Viewsonic VG1930WM no power, repaired

I just finished repairing a Viewsonic VG1930WM that had no power, no standby LED, completely dead. I opened up the monitor and checked the output voltages from the power supply and both were present and stable. I verified that the 5V was still present at the main board. Next I checked the output from the 3.3V and 1.8V linear voltage regulator ICs on the main board and the 3.3V regulator's output was considerably low around 2.2V, the output from the 1.8V regulator was also very low but it gets its input from the 3.3V regulator so it makes sense that the 1.8V regulators voltage was low. I replaced the 3.3V regulator after verifying it was faulty and the monitor was still dead when I plugged it in to check voltages again, the 3.3V regulator's output was now within tolerance so I again checked the output from the 1.8V regulator and it was still low about 1.2V, so I then replaced the 1.8V regulator and when I plugged the monitor in to check the output from the 1.8V regulator I saw the standby light turn on, the voltage output from the 1.8V regulator was now within tolerance and the monitor turned on and functioned flawlessly.

Temperature Protection Fuse

If you are repairing Hair Dryer, Iron and other type of set that have heating element in it then chances is high you could see the temperature protection fuse in it. The common specification that you can see from the fuse (printed on its body) are the Volt, Ampere and the Celsius. If you want to locate the parts from any electronics shop make sure you get the exact spec. Assuming if you really can’t locate any of the original spec then there are two important things that you need to know. You need to find the replacement that have lesser ampere and lower Celsius. For the volt, it will always be standard. If your country is using 240 volt then the fuse rating would be 250volt.

Please do not get a replacement fuse that have higher ampere and Celsius because if the set have problem and the fuse did not break, the whole set will catch fire or it will melt the casing! As usual, before replace the fuse, one must always check the connection, wiring, insulation and etc because there must be a reason why the fuse blow in the first place. After replace the fuse, fully test the set before returning to customer.

Not Following The Standard Code

During my early days in studying electronics, i was given a list of transistor code/numbering by my lecturer and when you look at any transistors part number you will be certain that the transistor would be belong to which faimly either the NPN, PNP, P-channel FET, N-channel FET, UJT, and etc. For example: A (European code) or 2SA (Japanese code) is a PNP transistor without you have to measure it with your multimeter. Since starting from mid of 90’s there are many manufacturers produced transistors part number that do not follow the standard code and this has made a hard day for electronic repair technicians to find out what type of transistor was that.

The worst case was even the internet and the latest semiconductor databook also do not have such information. Let’s take this part number J6812 as an example. If we are a seasoned electronic repairer we would have surely know that it was a HORIZONTAL OUTPUT TRANSISTOR (HOT). But what about newbiews? If they follow the standard code part number they would have thought that it was a P-channel FET. In Monitor repair there are part number that start with J306, J307, J512, J516 and etc. The newbies would have confused and the J6812 (we have also J6810, J6815 and etc) is made from Fairchild Semiconductor.

You can try search for C557C which is also a PNP transistor! From data book many people will look at S2C557 and they may have thought it was a NPN transistor. This mistake could be a trap for them and end up could not get the equipment ot work. If by following the standard code the C should be belong to NPN like the C945 (2sc945), C1815 (2sc1815), C1213 (2sc1213) and etc. Hope after reading this post you will be more careful identifying transistor part number.

Transistor C5707 Equivalent Part Number

I got lots of emails asked about the substitution part number for C5707 transistor that were used in many LCD Monitors. I normally asked them to buy online as original part number is still the best part for replacement as it is not easy to get a replacement for this transistor. For your information if you have the C5706 transistors you can replace it with C5707 and i have tested it and the LCD Monitor

worked perfectly okay. To some that can’t order the parts online and can’t get it from local electronic suppliers, in fact you can try this part number as replacement.

Try use TIP3055 transistor as recently i came across a website that says that it can be use for replacement for C5707. The TIP3055 is bigger in size compare to C5707 but with some adjustment you could easily fit into the board. However i haven’t try it before because i could get the C5707 from the local market. Try it and please let me know about the result. By the way you can download the C5707 transistor data or specification from this website-please click HERE.

1) What if the Blue ESR meter shows ‘00′ when we check capacitors, does it mean short or very good capacitor.
2) I’ve proven to myself that the meter isn’t effective caps in circuit. Better check it out of circuit.

If your meter cable is too long then it will give you the “00″ result. Make sure the each cable is 30cm long and i found that the esr meter is very good in testing e-cap on board.
3) What is the function of ‘memory’ capacitor and how does it work. I don’t remember if you had mentioned about it in your ‘Testinf E components’ book.

Could you explain this because i have not come across a cap meter that have memory?
4) HP1925 LCD monitor power LED is there but no display. I found few caps popped up in the P supply area and replaced them but no change. 17 volts and less that 5 volts available at the connector to the main board. One polyester film cap found to have high ESR. Replacing that too didn’t solve the problem. Back light lamps seem good. From the beginning I notice very low light appears on for less than a second and the monitor goes to stand by mode. It’s puzzling to me. Please give a clue.

When it already shutdown does the supply voltage to the inverter IC still present? If not suspect a bad mainboard (assuming the mainboard is getting all the correct voltages).

I have a question regarding blue ring tester. When testing a good flyback all lights will light contineous or will flash all the ligth only?

It depends on the flyback belong to how many inches of the Monitor. Generally the 14 to 17″ will show from 7 to 8 LEDs. 19″ and above will have about 4 to 5 LEDs

I used the test coil that is included in the set. and my finding only lit all the lights for a seconds and gone out. i mean the light is not continually on while still connected to the coil, is it normal or not?

Try scratch off the coil wire tip as it was laminated and do not have a good contact. If after removed the lamination and the LEDs still go off then the meter may be not fully assembled and need to recheck again. A good meter should show steady 8 LEDs

i’m facing one problem in my smps that is unstablize or variation in 35 V DC and little sound tik tik sound in power supply but 24V DC is stablize no variation in voltage i thought the sound is coming from smps transformer.Please give me solution for fix it.i’m waiting for your helpfull reply.

You mean you have two output lines 24v and 35 V and only the 35 v not stable? If yes then check along the 35 v line and look for bad filter cap and also the load that is connected to the 35 volt line.

Can I turn on the PSU and measure the voltage at the secondary side of the transformer,

with the secondary side removed? I mean, I desolder all of the pin of the transformer at the secondary side,

and remove the optoisolator and then turn the PSU on and measure the voltage on the secondary side of the transformer.

If the secondary side doesn’t have any output voltage,could it be caused by fault at primary side?

because the primary side on the tranformer pin have voltage.

No you can’t because it may blow the primary side due to no load condition.

Have you check the output voltages from the smps? If no output then check all the components in the power side. If there are voltages entering to the mainboard then suspect a bad mainboard especially the MCU

How do we know watt in a resistor? like 470Ohm 5watt, how do we know
it’s 5 watt if the text on its resistor is missing?

By looking at the size. Generally resistors with the same watt have the same sizes

What i meant was that you must know what are you measuring/doing like meter probe ground connect to primary side filter cap negative pin and etc. If you know what you are checking then it is okay.

Main interference can be reduced.

I have found the return path for the signal to the optoisolator (the blue wire) from the main board to the standby power supply. It should turn on the optoisolator for the path then goes to the main power supply to turn it on. I assume the on signal I am looking for is a 3.3 VDC signal here.

Yes it can be that voltage. As long as the signal is more than 0.7 volt it can be used to trigger any circuit that use semiconductor.

What do you mean by vga signal cable? Is it the wire bundle from the Main Board to the Power Supply or is it an external signal cable, as an antenna or computer line that must be connected to the main board for the MCU to work?

Vga signal cable means the Signals coming out from the computer (RGB, H and V signals) and to the lcd monitor motherboard

The problem with this lcd is that there are vertical lines in all the screen it could be the panel

I have a question regarding LG Flatron L1810 LCD monitor.
The monitor was completely dead.
I replace few components in the SMTP power supply and it back to work, with good 5V & 12V output.
Now the LCD turn on - green LED in the panel, the CCFL are on, but there is no display even no OSD menu.
Do you have any idea?

I have over 200 Dell LCD monitors to look after and to find drawings in South Africa is nigh impossible. It is the DELL 51cm E207WFPc. Is there any chance I could buy it off you?

I have two monitors with white screen. If I change the chassis they work OK. what could this be please?

Sorry i do not have the schematic diagram for this lcd monitor. White screen usually is the problem with the lcd panel (assuming the cable from the mainboard to lcd controller board are connected well). If you have a chasis that have bad board, you can always salvage the lcd panel but the model have to be the same

Phobia In Voltage Testing

I’d heard some stories about technicians that have phohia problem especially in voltage testing. The reason why they had this problem was because they may had been accidentally shorted some of the testing points in the electronic circuits. The spark generated by the big filter cap or the electronic circuit section totally blown that had caused them not bold enough to perform voltage testing again. For your information, voltage testing can solve lots of electronic problems fast and if you did not use this method of troubleshooting, you may have a hard time in locating fault.

Now in order for you to gain back the confident of voltage testing, i suggest that you play around with electronic project kits first that use low DC voltage. Once you are good in pinpointing fault in DC circuit then only you move on to AC circuit. Your other option would be to get someone that you know to help you in this area. If you need to pay then just pay him to learn about the voltage testing. Once you are good in voltage testing there is no limit of electronic circuits that you can test thus finding fault faster than any other method
