The first crucialelement in beginning to learn a language is motivation.
Speaking a foreign language is not easy. It requires hard work. That is not to say that it is not fun. If done the right way learning a language is exceedingly enjoyable.

1. Write down the reasons why you are learning English.
Why are you learning English language and not another one. Write down as many reasons as you can. Maybe you get the good job. You want to read English books, websites, magazines, watch English TV, travel abroad.... Are you 100% sure that you are ready to invest the energy, finances and most significant the time that it takes to learn a English. If no, please take some time to think things through. It is often easier to change way in the beginning.

2. See it as hobby.
Enjoy it. Make it as enjoyable as possible. You can also use multilanguage translator on-line. Get enthusiasm for language. Do not limit yourself to textbooks. Immerse yourself into the world of that language, if you really want to study a English you need to talk, walk and breath in that language!

3. Study periodically.
Studying every day, or at least several times a week.

4. Be patient.

5. Learning with others.

9. Grammar is essential.
There are dozens theories on how to best learn a language but they all include someway or another the acquiring the internal logic of that language, otherwise knows as its rules of grammar. Studying directly and wholly from a grammar book may not be the best style to accomplish results. Instead make sure you have a solid textbook + grammar book that is used as a way of reference and not as the primary literature.

Want to protect against the effects of Alzheimer's? Learn another language.
That's the takeaway from recent brain research, which shows that bilingual people's brains function better and for longer after developing the disease.

Psychologist Ellen Bialystok and her colleagues at York University in Toronto recently tested about 450 patients who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Half of these patients were bilingual, and half spoke only one language.

While all the patients had similar levels of cognitive impairment, the researchers found that those who were bilingual had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's about four years later, on average, than those who spoke just one language. And the bilingual people reported their symptoms had begun about five years later than those who spoke only one language.

"What we've been able to show is that in these patients... all of whom have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and are all at the same level of impairment, the bilinguals on average are four to five years older -- which means that they've been able to cope with the disease," Bialystok said.

She presented her findings today (Feb. 18) here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Some results of this research were published in the Nov. 9, 2010 issue of the journal Neurology.
CT brain scans of the Alzheimer's patients showed that, among patients who are functioning at the same level, those who are bilingual have more advanced brain deterioration than those who spoke just one language. But this difference wasn't apparent from the patients' behaviors, or their abilities to function. The bilingual people acted like monolingual patients whose disease was less advanced.

"Once the disease begins to compromise this region of the brain, bilinguals can continue to function," Bialystok said. "Bilingualism is protecting older adults, even after Alzheimer's disease is beginning to affect cognitive function."

The researchers think this protection stems from brain differences between those speak one language and those who speak more than one. In particular, studies show bilingual people exercise a brain network called the executive control system more. The executive control system involves parts of the prefrontal cortex and other brain areas, and is the basis of our ability to think in complex ways, Bialystok said. "It's the most important part of your mind," she said. "It controls attention and everything we think of as uniquely human thought."

Bilingual people, the theory goes, constantly have to exercise this brain system to prevent their two languages from interfering with one another. Their brains must sort through multiple options for each word, switch back and forth between the two languages, and keep everything straight.

And all this work seems to confer a cognitive benefit -- an ability to cope when the going gets tough and the brain is besieged with a disease such as Alzheimer's.

"It's not that being bilingual prevents the disease," Bialystok told MyHealthNewsDaily. Instead, she explained, it allows those who develop Alzheimer's to deal with it better.

Moreover, other research suggests that these benefits of bilingualism apply not only to those who are raised from birth speaking a second language, but also to people who take up a foreign tongue later in life.

"The evidence that we have is not only with very early bilinguals," said psychologist Teresa Bajo of the University of Granada in Spain, who was not involved in Bialystok's research. US company ECTACO Inc. will supply to the Interior Ministry of Ukraine 1,500 talking multilingual language communicators and electronic translators for the upcoming finals of the Euro 2012 European Football Championship.

According to the company, Ukrainian policemen will receive a special model of the iTRAVL talking multilingual language communicators designed for security forces employees and similar to those used during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

It supports Russian, Ukrainian, English, Spanish, Italian, German, Polish, Portuguese and French. In addition, the device includes speech recognition, as well as built-in language learning program.

ECTACO said that the Ukrainian police tested the device in February 2011.

The ECTACO iTRAVL features support for Russian, Ukrainian, English, Spanish, Italian, German, Polish, Portuguese and French; an audio phrasebook recognizing human speech and providing translation for 14,000 phrases; a voice enabled interface with vocal commands intended for extreme conditions, when, for instance, a large number of fans speaking different languages must be directed from one section of the stadium to another; and the Language Teacher application, which helps to obtain basic language skills in a short time.

The device has been subject to tests since February 2011 by Ukrainian police force. Participants have highly awarded the easy to use interface and effectiveness of the iTRAVL when communicating with people who speak a different language. "It's possible to learn a language, if you can devote 5-6 hours a day to studying," states Colonel Vladimir Salimskiy, Deputy Executive to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. "In such cases, it is possible to reach a bearable level of understanding within 6 months. But with this device... you just point at the language tab, and you're ready to start a conversation."

The translator is capable of providing instant translation for basic level communication between the hosts and visitors from all over Europe. This will make everyone's stay more comfortable and be of great help in avoiding crucial misunderstanding between police and soccer fans during the championship games.

I think the key reason we want to raise our kids trilingual is so they can communicate with their extended families and understand their cultural heritage. I can’t imagine taking them to see their grandparents in Mexico and not be able to communicate to them. To me that is a tragedy. This was really reinforced when my brother (who speaks English, French, Spanish, Italian and Guarani!) had children and was pressured out of speaking French to his son by their pediatrician. I found it so sad at family gatherings that they couldn’t understand what was going on when we spoke with their grandmother or when I spoke to my daughter. On a personal level, my multilingualism is such an important part of who I am, I can’t imagine not sharing that with my girls. On a deeper level, I think multilingualism fosters greater understanding and acceptance of other cultures and people and in an ever-shrinking crowded world, that can only be a good thing..."

It can take hard work to reach a good standard and then there is the challenge of maintaining that level of proficiency. But there is no reason why you should not enjoy and succeed in learning languages like Hindustani or Chinese. Even though people are all different - they learn at different speed levels and have different pronunciation - they tend to be best when it comes to learning and to communicating. Le ministre de l'Education nationale Luc Chatel, qui estime que le niveau d'anglais des Français est une "faiblesse", a installé lundi un comité stratégique des langues, présidé par l'angliciste Suzy Halimi, présidente honoraire de Paris-3, selon un communiqué du ministère.

Ce comité, qui compte 17 membres, dont des professeurs en langues, des inspecteurs, le sénateur Jacques Legendre (UMP, Nord), comprend également deux présidents d'honneur, Claude Bébéar, président de l'Institut Montaigne, ainsi que Claude Hagège, professeur au Collège de France.
Il devra remettre au ministre un rapport d'étape au mois d'octobre, un rapport définitif à la fin de l'année 2011, "en vue de propositions à la rentrée 2012", selon la lettre de mission de Mme Halimi.

Le comité devra se "pencher sur la progression de l'apprentissage des langues vivantes, de l'école maternelle au baccalauréat et sur d'éventuelles modifications de la répartition du volume horaire à chacun de ces niveaux afin de gagner en efficacité".

"La pratique de l'oral, la place des outils numériques et le rôle des innovations" entre autres feront "l'objet de préconisations particulières", selon cette lettre, de même que "la mobilité des jeunes et des enseignants (échanges)".
Autre axe d'étude: "la présence des langues de la mondialisation dans notre enseignement".

"Les dernières enquêtes internationales démontrent que malgré des progrès, les résultats de nos élèves peuvent être encore améliorés", écrit le ministre dans cette lettre.

Lundi matin, sur i-télé, le ministre avait déclaré: "C'est effectivement une vraie faiblesse de notre pays, nous ne sommes pas bons en anglais".

"Ce n'est pas le problème du nombre d'heures", a-t-il estimé. "Le sujet, c'est de savoir (...) comment on les répartit tout au long de la scolarité", a-t-il ajouté.
"Aujourd'hui on a des progrès considérables, vous pouvez avoir des locuteurs natifs en visio-conférence dans des salles de cours, ou (...) vous pouvez sensibiliser dès la maternelle à partir de trois ans", a fait valoir M. Chatel.
"On peut tout à fait dès trois, quatre ans, au moment où on découvre le langage, être sensibilisé à la langue anglaise, à des mots, à des comptines, à des chansons", a-t-il rappelé.

L'idée d'enseigner l'anglais aux enfants dès trois ans a été plutôt mal accueillie par les éducateurs, au moment où des postes d'intervenants en langues vont être supprimés en primaire.

L'anglais est la langue vivante-1 de 93% des élèves du second degré, selon le ministère.

Les adultes français arrivent à la 17e place, pour leur niveau d'anglais, d'un classement de 44 pays à travers le monde où l'anglais n'est pas la langue maternelle, selon une enquête d'Education First, société d'enseignement linguistique (EF, séjours linguistiques, échanges culturels) publiée fin mars.

An immigrant is a person living in a country that is not their own, often separated from the core family and in a culture with which they are not familiar. They include diplomats, officials working for international organizations, multinational corporations and international banks, religious groups, aid workers, etc., who probably do not realize that they are immigrants in the same way as asylum seekers, economic migrants escaping poverty in search of a better life or refugees fleeing from civil strife. Nevertheless, all are thrown nolens volens into a different culture, social class, local traditions, language and discourse strategies, etc.

There are, of course, translation and interpretation services available to recently arrived minority ethnic groups in most host countries. However, it is more important to provide incentives for language learning for immigrants to accelerate their integration and thus decrease the sense of insecurity and alienation often felt initially, apart from the obvious benefits of bi-multilingualism.

The language barrier exacerbates intercultural misunderstandings. Those seeking work are at a disadvantage due to subjective factors such as employers fearing migrants are unable to learn a trade because of language deficiencies.

Language issues are highly political. Some governments are quick to embrace emigration as a panacea for unemployment and underemployment in their own countries and governments in the receiving countries propagate pessimistic prognosis regarding integration.

Certain working environments can interfere with migrants’ cross-cultural adaptation. In workplaces where the majority of employees are from the same linguistic background, which is other than the host language, there is the danger of apathy setting in and it is therefore essential to encourage immigrants to take advantage of whatever language tuition is available not only to facilitate integration but to aspire to self- improvement...
