In this lesson we take a deeper dive into the Eleven Rack Rig XML file and look at how we can create our own custom rig sets. A 'Custom Rig Set' is a collection of rigs that we can load onto the Eleven Rack in one-click using 'Load All Rigs From Computer'.

This is a great way to quickly load sets of Eleven Rack Rigs that you have put together for different songs, gigs, recording sessions, or anything along those lines.

In this video we will look at how to save the rigs/presets on our Eleven Rack to our computer for later use, sharing, and to serve as a backup.

You can save one rig at a time, or save all rigs at one time. When you "Save All Rigs To Computer", you will also generate an .xml file that will allow you to "Load All Rigs From Computer" in one click.

Always, always, always save all your rigs to the computer! Accidents happen, and you do not want to lose all the work you put into creating the perfect rig!

ELEVEN RACK - BYPASS THE CAB/MIC - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

There are several ways, and reasons, to bypass the cab block on the Eleven Rack. Maybe you want to use the Eleven Rack with a real amp and cab, or maybe you want to use Impulse Responses in your DAW for the cab.

With the Eleven Rack, you have a few options depending on the outputs you want to use. You can bypass the cab manually, you can set the cab to always be OFF, or you could use an Output to Amp port and set the source to AMP OUTPUT (which is split off before the cab).

Here's a video that will go through all the options and consequences of bypassing the cab.

Keep in mind, whenever you BYPASS the cab, it is bypassed for ALL outputs, even the Mains/USB.
If you want the full rig through the Mains/USB, but only the amp sound (before cab) to run into an Amp/Cab at the same time, then you would not want to bypass the cab, but instead choose AMP OUTPUT for one/both of the Output To Amp ports.

Two of the items I'm excited to finally see are the whammy and harminator. I have not used this unit as of yet, so I don't know how it sounds, but the features are striking (love the touch screen), and the Eleven team is one of the most trusted when it comes to modeling amps, cabinets, effects, and all things guitar.

ELEVEN RACK - AUTOMATION EXPLAINED PART 1 (Automate Effects, Amps, Ect...)

In this video I'll show you everything you need to know about using automation with the Eleven Rack. I'll cover how to automating effects, amps, and everything else by using MIDI tracks in Pro Tools. We'll look at how to find the CC# for any parameter in the Eleven Rack PDF, and on the Eleven Rack itself. You'll see how to setup your MIDI tracks, add CC#s, and how to draw your automation with the Pencil Tool. You will also see how you can record your automation into Pro Tools using a MIDI Foot Controller. I'll also cover a few other things about automation and the Eleven Rack in general. So strap in, grab a drink, grab a guitar, and let's dig in deep!

I'll be using Pro Tools, but the concept is the same for any DAW. With automation, you can have your DAW control things like the Wah position, Distortion On/Off, Delay mix, ect… You can even automate Amp parameter changes, Rig input, and so much more! I can't cover everything, but the concept will be the same. Simply find the parameter you want to automate, find and add the CC#, and draw in the automation.

We can also do Program Changes with the Eleven Rack, which is a fancy way of saying we can have Pro Tools change Rigs/Presets for us. I won't be covering Program Changes in this video because I already have a video that covers Automated Rig changes with the Eleven Rack. See it here:

With Automation and Program changes you can literally structure out an entire song, or a whole gigs worth of songs and have Pro Tools do all the changes for you. No need for a foot controller or MIDI cables, just your Eleven Rack, the USB cable, a computer, and Pro Tools.

The main takeaways are to know how to find the CC#s, know how to route your MIDI track, and know how to draw in automation using the different Pencil Tools. Keep in mind you can also record in automation with a Foot Controller. In the video I choose the CC#s first because I wanted to show the automation being recorded. But, you don't have to choose the CC# to record the input of your pedal. All the data coming in will be recorded, but you will need to add the CC# in order to see the data that was recorded.

Also, remember that you can use multiple MIDI tracks and label them for each item you are automating. Remember you can add multiple lanes to a single MIDI track. And remember you can easily MUTE the automation on a MIDI track by using the MUTE button.

In the video we are just monitoring the effected sound most of the time. You can of course record the performance live, or after the fact by using Re-Amp. Just make sure you always record your DRY guitar so you have something to send back through the Eleven Rack. When you record the output of the Eleven Rack Rig, all the automation will effect the track. Then, you can deactivate the MIDI tracks and save processing power.

Eleven Rack Editor Won't Open

After about 3 years, I finally experienced a problem with the Eleven Rack Editor! I opened it, it populated in the task-bar, but would NOT OPEN!

In this video I will show you the method that worked for me to get up and running quick.

Another method that might work for some would be to RIGHT-CLICK "Eleven Rack Editor" in the task-bar and choose MOVE. That did not work for me.

The method that should work for everyone is to DELETE the Eleven Rack Editor Preferences files.

Navigate to C:\Users and open your account's user folder.
Open the AppData folder.

NOTE: If the AppData folder is not showing, click on VIEW and check 'Hidden Items.' (Windows 10)

Open the Roaming folder.

Open the Eleven Rack Editor folder and delete its contents. Or delete the Eleven Rack Editor folder.

First, I have NO knowledge if we will ever see another Eleven Rack, or any new features added to the current Eleven Rack (though I do doubt it for the current version).

If you could have ANY features, what would they be? I have listed several options, but if I missed something, leave a comment of what feature you want/need.

How much would you pay for a new Eleven Rack assuming it had all the features you want?

What should the name be? What should the form factor be? What features does is need? What should be included with it? Should it be orange, or maybe brushed aluminum, or black brushed aluminum? UPDATE! D/L ALL BenoniStudio Eleven Rack Rigs (back in a .zip)

A few months ago I switched over to using a self-extracting archive for all my custom Eleven Rack Rigs because there were problems with the file paths and names being too long for a .zip file to compress and uncompress. But, there were reports of a few problems with that method on OSX. So, I have re-named a few things and shortened the paths, and now everything is available as a .zip file again.

I have included the Original Eleven Rack Factory Rigs in the "ALL BENONI STUDIO RIGS" download, but I have never offered just these rigs on their own download on this site. I have always had them up on the DUC, but some people have had problems finding them, so here they are.

These are the 104 Original Eleven Rack Factory Rigs that came with Firmware 1.0.3 (these are PRE-ERXP Rigs). There is also a .XML included so you can load them in one-shot. These were provided to me by Avid several years ago, and they are fine with me hosting them. These are the only rigs I offer that I did not personally create.

If you are getting the "Eleven Rack #2" error with Pro Tools 11 or Pro Tools 12+ on Windows, this video will show you why it happens and how to fix it.

If you have the "Eleven Rack #2" error, you will probably also have problems with Embedded Rig settings. So I suggest you go through all the steps and re-install the driver with the correct steps, don't just rely on unchecking the device in the MIDI menu.

A basic run down of this process is:

Close Pro Tools
Turn OFF Eleven Rack
Uninstall the driver (Programs and Features)
Uninstall the Eleven Rack entries in Device Manager
Restart PC
Install the Eleven Rack driver
Restart the PC
Plugin and turn ON the Eleven Rack
Restart the PC
Now you should be good to go.

Always use the SAME USB PORT for the Eleven Rack - EVERY TIME!

Eleven Rack w/ Surface Pro 3 - A Quick Test

The Eleven Rack Editor is surprisingly easy to use with touch. You won't even need to use your Surface Pen. This would be a great setup for a gig or practice just to have access to the Eleven Rack Editor and the ability to Load and Save Rigs.

Pro Tools is another story for touch. Pro Tools is not built for touch, that is obvious, but it is usable. Adding in a Type Cover and Surface Pro Pen will be a must. The Eleven Rack works just fine with Pro Tools on our Surface Pro 3. Recording and playback works. Of course the issue would be the Surface has one USB port. We need a minimum of two USB ports for the iLok and Eleven Rack - so you will need a USB hub or the Surface Pro Dock to use Pro Tools and the Eleven Rack at the same time.

If I were going to do serious recording I would add in an external USB hard drive (or two), and attach a USB wireless full size Keyboard and Mouse. And if a full size monitor were available, I would utilize the Mini DisplayPort out on the Surface Pro 3 as well.

It's pretty cool that you can use the Eleven Rack and Pro Tools on a tablet. Once these things get more powerful, like quad core, dual SSDs, better video chips, 16+GB ram, they will be the way to go for every application. Just think about being able to have your desktop computer and all the programs you have installed on it - available to you at all times, in any location, and it's only the size of a tablet! That's the solution I am waiting for.

But, as it stands now.... The Surface Pro 3 (and 4) are pretty good at running Pro Tools. We are constrained by things like, one hard drive, one USB port, which means for serious editing you will need to add several accessories (USB HDD, Type Cover, USB Hub/Dock, Pen) which makes it less of a mobile solution vs. a nice laptop.

BUT! It's really cool to literally have Pro Tools and the Eleven Rack controls in the palm of your hand.

Load Embedded Rig Settings from the CLIPS LIST in Pro Tools

As most know, you can right click a track to load your embedded rig setting. However, you also have the option to load the Eleven Rack embedded rig settings from the CLIPS LIST in Pro Tools.

There were other ways to load embedded rigs in PTLE 8 and PT9-10, such as right from the Eleven Rack Editor. But since the Editor is now Standalone (since Pro Tools 11) we no longer have that option.

Eleven Rack Automated Rig Change w/MIDI in Pro Tools

Imagine you have a song that has a ton of rig/patch changes, like from clean and airy, to djent distorted, to something in-between, and maybe even something just used for effect (think Korn, Deftones, ect...)

You could of course use a pedal board, and if you have been reading my blog for awhile you know that I like the Behringer FCB1010 with a EurekaProm installed.

Another option is to let Pro Tools send those program control messages for us, and it's pretty easy to setup. In the following video, I will show you exactly how to setup Pro Tools to send these program control messages to the Eleven Rack.

First, you need to have the Eleven Rack connect to your computer's USB port, this should be obvious.

Once in Pro Tools, setup your tracks. At a minimum you will need a MIDI track and a Mono or Stereo Audio track. Set the Audio track's input to ELEVEN RIG L/R. I also like to always have a Stereo Master and probably an Instrument track for a drum virtual instrument like BFD3, but these are not necessary. Feel free to create any further tracks you need.

Now we need to configure our MIDI Track so it can send Program Change messages to the Eleven Rack. Change the VIEW TYPE to Program Change. Now, set the output of the MIDI Track to Eleven Rack > Channel 1 - IT HAS TO BE CHANNEL 1.

And that is pretty much it! Now, choose the PENCIL Tool and click anywhere in the MIDI Track to add a Program Change. If you place it in the wrong place, no problem, grab the HAND Tool or SMART Tool and drag the Program Change anywhere you want, or press DELETE to get rid of it.

Once you add a Program Change a window will pop up with a bunch of MIDI CC numbers. Choose one of these, click Done, and you have added your Program Change.

You can then continue through your track and add any further program changes that you need. Keep in mind that 0 = A1, 1=A2, 2=A3, and so on (USER BANKS)... and 104=a1, 105=a2, and so on (Factory Banks). You can click through the numbers to audition each rig before you click Done to ensure you are choosing the preset you want. Watch the video for further information and to see this in action.

You will probably want to structure all the Rigs/Presets you are going to use in a logical order on the Eleven Rack. That way you do not have to audition several numbers/rigs to find what you are looking for. For example, if my track has 4 presets that I will use, then I would save them on the Eleven Rack in A1, A2, A3, and A4. Now when I add a Program Change I know I will want 0, 1, 2, or 3.

Okay, you are all setup now and ready to jam out. Hit Play in Pro Tools and it will send all the Rig change messages for you, exactly on time, every time. Watch the video for a full run through and for more information.

All of these presets have been matched to the presets of Eleven MKII Software/Plugin/AAX

Because MKII does not have any effects, I bypassed all effects on the Eleven Rack except the Volume Pedal, and that was for convenience.

Also, I kept the output after the Amp as Stereo so it would be more convenient when adding in effects, but you can easily switch to MONO output on the Eleven Rack.

Because the Eleven Rack is limited to 16 characters for names, I had to made changes where necessary.

The rigs are contained in folders that mimic the layout of Eleven MKII.

Each folder contains single rigs and an XML file so you can load all of the rigs from that category when using "Load All Rigs From Computer"

These have been matched VISUALLY. Some may be a click or two off, but the resulting tone should not be effected.

When listening to the same rig from MKII and the Eleven Rack, while extremely similar, I noticed that MKII sounds more open, while the Eleven Rack sounds warmer.
This could be because of the True-Z input of the Eleven Rack (MKII has input gain), or because of the AAX protocol vs. the internal processing of the Eleven Rack, or some other reason. But, that is what I noticed with my guitars (EMG pickups), and sound system.

Also, the Volume on the Eleven Rack has been set to '0', and the True-Z is set to Auto for every rig.

Going Deep with Eleven MKII Presets and Eleven Rack Effect Presets

A few weeks ago (Nov. 2015) Avid released an update to Eleven Software called Eleven MKII.
It was updated to include everything Eleven Rack users received in the ERXP (firmware 2.0.x) update.

In this video I dive deep into the compatibilities and incompatibilities of the Eleven MKII Presets and the Eleven Rack Effect Presets.

First, Eleven Rack Effect Presets are NOT Eleven Rack Rigs. Rigs denote a FULL rig setting, meaning amp, cab, mic, effects, true-z, volume, ect....

As you see in the video, some of the MKII presets will load in the Eleven Rack, although they will reference the wrong amp/cab, which is easily switched. Others, well, they don't work at all. I'm not sure you will learn much in this video, but at the least it will give you a good grasp of how and where the Eleven Rack Effect Presets are stored.

It is my position that Eleven MKII would be better if Avid would have included an integrated environment that allowed you to easily setup complete guitar tones in one environment. As it stands now, you have to use several inserts to setup a guitar tone with effects before/after the amp.

Since we already have the Eleven Rack Editor, remove all the stuff that is dependent on the hardware, and package all the Eleven Effects and Eleven MKII within this single guitar production studio environment. Also, since we already have separate plugins for the Eleven Effects and Eleven MKII, leave that as is. That way people have options to use either an integrated guitar studio setup, or single plugins. It would also be nice if MKII was made available as standalone.

Eleven Rack Editor

When you look at all other guitar amp sim packages, almost all of them are integrated environments. This is not by accident. Waves GTR3, IK Multimedia Amplitube 4, Guitar Rig 5, and many others all have integrated environments to make it easy to produce a guitar tone and save the preset for recall at a later date or for easy sharing.

Eleven Rack Mini Control Window - Explained (Pro Tools)

In this video we focus on the Mini Eleven Rack Control Window that resides within the EDIT WINDOW in Pro Tools.

The Mini Window allows us to complete several tasks with our Eleven Rack without needing to open up the full Standalone Eleven Rack Editor. We can adjust volume, quickly mute our mains, choose a rig, Load a Rig or Load All Rigs, and even bring up a flat list of all the presets in the Eleven Rack and quickly switch between them, OR have the presets cycle themselves.

When you set the "Increment rig every" setting, this can allow you to change rigs hands free so you can focus on playing your guitar and listen for the perfect rig. The "Increment rig every" setting is also very powerful for re-amping.

Get to know the Eleven Rack Micro Control Panel, it's another deceptively simple, yet, powerful tool to help you take control of your Eleven Rack.
