Carlos Nilmmns warms up your speakers with a set of seductive grooves.

Interview with Carlos Nilmmns by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you been up to recently ?

It’s been a really good few months for me. The Ornaments release has had positive vibes about it and the label are now launching Ornaments Symphony 2 mixed by Luke Hess a mix CD featuring all of the tracks. RED is now released on Skylax, I have another few projects coming out on the Paris label later on in the year which is cool. One of the last remixes was KaSpars "Able To Find". I’m meeting up with the guys in Lisbon next month.

Where and how was the mix recorded ?

The mix was recorded in my house using CDs and Ableton and my old Pioneer DJM-500 served with some really nice coffee…

Can you tell us a little about the mix ?

Sure thing ! I wanted to do a mix for home listening, a BBQ party or for just in the car or something. The warm weather is coming so some warm moody vibes sounds about right. I included some unreleased music by Paris producer Zadig who is creating a lot of positive attention at the moment. He also remixed my "She Likes Analogue" track which is a really good interpretation. I also included a track from Vince Watson’s new album. I’ve had this on repeat for a while. He is a huge inspiration and a dear old friend.

You’ve got a new album coming out. What can we expect from that ?

"Lune Eclaire" is a collection of different moods and grooves that span different forms of electronic music. I like to keep things raw, musical and deep. The album guests the voice of Keter Darker from Chicago who I met through M50 (Area/Wave Music USA) I love Keter D’s voice and gells really well with those vintage synths.

There’s a lot going on the album from USA influenced house and techno with all the rawness added from Glasgow. In a silly way they are like short stories to me.

How did you approach the recording process? Were the tracks written
specifically for the album?

I wanted to try and push as far as I could to express myself with different styles. I never wanted to rush this hence why it’s taken so long. It’s important for my solo work to remain a little different from the Solab releases. I try lol !

I recorded about 90% of this music in takes using hardware and tested out different methods to get certain raw sounds. So if it was one of the slower tracks like "Late Nights" it was created using hardware to get that desired chunky raw effect The arrangement is quite random but I like the effect it has. It can be a lot of effort when you are trying to convert sample rates using an S900 with only about 15 secs of free space… the length of time spent on that machine has been mental but I think the warm 12-bit quality from this machine helps the sound of my music.

What’s next for you after the album ?

I have a few projects on the go with the brilliant Niko Marks. Other projects feature Sandra Boumezer and Gwen who both have beautiful voices. Sandra’s track has been picked up by a few folk already including Jazzanova. Niko and I will finish Gwen’s track as part of an EP.

I also finished a remix of "Inner Feelings" by Aubrey. The original was released on Ferox and has been in my record box since day of purchase in 1999. We plan to release the new remixes as part of a re-issue package someday too.

Carlos Nilmmns preps new album, Lune Eclaire

Carlos Nilmmns – Lune Eclaire [Lifeworld/4lux]

Glasgow’s Carlos Nilmmns, aka Ross McMillan, has been a techno and house player for years and now finally drops his debut solo LP on Lifeworld. It is a fluid electronic affair, where enigmatic instrumentation rubs shoulders with swirling synthetics. Nilmmns’ sound might be primarily associated with clubs and dancing, but this organic collection is just as good for home listening. Lune Eclaire is a success.

Interview with Dimi Angélis by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you been up to recently ?

I spend a lot of time making music together with Jeroen Search, sorting out music for my DJ sets, listening promos, buying and listening new music online and burning CDs (which I hate…) and playing my DJ sets on the weekends off course.

Where and how was the mix recorded ?

The mix was recorded at the XT3 Studio in Amsterdam where I make all my podcasts as I don’t have two CD players at home… I used the set-up in the studio with 2 CDJ-1000 CD players and a Pioneer DJM-800 mixer.

Can you tell us a little about the mix ?

Actually there’s not much to tell about this mix. I mixed it on a monday evening with the same CD map I used the weekend before at some gig. For me it feels the same as a live gig on the radio or in a club. I start my set and see what’s happening. :-)

On June 25th you’re playing at the Awakenings festival in Amsterdam with Jeroen Search, what can we expect from your performance ?

At Awakenings festival we perform live as Counterpart and we are doing an energetic trippy and booming live set !

What’s up next for you ?

I have my DJ gigs and some very nice Counterpart live gigs as well. Also there’s a lot of new music coming up from me and Jeroen Search. 2 EPs on Traut Muzik, Stockholm LTD, and a new EP on Balans. Also we do some remixes for M_Grey, ESHU, Fluxus Records and Fach.

New Angélis & Search twelve on Traut Muzik hits shelves this month

Dimi Angélis & Jeroen Search – If Reshape EP [Traut Muzik]

Dimi Angélis and Jeroen Search have a knack of making urgent techno efforts that demand your attention. Omnia V2 does this courtesy of slamming beats and an infectious bass groove. If Reshape is a synth driven attack, while De Novo is all menacing bass work and pounding drums.

Interview with Jeroen Search by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you been up to recently ?

Most of the time I’ve been busy making tracks / remixes and preparing my livesets.

Where and how was the mix recorded ?

The mix was recorded with a mixer and 2 CD players, no vinyl this time.

Can you tell us a little about the mix ?

It’s a collection of tracks of which I feel it is interesting music, with some upcoming releases and remixes I did as well.

What’s up next for you ?

Got some great gigs coming up, solo and as Counterpart (w/ Dimi [Angélis]). Releases are planned this year: Dimi & Jeroen on Stockholm LTD, Traut Records and Balans. Remixes for MGrey, Strom Recordings and Eshu are planned. A new project is born, a coorporation with Markus Suckkut, we finished some tracks now so probably will have it released the year also. Just released is my " Destiny EP" on Coincidence Records. So no complaints on my side…

And for Counterpart ?

We’re playing a few festivals this year (Awakenings Festival, Welcome to the Future Festival), and we got some plans for a new release as well…

In celebration of our fourth anniversary, one of our favourite producers, Vince Watson mixes up the latest Electronic Directory podcast.

Interview with Vince Watson by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you been up to recently ?

Such a short question with such a long answer !! I’ll make it shorter :)

New agent, new studio, new manager and new publisher. I’ve been getting my backlog of DJ mixes and radio shows done this month, as well as finishing an EP for a massive label, that will be announced soon. Next month I begin it all again… :)

Where and how was the mix recorded ?

I recorded the mix yesterday 22 Feb using my trusty CDJ’s and 1210′s. I used my hands to put CD’s into the machines and vinyl records onto the turntables, then used my best judgement to make them sounds good together as much as possible while in the back of my mind telling a story of some kind… And building the music up and up. The rest is magic… :)

Can you tell us a little about the mix ?

It’s a nice balance of different flavours. I’ve done a lot of radio mixes and interviews this year already, so it’s been nice to expand the CD wallet a little bit, bringing in remastered old music and edits that I’ve made of other people’s music. I wanted to just give a balanced example of the music that I love and make.

How did your residency at Tresor come about ? Can you tell us a little about the concept behind the event ?

I played there back in July for Alexander Kowalski’s Damage label night, and it was completely crazy. After I heard Future Beat Alliance’s single I offered to do an EP, and in fact ended up signing 2 EP’s, the next one is due on April 25th. The were revamping the club nights, and asked both me and FBA to be residents on Wednesdays once a month. We called the night Radio Drama, because that is my favourite FBA track. The night quickly grew to a 700 crowd, so we’ve had a break over february and on March 11th we come back on a Friday with Octave One Live. There will be more news on the Radio Drama night soon…

Do you have a crowd pleaser, if so what track is it ?

I have many of them…but I’m pleased to say that My Desire on Planet E just gets it every time. Even with no beats it gets an amazing response, so I love playing it…but it’s not an easy track to drop.

What’s up next for you ?

My relocation to Amsterdam is now complete, and I’m on fire in the studio at the moment, so with a new agent now in place were starting the touring again. Other than that I’ll be finishing off my numerous remixes on the go and getting all these EP’s finished for the big labels. I also have a very exciting collaboration with another high profile artist, an obvious evolution of work we have done before together…news about that later in the spring ! It’s going to turn heads…

Vince Watson debuts on Tresor

Vince Watson – Atom EP [Tresor]

Vince Watson opens his Tresor account with a couple of plump technoid efforts that should appeal to big-room jocks. The winner is the first cut, a punishing synth workout entitled Atom.

In celebration of our third anniversary: this week’s podcast is a live set from Belgian techno prince, Fabrice Lig.

The biography of the Charleroi based techno producer, Fabrice Lig, is almost overwhelming. He’s left an impressive legacy over the last decade as an international DJ, club owner, label boss of his imprint Melodika Recordings, and as a remixer and recording artist producing the classic albums, "Walking On A Little Cloud", "My 4 Stars" and "Evolutionism". This year sees him achieve a first, the release of his first full-length in six years – Genesis of a Deep Sound showcases Ligny’s talent for all things deep techno. Electronic Directory caught up with Fabrice Lig to ask a few questions about the performance, the new album and his forthcoming plans.

Interview with Fabrice Lig by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you been up to recently ?

Many things. I decided to return to teaching; so it means preparing courses, teach by the week almost everyday, and I launched some multimedia projects to do, with my students ;-). As well as preparing some "music composing" courses for SAE, an international music school…I will try to explain how I compose, my techniques, my feeling on it. But in the meantime, I’m on different musical projects ; that e.p on R&S, that e.p on Subject Detroit, that remixes project for Third Ear with some excellent remixes from Mad Mike, Luke Slater, Marco Passarani, Fluxion, Sebastien San, Kiko Navarro, a live version of "The Soul is back"… I also worked on remixes for Kenny Hawkes, DJ Hell…and some others… So I tough to calm down a bit my schedule, but it seems it’s more diversified but as busy as before…

Where was the set recorded ?

It was recorded in Belgium, Brussels, in a small underground party setted up by my friend "DJ Trish [van Eynde]", our best techno DJ in Belgium.

Can you tell us a little about the performance ?

Hmm, was quiet good as it was a real old school techno audience, the real fans of DJ Trish and the Detroit orientated sound… So the people followed me from the deep side of the set to the strong and funky techno side I play sometimes. The room was dark and simple like we used to know a while ago. So it’s always a pleasure to play into that kind of environment.

fabricelig_live_motorcitysounds_2010.wmv

How did you choose the name Genesis Of The Deep ?

In fact it’s "Genesis of a Deep Sound". Because the concept was to explain how I found my own sound in the early days, before the albums on Raygun or F-Com. That’s why the album include some old tracks I made 15 Years ago (but unreleased)… For the real fans, it will be the key to understand from where I come musically and how I progressed to arrive to that Raygun and F-Com period… So it’s the genesis of my quest to the deep and funky techno. Into the CD box, the people will find a booklet where I explain a bit that story and a special tracklisting of tracks from my discography, and if they are following that tracklisting after they had a listen on "Genesis of a Deep Sound", they will have a better idea of my progression. (that booklet will be available digitally on iTunes and other digital stores too).

Was there any particular reason you went back into your archives and pulled out old material ?

I think you have the answer into the previous question…but to resume, I wanted to do it to give a chance to the real fans to have the complete story into their hands… My compositions from the early days to today. I would be happy to be able to get it from my favourite composers. (It’s always possible, but it’s never really structured and explained as I did here).

Aside from the album, what do you have coming up ?

Like I said before…R&S release (Digital Forest), Subject Detroit release (Hmong’s Dignity), Third Ear release (The Soul is Back remixes). DJ Hell "Wonderland" Fabrice Lig remix, I should receive a video clip of "Australow-P-Tek Funk" (Evolutionism album, the track with Ken Ishii), directed by friend Pedro Cali, and from what I’ve already seen from the video, it will be amazing… After that, probably a new 10" on Fine art, and then…I don’t know…It will depend of my inspiration…

Fabrice Lig releases his new full-length on Fine Art Recordings

Fabrice Lig – Genesis of a Deep Sound [Fine Art Recordings]

Fabrice Lig serves up a real gem that shows why he is such a well respected figure. Unlike many techno albums where monotony too often takes over, this album holds the attention from start to finish, due to the variety of styles and the intensity and quality of the music on show. Every track holds its own, but high points include the hypnotic beauty of "BC 98", the electroid magic of "Energy Machine", a gorgeous downtempo effort entitled "Cosmic Booty" and the sweet "Japanese Soul". "Genesis of a Deep Sound" represents a spectacular display of electronic emotion.

The second installment in Sect Records mix series comes courtesy of Warsaw-based Kalamazoo techno DJ and producer, D-Knox.

Together with the likes of Jay Denham and Fanon Flowers, Donnell Knox carved out a name for himself in the Kalamazoo techno scene in the mid nineties with funk-laden hard hitting techno on labels such as Black Nation and his own label Sonic Mind. 2009 saw the release of his first record on Sect Records, which further showcased Knox’s musical and production skills and gained praise from techno and house selectors alike. Knox has returned to the Sect imprint this past month with his second record, Looking Through Your Eyes. Electronic Directory caught up with Donnell Knox to ask a few questions about the mix.

Interview with Donnell Knox by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you been up to recently ?

Recently I have been traveling around and experimenting with other music styles. I’ve been involved in numerous jam sessions with musicians from different countries. Jazz hip hop electronic, even pop. I’ve also been engaged in acting and script writing in Poland, for films and televisions shows.

Can you tell us a little about the mix ?

I call it a groove mix not to fast, and not to slow just right for any occasion in your car in your house at the club, just plain old great music.

Where and how was the mix recorded ?

The mix was recorded in my 2nd studio in Warsaw using decks with PC.

You’ve moved from the US to Warsaw. How’s everything going ? What was the reason behind the move ?

Everything is great esp life, Warsaw is lovely the location is wonderful being that I can get to Berlin in less than 5 hrs. The reason to make the move here was solely for the music, the location as I stated before makes it more convenient to travel, since most of the business I conduct is in Europe.

How does living in Warsaw affect your music ?

I feel it has changed the sound a bit being that Warsaw is a fast pace city unlike Kalamazoo. The one thing that has changed when it comes to music making is in Warsaw I don’t go to other producers studios in Kalamazoo I often go to other producers studios and participate in jam sessions.

You’ve got your second record on Sect coming up. How did you hook up with the label initially ?

Thomas and I started talking on MySpace and thru email, and from there you have to releases on Sect.

What are the Sonic Mind plans for 2010 ? What can we expect ?

Sonic Mind plans to release great music this year, there will be some collaborations with other artist and some great releases from D-Knox. Expect great things from Sonic Mind.

Aside from the record on Sect, what else have you got on the horizon for 2010 ?

There will be some collaborations on other labels and some releases on other labels please stay tuned for that.

D-Knox releases his second EP on Sect Records

D-Knox – Looking Through Your Eyes [Sect Records]

D-Knox brings us a fine four tracker in the shape of the Looking Through Your Eyes EP. The first track, "At The Beginning" is a cosmic techy opus while "If I Never Knew You" is an explosive winner. "Out There" is all grooving bass work and sturdy beats and "On My Way" hits with ethnic female vocals and shuffling percussion.

In celebration of our third anniversary, Belgian wonder-duo Spirit Catcher provide a mix of deep house and techno for this week’s podcast.

Spirit Catcher are in fact two: Belgian engineer Jean Vanesse and keyboard player Thomas Sohet are both consistent with what they do, they’ve built a reputation through their dynamic live performances and superb productions. More recently Spirit Catcher have been releasing more groove-based techno and house cuts on 2020 Vision and Systematic Recordings, and have even compiled their debut mix CD for NRK.

Electronic Directory caught up with Spirit Catcher to ask a few questions about the mix.

Interview with Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you guys been up to recently ?

The main plan for this year is to finish a second album. So we are actively working on it right now. It took a while before we could have our mind really focused on it. We firstly needed to work on some ep’s like "Secret Stranger" on Rebirth and "Sedona" on Systematic to make some explorations into new music ways. We also worked on a new version of our live show, involving the changes we operated in our sound lately.

Where and how was the mix made ?

After re-organizing and dusting off our records collection we were inspired to make this Deep House to Deep Techno mix. We were remembering how Fabrice Lig addicted us to Deep Techno with all his great productions and enthusiasm. We were buying almost everything from John Tejada, Kanzleramt, Titonton/Residual, Morgan Geist… Shame that this style has so suffer since the Minimal tsunami blew up Germany and then hits the rest of the world :-(

You guys are touring the US, Canada and Mexico in May. How do you guys prepare differently for a tour of America than you guys would normally ?

We don’t make big differences if we travel in US than anywhere else. We try to be flexible as much as possible to be able to react to the crowd we have in front of us. We worked our new live in that way and that’s the same way of thinking if we go to Asia, Europe or America. And of course we organise our packs of equipments differently to avoid any problems at the security check and custom to make things easier for everybody.

Do you have any plans to release another album ?

Yessss :-))

Motech head honcho, DJ 3000, provides a bouncy mix to start off 2010.

Franki Juncaj, DJ 3000, is one of the most consistently booked DJs in the Submerge camp. Originally from Hamtramck, Michigan and currently based in Maastricht, he’s been circling the globe. In his spare time, he likes to run Motech Records, releasing the likes of DJ Dex, Gerald Mitchell, Gary Martin and Fabrice Lig. Release-wise, Juncaj has mixed three compilations for Electrofunk’s Somewhere In Detroit mix series, Submerge and Explicit Musick’s Ekspozicija, and there have been three studio albums, the last of which, the traditional Detroit sound, Red Planet-influenced "Galactic Caravan", hit stores in 2009.

Electronic Directory caught up with Franki Juncaj to ask him about the mix and what he’s got coming up later this year.

Interview with DJ 3000 by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you been up to recently ?

I just been busy with some remixes for Counterpart, Jack De Marseille and DJ Compufunk and I did a remix for DJ Bone that is dropping very soon, besides that just always making music and also I am in the middle of rebuilding my studio so thats real exciting ! Motech label stuff always keeps me busy of course with planning projects and trying to makes shit happen.

Where and how was the mix made ?

I did this mix at home the good old fashion way with two turntables, CDJ and a mixer recorded live. I also do the mixes live because you get that raw mixing and emotion I think and if you were to hear me play in the club this mix shows it the same way. Why both doing a mix if its not live unless your doing genres of music that is hard to mix live jazz mixed with other stuff ok that fine but live mixes is the only way.

Can you tell us a little about the mix ?

The week during the mix I had finished two other mixes for other websites, one for a crew in Dublin and one for a crew in France so when I decided to do this one I wanted to mix it a little different than the other two. The first two were more straight techno tunes and more uptempo so for the Electronic Directory mix I decided to keep it a bit slower and more funky tech house kinda sound and I did mix this on sunday so maybe thats why the mix turned out the way it did ? Its hard for me to describe my mixes but this one just has a overall funky groove to it I think and I used some records that are limited edition and some tunes that are unreleased on Motech and UR and some others that will be released soon. I think people will like this mix I had fun doing it…

The Galactic Caravan Remixes album has been out in Japan for a month now (and will be available internationally in February) – how has the feedback been ?

The feedback has been great so far ! I was touring Japan in December and it was great and the 2 CD set is fucking crazy in my opinion lots of killer artist and sounds on it. I think the impact will be greater as each 12-inch is released with the remixes because the CD only reaches certain consumers and records are a whole other consumer so overall is great.

So, did you select the remixers yourself ?

This was real easy, I had given Ben Sims the album and he really like the Midnight Express track so I asked him to remix it and he was happy to do it and other friends emailed me and asked to remix other songs so I figured I may as well ask all my friends and people who I respect to remixes tunes they like from the Galactic Caravan original album and in the end 23 songs on 2 CDs so its huge project. The project would have been bigger but some people just didnt have the time so I could have imagined what could have happened but its ok 23 is allot so the double CD set is plenty of music for people to enjoy and the vinyl releases will be even better !

What else is on the horizon for Motech ?

I have a new project coming out in March called "Broken Research" Vol.2 its more of down tempo project, nothing dance floor at all only slower music. The projects just Motech artist and friends that make other styles other than uptempo dance songs and I wanted to show people that the label if more than just Ethnic Detroit style dance label. Vol.1 wasnt exactly the way I wanted it to turn out but Vol.2 is exactly the way I envisioned it so I think people will be impressed, I know I am !

Other than that I am planning to release all the remixes from the album as well as my other artist on Motech but its not easy these days to sell vinyl but I keep pushing because vinyl is the key to everything "it makes the world go round" ! I plan on releasing a mix CD too for 2010 on Motech featuring Motech songs as well as songs from friends from around the world, I also have some new artist to debut that will surprise people with there sound but hey motech as never been a one trick pony !!

Motech loves to bring out remixes of DJ 3000′s Galactic Caravan

DJ 3000 gets the remix treatment from his friends and Motech players on this double disc set. The first package is an exploration of modern electronic grooves, which will reward home and club listeners–standouts include the moody Mr De remix of Seven Tribes Of Hoti, Esteban Adame’s graceful revision of Her Smile and a more subtle version of Shawn Rudiman’s Her Smile. The second package wins with stellar displays from Alexander Robotnick, Mark Flash and DJ Bone. Robotnick makes it big with his synth driven electroid sound, Flash goes a mammoth synth led workout and Bone does his epic ABM thang to Meloudic Landscapes.

This week’s Electronic Directory podcast is a funked-up techno groover from Submerge Recordings’ The Plan.

The Detroit-based DJ and production duo, The Plan (Cliff Thomas and Jon MacNish), executed a hit-and-run with their critically acclaimed debut record "Plan A" in 2005. Their tracks have appeared on everything from Submerge Recordings’ compilations to Richie Hawtin’s "DE9 Transitions" and Hardfloor’s "Tales Of The Unexpected". Cliff and Jon’s production talents can also be seen in their DJ sets. They released a mix CD "D. Part Vol. 1", which blended hypnotic grooves, sci-fi techno soundscapes and Motor City soul.

Electronic Directory caught up with Cliff Thomas briefly to talk about the mix and what he’s up to next.

Interview with Cliff Thomas by Kazuumi Ishii

It’s been over a year since your last output for Depth Charge Six. What have you been up to in the meantime ?

Well Depth Charge 6 was my final project with Submerge Recordings under the excusive contract me and Jon were under at the time. That compilation was allot of fun to put together. Since then we had done a few remixes for Aaron Carl on his Wallshaker label. Jon started going back to school like he had planned and we haven’t had much time to work together on new material since then. We have however made allot of music that has yet to be released that we had been putting away for a new label that we plan to launch soon. We had been in training for this for quite a while. Since then I had moved from where I was staying into the Submerge building where there is a very creative era happening right now.

Where and how was the mix made ?

It was recorded at Jon’s house off of all vinyl into a computer in one take so I would have something to listen to in the car on my way to work that day.

Can you tell us a little about the mix ?

I just wanted to do a quick mix for fun out of some new and old records I like. This was made at the same time we did the "Before The Collapse" mix that we released for free download on Detroit Digital Vinyl at the time. It was all for fun. I actually havent listened to this mix in a while. It’s like a trip in the time machine for me.

What’s been happening in the Submerge camp, lately ? Is there anything on the horizon that you’d like to tell us about ?

All I can say is that there is an energy around the camp that I have never felt before. It’s a very creative period for allot of people going on at once and allot of freindly competition going on. The knowledge keeps on being handed down to the next generation and many new monsters are about to emerge from the dungeon along with some older ones. This camp is full of some extremely talented and hard working people and the bar has been set very high for all involved. There’s some producers around here that are really doing some great work right now like Nick Speed and John Dixon. Nick is a really talented hip hop producer, i’ve never seen somebody work like he does he pulls beats out of the air that none of us would ever even think of. John Dixon is simply one of the best keyboard players I have ever seen, he’s got the studio right next to mine and I constantly hear things coming out of there that makes my hair stand on end, he’s got a gift.

What can we expect from The Plan in the future ?

More music more mixes. We’re in this for life…..

Electronic Directory teams up with Sect Records for label partnership series. In celebration of the release of Sect 6 – "The Jolka Experience", the first installment comes from Jolka aka Luka Baumann.

Over the last 5 years Luka Baumann has been making a name for himself with releases on Emergence Records, his own label PSNZ and most recently Sect Records. Collaborating with his partner in crime Grovskopa and as a duo, they produce their own original productions with a darker and harder edge. While producing hard-hitting, industrial techno, he’s also got the deeper side of things under his Jolka guise.

Electronic Directory caught up with Luka Baumann for a chat.

Interview with Luka Baumann by Kazuumi Ishii

What have you been up to lately ?

Watching a lot of Star Trek: Enterprise. Had a lot of catching up to do, kinda didn’t like them the first time, thought it wasn’t true to the original. Don’t know what I was thinking, they are great actually. So unfair they stopped airing it after 4th season. On a more serious note, just finished setting up a broadcast studio facility with a friend, which was a very big project. Been out of the loop with everything and everyone for quite a while.

Where and how was the mix made ?

Friday night with a few friends, some wine spritzers and a record button.

Can you tell us a little about the mix ?

I wanted to mix here music that is regularly in my player. Some of the tracks are older and some are new. I start with my remix for Davor O on Matrix Detroit and a bit more melodic stuff further down the road. It gets a bit hypnotic in the middle, but towards the end things get pretty deep, especially with Petar Dundov’s remix for Homeboy. The last few tracks make the mix a bit groovier again, samey feeling as those at the beginning. Last one by Grovskopa is pretty addictive, don’t you think ? Stunning vocals and melodies, really loving it.

How is electronic music in Croatia these days ?

There are quite a few artists that have emerged on the scene in the last few years and are making pretty good music. Nothing different than in any other European country I guess.

A new club has opened doors not even a year ago, ‘Sirup’, dedicated to electronic music, which is the first such specialized club opened in Zagreb, maybe even Croatia, I believe. Good sound system, nice people, steady amount of good music, week in, week out.

So, let’s go back in time. Who were the first DJs that caught your ear when you were growing up with electronic music ?

I remember when I first started making electronic music, the concept of a DJ was something I wasn’t quite familiar with. Quite strange, when i think about it now. I had these recorded radio shows tapes I would listen to, didn’t have a clue there were clubs that were playing this kind of music, internet was something I heard it existed and none of my friends were into what I was into musically at that time. I started clubbing and connecting with people, discovering new music. I hooked up on house music and drum’n'bass at first, a bit later I discovered Techno – Oscar Mulero, Surgeon, Jeff Mills, Autechre etc. It was really exciting discovering new music like that, step by step. Great times.

Your music is definitely louder, more industrial, and very abstract… How has Birmingham stuff influenced your sound ?

It’s been a great influence for me, most definitely. Mick Harris, Surgeon, Regis, Makaton and the rest of the gang. Very honest and real music. It shared the aesthetics of Futurism, that I was really into at the time. Besides that, I early started consuming extreme and a bit more obscure music. NON, Haus Arafna, Current 93, Nurse With Wound, Coil…that sort of thing. The whole ethos of that kind of music made me feel at home and it was only natural to go down that path with my own work.

You’ve been working a lot with Mika Hallbaeck [Grovskopa], has he been a particular influence ?

We run Emergence Records together and have been collaborating on few different projects. We think alike, not only in musical terms, but also on a more general level. He has always been a great source of inspiration for me.

How do you produce together ?

We did a project or two together in studio, but most of our work was made remotely, since we actually reside on different sides of Europe. Either him or me start something, an idea and send it to the other side. Project gets bounced back and forth few times, tracks change shape throughout the whole process. We talk about it, suggest to each other what should be changed or what sounds good. Usually the one who started the song, gets to arrange it.

What was it like working together in the studio ? Do you have any stories you can share ?

No funny stories, sorry. We are dead fucking serious guys.

So how did your Jolka project come about ? That first single "The Jolka Experience" for Sect Records was much more deeper stuff, not as industrial as you would maybe do under your own name.

It’s a different mindset. Human being is capable of so many different emotions and Jolka is me embracing this notion. I have learned how to deal with life in a way that is much more beneficial for my psyche and this whole new persona started to grow in me. Music that started to come out of me felt different and sounded different. It was not intentional, it just sort of happened. That was always very important to me – to not force anything I do. If I can’t write music for 6 months, that is perfectly fine with me. It certainly doesn’t feel nice to have a creative block, but when I start writing again, I need that feeling of freedom, with nothing imposing it. I’ve been struggling for a while, there was a lot of different projects I wanted to do, but that just made my focus dissipate and in the end it felt like hitting a brick wall, but Jolka made me feel free again and I am really, really enjoying myself making music after a great while.

Do you have any guilty musical pleasures ?

You know it. Just the other night, neighbors were having a party with some loud MTV music, I was this close to get up on my feet, crash the party and show them some secret dance moves of mine. Stayed in bed, tapping the foot in rhythm though.

What/who do you think about when you’re making music ?

Best music happens when you are induced in this trance-like state of the mind. No thoughts whatsoever. This is when I know I am doing it right. So, no there isn’t any thought process involved, except when dealing with the engineering side of the things, which is actually right there from the start. A bit of a paradox. Creative and technical parts are so interleaved in Techno music, you cannot simply close your eyes, push few buttons and get carried away, which is actually all there should be to making music.

First you have to learn everything there is to know about technology, that you are so comfortable with it and able to use it intuitively. It is the same as with learning how to play any traditional instrument, but once you learn how to play that electric guitar good enough, I bet there is no greater rush other than getting on stage and playing that solo (except maybe dropping that 808 kick on top of warmest bass line evar :-) ).

How did your Jolka release end up on Sect Records ?

Thomas approached Mika and me when he was setting up the label. After the first release we did together as Brethren, we started talking about each doing his own, since Thomas handled things so professionally and we developed a good relationship with him. I showed Thomas Jolka stuff and he was hooked immediately.

What is it about the Sect ethos that you’re into ?

It’s about mutual respect and communication between an artist and a label.

Finally, after the release of The Jolka Experience, what projects are you looking forward to in the future ?

Definitely working on more Jolka music. Few friends suggested we do some sort of collaboration too. That is something I look forward to. Preparing a new EP on Sect, followed by remixes. More on that when the time comes. At the moment, I am working on a remix for Inigo Kennedy on Rodz Konez label.

Jolka to release The Jolka Experience

Croatian techno producer Luka Baumann has been serving up experimental beats since 2004 and here he shows his deeper side with this lovely effort on Sect Records. Inception takes its strength from a solid bassline and steady beats and lush chords while Arcus does the business courtesy of dubbed out chords. Covection is a brilliant chord driven workout and Dreamful produces an all over warm feeling, courtesy of sweet synths and a pulsing bassline.
