Ted Mann, digital media director for Gannett newspapers in New Jersey, was the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Jewish Community Voice of Southern New Jersey in Voorhees, Camden County, on June 1, 2011. Mann discussed the digital changes and technology innovations rocking the news media industry, and its impact on traditional print newspapers. Mann was introduced by Steve Lubetkin, managing partner of Lubetkin Global Communications, who is the Voice’s technology columnist.

A sad postscript to the cautionary comments in Ted’s keynote is the post on his blog July 10, announcing that he had killed Gannett’s hyperlocal effort, InJersey.com, with a detailed explanation of why it went dark.

On Oct 2nd and 3rd, 2010, Temple University will once again host the area’s largest digital media unconference.  A PodCamp  is a BarCamp-style community UnConference for podcasters and listeners, bloggers and readers, as well as anyone interested in New / Social Media. (A BarCamp style UnConference means that the participants are also the experts and the speakers.)

First held in Boston, Massachusetts, Podcamp has spread across the United States and the world to bring people of all backgrounds and abilities together to teach and learn from each other. Recent events have included Pittsburgh, Toronto, New York City, Munich, Atlanta, San Antonio and Stockholm.

“The purpose of PodCamp is to share information, build and grow relationships and grow the new media community.  This type of event encourages interactivity, Q&A’s and sessions that are dialogues versus monologues.  Topics range from beginner to expert and hobby to business in several tracks including podcasting, blogging, social media and technical,” said event co-organizer Lynette Young.

Summaries of some of the sessions can be found on the PodCamp Philly website.  A full schedule will be posted prior to the event.  The attendee generated content will have something for everyone whether you are focused on learning for personal or professional use.

As you know if you’ve followed our Tweets over the past week, we’ve been crisscrossing New  Jersey interviewing residents about consumer choice in electricity generation service. The electricity market is now competitive for residential customers, and today, our client Constellation Energy of Baltimore, announced its residential offer for New Jersey, which was accompanied by the video we produced. We used our “social media” video equipment for this project, a Kodak Zi8 high definition pocket-sized camcorder, and a lavaliere microphone, an easy kit to transport and not at all intimidating to the residents who agreed to be interviewed. This is a great example of our ElevatorPitchVideos concept of short social media style interview videos that give a sense of place and message. We don’t believe in green screen for business videos, we believe in real live environments.

Kudos to Constellation, which is using Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube as well as a custom landing site for NJ residents to sign up for the new electricity service.

Crusty Fungus, street musicians, perform on the Long Branch, NJ, Boardwalk

Crusty Fungus, a local group of street musicians, was performing on the Long Branch, NJ boardwalk when we were there on August 19. This video contains one song, and the lyrics include some profanity and drug references. The band makes frequent street appearances, as evidenced by these photos from a recent appearance in Red Bank.
