Push was my second movie at this year’s Fantasy Filmfest. And it was for free! Many thanks to the organizers! But I thick they should change something for the next year regarding the free movie. They should take at least 2€ for the “free” movie, since many seats remain empty. I guess a lot of jerks grabbed the gratis tickets and didn’t show up…

Well, let’s go on with the movie itself. The most of you know the classical super hero movie: some people have special abilities and other have not. Some use their abilities to do bad things and the others try to stop them. And Push doesn’t differ from these established ideas. Today’s super hero movies can only stand out with showing an innovative look, idea, plot, etc. The latest movie I saw which does that was Watchman, which – of course – had was based on a standout comic.

But Push can convince by a very good setting and a good story. The special abilities in this movie are categorized: there are Movers, Pushers, Sniffers, Watchers and much more. Movers use telekinetic powers, Pushers can control the thoughts of others, Sniffers can smell very good and Watchers can predict the future.

The main character Nick is a mover. When he was a child, his dad was killed by the guys who control the experiment, which brought him his powers. Years later (his way of revenge has brought him to Hong Kong) he meets the 13 year old Cassie acted by Dakota Fanning. As special powered team (Cassie is a Watcher) they start a battle for revenge and justice against local bad guys and the big enemy in the Chinese metropolis. On their way they meet Kira (Nick’s ex) who turns heads… And she does it also literally – she is a Pusher.

Push found its ideal setting in Hong Kong. I guess that this is the city which fits perfectly for this movie. The special effects are pretty good. And so are the fights and imagery. There are a lot of funny scenes especially when Cassie tries to look (or be) grown up. But what I missed were the scenes in which the special powers are combined. There where some good attempts but the full potential was not used.

But overall it is a good flick and a big recommendation if you like this genre.
Eating brains? I never thought that it is that simple. And Wasting Away provides a completely innovative view at the world outlook of zombies…

The movie starts with black white scenes showing a classical scenario: a strange experiment is performed at a soldier. Some green stuff turns the guy into a pretty strong but bad looking zombie. And since the attacks of these creatures are not that cool, the green stuff needs to disappear… And of course, on the way one of the barrels gets lost…
In the next scenes we get to know the protagonists of Wasting Away: two young couples hanging out a diner and making ale cream… But some of the ingredients are contaminated with the green stuff. And the stuff is really green – even in the black white scenes!
After eating the apparently tasty ale cream, something strange happens to the guys and to the look of the movie: we now see colored images. But the couples look pretty normal. I assumed that they became zombies. Is this the big surprise of this movie?
They leave the diner and recognize some changes: other people move and talk way faster, the gang itself got stronger and kind of invulnerable. Unfortunately the other people run away from them... What’s wrong with the world? A stranger seems to know the answer: the green stuff (to which he also was exposed) turned them into super warriors! And the other people are infected with a virus and need to be killed…

But unfortunately he is wrong… After the vision switched back to black and white, we see what is real: The gang members are classical Romero style zombies – but they still believe they are super warriors.

And this fallacy (which remains almost until the end) provides a lot of very entertaining and amusing situations. Did you ever wonder how it looks and sounds when zombies make out? I almost died in the chair… In some more scenes (while watching through the eyes of the zombies) I desperately wished to see the same scene in black and white. Even thinking about how it will look like makes me laugh…

The gore effects of this very funny movie are definitely low price. But this fits perfectly for Wasting Away. The flick doesn’t take itself serious. It wants to be a comedy – and it is horror comedy at its best! If you like Romero style zombies and flicks like Fido you should definitely have a look! Big recommendation!
Yes its time for Fantasy Filmfest 2009! Like last year I'm going to spend some time (not whole days) in the Cinecitta Nuremberg. I already made my list of movies I'm going to watch:

Wasting Away (finally a zombie movie!)

     Push (for free)

     District 9

     Black Dynamite

So that is my first choice. But there is a lot of stuff I want to keep an eye on. There is Doghouse which is in the line-up next to Shaun of the Dead, which I like very much...

Other previews sound good, but won't bring me into the theater. Lake Mungo is a documentation like flick - does somebody said Blair Witch Project? Sounds great - but actually I got sick seeing a movie filmed with these shaky cameras...

What I miss this year are the movies, which already get called "shocking" in the preview. I remember last year's Martyrs. After reading the preview we hesitated to buy the tickets. It seems that the current agenda is filled with more comedy (OSS117 - Lost in Rio, Black Dynamite) and more high class productions. You can also see more stars this year: Renée Zellweger (Case 39), Jackie Chan (Shinjuku Incident), Tommy Lee Jones and John Goodman (In the Electric Mist). Even first class producer Peter Jackson takes part with District 9. Actually I can't find any cheap productions anymore...

Anyway, the current Fantasy Filmfest seems to be somehow themed: Children! There are a lot of movies about kids - of any age and creepiness. Examples are The Children, Hansel and Gretel and Grace. But I actually think movies about scary children are not that cutting-edge...

To get the point: I'm really looking forward for Friday with my first movie Wasting Away. See all the reviews at www.entertain-me.tv!
Subscribe to this blog

The final: Downloading Nancy

I choosed the movie Downloading Nancy to be my finish for this year’s Fantasy Filmfest. The preview used terms like "forbidding" and "morbid". Johan Rencks debut has caused intense reaction at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. I was looking forward to see what induced the critics to such response. It seemed to be a good bridge over to the next Fantasy Filmfest.

The movie is about a woman stuck in a loveless marriage. While her husband Albert is mainly interested in golf, she is just looking for some affection. At her way down in a spiral of self-contempt and self-harm she meets Louis. With him Nancy can act out her sadomasochistic tendencies. But "tendencies" doesn't describe what Nancy is finally looking for... After Nancy disappeared, Albert meets Louis and the husband (and the audience) gets to know the whole extend of Nancy’s obsession.

I can't say that I "like" this movie. Sometimes it was hard to keep watching – not only due to painful things, which Nancy received. It’s more shocking to see how apathetically the husband treats his wife in this cold "marriage".
It’s a very good movie you should have a look, if you like credible but somehow strange scenarios.

Release Date: 21st January 2008
Director: Johan Renck
Writers: Pamela Cuming, Lee Ross
Cast: Maria Bello, Jason Patric, Rufus Sewell
Subscribe to this blog

My Name Is Bruce! Evil Dead? Bubba Ho-tep? I could list hundred more movies... If you now think of Bruce Campbell you are right! At this point I didn't want to judge his acting abilities in general. I can only say, that every movie I saw up to know was funny and pretty entertaining! And this also applies to My Name Is Bruce. Fortunately the producers of the Fantasy Filmfest got a real copy of this flick! The guy, who stepped in front of the audience to introduce the movie, earned a lot of clap for their efforts.

In this movie Bruce Campbell is playing... BRUCE CAMPBELL - a scruffy actor, who is working for at most mediocre action b-movie productions. The producers don't care for him - his dog doesn't either. But when it comes to fighting a trashy looking Asian demon Bruce is the man. At least his nerdy hardcore fans think that way...
My Name Is Bruce is a very funny movie, which parodies some of Bruce Campbell's previous flicks in a self - deprecating way. If you like that kind of movies it's a must! If you like Bruce Campbell its a duty!

Subscribe to this blog

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.entertain-me.tv/2008/09/bruce-who.html" title="My Name Is Bruce! What should I say? Usually I read all previews of the movies which are going to be shown at the filmfest. And so did I. And Martyrs was the first movie which catches my eye...

“The most talked-about, shocked-about and divisive movie at the Cannes Film Festival this year (...) Those who loved it absolutely loved it; those who hated it felt it marked a nadir in extreme degradation (…) the end of cinematic civilization.” Fangoria

That was the comment which was placed right under the preview. We had to see this movie! So we bought the tickets after leaving Outlander and about 6 hours later we sat in Martyrs!
At the Fantasy Filmfest a guy from the organization staff steps in front of the audience and introduces the upcoming movie. I can't remember everthing he said, but his final words were something like: I would like to say enjoy the entertainment - but I can't... Right here I became scared...

And the movie keeps all promises! It is scary, gory and irritating. The story is very uncommon and this raises Martyrs above all other splatter strips. I think its a inteligent movie with a good ending! Its definitely worth to be seen!
Martyrs is about the story of two young women which suffer a lot of torments. Most of them have a particular purpose... There were some situations when I wished the movie would end. But it didn't. When you look at the movie poster you might think of a two-girl-splatter-horror-crap. Its definitely not!
See it by yourself and let us know your opinion! Enjoy... I guess you won't...
But maybe less might remember the first game of this franchise - Tiberian Dawn was released 1995.
To celebrate this 13th anniversary of one of the biggest series in computer games history, EA is giving away the first game of the Red Alert Series from 1996 - for free! You can download the Command & Conquer Red Alert at the EA games website.

I have to admit that I didn't played that game that much. I rather played the older Tiberian Dawn. Actually I was into the level designer. I liked it to create huge maps, which were not working in the most cases.
But maybe I come back to Red Alert. My bias for older games should be obvious...

So if you want a flashback in the C&C universe go ahead - it will be for free! You are a guy who is desperately waiting for Red Alert 3? Maybe EA likes to tease you. Guns, cars and girls? No? What about spaceships and aliens? Better? Lets include some vikings with their swords and you got Outlander.
I recently saw it as part of the Fantasy Filmfest in Nuremberg. How was it? So so... The story strongly remind me of The 13th Warrior. But this time the bad guy was a pretty cool looking alien. That beast ripped some vikings not that gingerly.
What else? 3rd person view of the "beast" while it is walking at the ceilling? Sounds familiar? An orphaned little child becomes the friend of the "stranger"... There were a lot of things which remind me of other films. But the pictures, the landscape and - of curse - the beast looked pretty good and unique.

So an A for the look and action - the story is ok... at most. That combination sounds good for you? Go ahead! You won't be dissapointed!
Subscribe to this blog

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.entertain-me.tv/2008/08/vikings-swords-and-aliens.html" title="Vikings, swords and aliens... You might ask why I have choosen white. Well, pink is too feminine and silver looks to crappy. Black is also quite cool but is vulnerable to fingerprints...
Now the color question is answered, I can tell what this thing is capable of. You can play games! Ok that's not much, but the way how you can play is great. It has two displays: one common and one touchscreen. So you can use the stylus to interact with the games. The DS also provides Wifi access to the games.
And there are a lot of games which uses these feature quite well. Currently I own 3 games. The best of them is Bomberman DS. You remember Bomberman? Some little guys move on a grid and try to blast walls and enemies with their bombs?! I'll provide a review for this great game...

Bit by bit the good old Gameboy feeling is coming back...

Subscribe to this blog

The first time: PS3 beats competitors in Japan

After the launch of the cheaper PS3 version lead to more sold units in the USA, Sony was able to sell about 56000 devices in Japan last week. Maybe the new available color (ceramic white) has also something to do with it... With that numbers Sony tripled their sales and beat Nintendos Wii (34500) and Microsofts Xbox 360 (5800).
Well, I'm talking about the “next-gen” consoles... These numbers are pretty neat but lets compare them to the handheld sales: Nintendo DS – 78900 and Sony PSP – 59000! Nuff said...
Subscribe to this blog

Growing Nintendo

Well, everybody knows that Nintendo consoles are in great demand. No wonder that more games for Nintendo are sold. But look at these numbers: in the 3rd quarter of the current year the business volume for Nintendo games was $1,2 billion! This means a raise of about 32% compared to the 2nd quarter. This was a historical moment, because Nintendo passed Sony with these numbers.
Sony’s revenue remained constant at about $1 billion. Did I missed someone? Oh Microsoft increased their volume to $318 million.
But why Nintendo got the edge? Some market-researchers attribute this to the fact, that the Nintendo’s products have more mass appeal than the consoles of their competitors... What do you think about that?
Subscribe to this blog

Handheld madness

Some time ago a friend of mine had to stay in a hospital for about one week. He is not the typical “book-reading” guy. So how could such guy be kept entertained? Watching TV the whole day? This gets boring over the time. So another friend brought him a GameBoy Advanced and a Nintendo DS and I started to wonder how many handheld video game system Nintendo have ever developed. All which I know was the GameBoy. Ok its a couple of years old. But it was pretty cool back in the days... Lets check out what Nintendo did over the years:

Game Boy Classic (1989)

Game Boy Pocket

Game Boy Light

Game Boy Color

Game Boy Advance

Game Boy Advance SP

Game Boy Micro

Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS Lite (2006)

Ok, that’s not bad... Lets come back to my friend in the hospital. He is well now and I want to have such a Nintendo DS Lite. Actually they created a new version and sell it for 399€. It differs from the “big” version only in the size of hard disk (40GB instead of 60GB), number of USB ports (2 instead of 4), a missing card reader and the missing downwards compatibility to Playstation 2 games. And the last point seems to be the biggest issue. Even though the “big” version is sold for 499€ now (in a bundle with 2 games and a second controller), I'm not quite sure if the 100€ are worth the additional features. I can live with 2 USB connectors and without a card reader. But when it comes to the downward compatibility I start to struggle... Will I really play PS2 games? I never did this with PSone games on the PS2. On the other hand there are a lot of good games for the PS2 – and not that much for PS3 right now...
I have no idea what to do. Buy a “big” version (while supplies last) or wait – maybe for another price reduction? Its a hard decision...
Subscribe to this blog

Abandon Monday #3: Wizardry 7

Today I want to present the first role playing game of the Abandon Monday to you. And I have to admit its my favorite genre.
Wizardry 7 - Crusaders of the Dark Savant is a classical RPG. You can take up to 6 characters to go for the main goal: find the Astral Dominae.
At first let me say that the game is pretty complex. You can create your starting characters out of several races and professions. 4 spell classes spread over 6 element types lead to a nice pool of magical stuff. The often challenging battles are turn based and give you a lot of tactical options. Together with an intelligent leveling system and about 500 different items and weapons, Wizardry 7 provides hours of fine RPG entertainment. The graphic and sound quality is pretty good for 16 year old game, even tough its not comparable to recent RPGs.
Thats it for the technical facts. Let me tell you just in a few sentences what I think about this game. Last night at 10:00pm I started to create a new party. That was done at about 11:00pm. Then I thought “I couldn't go to bed until I gave this party a try”. I did... About 5 hours later I finished trying – right after I cleared the first dungeons.
The game is definitely addictive. The very good story, the huge world and the compelling mood will cost me a lot of sleepless nights... again. For me Wizardry 7 is the best classical RPG. If you like this genre give it a try!

Producer: Sir-tech Software, Inc.
Publisher: US Gold
Year: 1992
Genre: RPG

Subscribe to this blog

Abandon Monday #2: Burntime

The current vote approved the result of last Abandon Monday vote: Burntime should be reviewed.
Imagine a world in a day after scenario. Deserts, radioactive polluted cities and a lot of guys, which fight to survive. Burntime is a nice mixture of strategy and role play game. You control a group of guys against other survivors. You have to fight, care for water and food and to conquer place after place on the map. One way to win the game is to defeat all other competitors.
To achieve that, you have access to 3 different character classes. There are fighters, doctors and technicians. The job of fighters and docs is clear. The technicians have ever meant a pretty cool feature to me. They have the ability to build up some helpful devices for you, which can help your group to survive or to get an edge over your enemies. Depending on there abilities they can construct different traps and pumps.
In the game you can trade these devices, food, water, machine parts and – of course – weapons. These are definitely needed to conquer and defend cities.
Burntime is a really cool game with its uncommon story and - even for these days – a innovative concept.
You like Mad Max? Give Burntime a try!

Producer: Max Design
Year: 1993
Genre: Strategy

Subscribe to this blog

Abandon Monday #1: Battle Isle 2

With Battle Isle 2 and Burntime at first place at our Abandon Monday voting, I had to choose which game will be presented. It was a hard decision but then I chose the game with which I spend the most time: Battle Isle 2.
But why is this game that special? Well, its simply a strategy game, in which you can move your units at a hexagonal grid. Back in 1993 the graphic was pretty good. Later there was also an CD version which was packed with some prerendered 3D sequences of the units.
But believe me, in the case you like strategy games and start to play Battle Isle 2 you will spend a lot of time with fighting the Titan Net. To cut a long story short, there is a computer net which went insane and started to attack the humans. You are the big strategist and – of course – only you can help to defeat Titan Net. To do this you have access to the same units as your opponents have. There are about 50 of them. Together with the 24 maps (20 for the campaign and 4 multiplayer maps) this means a depth, which you will hardly find again. Even now, the technical aspects of the game are not contemporary but definitely convenient.
I also like realtime strategy games but the turn based Battle Isle 2 is the best strategy game I ever played. Believe me!

Producer: Blue Byte
Publisher: Accolade, Blue Byte
Year: 1993
Genre: Strategy

Subscribe to this blog

Games Convention Germany

©Leipziger Messe GmbH / Uwe Frauendorf

The annual European gaming convention took place from 23rd to 26th of August in Leipzig Germany. It drew for a close with 185.000 visitors – about 2.000 more than in the year before.
I wasn't able to go to Leipzig. So I tried to keep me informed about the news of the different companies and publishers. When it comes to consoles I was a bit disappointed. There were no really breaking news. Nothing really exciting from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo regarding the Next-Gen-Consoles: No price reduction for PlayStation3 in Europe. At selling numbers the Wii overtook the XBox360.
The “Best of GC” award showed an outlook at the next generation of gaming. Some of the winners are Crysis (PC), Bioshock (Xbox360) and Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PS3). A couple of nice games... I watched some trailers and I was really impressed.
Maybe I can be there next year to bag tons of merchandise stuff and to take some pictures of nice fair hostesses...

Subscribe to this blog

Abandon Monday

Do you remember the old games? No, I don't ask for games, which have been released 2 or 3 years ago. I talk about 10 and 15 year old games. This was the time I started to take some interest in computers. At that time I mainly focused on games. Even I had no own computer, I bought computer game magazines. Every month photo-realistic in-game graphic was newly defined. They also showed us the appropriate hardware to run these games. Graphic and audio boards with the size of pizza boxes (the big ones), 14inch monitors and 8 MBytes of RAM were considered to be the high-end. My turn came when I got my 486DX33… I bought some of the games I ever wanted to have – but most of them I never played...

About one year ago I wondered whether it is possible to emulate the good old DOS and to play these old games. I found a lot of emulators but I stuck with a great program called DOSBox. Back in that days it was a lot of typing to set up memory, drives and start a game. And so it is with the DOSBox.
For that case there are also some nice Wizards with which you can easily configure DOSBox and organize the settings for your old games. Most of them can be freely downloaded in web. The tool which I prefer is called D-Fend. Unfortunately its not maintained anymore.
But how to get the games when you not own them? Old games which are no longer available for legitimate purchase are called abandonware. Since this term has no legal meaning, you should inform yourself before downloading and using abandonware. There are a lot of websites in the web where you can find abandonware. This is no demand to download and use copyright protected software and the desicion is up to you.

Now you have everything you need to go back in time and check out all the games you ever wanted to play.
But I know its hard to remember what games were the most treasured in the good old days. To jog your memory a little bit, I want to establish the Abandon Monday! At every Monday I will recall an old game. And the choice which game will be highlighted is up to you! Use the poll on the right side to select the game you like most. The first Abandon Monday will take place at September 2nd. In the meantime (while I wait for your numerous votes) I'm going to post some hints how to bring up the old games.

So lets start going back in time. But be careful: the old games can be even more addictive than the current ones...

Subscribe to this blog

BMX... Every year during the big summer school holidays they showed some movies for kinds at the theater. In the year 1989 it was a movie called "Die BMX Bande". This boy was me and even though nobody knew what BMX means, we went in. The movie changed the lives of the most of us...

We saw BMX bikes and guys with cool protection stuff riding them. I still remember the protection masks the guys wore (now I know their purpose was to hide the stuntman). But anyway, the tricks we saw really amazed us. I shouldn't forget to tell you about the thrilling story about some bad guys robbing banks and the heroic BMX riders, who stopped them. But the story wasn't the point for us, which made us loving this movie. There was also this cute curly girl, who also was great with her bike. Back then I didn't know that the actress was Nicole Kidman.
Last but not least the scene which amazed us the most was when our heroes used a tubular water slide to get rid of their chasers. The only slide we had ever seen was straight and about 4 meters long...
After seeing this movie, everybody wants to have a BMX bike. Only a few got one. I belonged to the lucky guys. We never got to the level of Goose, P.J. or Judy, but we had a great times watching this movie and riding our bikes...

I really love this movie! Of course not the ear itself but one plug of my headphones got soundless. Damn! 5 minutes to walk with only half of the in-ear entertainment left. The first thing I had done at work was searching for a replacement. Of course I wanted a way better replacement! I remembered a friend of mine showed me a Sennheiser headphone. He was pretty content with this earplugs. I found the Sennheiser CX300 headphones for a good price. Today I got them!
I have to admit that headphones can look good! They are white with white cable. Not bad - but that isn't that important for headsets. Since the CX300 headphones should be placed tightly within your ear canal (intra aural), ear adapters in three different sizes are enclosed. My first impression was "is this really my music?". It sounds like a cow peeing into a bucket. I tried to put the plugs deeper into my ear and then it happened!
Really great bass-driven and powerful sound. And the best thing about these headphones is that your will hear nothing but your music! Your environment is almost mute. Its pretty cool when you only see your colleagues moving their lips...

Subscribe to this blog

Dead Silence - therefore I hate dolls!

©Universal Pictures

Nuremberg, Germany August 1st - that’s the day from which on I hate dolls. The whole time before I thought a guy with his hand in the back of such a doll is funny show. Not anymore!
At this day I saw the movie Dead Silence. It was shown in the course of the 21st Fantasy Filmfest. The story is about a guy whose wife was killed after he got a mysterious package with a doll. This doll belongs to a old (and dead) lady, who is a little bit pissed because she was murdered by the some residents of a village. But I don't want to tell too much in the case you still want to watch the movie.
It is a very good movie. The director (James Wan - yes the "Saw" guy) put a lot of scary mood in it. It wasn't that gory as I had expected it. So you definitely should see it if you hadn't yet.
Damn I hate this dolls!

You can also check out an other movie - Fido - which also was shown at Fantasy Filmfest.

Subscribe to this blog

Finally: Warhawk is ready to go!

An other PS3 exclusive title is ready to be launched: Warhawk!
My first impressions regarding the game were very good. I recently had a look at some ingame screenshots. Most of them look amazing. I also saw a gameplay video showing the functionality of the sixaxis controller. Nice!
You want to know how much money you have to spend for this at August 28th? You can choose between about 40$ or 60$. Why different pricing? For 40$ you can download it from the PlayStation Store. With the retail version for 60$ you will get a Bluetooth headset and "traditional" package and manual.
I would definitely buy it, but before I can do that, I have to fill the empty space reserved for a PS3...
Subscribe to this blog

GTA IV comes 2008

No!
