Anyways after order a new dress shoe pair he kindly sent me a few photos of a pair of the engineering boots that he has owned and used regulary and they are still holding up.

On June 27th, I had the pleasure of attending an exciting shoe event at The Cauldren in Yen Akat Bangkok, marking the grand opening of the new menswear store. Located on the 3rd floor above Wizzard Mo Pizza which is run by Mr Bound, this store is set to become a premier destination for footwear lovers and circular fashion-conscious men.
The highlight of the evening was witnessing the debut of three pairs of bespoke shoes, each handcrafted with meticulous detail. The event was further special because three of my esteemed customers arrived, proudly wearing their own pairs of bespoke shoes that I created for them. The image shared on our Instagram here beautifully captures these three distinguished gentlemen showcasing their stylish footwear.
Throughout the event, guests appreciated the uniqueness of each pair of bespoke shoes—highlighting the artistry behind three shoes that blend craftsmanship with personal style. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and admiration for custom footwear, reaffirming the importance of tailored design in men's fashion.

World Shoemaking Championship 2025

Our 5th submission to the world championship in Shoemaking 2025 is the Toasted Marshmallow Double Monk Strap. And the good news is that the Article is now on Shoegazing

While working on what was meant to be the final version of this shoe, my workshop was devastated by a fire that destroyed the shoe itself — you can see the attached photo. This setback left me with just two weeks to craft a new version. Out of that challenge, and the determination it sparked in me and my team, the design evolved: what was once called the Marshmallow Double Monk became the Toasted Marshmallow Double Monk.

This double monk strap shoe is crafted from a deep, rich brown aniline leather that exudes sophistication. Its distinctive angular toe shape gives the upper a refined yet eye-catching character. Elevating the design further is the hand-embroidered beadwork along the piping and buttons, created by master Thai embroiderer Jib Blouin. Each bead is meticulously stitched in a randomized pattern using two shades of brown, accented with gold for subtle brilliance. The Cufflink/buttons themselves are embroidered in the same style, featuring a contrasting green and purple motif. All of this is unified by the upper’s exquisite high polish.

The playfulness of the Toasted Marshmallow Double Monk continues in the sole: composed of five layers of hollowed-out vegetable- barked tanned leather, it creates a striking stacked effect that symbolizes the layered journey of the design through the competition. When flipped over, the sole reveals its inner depth and the level of detail poured into the shoe from top to bottom.

The Toasted Marshmallow Double Monk stands as a testament to persistence, craftsmanship, and the will to overcome adversity — a creation that my team and I are deeply proud to present for this competition.

My Journey to the World Championships of Shoemaking 2023

Hello, everyone. I’m Allan Donnelly, the founder and owner of Don's Footwear and The Last Shoemaker, We are a bespoke shoemaking company based in Thailand and York UK. In this blog post, I want to share with you my experience of participating in the World Championships of Shoemaking 2023, where I submitted a boot that came 21st out of 30 entries.

The World Championships of Shoemaking is an international contest organized by Shoegazing and The Shoe Snob, in collaboration with Kirby Allison the Youtuber and Master Shoemakers, the Bookywook, with support from Parker Schenecker (I met his brother back in 2022). It’s a prestigious event that showcases the best craftsmanship and creativity in the shoemaking industry. The final takes place during the London Super Trunk Show on May 13th, 2023, where the top three shoes go on a world tour and the winner receives £6,000.

This year, for the first time, the contestants had to make a boot instead of a shoe. The theme was a balmoral boot in black, which is a classic and elegant style that can be worn with formal or casual outfits. The boot had to be made by hand using traditional methods and materials, and it had to demonstrate high quality, originality, and innovation.

I decided to enter the competition again for the 3rd time because I love a challenge and I wanted to test my teams skills and learn from other shoemakers. I also wanted to represent Dons and The Last Shoemaker and show our passion and dedication to our craft. It was a long and stressful process, but also very rewarding and fun.

I started by making the boot last, which was plastic form this time( that gives shape to the boot). I wanted to create a distinctive silhouette that would stand out from the rest. I chose a large toe box that gave the boot a 70’s glam look, inspired by rock stars like David Bowie and Mick Jagger. I also made the heel slightly higher than usual, to add some flair and attitude.

Next, I designed the pattern, which is the paper template that determines how the leather pieces are cut and stitched together. I opted for a simple and sleek design that emphasized the balmoral line, which is the seam that runs along the ankle and separates the upper from the lower part of the boot. I also added some subtle details like broguing and medallion on the toe cap, to give some texture and contrast.

Then, I handed over the last and the pattern to my staff in our factory of seven, who made the rest of the boot. They cut the leather pieces from high-quality black calf leather, skived them to reduce thickness, punched holes for stitching and lacing, assembled them with waxed linen thread, lasted them over the last with nails and glue, welted them with leather strips, attached them to a triple welt sole with wooden pegs, trimmed and sanded them to shape, stained them with black dye, polished them with wax and brushes, and finished them with metal toe taps and heel plates.

It took over two months to make the boot, and we made three prototypes before we were satisfied with the final product. We had to overcome many challenges along the way, such as finding the right balance between fit and style, adjusting the tension and alignment of the seams, ensuring durability and comfort of the sole, and achieving a smooth and shiny finish.

We submitted our boot online by sending photos and videos of it from different angles, along with a description of our design choices and techniques. We also shipped our boot to London for physical inspection by the judges. The judges were [names of judges], who are all renowned experts in shoemaking. They evaluated our boot based on four criteria: construction (40%), design (30%), finish (20%), and overall impression (10%).

We received our results by email a few weeks later. We were thrilled to learn that we came 21st out of 30 entries. We scored [your scores] out of 100 points for each criterion. The judges gave us positive feedback on our originality, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. They also gave us constructive criticism on how we could improve our balance, proportion, symmetry, and consistency.

We were very proud of our achievement and grateful for the opportunity to participate in this prestigious competition. We learned a lot from this experience and we gained more confidence in our abilities. We also enjoyed seeing the amazing work of other shoemakers from around the world. We congratulate [name of winner] for winning the competition with his/her stunning boot.

We want to thank everyone who supported us along this journey: our staff, our customers, our suppliers, our friends, our family, and our fans. We couldn’t have done it without you. Hello.

I hope you have all been well in 2022. It's been a while since Ive made my last blog post, As you all know I started this blog is 2008 as a way to get by while waiting for my first order of shoes to be created. Back in those days, I expected another factory to make my shoes for me, little did I know I would quickly come to own my own shoemaking factory.

Around that time 2008, I started to follow a blog called the Shoe Snob blog and have always dreamed that one day I would get a mention by Justin Fitzpatrick the owner and winter. Over the years his authority and influence on the shoe industry have grown and grown, and now he is regarded as the best source of quality footwear content. That's why I am so proud and happy to be finally featured on his website and social media channels.

Its about time that I started work on a newer and better collection of causla shoes, I cant make the athletic shoes as that's a whole different constuction process. Ive had a few idea's these past few years and now is the time to act on it.

We made him a fully bespoke pair of shoes so that he could review and share the experience of creating a fiddle waist pair of handwelted shoes. I'm really happy with the outcome, His blog really is a deep dive into the bespoke process, and the way we undertake the order.

Maybe you might not know but we once had a Showroom at the Mahanakon building in the Sathorn area just under dean and deLuca This was ideal at the time to showcase of designs and workmanship, but this time, having a workshop and showroom in the same building is a tremendous help. we will be located very near On Nut Skytrain station which I think a lot of people have heard about.

Guiddo Maggio or Don's Footwear?

Every once in a while I get an email asking why I am the best at elevator shoes, or who is the best between Don's Footwear and the Guiddo Maggio brand from Italy.

I have recently concluded that I get asked this question simply because customers tend to glance at the price difference between us both and think because GM is more expensive it means they are a better shoe. I know we all do not have the time to understand the finer aspects of shoemaking or to discover the skills and technique involved in creating a top tier shoe and with little time in our lives, we tend to just go on prices. Generally, it goes like this..If the price is too high we fear its just middlemen getting a cut, too low it seems there might be an issue later on after the purchase ( to good to be true)

Well I would say a higher price plays a part in what type of business that you are buying from:

Own factory selling via retailer
Own factory and sell in own channels DON'S FOOTWEAR
From another’s factory and sell through retailers
From someone else’s factory and sell in their own channels Guiddo Maggio

I believe Don's have the ultimate set-up. Because we own both our Brand and our channel. and that also helps Don's to offer a better price. In our factory we only created for our own brand, we dont need to create other labels to support our own factory our full attention and priority is on our own Brand. I know of only one other that created their own shoes and I believe it’s a Spanish brand, Guido Maggio outsources to another factory, that I know because I’ve had another factory contact me to ask if they wish to make shoes for us.

When it comes to premium custom made Owing your own factory is a must and gives a chance to create a better custom shoe, and have a better understanding over a marketer. We have been able to do that from the beginning. So, who is better? Well, Im slightly biased, but I would say we are better than Guiddo Maggio simply because Don's came along first, We started in 2005 and launched in 2009. The owner of Guiddo Maggio first came to me for advice around 2010 via a few phone calls on Skype, then slowly over time copied my styles, then managed to get my old webmaster to sell him my contact list. that's how he managed to get himself going, My family and friends still get his promotional emails from to this day, He always tends to copy things that I do a few months or years later, Trunk Shows, Styles, Website design, Content. I always laugh to myself when my good friend and loyal webmaster mentions to me what they have been up, Italians tend to say they are unique when it comes to design and they are always in competition with the French over who is the best at class and style and I believe they are the best in the world at that sort of thing, And so to have this guy trailing me ( a Scotsman), following my moves, its kind of cool haha.

The GM brand often like to criticize us that we are made in SEA in their blog posts and so I guess this is my long-awaited reply,, His only unique selling point is they are made in Italy, however, Its a huge problem in Italy that many shoes uppers are made in awful conditions across the water in the Slavic countries and shipped over and assembled in Italy ( there is a youtube video on the problem here) . Then next there is a problem with the Leather tannery Labour condition in Tuscany. So all in all, I don't think a Made in Italy statement beats a real Shoemaker like myself.

Don’s Footwear make everything in house. Except for the leather tanning which I buy from a Japanese owned tannery that has a high level of quality control as they supply to the entire Japanese police force and all leather must be tested regularly. I also make bespoke shoes, which is regarded as the creme de la creme of shoemaking And our bespoke offerings are made always in the west end bespoke way,, A wooden last needs to be created, shaped and labelled for the client use only, bespoke patterns are made, test pairs are made before going onto making the final pair. These are the best pair of shoes I've ever had. I'm glad I took advice from the Karavel shoe expert. He told me I'd need exact measurements for my wide (while short) feet. These don't hurt at all and don't need that excessive break-in, I usually do for size 8 shoes. because the instep is too low and the shoe is way too narrow.

HOLY MOLY!!! DAM NICE BOOTS!!! I just got the D.O.N.S Issue 1. They are bad ass. I had asked for a combo leather/rubber sole on the site option and got them in all rubber sole, but no worries. I do like how well the rubber grips the floor for traction. The feeling of the platforn of the agoe is flawless. It does NOT feel at all like an elevator shoe. Dam Allan, no words, you are just kicking ass my friend. PROPS!!

I just recieved the boots, they fit perfectly and are so damn comfortable I don't think I really need to take them off haha.

I am very impressed with the quality of the leather. This and the style alone are worth every penny. In comparison to my old cowboy boots that I used with a cheap height increase insert for years, MST is a much more comfortable design. Walking feels natural, and that's all a good shoe/boot needs to do.

Shoe Last making

So it comes to shoe last making I usually choose the wider of the two feet and then I'll do that side first. It's always best to do the wider foot first. If you the reason is that that sets the tone for the narrower foot. Like for instance, when looking at feet sometimes you see that the right foot is slightly wider than the left foot. that's why its best to start with the right one first. However, what is important to remember is do you select the numbers or the shape; to be honest, the shape always wins.

Have you ever had a pair of shoes that were too short? Or a shoe that's conversely too long. The pivot point or a tread point that something that must look at on the shoe lasts, It needs to match it to the foot, and so I find using the Patogragrah print, that will show the tread point, I hold the paperwork under the last to make sure its a match, it will correspond to the drawing.

I once read a book by Ferragamo called The Shoemaker of Dreams, I must say He doesn't get enough of a mention in the bespoke world these days as the brand is more of a fashion house. , he created so many systems and techniques with shoe last making and shoes, He brought the industry forward. For me, this is a fascinating part of making footwear is the last making part. The rest of it, is an art form. But once you learn how to do it, you've kind of learned it. But this is the part that you're always digging deeper, with shoemaking it's always a lifetime of learning. You're constantly making sure that is correct. And so the amount of tension that's on foot is decided by what type of foot you have. And everyone has a different kind of foot. It's kinda like when you shake people's hands, some people have flashy hands, some people have firm hands, and the foot is the same way. the foot can be gathered up and they won't feel any tightness.

So, You look at the numbers that you have from your measurements and then you look at the shape, and you try and decide, I've got to take this foot. And my goal is to fit it, but also make a beautiful fit, a beautiful shoe or boot. So when the customer looks at it, they'll just see a glorious shape.

This pair was made from scrap crocodile leather that's been left over.

I just want to make a quick blog post to wish everyone well in Pandemic, soon we will all know someone that has personally suffered. It's April the 21st now but it still feels like in the beginning.
I will still endeavour to make shoes and boots, I guess that I am lucky as the factory is also still my own and we are a small team are allowed to continue making our shoes. Things have been streamlined, and so like many other small businesses we have learned a few lessons and I have tightened the ship and also improved our quality.

Well, I had an order from a new client that had issues with his feet at the ball joint. The medical term is Hallux Valgus, Also know bunions. The client was after a Bespoke Chukka boot in a cheery red. This is the final result.

I made 2 pair, the first is more of a deeper maroon colour. The 2nd is the more expensive looking of the 2. The leather was tanned in Northhampton England.

Our French Flag Shoes

We are participating in a French fair on Dec 12-15th 2019 and so to show off our skills we have made a French flag wholecut pair of shoes.

I showed them to the French Ambassador and suggested to wear them with a match flench flag suit. He was not impressed with the comment and walked on... oh well!

World Championship in Shoemaking 2019

I regretted not creating an entry for the shoemaking championships last year. I managed to read up about the competition in plenty of time but decided not to proceed, I then went through the feeling of disappointment of missing out. In 2018 there were 45 shoemakers that registered for the competition and 30 black oxfords entrants arrived with 5 more being late. During the event, the top 10 shoes were announced and the top three received a cash prize and then toured the world of high-end shoe shops and tailoring stores.

Our Competitor

So, This year the call was to make a brown wingtip oxford with a full leather sole. We started in January by creating a new last for the event then in Febuary we started the actual shoemaking by used Barker'srs outsole and creating a heel block and welt from barkers leathers. For the upper we used a semi-aniline leather from AACRACKIN from England and we then source our own British racing green linings locally. We made our own Shoe last and Shoe tree in-house, when the shoe was completed we asked Vulture shoeshine to give the toecap and sides a military grade polish.

The event was held on the 22nd of March, The judging was completed the day before by a jury of 10 All respected professionals in the Shoe industry. Bloggers, shoemakers, writers and business owners and last years winner

This year the Winning shoe was a concept shoe from Danel Wegan, Danel came in 2ndplacee last year so he has achieved his dream. As for us.. Well,l we came in 34th position. Our target was to be in the top 20. Hopefully, we will achieve that next time around.

Due to new Landlords at our building having there own ideas of what to do with their own space we have had to move out. We decided to leave 2 months early to give us time to focus on what to do next. For the time being we were going to just take on bespoke order from our factory. The fact is it's only myself working on the wooden shoe lasts and being the owner I also have many other tasks to take on. I have now realized that I can only make 2 per week.

I am Allan Donnelly, I am the owner of Don's Footwear, I operate and run a shoe factory of 10 Shoe Makers, My main job in the factory is to design and cut patterns for new styles and work planning, these past 2 years I have also been shoe lasts. My Team is my wife and her assistant then we have 3 Upper makers ( Clickers), 5 lasting men and one talented finishing man that applied the creams and burnishes the shoes. Have received the shoes - they're great.

Apart from the excellent craftsmanship and quality, the midsole tech is brilliant.

They are so much more comfortable than my other elevator shoes - and feel more stable - I thought for a moment that you'd forgotten they were elevator shoes and had to double check and measure myself.

Have taken a walk down the street and am very impressed by the comfort and stability - I don't feel as if I'm leaning forward as I did in the other shoes.

I've just ordered another pair in the Botticelli.

I've ordered a 10 rather than a 10.5 as the pair I've just received are slightly big for me, but will wear them with inserts, that should make them more snug.
