Back in November 2025 my friend Sam from Yuth Sportsgear and Thai-T-shirt factory invited me to go to an WBC conference event, I had a small both there and managed to speak to a few stars of boxing yor, the one the stood out the most was Roberto Duran, I sat with him for over an hour as he waited to go to the airpot to fly back to Panama for Christmas. I bought him and his 2 Sons a coffee. I was impressed with Sam hob nobbing with all the big cheeses of the boxing world and also make a bespoke pair of shoes for the world smallest boxer from Austrila Jame the Giant. Then came the Tyson Fury order. I met him in Pattaya at Fraisors Sports bar and had him measured up below

fast forward a month or so and me and Sam bought out a small shoe factory and moved all teh machine to Pattaya to be next door to his factory, then I was invited down to Fraziors sports bar where I measured up Tyson Fury and Joseph Parker. Tyson selected Chelsea boots for his first order.

Tyson has Hammer toes and so I have removed some leather from the midsole so less space need to be above.

I predicted that Tyson would not like a full leather sole due to the slippage and so we used a rubber patch and then nailed in TF

Update, I bought tickets to see his fight in Pattaya, treated myself to the front row, as that aint ever going to happen to me again, The fight was ok, not great, I knew what to expect, Lasted 6 rounds, The other fighter called Wach failed to come out for the 7th. The other fights on the car were pretty much terrible, Noboday was getting a fee or a very small fee and so many of the fighters just quite when they wanted an out. the final fight lasted 28 seconds and the german fighter took the biggest hiT ive ever soon.

We ended up making 2 more pairs for Tyson. a black crocodile derby and a goat skin oxford.

Don’s Footwear Bespoke Bi-material Single Monkstrap with Crocodile Vamps & Heel Cap

When talking about the pinnacle of leather shoes, it is impossible to avoid the word Bespoke.

Bespoke, or “Be Spoken For,” conveys the idea that an item (or materials such as fabric or leather) in a tailor’s or shoemaker’s workshop has already been reserved - specifically to be crafted for a single wearer. This means that every detail can be chosen by the customer, and of course, the shape and proportions of the garment or shoe are made exclusively for that individual.

In fact, before the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, nearly all leather shoes were bespoke. Most men in those days did not own many pairs of shoes, and every pair was made strictly for practical use. The process began with the creation of a last - a shoe form based on the actual anatomy of the wearer’s foot - followed by design and construction through the experience and skills of the shoemaker. Naturally, each pair was neither cheap nor a luxury item; rather, it reflected a production process driven purely by craftsmanship and the wearer’s needs.

As industrial shoemaking gained prominence, last development shifted toward mass production - aiming for volume and a fit that was “good enough” for most people, but not “the best” for anyone in particular. Craftsmanship gradually gave way to machinery, and leather shoes became mass-produced goods across many price points, quality levels, and designs. Traditional bespoke shoes slowly faded from public awareness.

In truth, bespoke shoes sit near the bottom of the hierarchy of men’s attire necessities. The best possible shoe fit is not as aesthetically or sensorially critical as the fit of a bespoke suit. If one already finds a last that is comfortable and suits their foot well, creating a bespoke last may not be strictly necessary. Even many prominent menswear writers, influencers, and respected shoe experts agree that bespoke shoes are less essential than a bespoke suit.

That said, as someone who truly loves leather shoes, the idea of bespoke footwear is something I often think about. In terms of ultimate traditional shoemaking, nothing surpasses bespoke - except for the time and cost involved! It is a desire that demands significant effort, money, and patience, especially since most bespoke shoemakers are foreigners with workshops located abroad.

That was until I came to know Don’s Footwear Bespoke and Allen Donnelly, a Scottish lastmaker with a Thai heart.

Discovering Don’s Footwear

I still remember clearly the first time I saw Don’s Footwear around 2015–2016, during the pioneering days of Thailand’s classic menswear scene. Their showroom was located at Mahanakhon Cube, which I passed in the evening after work during my corporate days. The shop had a New York–lounge atmosphere, and, at a time when good leather shoes in Thailand were as rare as transparency in the country’s democratic system, it was very inviting. Unfortunately, the shop was closed that day, and I didn’t get the chance to learn more about the brand.

Perhaps it was fate, or simply the small world of Thailand’s shoe community, that brought me back to Don’s Bespoke later, through reviews by Khun Da of Shineable and Justin’s The Shoe Snob blog. I learned that the brand had begun making true bespoke shoes with genuine bespoke lasts. That was when my hope of owning a bespoke pair was reignited.

I must admit, at first I was quite skeptical. Could the brand truly make bespoke lasts? Would the quality be good? Lastmaking is no easy task, it is practically its own discipline of art. A lastmaker must deeply understand shoe construction, foot anatomy, foot shapes, measurement techniques, the balance between comfort and support, and even allow for how the foot changes throughout the day.

But my first meeting with Allen Donnelly nearly two years ago dispelled many of my doubts.

Allen Donnelly is Scottish by birth. He was originally an engineer before falling in love with shoes. He founded Don’s Footwear in 2009 and later settled in Thailand. The brand initially focused on RTW and MTO elevator shoes, height-increasing shoes designed to look like normal footwear, and gradually expanded into various styles.

By the mid-2010s, Allen told himself, “If I want to make the best shoes, I have to do it myself.” He traveled extensively to learn from master shoemakers and lastmakers. In 2017, he studied lastmaking with a legendary lastmaker from John Lobb St. James, learned pattern-making from senior Asian craftsmen, and studied pegged-waist construction with the late Swedish master Janne Melkersson.

Combined with his design instincts and willingness to experiment, Allen went on to place 5th in the world at an international shoemaking competition in 2025, a remarkable achievement given the extremely high standards of the top 10.

Today, Allen is well known among global shoe bloggers and influencers, on a first-name basis with many legendary bespoke shoemakers. He owns his own RTW/MTO factory, a bespoke workshop with high-level lastmaking know-how, and also runs The Last Shoemaker, one of the world’s first brands specializing in bespoke barefoot shoes designed around natural foot anatomy.

Stepping into Allen’s workshop feels like entering another world, one dominated by shoes, leather, lasts, and tools.

The Bespoke Process

We began with foot measurements. Allen uses traditional methods: tape measures, ink, pens, and several specialized tools to measure 6–7 points on the foot, as well as foot height, instep, heel, and any irregularities. The goal is to create a last that hugs the foot as perfectly as possible.

After measurements comes traditional hand lastmaking, no different from creating a piece of sculpture. Beyond translating foot dimensions into a three-dimensional wooden form, the lastmaker must also incorporate artistic design: toe shape, balance between forefoot and heel, and the equilibrium between aesthetics and comfort.

I was genuinely excited when I first saw my last, featuring a sharp chisel toe.

Fitting and Design

Once the last was completed (a process taking about 1–3 months), we moved on to the first fitting. Allen devised an innovative fitting tool: a molded plastic heel section shaped from the last.

After confirming the fit, we moved on to upper design. One of the greatest advantages of bespoke shoes is being involved from the very beginning, though it also requires understanding the designer’s character. Successful bespoke shoes result from the perfect combination between the shoemaker’s skill, experience, design sense, and the client’s desires. I chose a single monkstrap, which I felt suited the last perfectly.

The bespoke pattern was drawn directly onto the last, then converted into cutting patterns, entirely new since it was a bespoke last.

Trial Shoes

Next came the trial shoes, created to evaluate real-world fit. Though this step can be skipped, I wanted the full experience.

The trial shoes fit very well. Though materials and finishing were basic, since they also served as training work for apprentices, the shoes were fully wearable, featuring a closed channel sole and hand-welted construction.

On foot, the arch support was exceptional, the heel snug, though the cut was very close, requiring thin dress socks, as intended for a dress shoe.

A minor pinch on my left foot near the middle toe was corrected, and the last was refined into its final form.

For the final pair, Allen chose goat leather and crocodile leather, a choice I was secretly thrilled about.

Ordering bespoke shoes is very different from buying off the shelf. It requires patience and trust in the craftsman. But when everything comes together, the result can be spellbinding, like this single monkstrap, blending boldness with elegant flowing lines.

On Foot & Styling

The shoes proved exceptionally comfortable, even after wearing them for two consecutive 16-hour days at the Singapore Super Trunk Show 2026. No hot spots, no fatigue.

Though dressy due to the chisel toe and slim waist, the monkstrap design, mixed leathers, and apron stitching make them versatile for semi-formal and business-casual wear.

World Shoemaking Championship 2025

Our 5th submission to the world championship in Shoemaking 2025 is the Toasted Marshmallow Double Monk Strap. And the good news is that the Article is now on Shoegazing

While working on what was meant to be the final version of this shoe, my workshop was devastated by a fire that destroyed the shoe itself — you can see the attached photo. This setback left me with just two weeks to craft a new version. Out of that challenge, and the determination it sparked in me and my team, the design evolved: what was once called the Marshmallow Double Monk became the Toasted Marshmallow Double Monk.

This double monk strap shoe is crafted from a deep, rich brown aniline leather that exudes sophistication. Its distinctive angular toe shape gives the upper a refined yet eye-catching character. Elevating the design further is the hand-embroidered beadwork along the piping and buttons, created by master Thai embroiderer Jib Blouin. Each bead is meticulously stitched in a randomized pattern using two shades of brown, accented with gold for subtle brilliance. The Cufflink/buttons themselves are embroidered in the same style, featuring a contrasting green and purple motif. All of this is unified by the upper’s exquisite high polish.

The playfulness of the Toasted Marshmallow Double Monk continues in the sole: composed of five layers of hollowed-out vegetable- barked tanned leather, it creates a striking stacked effect that symbolizes the layered journey of the design through the competition. When flipped over, the sole reveals its inner depth and the level of detail poured into the shoe from top to bottom.

The Toasted Marshmallow Double Monk stands as a testament to persistence, craftsmanship, and the will to overcome adversity — a creation that my team and I are deeply proud to present for this competition.

My Journey to the World Championships of Shoemaking 2023

Hello, everyone. I’m Allan Donnelly, the founder and owner of Don's Footwear and The Last Shoemaker, We are a bespoke shoemaking company based in Thailand and York UK. In this blog post, I want to share with you my experience of participating in the World Championships of Shoemaking 2023, where I submitted a boot that came 21st out of 30 entries.

The World Championships of Shoemaking is an international contest organized by Shoegazing and The Shoe Snob, in collaboration with Kirby Allison the Youtuber and Master Shoemakers, the Bookywook, with support from Parker Schenecker (I met his brother back in 2022). It’s a prestigious event that showcases the best craftsmanship and creativity in the shoemaking industry. The final takes place during the London Super Trunk Show on May 13th, 2023, where the top three shoes go on a world tour and the winner receives £6,000.

This year, for the first time, the contestants had to make a boot instead of a shoe. The theme was a balmoral boot in black, which is a classic and elegant style that can be worn with formal or casual outfits. The boot had to be made by hand using traditional methods and materials, and it had to demonstrate high quality, originality, and innovation.

I decided to enter the competition again for the 3rd time because I love a challenge and I wanted to test my teams skills and learn from other shoemakers. I also wanted to represent Dons and The Last Shoemaker and show our passion and dedication to our craft. It was a long and stressful process, but also very rewarding and fun.

I started by making the boot last, which was plastic form this time( that gives shape to the boot). I wanted to create a distinctive silhouette that would stand out from the rest. I chose a large toe box that gave the boot a 70’s glam look, inspired by rock stars like David Bowie and Mick Jagger. I also made the heel slightly higher than usual, to add some flair and attitude.

Next, I designed the pattern, which is the paper template that determines how the leather pieces are cut and stitched together. I opted for a simple and sleek design that emphasized the balmoral line, which is the seam that runs along the ankle and separates the upper from the lower part of the boot. I also added some subtle details like broguing and medallion on the toe cap, to give some texture and contrast.

Then, I handed over the last and the pattern to my staff in our factory of seven, who made the rest of the boot. They cut the leather pieces from high-quality black calf leather, skived them to reduce thickness, punched holes for stitching and lacing, assembled them with waxed linen thread, lasted them over the last with nails and glue, welted them with leather strips, attached them to a triple welt sole with wooden pegs, trimmed and sanded them to shape, stained them with black dye, polished them with wax and brushes, and finished them with metal toe taps and heel plates.

It took over two months to make the boot, and we made three prototypes before we were satisfied with the final product. We had to overcome many challenges along the way, such as finding the right balance between fit and style, adjusting the tension and alignment of the seams, ensuring durability and comfort of the sole, and achieving a smooth and shiny finish.

We submitted our boot online by sending photos and videos of it from different angles, along with a description of our design choices and techniques. We also shipped our boot to London for physical inspection by the judges. The judges were [names of judges], who are all renowned experts in shoemaking. They evaluated our boot based on four criteria: construction (40%), design (30%), finish (20%), and overall impression (10%).

We received our results by email a few weeks later. We were thrilled to learn that we came 21st out of 30 entries. We scored [your scores] out of 100 points for each criterion. The judges gave us positive feedback on our originality, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. They also gave us constructive criticism on how we could improve our balance, proportion, symmetry, and consistency.

We were very proud of our achievement and grateful for the opportunity to participate in this prestigious competition. We learned a lot from this experience and we gained more confidence in our abilities. We also enjoyed seeing the amazing work of other shoemakers from around the world. We congratulate [name of winner] for winning the competition with his/her stunning boot.

We want to thank everyone who supported us along this journey: our staff, our customers, our suppliers, our friends, our family, and our fans. We couldn’t have done it without you. Hello.

I hope you have all been well in 2022. It's been a while since Ive made my last blog post, As you all know I started this blog is 2008 as a way to get by while waiting for my first order of shoes to be created. Back in those days, I expected another factory to make my shoes for me, little did I know I would quickly come to own my own shoemaking factory.

Around that time 2008, I started to follow a blog called the Shoe Snob blog and have always dreamed that one day I would get a mention by Justin Fitzpatrick the owner and winter. Over the years his authority and influence on the shoe industry have grown and grown, and now he is regarded as the best source of quality footwear content. That's why I am so proud and happy to be finally featured on his website and social media channels.

The best part for me is that we both started out at the same time and so it's always been interesting to follow another man's journey in the same field. Here is a link to his review

Its about time that I started work on a newer and better collection of causla shoes, I cant make the athletic shoes as that's a whole different constuction process. Ive had a few idea's these past few years and now is the time to act on it.

We made him a fully bespoke pair of shoes so that he could review and share the experience of creating a fiddle waist pair of handwelted shoes. I'm really happy with the outcome, His blog really is a deep dive into the bespoke process, and the way we undertake the order.

Maybe you might not know but we once had a Showroom at the Mahanakon building in the Sathorn area just under dean and deLuca This was ideal at the time to showcase of designs and workmanship, but this time, having a workshop and showroom in the same building is a tremendous help. we will be located very near On Nut Skytrain station which I think a lot of people have heard about.

Guiddo Maggio or Don's Footwear?

Every once in a while I get an email asking why I am the best at elevator shoes, or who is the best between Don's Footwear and the Guiddo Maggio brand from Italy.

I have recently concluded that I get asked this question simply because customers tend to glance at the price difference between us both and think because GM is more expensive it means they are a better shoe. I know we all do not have the time to understand the finer aspects of shoemaking or to discover the skills and technique involved in creating a top tier shoe and with little time in our lives, we tend to just go on prices. Generally, it goes like this..If the price is too high we fear its just middlemen getting a cut, too low it seems there might be an issue later on after the purchase ( to good to be true)

Well I would say a higher price plays a part in what type of business that you are buying from:

Own factory selling via retailer
Own factory and sell in own channels DON'S FOOTWEAR
From another’s factory and sell through retailers
From someone else’s factory and sell in their own channels Guiddo Maggio

I believe Don's have the ultimate set-up. Because we own both our Brand and our channel. and that also helps Don's to offer a better price. In our factory we only created for our own brand, we dont need to create other labels to support our own factory our full attention and priority is on our own Brand. I know of only one other that created their own shoes and I believe it’s a Spanish brand, Guido Maggio outsources to another factory, that I know because I’ve had another factory contact me to ask if they wish to make shoes for us.

When it comes to premium custom made Owing your own factory is a must and gives a chance to create a better custom shoe, and have a better understanding over a marketer. We have been able to do that from the beginning. So, who is better? Well, Im slightly biased, but I would say we are better than Guiddo Maggio simply because Don's came along first, We started in 2005 and launched in 2009. The owner of Guiddo Maggio first came to me for advice around 2010 via a few phone calls on Skype, then slowly over time copied my styles, then managed to get my old webmaster to sell him my contact list. that's how he managed to get himself going, My family and friends still get his promotional emails from to this day, He always tends to copy things that I do a few months or years later, Trunk Shows, Styles, Website design, Content. I always laugh to myself when my good friend and loyal webmaster mentions to me what they have been up, Italians tend to say they are unique when it comes to design and they are always in competition with the French over who is the best at class and style and I believe they are the best in the world at that sort of thing, And so to have this guy trailing me ( a Scotsman), following my moves, its kind of cool haha.

The GM brand often like to criticize us that we are made in SEA in their blog posts and so I guess this is my long-awaited reply,, His only unique selling point is they are made in Italy, however, Its a huge problem in Italy that many shoes uppers are made in awful conditions across the water in the Slavic countries and shipped over and assembled in Italy ( there is a youtube video on the problem here) . Then next there is a problem with the Leather tannery Labour condition in Tuscany. So all in all, I don't think a Made in Italy statement beats a real Shoemaker like myself.

Don’s Footwear make everything in house. Except for the leather tanning which I buy from a Japanese owned tannery that has a high level of quality control as they supply to the entire Japanese police force and all leather must be tested regularly. I also make bespoke shoes, which is regarded as the creme de la creme of shoemaking And our bespoke offerings are made always in the west end bespoke way,, A wooden last needs to be created, shaped and labelled for the client use only, bespoke patterns are made, test pairs are made before going onto making the final pair. These are the best pair of shoes I've ever had. I'm glad I took advice from the Karavel shoe expert. He told me I'd need exact measurements for my wide (while short) feet. These don't hurt at all and don't need that excessive break-in, I usually do for size 8 shoes. because the instep is too low and the shoe is way too narrow.

HOLY MOLY!!! DAM NICE BOOTS!!! I just got the D.O.N.S Issue 1. They are bad ass. I had asked for a combo leather/rubber sole on the site option and got them in all rubber sole, but no worries. I do like how well the rubber grips the floor for traction. The feeling of the platforn of the agoe is flawless. It does NOT feel at all like an elevator shoe. Dam Allan, no words, you are just kicking ass my friend. PROPS!!

I wanted to update you it was my dad‘s birthday yesterday and I gave him the boots and he was actually speechless he could not believe the height and the comfort in comparison to what he has worn in the past honestly he did not know what to say. He wants me to thank you and tell you that you are a true artist.

I just recieved the boots, they fit perfectly and are so damn comfortable I don't think I really need to take them off haha.

I am very impressed with the quality of the leather. This and the style alone are worth every penny. In comparison to my old cowboy boots that I used with a cheap height increase insert for years, MST is a much more comfortable design. Walking feels natural, and that's all a good shoe/boot needs to do.

I hope you are doing well during this crazy Covid time my friend. I think I am hitting a decade of being your customer. I just placed an order for your D.O.N. issue 1. I am also going to get the Minimalist lowtop and a few pairs to update my Don's collection in the coming months.

It is awesome that you decided to add this style type to your offering. I have been hoping to see an offering exactly like this casual look for a while from Don's. Your shoes are TOP of the food chain. Everytime I wear shoes from your collection, and that is pretty much always, I get compliments. hi allen . just received the boots and im not just saying this but they are just beautiful . I mean I could instantly see the quality as I was un wraping them and was kind of shocked . they put the other shoes I bought to shame .I love the high shaft colour style everything and they fit perfect and feel very comfortable . can be worn casual or with a suit . if I don't get a woman in these they are all gay . that's the long and the short of it . We have been measuring the traditional way these past 5 years but now we use a rather large modern foot scanner. Do elevator shoes really work with our foot scanner? Well, Not yet. Shoe Last making

So it comes to shoe last making I usually choose the wider of the two feet and then I'll do that side first. It's always best to do the wider foot first. If you the reason is that that sets the tone for the narrower foot. Like for instance, when looking at feet sometimes you see that the right foot is slightly wider than the left foot. that's why its best to start with the right one first. However, what is important to remember is do you select the numbers or the shape; to be honest, the shape always wins.

Have you ever had a pair of shoes that were too short? Or a shoe that's conversely too long. The pivot point or a tread point that something that must look at on the shoe lasts, It needs to match it to the foot, and so I find using the Patogragrah print, that will show the tread point, I hold the paperwork under the last to make sure its a match, it will correspond to the drawing.

I once read a book by Ferragamo called The Shoemaker of Dreams, I must say He doesn't get enough of a mention in the bespoke world these days as the brand is more of a fashion house. , he created so many systems and techniques with shoe last making and shoes, He brought the industry forward. For me, this is a fascinating part of making footwear is the last making part. The rest of it, is an art form. But once you learn how to do it, you've kind of learned it. But this is the part that you're always digging deeper, with shoemaking it's always a lifetime of learning. You're constantly making sure that is correct. And so the amount of tension that's on foot is decided by what type of foot you have. And everyone has a different kind of foot. It's kinda like when you shake people's hands, some people have flashy hands, some people have firm hands, and the foot is the same way. the foot can be gathered up and they won't feel any tightness.

So, You look at the numbers that you have from your measurements and then you look at the shape, and you try and decide, I've got to take this foot. And my goal is to fit it, but also make a beautiful fit, a beautiful shoe or boot. So when the customer looks at it, they'll just see a glorious shape.

This pair was made from scrap crocodile leather that's been left over.

For this first year it was not possible to have international visitors due to Covid restrictions but we had enough brands to make a statement to give as a taste of bigger and bolder event due to come in 2021

I just want to make a quick blog post to wish everyone well in Pandemic, soon we will all know someone that has personally suffered. It's April the 21st now but it still feels like in the beginning.
I will still endeavour to make shoes and boots, I guess that I am lucky as the factory is also still my own and we are a small team are allowed to continue making our shoes. Things have been streamlined, and so like many other small businesses we have learned a few lessons and I have tightened the ship and also improved our quality.

Well, I had an order from a new client that had issues with his feet at the ball joint. The medical term is Hallux Valgus, Also know bunions. The client was after a Bespoke Chukka boot in a cheery red. This is the final result.

I made 2 pair, the first is more of a deeper maroon colour. The 2nd is the more expensive looking of the 2. The leather was tanned in Northhampton England.

Our French Flag Shoes

We are participating in a French fair on Dec 12-15th 2019 and so to show off our skills we have made a French flag wholecut pair of shoes.

I showed them to the French Ambassador and suggested to wear them with a match flench flag suit. He was not impressed with the comment and walked on... oh well!

World Championship in Shoemaking 2019

I regretted not creating an entry for the shoemaking championships last year. I managed to read up about the competition in plenty of time but decided not to proceed, I then went through the feeling of disappointment of missing out. In 2018 there were 45 shoemakers that registered for the competition and 30 black oxfords entrants arrived with 5 more being late. During the event, the top 10 shoes were announced and the top three received a cash prize and then toured the world of high-end shoe shops and tailoring stores.

Our Competitor

So, This year the call was to make a brown wingtip oxford with a full leather sole. We started in January by creating a new last for the event then in Febuary we started the actual shoemaking by used Barker'srs outsole and creating a heel block and welt from barkers leathers. For the upper we used a semi-aniline leather from AACRACKIN from England and we then source our own British racing green linings locally. We made our own Shoe last and Shoe tree in-house, when the shoe was completed we asked Vulture shoeshine to give the toecap and sides a military grade polish.

The event was held on the 22nd of March, The judging was completed the day before by a jury of 10 All respected professionals in the Shoe industry. Bloggers, shoemakers, writers and business owners and last years winner

This year the Winning shoe was a concept shoe from Danel Wegan, Danel came in 2ndplacee last year so he has achieved his dream. As for us.. Well,l we came in 34th position. Our target was to be in the top 20. Hopefully, we will achieve that next time around.
