It's never too soon for children to start learning a second language. As long as they have a passionate teacher, supportive parents, a love for that language or culture and can learn their own language, children can quickly and easily learn a second one.

This year, Education Week's theme is languages, which draws on Melbourne's multicultural community, where more than 200 languages are spoken and more than 40 per cent of people have a parent born overseas.

From May 19 to 25, the importance and lifelong benefits of children learning another language will be highlighted in our schools.
Learning a second language improves literacy, brain development, social competence and the way kids view other cultures and the world. Language is a window into how other cultures interpret elements such as art and what they see as important, says Dr Russell Cross, senior lecturer in language and literacy education at Melbourne University's Graduate School of Education.

"Once you start to speak another language, you understand different ways of being and relating," Dr Cross said. "It opens your eyes up to new ways of thinking. Children get a sense of achievement when they learn another language and communicate in it. This helps with self-esteem, sense of accomplishment and development — not just a mark on a test. It becomes a social skill."
Pina Dunne, languages co-ordinator at St Monica's College in Epping, says the ability to communicate in a second language transcends oral exams and boosts students' self-esteem and confidence in job interview performance and other social engagements. She says children with a second language are better problem solvers because they are learning to code and decode and have a number of solutions to a problem rather than just one.
"Students of a second language will tackle a problem differently to those with one language because they can look at it from different angles," Dunne says.
Selecting a language can be problematic, but while Dr Cross believes most languages are no more difficult to learn than others, it comes down to how the learner uses the language and how it is taught.

However, Dunne says Italian is regarded as one of the easiest as it has words that sound and mean the same in English. Both agree that character languages, such as Chinese and Japanese, are the most difficult as they have a different alphabet and different vocabularies, grammatical structures and tones.
Often, learning happens when a student uses the new language to buy a book or play a game without even thinking about it.

The colours aren't as vibrant as an LCD screen's, obviously, but it's hard not to be impressed by the fact of their existence. It's a little like looking at the future of e-Readers, only you can buy it today.

Admittedly, that statement only applies if you have £500 to spend on a glorified Kindle which is too large to hold properly, but the jetBook Color 2 isn't aimed at novel-readers. Instead, it's aimed at businesspeople and academics who might find the colours useful in the context of textbooks and business documents. The supporting apps - graphing software, calculators, and the like - reinforce its position as a specialist device, and that in turn makes its specialist price forgivable.

The Deluxe version comes with a custom active stylus called the C-Pen, which you can use to scan printed text, uploading it directly to the device. Perfect for hanging onto reference material. You can even use built-in translation tools to convert it between languages. It also supports freehand note-taking and text-to-speech. Now-familiar features include 2GB of onboard storage and a microSD slot.

It's tough to call the jetBook Color 2 a device worth considering in any definitive way. It's obviously expensive, and its features mean it competes more with the likes of the iPad and the Nexus tabletsº. In such a scenario, it comes off looking like a slower, neutered version of both - effectively what a tablet PC would look like if it had been made in the 1980s. However, by doing something different, Ectaco at least has the right idea. It's not trying to take on Amazon, and that means it's free to dominate its particular niche.

Perhaps in the UK we underestimate the importance of languages. The truth is, being able to speak a foreign language looks good alongside any subject or degree. For many, the fall in the number of young people studying languages is one of the worst legacies of New Labour, and a trend which must be reversed. Although English remains the main language for business and diplomacy in the world today, assuming that we can afford not to learn languages because everyone else can speak English is naive. There are hundreds of thousands of European students who are proficient in English, and often even a second language, but a much smaller number of young people here can claim to have such skills. In the future, this may put some UK workers in more competition for jobs internationally. The importance of conflict resolution and disaster aid in the world today shows how many organisations and government agencies have an international focus; they are working to solve global problems across borders. Likewise, transnational corporations are building on the work of the past few decades and are also expanding their worldwide markets to developing nations.
