Issues with live recording midi

melacrusin

I’ve been using my Digitakt 2 as a midi brain for some external synths for a bit now. Just got back into it today after some time off and have been having a strange issue.

I’m using a midi keyboard for “auto channel” recording in live mode. After recording, the track sequence shows trigs have been recorded (red trigs) but they’re not triggering my external synth even though they JUST WERE when I was live recording a sequence. When I use the Digitakt for keyboard mode it also triggers my synth.

I’m using a CME U6 Midi Pro to route some midi. Midi In and Out both go to this and back to the Digitakt so I can use midi learn. Gotta be something really obvious I’m missing.

I lost my dog this afternoon

Not music related but about one of my dogs Cooper. Couple of days ago my boy Cooper started being sick whilst out in the park and could hardly walk . He’s a heavy solid boy for a Cockapoo. Back in 2013 I got him and his sister from a breeder both born 05/12/2013 there was only 2 pups and I wasn’t taking one without the other so I brought them both home with me.
However I had a routine vets appointment this morning and also asked why he’d be sick all of a sudden on a walk so they did some blood tests this morning at the vet.
At 2pm I got a call to bring him back where I was told he had a massive tumour in his stomach and that he wouldn’t last a few more days I was like “WTF this was just a checkup” but even tho he was a fit boy he was 13yrs old and so I took the decision to take the vets advice. I had about 20 minutes with him whilst his sister played with him a bit then the vet came and asked if I’m ready. I said reluctantly ok… I held my Cooper as the needle went in, it was fast within seconds he was gone. What hurt the most is that he had recently went deaf and I thought the poor guy doesn’t even know what’s happening to him. I walked in to that vets today with 2 dogs and came out with 1…
Absolutely devastated.
I’ll be sure to make a fuss of his sister as she’s also 13yrs old but both were fit dogs you never know what’s around the corner.
So tonight there’s me and the baby girl and Ava my German Shepard missing our boy

R.I.P Cooper 05/12/2013 - 15/09/2026

I was gonna post a picture of him asleep but didn’t want to stress anyone.

Thanks

AMI-PLSYSTEMS: an L-system played as a mensuration canon (generative MIDI plugin, macOS AU/VST3)

colasanto

Hi all. I’m a composer in Mexico and this is the second plugin to come out of my doctoral thesis on algorithmic composition. AMI-PLSYSTEMS grows a melody from an L-system (you write the rewriting rule as an eight-cell word, or pick one of twelve presets named after the shape they draw) and plays it as a mensuration canon: every note you hold becomes a voice reading the same line at its own rhythmic figure, so a held chord turns into Ockeghem-style counterpoint where the voices are four speeds of one melody rather than four unrelated lines. Each voice has its own gate (from dots to overlapping lines), its own velocity cycle and its own phrase reset, and there’s a free mode that leaves the grid entirely. Hold a chord and it plays; let go and it stops.

60-second demo, no backing track, the plugin is the only sound:

Honest caveats: macOS only for now (AU MIDI FX + VST3; the Windows build is in testing), and it’s a one-person project. The trial is free for 30 days and fully functional. The first plugin in the series, AMI-POLYCHAOS, does the same thing with a chaotic map and four delayed heads. What I’d genuinely like to hear from people here is whether “the same line at four speeds” reads as counterpoint to your ears, or whether you’d rather have four independent voices. It only sends MIDI, so it’s meant to drive whatever you have, hardware included.

Background, since this forum likes it: the engine is a Max/RNBO patch exported to C++ and wrapped in JUCE with a native UI; the L-system is rewritten on every phrase reset and read by four heads at rates set per voice. I’ll post the follow-ups here (Windows build, and the third plugin of the series, which learns from a MIDI file).

Help me with ideas to complete minimalist setup

ccgenoa

Hi everyone! I’m having a bit of a creative block when it comes to expanding my small setup.

First of all, I want to keep the setup as compact and portable as possible, so I’d like to add one device at most. The whole idea is to keep everything mobile and still be able to run the entire setup through the MPC.

I play a mix of ghetto tech, minimal techno, tech house, and ambient/dub techno — stuff in the general territory of labels like Acting Press.

My current setup is:

Akai MPC One Mk1

Donner L1 (SH-101 clone, for those who aren’t familiar with it)

Arturia KeyStep

Boss BX-60 mixer

distortion and delay pedals in the mixer’s insert

The main purpose of the setup is live performance, since I do most of my actual production on a computer. But I also enjoy using it for jams at home.

The problem is that I’m constantly on the move, so whatever I add needs to be genuinely compact and portable. I don’t want to turn this into a bigger hardware setup just for the sake of having more gear.

What would you add to this setup?

I’m thinking that maybe a small polysynth could make the most sense. Something for evolving atmospheres, chords, pads, and just opening up the sound palette during jams.

But I honestly have no clear idea what’s currently available in the budget/compact polysynth market.

Budget: up to €400.

What would you guys recommend?

We have in recent months added a Kulture section to elektron.se. Here we publish all kinds of interesting content - interviews, events, video, images, and of course music.

We’ve moved our existing catalog of artist Talks here, and are happy to today publish our conversation with Roger O’Donnell - artist and keyboard player in The Cure - that took place just before the band took to the stage for their Way Out West headline slot.

I’ve been trying to control the pitch of the Syntrx mk1 via midi with the AR pads in the chromatic mode but it’s not happening. I’ve set the midi channels accordingly but no dice.
I’m under the impression the it should be possible. Any thoughts?

Another Ebay Nightmare Now Authenticity Guarantee Problems

Junkmanukuk

Hi

I dont why i keep putting myself through ebay hell they just cost me £300

Just need to vent and warn others about the absolute circus that is eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee. I’ve just had a sale completely sabotaged by them and wanted to warn anyone selling through the Authenticity Guarantee

I listed my Authentic Vintage AW 2008 Stone Island Black David-TC Lined Parka (XXL, Art: 49157149). Knowing it’s a 18 year-old jacket, I honestly listed the condition as “Good” (not excellent, not new) and priced it fairly at £300 to reflect that it’s a used, vintage piece with general wear.

I’m a seller with 1,100+ flawless positive feedback, so I know how to describe gear properly. The buyer was happy, paid up, and it went off to the authenticators.

I listed it as “Fantastic condition for its age but has some general wear but no holes or major flaws!”

Authenticator’s notes

I verified that your item is authentic.

I also observed that the item has minor issues that were not specified in the listing:

The item has more marking/stains/blemishes that were not listed or disclosed in the listing.

The transaction was completely hijacked. Some entry-level inspector who clearly has zero clue what David-TC fabric actually is put the jacket under high-intensity, enhanced laboratory ring lights. Their macro-flash photos completely washed out the deep black color of the coat, turning it into a faded grey rag on screen, scaring the buyer off over basic camera glare

Then they sent these blown-out, enhanced photos to the buyer, asked if they wanted to force me into giving a discount, and obviously scared the buyer into cancelling.

It’s an absolute joke. they are completely ignoring the condition tier and price the seller chose.

The jacket is on its way back to me in now.

Its just another example of ebays nonsense

Once ive sorted this im going to close my account ive had enough for good

Thanks

Live performance philosophy and approach

Hey everyone. I wanted to ask — or rather, invite you to a discussion, especially those of you who play live regularly.

1. Do you build your live sets from scratch, or do you play your own tracks?

Let me explain. Do you create specific material for a one-hour live set using loops, both MIDI and audio? Or do you take tracks you’ve already written, break them down into stems/loops, and perform them that way?

2. If you have a specific live project, how many times do you play it before making a new one — and what do you do with the old one?

Let’s say you have 2–3 gigs a month. Do you keep playing the same live set, or do you create something new for every party?

And when you start actively performing a new live set, do you eventually release the old one as an EP/album, or just archive it and keep it for another time?

3. What is your setup?

Do you play entirely on hardware, use loops/stems loaded into a sampler, or do you use a computer with MIDI controllers?

4. What do you do when you realize during the night that your live set isn’t going to fit the situation?

For example, the tempo or mood is completely different from what you prepared, and your set is coming up in an hour or two. Do you adapt on the fly, have some backup material, or just accept the chaos?

5. How long does it take you to prepare a one-hour live set?

And finally: do you actually prefer playing live, or, if you had the choice, would you rather play a DJ set?

Thanks everyone! I’m really interested to hear how other people approach this.

I’ll write about how I do it in the comments a little later.

Dear Elektronauts!

I just released a new preset pack for the Sequential Take 5 synth and wanted to share it with you, since I’m guessing at least a few of you will use this wonderful instrument.

A collection of 64 handmade ambient presets for the Sequential Take 5 synthesizer. From nostalgic to dreamy, From lofi to atmospheric.

The sound pack is called Dust Takes, and as the name implies, the presets lean towards a nostalgic, dreamy, lofi and atmospheric sound, but you can use them in any gerne. All sounds have a fully mapped mod matrix to generate lots of subtle movement including expressive controls like mod wheel and pressure/aftertouch. And each preset also has two effects dialed in to enhance what makes it special.

Here is a video that shows all of the presets:

There is not much more to say about it. Should this be for you, I hope you’ll enjoy the sounds a lot.

Thank you

Synth experts - I have just taken delivery of a Bree6 keyboard. Sounds great! However, the lowest C key is very loud when pressed (sound like I can hear a spring). Is this something that is likely to loosen and disappear over time or is it faulty?

What’s up Elektron community???!!!
I’ve had for a year now OP-XY and finally started to really open it up. I’m coming up with sick minimal hypnotic type tracks. I want to get your thoughts on what Elektron would best pair with it. I’m thinking one of the Digis or the Syntakt. Looking for a small foot print. Torn between samples and synth manipulation.

Hi all,

I’m looking for some new knobs for my JoMox 999 drum machine I’ve had this since 2014 still looking brand new but I want to upgrade the knobs. I emailed Jurgen at JoMox but no reply so…
I know they’re D-Shaft endless knobs but anyone know where the best place is to buy replacements and what diameter they should be?
Prefer metal if possible thanks

The 2-in/2-out option already seemed very useful, but the 10x10 option is what really got me posting. Seems great for applying basic processing to a number of tracks, outputting multiple instruments, etc.

I’m planning to use one alongside my Squarp Hapax to process older gear before it hits my mixer. Even just running a few delays/reverbs and some light mastering will be really useful. The Hapax can store the state of the modules. Mutable Instruments algorithms can be compiled for ARM 64 and this looks to be able run a few instances.

I use Prophet 12 as my main synth, i have the problem that when i change patches, their overall loudness vary quiete a bit. It depends on the role the synth plays, sometimes its small pluck, sometimes an epic lead. (Somerimes also als percussive fm tones)

Do you recommend that i synchronize my patch changes with different, compressor settings on each part?
Its a bit tedious to keep track of this. Not sure if its worthwhile.

Better sample it and gainstage it correctly, use a strong mono synth instead? Leads plucks run possibly into similar problems? Map the compressor to a midi controller and adjust if neccessary?

How do you go about live input instruments? Gainstage all patches beforehand?

Hey Verkers,

I was working on a Supervoid Reverb and then I had a sort of “Hall” that I like.
But I can’t find a way to save a “preset parameter” for the FX?

Exemple: If I need recall a Small Room, Big Room, Plate, Hall reverb of the SuperVoid reverb.
and the same for different types of Compressor, Delays parameters etc.
How do you manage that?

Thanks in advance

(I have to much notes just for the Tonverk Favorite parameters.)

Fin25

Evening pricks.

Not looking to start a general discussion about the ins and outs of sampling legalities, there’s plenty of long arse discussions about this already, so if you’re not a professional who has practical knowledge and experience of what I’m asking, go and have your opinions about copyright elsewhere.

Thanks.

Now for the advice bit.

My band has a couple of tracks that are built on very recognisable samples/loops from other artists.

One is basically a reworking of a Kanye track with different lyrics. This one isn’t going on any commercial release and will probably be given away for free for a laugh, if at all. We see it more as a live track, but it bangs pretty hard and my singer wants to release it, even if we don’t make any money off it.

The question with this one is, in the unlikely event that Kanye’s representatives get wind of it, will we be in the shit even if we’re giving it away? It’ll likely only appear on bandcamp or SoundCloud, but obviously these things have a habit of getting out into the world of track id algos…

Second one is a bit more legit. A track on our album just fits perfectly with a loop I cut out of Rae by Autechre. We want to release it and we’d hope to charge money for it, so is it still the done thing to call the record label and ask pretty please, or do people just release it, keep your mouths shut and hope for the best?

I don’t mind being honest and I’m happy to give whatever money we make away to rights holders (I’d be surprised if there’s any money to give away, but you never know…).

Those of you who have done this sort of thing, how did you go about it and what occurred?

I’m in the UK if that matters.

Managing Analog Heat Input Gain with Dynamic Instruments?

Jonny_Loneman

Hi everyone,
I’m running into a gain staging issue with the Analog Heat FX when processing individual dynamic instruments (like the Moog Labyrinth or various poly/monophonic analog synths) rather than a full master mix.
These instruments often have massive dynamic swings—whether it’s transitioning from a subtle sine wave to a harsh wavefolder, opening/closing a filter, pushing the resonance, or going from a single note to a full chord.
The Analog Heat’s input section is notoriously sensitive; to get the best signal-to-noise ratio and drive, you need to push the input level right up to the maximum threshold without clipping the converters. This creates a Catch-22:
If I set the input gain for the quieter parts: The dynamic peaks (opened filter, resonance spikes, wavefolding) brutally clip the digital input, causing harsh digital distortion.
If I set the input gain for the loudest peaks: The lower-level signals become way too quiet, failing to hit the analog drive circuit hard enough to get any meaningful saturation or tone shaping.
How do you effectively manage dynamic range and gain staging on the Analog Heat when dealing with single instruments that have huge volume fluctuations?

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Presets vs all the others. Which to choose?

I’ve had the Tonverk for a bit and have learned a lot, enough that I know I need to get organized about adding samples and whatnot to it.

But I’m struggling to know which path to take. For example when using ConvertWithMoss I have the choice of creating a preset or a multisample instrument. Do I make both?

Presets seem to be where it’s at. They have tagging & categories and search and they their own convenient button. Plus, if I modify a preset and do a save-as and I have a different version but with the same category and tags by default.

So, why not make everything a preset? Because I can’t audition them easily, although loading presets via the file menu does take a keystroke off. Also the categories are a bit scant with only “drums” and “keys”. But will that be expanded in the future?

Single samples, drum kits, multi-sample instruments can all be auditioned easily from their respective menus, but all lack tags, categories, and search. Although single samples can use directories to help with organization.

Which do you prefer to use? Do you make presets, or just work with the other forms?

Autosampled multisample always plays back as a kick

nvermind

Every autosample I run on Tonverk ends up as a ‘kick’ sound, no matter which instrument I sample.

Setup is Ableton into Tonverk via USB-C , firmware: latest.

During setup and staging the instrument plays through the Tonverk fine, I can hear it clearly while the autosampler runs. Sampling completes with no error. But when I load the recorded Multi player sound, it is a kick. Same result every time, different instruments, different ranges.

What I’ve checked so far:

Loading the result with FUNC+SRC to put a Multi player machine on the track, not through the recorder menu

Sampled across the full 0-127 range

Browsed the sample folder and the recorded files are there are all the ‘kick’ sound

INT TO MAIN off during sampling, input gain at unity

Anyone seen this? Specifically interested in whether the ‘kick’ is a default fallback sound when an .elmulti fails to load, because that would explain it.

My collaboration with Vince Clarke: The Hope

Circuit3

[Yes, I can’t quite believe I have created that topic title]
Full disclosure: there is no elektron on this track or the album but I’d like to share if that’s ok?

Taken from my new album ‘Metanoia: Music From Therapy’ this track The Hope was co-written & recorded with Vince. it is available on CD & Vinyl LP (with digital download) from circuit3.bandcamp.com on digital from mortalitytables.bandcamp.com

The first spark for the album came from a simple plan to meet for a drink after a gig. I (Circuit3) and Mat Smith from the Mortality Tables imprint ended up talking about trauma, therapy, and the parts of ourselves we usually keep out of sight. That conversation led to a small, recorded experiment which developed into an album project.

Midway through the project I was asked if I was open to collaboration with another artist. Not knowing who Mat had in mind the ‘synth blind date’ turned out to be Vince. I’m glad I said ‘yes’.

We created an 11 minute piece titled ‘The Hope’, named after the bar near Farringdon, London where that first conversation happened. Across 11 minutes, it builds a melodic drone landscape that holds both hopelessness and hope at the same time.
The album Metanoia is not a linear or predictable account of trauma, breakdown, and recovery. Instead, it moves through a series of moments and memories that surfaced during therapy.

I couldn’t find a dedicated thread for the Powerhub, so I thought it deserved one.

I’m quite looking forward to it, especially since I don’t have much space or many available power outlets. From what Elektron has shown so far, it looks like a very useful way to power several boxes from one unit.

There still doesn’t seem to be an announced release date. Since the Outbox8 has only just been released, I imagine Elektron may wait a little before launching another new accessory.
