While I respect the concern that another reviewer has expressed about having to install Amazon’s software downloader in order to buy this software, I would add an assurance to others that the process is straightforward and caused no system problems. Moreover, once the download was complete, there is a link to the uninstaller in the Start menu folder which removes the downloader in under a minute. Perhaps if I had not been a long time Amazon customer, I would have been more suspicious of the process, but there were no problems. Now if Amazon would just pay my taxes …

I purchased Turbo Tax Deluxe 2009 from Amazon. Turbo Tax informed me that my state was ready. I launched Turbo Tax and my state was sitting there ready to go. It said I get one free state with my purchase, but when I went to “start” the state it took me on-line to purchase it.

I sent e-mail through turbo tax support just as a post on the turbo tax forum said to. I got no response. After a week of patiently waiting, I called up turbo tax (from the number in the program). I was put on hold but was robotically told I would be getting great customer service.

I installed this Adobe bundle on a brand new HP PC with a Intel 2 Quad processor and Windows 7, and, while I love Photoshop and some of the upgraded features, Premiere crashed twice the first time I used it and took forever to process. (More on preventing crashes later.) Photoshop is a must-have program. Premiere is a basic, no-frills program with some major issues, designed for composing movies out of digital video clips and still photos.

First, Photoshop: Photoshop Elements remains one of the most powerful image processors for the non-professional user. From special effects to simply improving the look of standard photos, the software can manipulate photos in almost any way you can imagine. Out of the newest features, the most interesting are recomposition tools, size presets, and facial recognition. In the first, the user can unlock the background from the foreground and bring foreground images closer or farther from one another, and can even remove unsightly objects from the photo altogether. With protect and remove brushes, you can even erase your ex from that family photo and bring everyone closer together to fill the empty space. Facial recognition, while quirky at times, works so you can quickly extract all the photos of an individual from your library — say, you want to delete every photo that contains your ex or print them out for dartboards, and so you call them up to see them all at once. The quirky part comes when the software recognizes that a bird or a gorilla is not a person, but then asks “Who’s this?” while pointing to a flower stalk or a print on someone’s dress. The facial recognition feature works best if you take the time to fill out names on many photos. Eventually, it recognizes certain people, with or without sunglasses, in profile or full face. The size presets are the most practical improvement, as you can size your photos to standard sizes — say, 4x 6 or 8x 10 — simply by pulling down a window and selecting.

Premiere Elements 8 has serious problems some of which have been traced to conflicts with Realtek Audio drivers and Nvidia graphics card installation software. These conflicts render the PE8 useless to those that have Asus and Nvidia hardware or software on their computers. Asus and Nvidia are major players in the computer hardware industry; the extent of the conflict problem can be seen in the large number of reviewers that have given PE8 a very low rating. This type of conflict should have been sorted out by Adobe in beta testing before the product was shipped. Avoid this software if you use Nvidia graphics drivers or AVCHD 1080 or above. Be prepared to get under the hood of your PC to install new drivers, regedit and employ multiple workarounds. Beware reviewers giving this software bundle high marks, most are basing their reviews solely on Photoshop Elements and ignoring Premiere Elements 8 and it’s numberous stability problems. Adobe has been actively soliciting authors to write favorable reviews to offset ones made by actual paying not “compensated” customers.

I’ve a happy user of Kaspersky products for several years and most recently I’ve been very satisfied with Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) 2009. When I received my renewal notice I checked on line and sure enough, I could purchase the current product Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 3-User for less than it would cost me to renew. However, I was a bit put off and somewhat surprised by some of the negative reviews. Also, from the “Features Matrix” on the KIS 2010 page I saw that it didn’t offer much that I could use over their anti-virus product. Selecting Kaspersky Anti-Virus (KAV) also saved me a few dollars.

KAV installed without a hitch. It took less than 10 minutes, including a reboot, to install KAV from CD and another couple minutes for the automatic virus database update. It has worked flawlessly (and transparently) ever since. This is what I have come to expect from Kaspersky.

I loved Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. It was the best IS software I have owned. Their upgrade cost was pricey so I bought it through amazon.com, one of their market sellers.

I bought the 3 user license and installed it on my 3 computers. No problem at first. Then, one by one, they each had protection suspended for a “license violation”. I chatted with Kaspersky tech support and they instructed me how to reactivate the license. This worked, but each computer continues to be kicked off at intermittent times and left my computers unprotected.

I am writing this review with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred. I finally had to cut and paste “NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred.” because this program was performing so poorly. If ever this program was going to fail this is not a good time. LOL

This program is buggy and tech support is horrible. I have never been able to get results like the ones I see advertised on the Internet. If I could type and spell well I would leave this program alone. Unfortunately I have dyslexia and am a slow typist. Dragons speak definitely adds to my productivity significantly. If you are in a similar situation like myself, I would advise purchasing the preferred version over the standard version because this program can read back what you have typed in. I find this very helpful because often times my mind wants to read what I think should be on the page instead of what’s actually been written. Dragon speak has a funny way of changing your words slightly so that your sentences don’t make sense. I would advise future customers to consider an upgraded microphone, plenty of RAM, and a decent CPU. I know people have complained about loading this program but I had no trouble. I’m using windows XP.

The only reason I’m reviewing this upgraded version of Dragon is because of all the negative reviews I have read. To be perfectly honest, I was hesitant to install the software because of all the problems I was reading about in the past 10 days. I received the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 CD almost a week ago and have not installed it for fear I would mess up my computer, LOL. Finally, after reading all the negative comments and doing a lot of research on installing the program, I crossed my fingers and took the chance.

I can say in all honesty that it installed without a hitch. I receive no error messages, no constant reboot requests, no lost user files, nothing. Everything went smoothly. I have been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 preferred for the past two years and decided to upgrade because of the faster recognition and updated features. After inserting the Dragon 10 CD in the drive, the software loaded and proceeded to install. It recognized that I had a previous version installed and asked if I wanted to keep my user files for the new version. I clicked yes and the software did the rest.

Aperture 3 Reviews:

I have been using aperture for about 2 years, and have been very excited about Aperture 3 coming out. I am not disappointed They have added many things that I wanted like facebook and flicker syncing, video, selective brushes, etc.. The best way to get an idea about all the new stuff is to go to the “how to” section on apples aperture website and watch all the videos.

Before I start the review I need to add a few caveats. The first is I have not really used Adobe Lightroom so I will not be comparing Aperture 3 to Lightroom. (Lightroom is the biggest competitor to Aperture and from what I have read owns the majority of the market). I have tried Lightroom 3 and I could not get past the restrictive module system and the small editing space. I thought I was going to have to slog through learning how to used Lightroom 3 when Apple surprised and delighted me by releasing Aperture 3. Also, I haven’t really used iPhoto that much since I got Aperture 2. So I will only be making passing remarks about those programs. The other caveat is that this is a massive program with massive upgrades and there is no way I can cover everything so I will be covering how this program handles my workflow.

Bottom Line Up Front: Aperture 3 is an amazing Photographic Workflow System that fits all of my professional and personal needs. Apple has implemented so many amazing features into this program that it is an absolute must upgrade from Aperture 2. For anyone interested in taking their photography up from the casual (iPhoto) to enthusiast level, Aperture 3 is a great tool to help you accomplish that. For anyone using Lightroom who hates being restricted by what module you are in, Aperture 3 offers amazing new professional features especially concerning showcasing your work. (Still+Video slideshoes, GraphiSutdio, Queensberry, Leather Craftsmen, and Couture Books are just some of the outstanding new features.)

Microsoft Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade [Home Premium to Professional] Reviews:

Most laptops/notebooks seem to ship with Windows 7 Home Premium rather than Windows 7 Professional. That is probably fine for most users. However, if you need your Windows 7 Notebook to be part of a business domain network, you need Windows 7 Professional. This upgrade is how you accomplish the change.

It turns out that Windows 7 Home Premium already contains Windows 7 Professional; it is simply not enabled. When you buy this upgrade you are getting an upgrade key. No disk, just a key sticker and very brief instructions. Key it in pursuant to the laughably simple instructions and within minutes you will be running Windows 7 Professional. One caveat: apparently you cannot upgrade from Windows 7 32 to Windows 7 64 bit. This will affect very few users as I do not believe that hardly any computers are shipping with 32 bit Windows 7. Nor should they. Windows 7 64 bit is very compatible with existing 32 bit software, and in the future we can expect lots of 64 bit software and we all want to be ready for it.

I don’t see much commentary here about the actual product performance. There is a lot of confusion about this upgrade in the retail outlets, so I thought I’d explain to those with questions.

I researched Windows 7 before I bought my computer, and knew I wanted Win 7 Professional in case I wanted to run XP programs. Most retail outlets only had Win 7 Home Premium installed on their computers. The computer stores had the Win 7 Pro computers on backorder. Through some investigation at Microsoft, I found out that all versions of Win 7 are preinstalled, and you just need to get a key to “unlock” the higher versions. This is that key.

It took a total of 14 minutes to install this upgrade on my new computer. The hardest part was typing in the multi-digit key. (In other words, not hard!) It ran for 12 minutes, and then it was ready to go!

Family Tree Maker 2010 Essentials Reviews:

I have been using Family Tree Maker for many years, almost since the first release. The last version I was using was FMT 2005. I knew I was getting a new computer with Windows 7 (not an upgrade), 32 bit, so I checked out the reviews here, as well as the FTM support website. The steps I followed were: 1. Install FTM 2010, do not open program when done. 2. Go to shortcut on desktop, rt. click, and check Run as Administrator. You will get a message that updates are available; download and install. (This a Service Pack to the original 2010 program on the disc). 3. Go to the Family Tree Maker website, support tab, and look for answer 4363. This tells how to import FTM files from an earlier version. I did this, opened the tree, and everything looks, and, more importantly, works wonderfully.
This is such a welcome improvement over what I was using, and everything I had before is much easier to view and work with. My file has about 3500 individuals, and few pictures, so is not very big compared to others. And since I already have a subscription to [...], doing searches from within the program is heavenly! I heartily recommend this program if you are thinking about upgrading from older versions. Since I am a long-time user, it was easy to find everything, and figure out how it works.

I have been conducting family research for some eight years, with the help of the Family Tree Maker program (and subscription [...].) I have purchased each new version at its release, always curious to see what had been added. While I have usually been pleased with the program features, I must admit that the last couple of versions have been disappointing to me. The interface had become more complicated and I missed being able to see a more complete screen of family detail.

The Family Tree Maker 2010 is, (IMHO) the finest version of the Family Tree Maker program to date. [...]
