faster than normal and replacing atomizers and using cartridges at a higher rate will obviously cost more.

This is the price to you pay sometimes for good vapor!

So I hope this modification helps a few folks out there looking to optimize their e cig vapor. Please comment with questions or any other suggestions you have for modding electronic cigarettes.

Today’s post will explain how to use the so-called scotch tape mod to improve e cig vapor production.

[insert pic of needed supplies]

Supplies: Scotch tape (or any kind of cellophane packing tape), 3-piece electronic cigarette (or any type of ecig with atomizer holes near the mouth piece), pin or needle.

[insert pic of krave with arrow pointed to hole near mouthpiece]

[insert pic of atomizer and cart with arrows pointing to the 4 holes]

Notice how this atomizer has four holes. Before taping over them, screw the atomizer and cartridge back onto the battery.

[insert pic of taping the e cig here]

With the atomizer screwed into the batter apply tape as shown in this picture. Notice that the Krave has a little extra white body to it toward where you push the cartridge on. If your 3-piece model doesn’t have this then just apply the tape to both the battery and the cartridge. YES, this means the cartridge will be taped on, and you will need to take the tape off to change the cartridge or drip.

Press FIRMLY all around the tape once it is applied to make sure you have a good air-tight seal.

[insert needle pic]

Use the point of a needle or pin to poke a hole through the tape to open at least one of the atomizer holes. IMPORTANT AND OBVIOUS: You must use the needle to create at least one atomizer hold!

[Insert pic of hole poked]

Poke only one hole at a time, testing your vapor production between each hole poked by taking a few drags.

[insert picture showing one hole poked and one hole covered]

Smoke 51 Review Summary:

The Smoke 51 Krave is a disposable 3 piece electronic cigarette that has loads of potential and would be great if it weren’t for a cumbersome issue with the battery that requires a modification to get it to work correctly if at all.

I may have gotten a unit with a defective battery switch which is a huge shame. I ordered the cherry flavor and when the battery switch actually worked the Krave produced very thick great tasting vapor which gave me a good tingling in the back of my throat just like a real cigarette.

At first I thought it just took a very hard draw to turn the battery on, but after several puffs I started having a hard time getting the battery to turn on at all. I was able to employ the “scotch tape mod” to cover 3 of 4 atomizer holes to salvage my purchase and finish all 4 replacement cartridges for my first Smoke 51 review.

The scotch tape mod on this model was not as annoying as it usually is because I didn’t have to remove the tape to change batteries or cartridges due to the fact that this unit has a disposable battery and a little extra body to the atomizer.

Since Smoke 51 ships product very fast I still think Krave is still good for a first timer’s experiment using electronic cigarettes (with 30% discount code) because the vapor is great tasting and effective at satisfying nicotine cravings. Also, some first timers may actually find an early introduction to e cig “modding” appealing.

Smoke 51 Review – Krave Breakdown:

Cartridge Rating = 4.0

The four cartridges that come with this disposable are very “juicy” and are double sealed first with a rubber stopper and then a blister pack (like OTC pills or chewing gum) which is good for maintaining freshness. The reservoirs in the cartridges are very deep for a mini e-cig, but a little narrow so I had to poke and adjust the poly-fill on a couple of them to get to all the nicotine solution.

I think Smoke 51 Krave was shooting to last as long as 1 pack of cigarettes since the Krave box even resembles a pack of cigarettes. Each of the 4 refill cartridges lasted about 50-60 puffs so I think overall 4 refill cartridges lasted me almost as long as a whole pack of regular cigarettes. As always, your mileage may vary.

Krave is also available in 3 flavors (regular, menthol and cherry) which is not common in a disposable model, although cherry might go away soon if the FDA begins regulating electronic cigarettes the same way they do regular cigarettes.

Finally, the good “throat hit” is mainly due to a high concentration in the nicotine cartridges which I couldn’t find listed anywhere, but I estimate it is 18mg or maybe even a little more.

Atomizer Rating = 4.5

The atomizer that comes boxed with the Krave disposable electronic cigarette is a very high quality 4 hole shiny body atomizer with brass plated copper electrical connections. The wicking is very thick and sturdy.

Some reusable 3-piece electronic cigarettes don’t ship with atomizers this good.

It’s a shame I had to cover 3 of the 4 holes of the atomizer with scotch tape (scotch tape mod) because the battery switch was not sensitive enough. After covering 3 holes the draw through the atomizer is hard which means harder than a regular cigarette.

Battery Rating = 2.0

OK, you have already heard me go off about the battery switch on this thing and the mod to get it working, so I am going to try not to mention it anymore. After all, I may have just gotten a defective battery.

I did actually give the battery a 2.0 rating instead of a 1 for a couple of reasons however.

First, the battery did actually ship with a good charge that lasted through my debugging of the switch problem and all 4 cartridges producing good vapor the whole time.

Second, there was no automatic cutoff when taking a draw. In other words, once the battery was turned on you could take as long of a drag as you want. For many people this is preferred because the experience is closer to a real cigarette than the 2-5 second automatic cut-off time with some models and I rate higher for it.

Some people prefer the automatic cut off to ensure they don’t overheat the atomizer or burn the poly-fill if the wicking action breaks down.

Finally, the last thing I noticed about the battery is that once you stopped taking a drag it kept the atomizer and the lighted tip on for about 2 seconds before turning off. This will make it burn through the cartridges faster and reduce wicking for the next puff.

Vapor Production = 4.0

As I said in the summary, probably the best thing I noticed about Krave while doing my first Smoke 51 review is the thick, concentrated and rich tasting vapor. The taste was very close to a regular cigarette.

It was hard to determine if the excellent vapor was due to the scotch tape mod, which is usually employed to increase vapor production or the overall quality of the other components.

Construction / Quality = 3

Ok, I admit. I dinged the quality rating for the battery switch problem because it is the right thing to do. There is no excuse for not testing batteries because it’s not hard and the machinery needed to do shouldn’t be complicated.

Anyway, the only other thing I noticed lacking in the construction quality was the un-matching finish between the replacement cartridges and the battery / atomizer. The battery and atomizer have a semi-gloss finish while the replacement cartridges have a matte finish and the difference is noticeable.

Other than that the cartridges and atomizers are very high quality and the fit of the components as a unit was near perfect with the cartridges being a little loose for my taste but this didn’t cause an issue.

Cost / Value Rating = 2.5

Even with the quality of the components used in this unit it is expensive compared to other disposables in my opinion unless, of course, you use the 30% discount code.

With the code I would say it’s a good value if you could be 100% sure that the battery switch will work. If you need to use the scotch tape mod, you don’t need to take the scotch tape off at all once applied though.

If I get a enough emails from folks saying they didn’t have the same experience I did I promise I will revise this whole review because seriously, the individual components are pretty high quality for a disposable and justify a $20 spot (with the 30% discount code).

Style and Extra Features:

The biggest thing that stuck out to me was the packaging. The whole reason I picked the Krave for my first Smoke 51 review over the Duo or the Trio sitting right next to it was because of the colorful cellophane covered box that looked somewhat like a pack a cigarettes. I have seen this online with other brands before, but this is the first time I have had a chance to review it.

Aside from the packaging this unit is a fairly generic branded 3-piece mini e-cig. There are some fairly fine gold banding lines around the battery up to the branded logo that says “KRAVE” and the brass band from the atomizer and battery fittings give it a classic style that makes it look pretty much like a regular cigarette. It will not stick out too much in public and draw too much attention which may be what you want.

Customer Service:

Shipping was very fast for me. It took me only 4 days with the cheapest shipping option to get all of my Smoke 51 products from the day I ordered it.

I searched the forums in preparation for my Smoke 51 review and didn’t find any major complaints with most customers seeming satisfied. There were a few mentions of people having un-authorized credit card charges from the company, but I didn’t have that problem and sometimes people get Smoking Anywere Inc., vendors of Krave, confused with Smoking Everywhere Everywhere Inc. which is notorious for “free-trials” that come with un-authorized credit card charges.

I guess I should have tried the customer service out a little more given that there is a possibility that I got a defective unit.

The reason I didn’t contact customer service myself (other than I hate dealing with customer service) is because while Smoke 51 starter kits (Duo / Trio) say they come with a lifetime warranty and no money back guarantee, I couldn’t find any warranty info on Krave for this Smoke 51 review.

I figured it didn’t really make sense for a disposable unit anyway and if I couldn’t address the issue (with the mod) then it wasn’t worth people’s time for the purposes they would buy a disposable unit.
