Elements Winter Blog.

The days are getting shorter, the temperature is dropping and we have been drowning in cardboard boxes, this can only mean one thing. Winter is coming.

We have spend most of august and september processing shipments, photographing new stock and changing more rooms than Laurence llewelyn-Bowen, all in aid of getting our new A/W15 clobber online and on the shelves.

So here it's a quick blog to show you some of the goodies we have for you this Autumn/Winter.

HOMEYS.

Homeys have returned. These super comfy slippers with rubber soles (perfect for a trip to the shops.) are available in a variety of colour ways including both styles for both men and women.

BRIXTOL

Straight outta Scandinavia inspired by British mod culture Brixtol have provided us with long length bombers and jackets perfect for the chilly months ahead.

Fun fact: the name Brixtol is a mixture of Bristol and Brixton two cultural places which have heavily inspired this brand.

Elements Mens wear spring summer blog.

Summer is off to a great start in Norwich, the Radio 1 Big Weekend followed by a historical win for NCFC at Wembley! OTBC.

We have been working hard to stock lots of quality gear for S/S15.

W/O have stayed true to form this summer their lairy raver designs have been really popular this season, perfect for a mad night in Ibiza. They clearly have a knack for timing providing us with yellow/green football designs just before Norwich' big win.

This summer we have started running with @olow_trademark @mathieu_olow their range is comprised of the standard summer gear, shorts, vests, tees and light short sleeve shirts. Packed full of fresh designs with plenty of florals. Olow also has an artist series including a collaboration with @jean_jullien!

Well it's that time again folks, the icey cold weather has retreated and despite what the new Game of Thrones might say, winter has most definitely passed. So it's time to rid ourselves of thick jumpers & fur lined parkas and don some new summer apparel.

Of course we had to get some new Fila in store, despite Korean ownership the classic italian brand is still producing quality sports and casual wear with no messing about. Fila are still all about bright block colours and racing stripe lines.

Ben Sherman - The Man. The Shirt. The Brand

THE MAN. THE SHIRT. THE BRAND.

Ben Sherman is an iconic name in the industry. Described as - "...he embraced the new and the different....someone constantly searching for the best things. He dislikes regularity....He was a passionate businessman with an artist's soul."

Born Arthur Benjamin Sugarman in Brighton 1925 he left post war Britain for America to work for his father-in-laws clothing manufacturing company. It was while he applied for US citizenship that he changed his surname to Sherman - believing it to be a 'solid' American name.

He quit his job and relocated the family back home to Brighton to look after his ill mother. Without a job, Ben Sherman decided to use his clothing manufacturing experience and rented a factory in Bedford square, Brighton.

Ben started making shirts for other people but his creative flair soon took over and he started designing his own shirts. Then in 1963 he was ready to launch the first Ben Sherman shirt. And so the story begins...

THE SHIRT

The basic Ben Sherman shirt design was influenced by the classic American Ivy League shirt but Ben added the back hook, the button on the back of the collar, but most importantly his feel and passion for fabric, pattern and colour created a unique garment.

Colour,in particularly intrigued Ben, so he used Oxford fabric in pale shades, pale pink, yellow and blue. He used candy stripes, again, using pale pinks, greens and blues. Peoples’ initial reaction to all this colour was not positive, but typically Ben Sherman pushed ahead as he totally believed in his ideas.

He wanted the best quality fabrics, so the special fabrics used were all from America. He also decided to box each shirt individually, which was, in those days against the grain.

The shirts were a huge success, offering something brand new and previously unseen in England.

Interestingly it was exactly at this time that the first British youth culture was in full flow; the post war teddy boys. This movement had shown a new generation of youth that clothing could be a key indicator of their beliefs and signal their belonging to a culture or movement.

A second wave of young men came along who loved the sharp Italian style and this group went by the name of ‘ the modernists’ who quickly became known as ‘mods’. This British youth culture embraced the Ben Sherman shirt, loving it for its quality, slim-fitting style, its colour and unique design.

The feeling was that there simply had never been anything on the English scene like it. The Ben Sherman shirt was revolutionary and so was the ‘mod movement’. Through fashion and music, London and Britain were cool again, the swinging 60’s was in full flow and the atmosphere was europhic.

Ben Sherman opened a showroom on Carnaby street and soon afterwards opened 2 stores in London as well as a store in Brighton (his Brighton store was called ‘millions of shirts inc. ltd) Ben Sherman could not produce shirts fast enough and orders often exceeded production capacity. It is famously quoted that in 1970 Ben Sherman ordered a million yards of oxford cloth, a quarter of a million of gingham fabric and a quarter of a million yards of colourful striped material from his American fabric mill. This is testament to the popularity of the Ben Sherman shirt.

THE LEGACY

Now having existed for 5 decades the Ben Sherman shirt and brand have been adopted by almost every youth culture or style movement of the last 5 decades, from the mods , to 2 tone and ska, to brit pop and is today still worn by the current bands and style leaders of the current decade.Ben Sherman is full of swagger. It exudes Britishness and personal pride. A Ben Sherman shirt with its top button done up is a deliberate statement. A message that has lasted since 1963...

WELCOME BACK TO AN OLD SKOOL CLASSIC FOR SPRING 2014...

Spring is finally here and our new Spring/Summer collections have steadily been arriving - introducing new brands for the first time alongside our usual suspects. But back by popular demand this season is Fila Vintage. After a three year break and 'relentless badgering' from you lot this old skool classic brand is back on the rails. And what a reaction its had so far!

After a short break the guys at Fila Vintage are back. Keeping the brand to just a few selected stores in the UK, the collection is smaller and much more concise than previous ones. Keeping close to its 'Casuals' influence it features many classic polos and track tops and the infamous tennis short.

The origins of Fila can be traced back to 1911 from a textiles company in the Italian town of Biella - the home of the finest Italian fabrics for more than 600 years.

But it wasn't until 1973 when Fila launched its first tennis collection - Fila White Line, that began an era for the brand of unrivalled success. Fila White Line revolutionized the sportswear market with its bold use of colours and design that hadn't been seen before. It fast became a firm favourite of Italian Playboys and aspirational sportsman. It became a global brand.

No one was more influential in its rapid rise than Bjorn Borg.

Already established as a tennis superstar, Borg and Fila White Line were a perfect match. Fila introduced a new premium line - Fila Bjorn Borg, which featured the iconic Matchday and Terrinda track jackets - each with their own Borg insignia.

With Borg's domination of the tennis arena and his epic battles with his fierce competitor - John McEnroe - who himself was affiliated with Filas nearest sportswear rival - Segio Tacchini - made the brand a must have for any discerning gent. It crossed the boundary between sportswear and elite fashion.

This appeal grew, especially in the footballing fraternity known as the 'Casuals'. Back in the early 1980's when small bands of football supporters travelled across Europe following their team it wasn't just the football that was important - it was what you wore. To be a 'Casual', to be accepted in your 'Crew' - you had to wear the proper attire.

These small bands of working class lads found exclusive sportswear clothes in Italian boutiques that no one else in England was wearing. Labels such as Ellesse, Diadora, Sergio Tacchini and of course - Fila White Line. The rest is history. Fila became the iconic wear for any die hard 'Casual' and his crew. They became the elite.

Fast forward twenty years and Fila became resurgent again. Films such as Nick Love's 'The Football Factory', 'The Business' and 'The Firm' not only reacquainted it to the original 'Casual' but also introduced it to a new generation of label hungry lads. They realised Fila wasn't just a brand for the sake of looking cool. It had meaning, it had a history. It was a aspiring brand. Just like the generation before, they would blow most of their weekly wage on a new Fila top on a Friday afternoon, go out that night and try and pull the bird who caught their eye the week before...Some things never change.

Gabicci Vintage - Celebrating Forty Years Of Heritage...

This year Gabicci celebrate forty years in menswear since opening their basement doors in their Maddox Street store in London - 1973.

Since the 70's, Gabicci has played its part in the music and youth culture in the UK. Worn by the likes of the Specials, Bob Marley, Don Letts and more recently Labrinth and Maverick Sabre. Gabicci has been popular by many influential youth movements, tribes and icons from the Mods, the Casuals, Northern Soul to Acid Jazz Boys, Suede Heads and Rastas.

Brought back to UK by its original founders Jack Sofier and Alex Psyer, Gabicci's appeal simply comes down to its definitive 'look'. With its Italian styling mixed with its attention to detail, unique fabrics, buttons - as well as the iconic gold 'G' - Gabicci, has slowly come back to the fore. Grabbing the attention of a new generation, eager to wear the clothes, as well as learn about its history. Gabicci has always remained true to its roots while experimenting and collaborating to keep it relevant.

This Autumn/Winter 2013, to mark their 40th anniversary, Gabicci have developed, designed and collaborated with legendary DJ and Record Producer Norman Jay. One of the most influential music pioneers in Britain over the last two decades.

The idea behind this small capsule collection is to reflect what Gabicci Vintage has meant to Norman Jay. Its a very personal reworking of the brand with classic styles re-designed under the title 'Forty Years Of Soul'.

With Norman Jay's affinity to Northern Soul, it was an easy fit. With Gabicci's slim fits and the bold gold 'G', Gabicci was a brand that typified the Northern Soul music scene back in the 1970's. Gabicci, with its suede trim and extra fly collar, was supposed to be for the more discerning gent walking down the golf course not the inner-city kids like Norman Jay of Brixton and Hackney. They didn't care. With the look completed by the complimentary snakeskin shoes, full length leather jacket, slacks and gold chain and sovereign ring - Gabicci was firmly established as a 'must have'.

This new collaboration is set firmly in Norman Jay's memories of the brand. Epitomising the styles of the times. The colours and the cardigans, Its old skool for a new generation - but its also like getting acquainted with an old friend.

Introducing New Brands For Autumn 2013...

Autumn is finally here and our new collections are coming in thick and fast. Alongside our established labels we've put our 'best foot forward' and searched extensively for new brands for the store in Autumn/Winter 2013.

There are so many quality labels under the radar at the moment that we've been spoilt. From new British based labels to international ones, we always try stay one step ahead of the game and looking for that hidden gem. In this blog we just want in introduce three of the new brands for Autumn/Winter.

PARKA LONDON

This is PARKA LONDON's debut season. And we're lucky enough to be one of only a handful of selected stockists. PARKA designs a modernist twist on what is a classic parka outerwear piece. Believers in that 'detail'' and the 'small quirks count' like fur hoods. luxe linings and secret drawstrings make a coat a PARKA LONDON coat.

J-SHOES

J SHOES are a British footwear brand founded in the Midlands inspired by the heritage of shoemaking. Working with classic designs like the brogue and welted boot, J SHOES add distinct detailing to each design like contrasting laces but never loses sight of maintaining their high standards. So far the reaction in store has been brilliant. They will soon be part of our staff uniform.

MINIMUM

This Danish label, established in 1997, has become a huge international player. Still relatively unknown in the UK, MINIMUM oozes with Scandinavian cool, under stated design and functionality. Inspired by contemporary urban trends its been an instant hit in the store. Easy to wear and easy on the pocket - we think MINIMUM is going to around for a while.

These and many more brands are new to ELEMENTS this season. Next time we get a chance to add a blog we will feature the other new brands that will be in the store for the first time this Autumn.

Superga - The Discerning Gent's Summer Essential...

Summer seems like its has finally hit us, its currently 16 degrees so we class that as summer, we'll be featuring key pieces that are any discerning gents summer essentials...

Intoducing Superga, also known as the 'Peoples shoe of Italy' are a traditionally simplistic pump.

The epic story of Superga begins in 1911 Turin, where the aim was to produce a shoe with vulcanized rubber soles, resulting in what we know today as the classic Superga 2750.

A pretty mild start to winter resulted in Elements having a few of the heavier pieces left in stock with loads of classic styles from Schott, Scotch and Soda, Henri Lloyd and Supreme Being .

A strong traditional feel this year with beautiful dufflecoats and vintage parkas, paired up with the classic alpine/nordic knitwear giving you a complete "outside" outfit.

The mix of styles this year has really matched Elements' ethos of classic pieces with a quirky twist . We had a strong sell-through on Farah and Gabicci vintage ranges this season and have limited stock on both ranges . Again, both of these brands are both well known in the wardrobes of the UK and have provided a welcome return to the heritage look .

A great selection of footwear this year has been a revelation to us with a fantastic response to the Jeffery West collection and a near sell-out of brogue boots and shoes from Paolo Vandini.

We came back to Palladium, the iconic French footwear artisans , and have some left in the Sale,ideal for this weather.

To wrap it up,just to say that we are now in Full Sale with many of our items up to 70% off the original price. Peckham Rye London - British Ties, Scarves and Clothing

At Elements we have a great selection of ties and scarves and with over 200 years heritage of fine tailoring, Peckham Rye sure know how to produce garments with enduring style and exceptional finish all of course made from high quality materials. The name Peckham Rye comes from the Cockney rhyming slang for ‘tie’ and just like their name, the history of the company is steeped in London history. Their rich heritage in Britain’s capital city extends from East End origins at the start of the eighteenth century.

The Peckham Rye story begins back in 1813 when Tommy McCarthy started out as a tailor in London. Six generations down the line and all the traditions, craft and styling of the true London cut remain. During the years the family had been involved with many trades within the clothing world besides gentlemen’s tailoring. Another new brand in store for this Autumn/Winter 2012 is Jeffery West. Established by childhood friends Guy West and Mark Jeffery in Northahampton,England - the centre of the British shoemaking tradition. At the age of 16 and influenced by their home town and the fact that Mark Jeffery's father owned a shoe factory the pair began to design and sell their own shoes in London's Keningston Market."Mark and I would buy rejects and ends of lines from his dad’s factory and other factories, customise them and sell them on.” - Guy West

From the start, Jeffery West shoes would typify the craftsmanship, quality and pedigree of all the years experience of shoe manufacturing Northampton represented. They would use welt cutting edge styles, develop new lasts and innovate the use of new colours and leathers that was lacking in a top end mens shoes. "You do get people who turn their nose up at us a bit because we’re making shoes in Northampton but they’re not the traditional toe-cap Oxford, or classic Brogue, but why on earth would we want to try to be Crockett and Jones, Trickers, or Church’s, they’re already doing it; if you want a classic English shoe, I wouldn’t hesitate to say go and buy one from Crockett and Jones, Trickers, or Church’s, whereas if you come to us you’re buying that manufacturing history but it’s with our handwriting, our twist, our slant on it.” - Guy West

One of many brands new to the store for this Autumn/Winter is Knowledge Cotton Apparel. Based in Herning, Denmark - Knowledge Cotton Apparel is a family run business in the truest sense. Founded by J Morup Stof in 1969 the brand has fourty years worth of heritage that has focused in on design, innovation, responsible environmental practise and a passion for quality that has lasted.

They focus on these four areas: Knowledge - gain experience in producing the best product in the best environmental way and passing those lessons on.Cotton - hence the name. Cultivated through 7000 years of human history it is still integral to our lives. Apparel: Not resting on their forty years of experience, Knowledge Cotton always want to push the boundaries. Owl: The brand logo. It represents the family behind the brand - honest, natural and approachable. The owl is recognised worldwide as keen, smart and brave in nature and with great vision. Knowledge Cotton aim to parallel this.

When we first went to see the A/W collection in their showroom in London back in February it was obvious that Knowledge Cotton a quality product. We were really impressed that their convictions to produce outstanding clothing did not compromise their ideals of being environmental viable too. For example, the denim range uses only 10 percent of the amount of water any other denim manufacturer uses to create their various denim washes. The cotton used in all the garments is hand picked and 100 percent organic.

Knowledge Cotton Apparel is a complete clothing range, from premium knitwear and outerwear to double layered shirting, socks and accessories. The amazing fact for us ,as retailers, was the fact that we could re order stock or introduce new styles in-season within a couple of days - even though we have to deal direct from Denmark. With Knowledge Cotton Apparel nothing is too much trouble.

The Knowledge Cotton family is steeped in tradition and a knowledge to create premium garments that are 'being good to the environment and good for humanity' Elements are extremely proud to showcase KCA this season.

New Herschel Autumn Drop

Here at elements we've just received delivery from Herschel Supply co with some cracking new bags and accessories from their fall 2012 collection. Whatever your need for a bag may be we've got you covered, so whether you require a messenger bag with plenty of storage room and space to keep your 15" laptop safe on your travels the new Totem bag is ideal, in either black or army (shown below).

Or maybe you need a new rucksack to haul your gear around in and want to stand out a bit then go for the new Heritage bag in orange/tan (shown below) with a striking red paisley inner lining.

If that's not your cup of tea then not to worry as we have plenty of other styles and colour variations from the Standard black bag through to the Heritage army/tan bag. Also in the newest drop are new colour ways in the Standard/Settlement/Heritage and Pop Quiz bags. As well as some great new bags we also have a nice selection of accessories to complete the look.
