A new wave of details and even more questions related to the disclosure of Hotmail, MSN, and Live! credentials were recently revealed by Neowin.com. The BBC reported on another 20,000 credentials posted on pastebin.com. They also disclosed that Google found a third list of credentials of undisclosed size.

The credentials were not limited to Microsoft services; they also included Yahoo!, Gmail, AOL, Comcast, and Earthlink. The breadth and scope of this is intriguing as Microsoft and Google both have made statements insisting it is the result of phishing.

I am not willing to say it is not phishing, or related to phishing; however, it could be a combination of attacks leading to this large quantity of compromised accounts. Many trojans and other malware capture and upload any credentials cached by Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I recently mentioned the chance this was related to a MSN Messenger friends block verification scam that was popular at the end of August and beginning of September. Earlier, SophosLabs reported on a similar scam targeting Microsoft passwords. This alone implies that if it is only phishing, multiple tactics were taken.

Many users have expressed concern to me today regarding the difficulty in changing their Microsoft credentials. When logging into your Hotmail or other Live! ID account it is not obvious how to change your password. You wouldn’t think Microsoft would make something so important so difficult, but they do. Here is the easiest way I have found to change your Live!/Passport password.

Go to <a href="http://login.live.com<br" title="http://login.live.com
login.live.com<br />Enter your email address and password for the account in question
Select Credentials
Choose Change your password
While entering the details I recommend checking the box “Make my password expire every 72 days”

You might ask, “Why would these thieves post these passwords in a public forum?”. This is not entirely clear, but the precedent would be credit card thieves. They often steal hundreds, or thousands of cards and post a sample on underground message boards to demonstrate that they have real cards. Then they are able to sell the rest with the purchaser having been able to test the validity of their claim.
If the 30,000 are a limited sample of what they have obtained, then this could be a demonstration to potential customers of the stolen logins. If this is true the 30,000 users are the lucky ones. . .

Microsoft, Google and the others can lock these accounts and prevent their further abuse. The remaining undisclosed accounts are free for the taking if users don’t hear the message to change their passwords and better protect their identities.

What value do stolen email accounts have? Two primary scams come to mind.

The hackers are able to penetrate the trust barrier. Your webmail account often contains a list of friends, family and acquaintances who trust you. This enables the attacker to victimize these contacts by virtue of their relationship with you.

Logging into your account hackers are able to determine what other online services you use, and are able to perform password resets. This widens the net of identities they can capture and potentially enables them to reset your passwords to bank accounts, online payment systems, and other critical accounts.

If it is not already clear, reset all of your passwords. Be more vigilant than ever about clicking links in emails, even links on search engines. Only provide your credentials to websites that provide the service for which the user ID belongs.

Are you truly frustrated with the speed of your personal computer while doing your work? For computer running really slow – fix with registry cleaner.

What is a registry? A registry refers to the place where windows stores up information. It could be anything, even information when you open an application. If there are various users for your computer, there is a higher tendency for your registry to clog up over time.

The registry stores the necessary information according to each user. As time goes on, some of the information in the windows registry might not be used any longer. This could simply cause clogging problems for the registry. Therefore, cleaning your registry would be advisable.

During the cleaning process, your computer might ask you if you want to delete a certain file or simply skip the process. Normally, it is should be fine to delete the file. However, it is not good idea to clean the windows registry by yourself. You might accidentally delete important files that are pertinent to your software applications and other computer settings.

You would not know which files are related to which software applications and so forth. Therefore, when it comes to computer running really slow -fix with registry cleaner as a wise move. This also applies to a computer that is very slow to boot. There could be other reasons as well.

Check your hard disk drive space to make sure that you have not used up more than eighty percent of the allocated space. If you did, delete unnecessary data files and save some in a USB key or other external storage devices. Since one of the reasons for a slowly running computer and booting system could be the windows registry, it is better to have a registry cleaner installed on your computer.

Are you looking to clean up your computer with the Best Registry Repair Software? But it takes up lots of computer resource and what’s annoying is that we can’t completely uninstall it and remove all its components. Luckily, we found a professional uninstaller specifized in uninstalling Kaspersky.

You may find that Control Panel Add/ Remove Programs can’t completely uninstall Kaspersky Anti Virus and all its components, for you still see Kaspersky folder and can’t install other anti virus. So we use another effective way-uninstall with a third party uninstaller named Perfect Uninstaller. We are not going to remove it manually, for we don’t know how to edit registry and find its registry entries.

Steps 1: Restart your computer, keep press F8 Key, use your arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter Key.

Step 2: Run Perfect Uninstaller and Force Uninstall Kaspersky.

Its path is C:Program Files. Its Force Uninstall engine will automatically scan out all its registry entries and drivers in your computer. What you need to do is to repeat the Force Uninstall until its folder is deleted by Perfect Uninstaller.

Step 3: Restart your computer and Kaspersky Anti Virus is completely uninstalled.

For more detailed information on how to completely uninstall Kaspersky Anti Virus, plz visit Kasperky Uninstall Tutorial.

Generally speaking, if you still see a program folder after Control Panel uninstallation, there’s a great chance that its registry entris and drivers are left in your computer. If you have difficutly in uninstalling other software, you can also use Perfect Uninstaller and completely remove any software even they don’t show up in the Add/ Remove Programs list.

Download Perfect Uninstaller and Start Uninstall Your Program!

Have you recently started receiving many pop up messages or security notifications by Control Manager? If so, you must seriously think about your computer’s protection.

Control Manager is a scam application that infects computer systems completely secretly and doesn’t require authorization of the user in order to be installed. The program uses Trojan viruses for the infiltration.

Once it gets the access to the system, Control Manager makes some modifications in the Windows Registry. The installation of Control Manger is complete when you reboot your computer. When the Windows starts, Control Manager starts running Ccagent.exe and Ccmain.exe files. Then the program runs its scanner which only imitates looking for infections. Finally, the scanner of Control Manager reports about the presence of tons of infections on your system and advices getting rid of them by purchasing a so-called full version of Control Manager.

Secondly, the program generates tons of pop ups which are displayed when you just log in to Windows, while you are running some program and no matter what you do. These messages will become very irritating as you will not be able to control them and they will disturb all your computer sessions. The purpose of such pop ups is to convince you into believing that your system is badly infected and make you purchase a commercial version of Control Manager program anyway.

You shouldn’t trust anything that Control Manager says as it’s a badware created to steal money. By no means pay for it and if you already have, please contact your bank and dispute the charges. Otherwise, you will only pay cyber criminals and make profit for them.

Remove Control Manager from your computer as soon as you notice its first traces. Trust that it is not an application to keep on your system.

A patch is generally the term used to refer to pieces of software that are created to give updates or fixes to existing programs that need to be rehashed or repaired. Patches fixes bugs, replaces graphics and improves a program’s performance or functionality. Patches are very useful and are usually needed if there are certain imperfections in the programs you are using, however, patches that are not made perfectly can also lead to other problems.

What are the Type of Patches?

Programmers create different forms of patches, each having its own function and characteristics. Software that have proprietary policies are delivered as executable files instead of sources. Such types of patches alters the executable program run by the user by either completely replacing the entire executable program or just making changes to the binary file.

Other patches may also be circulated as actual source code themselves. In such cases, there would be certain textual differentiation between the original source code and the one included in the patch. Such kinds of patches are made for projects that have open sources. For these types of patches, the programmers assume that the users would be able to do the update themselves without the help of executable files.

Patches may also come in larger forms. And since the term patch is usually associated with small or short fixes, bigger patches are sometimes called service packs or software updates. Microsoft Windows are known to use such terms to refer to their updates. However, even in the guise of another name, they are still patches nonetheless.

Other operating systems such, as Linux, among other systems that are similar to Unix, have patches that are distributed as full software packages. Such patches have their own installers that work so that they can serve as an upgrade to current existing versions or as stand-alone installers that can be set up by themselves.

How are patches used?

Patch sizes vary and may be as small as some kilobytes or go as high as a hundred megabytes and higher – the larger the size, the larger the change the patch is bound to do. Typically, when media, such as pictures and sounds, are changed or added instead of program, files become rather large. This is usually seen in patches designed to update or modify computer games.

Unlike software designed for initial installation process, patches generally are faster to apply. Some patches may be acquired from the manufacturers and sent to users in diskettes or discs, while others may be downloaded through the internet. Patches that are downloadable could take longer to acquire depending on the connection speed.

Most patches that are designed for operating systems and software for computer servers are created to fix important holes in the security system. Some operating systems allow automatic update or semi-automatic updating that allow the continual feed of patches whenever there are changes done by their authors.

A lot of people, especially those in the corporate world, decline getting totally automatic updates because there were many experiences of patches causing glitches. Some software experts also believe that allowing totally automatic updates may let software companies acquire limitless control over people’s computers. Thus, varying degrees of automation has been offered in relation to getting patches.

The use of totally automatic updates is rather more popular for the consumers because most operating systems, Microsoft Windows in particular, have added them as a support tool. The automatic updates for Windows has also been set as default by its creators.

Some users, especially network system managers, are very wary about installing patches. They put off applying them until they have clear proof that the fixes are stable. Most large patches or those that promote sudden significant alterations are distributed first with limited availability as beta tests for qualified developers who would know what to do in case something wrong happens.

Patches that are made to modify the programming of hardware are called firmware and are rather challenging because they entail complicated steps such as re-embedding sets of code on devices that involves that total modification and installation new codes for programs instead of just simple alterations to the existing version. Usually such patches perform delicate modification processes that could compromise the device if not installed properly, rendering it useless.

Do you really need patches?

There is no quick answer to this question. Patches are intended to improve the performance of your programs, however, they have to be very stable so that they would not do more harm than good. Before installing a patch, check for its stability by asking around about reported problems with installation.

You can check internet forums regarding users’ experiences with the particular patch you are about to apply. It is usually wise to put off the patch installation for some time before going with it to see how people react to its effects.

You’ve noticed that your computer is a little slower than usual. You thought you saw a new mysterious icon in your system tray. Then there are those odd error messages you’ve been getting. Does your computer have a problem? Something that wasn’t caught by your antivirus? If you even suspect that your computer may be infected, you should run a spyware detector and check. Spyware is far too dangerous to your online privacy and your computer to ignore.

Scammers are Out to Get You

Spyware is the term for a particularly nasty type of malicious software that infects your computer, steals your private data, and sends that data back to thieves who then use the information to make your life miserable, often through identity theft. At least, that’s the goal.

A lot of spyware falls far short of the level of danger, but as if to compensate it makes up for it in levels of annoyance. A lot of spyware will pop-up windows when you attempt to browse the web, and hijack your browser to strange websites. You may get new toolbars in your web browser, or your homepage may change to a site full of advertisements. The very worst of the bunch will delete random files from your hard drive, slowly destroying your system and anything you have stored on your computer.

Browse the Web? You Might Have Spyware

Getting spyware is entirely too easy. Unlike viruses, it has to be installed, but because software installation on Windows is very easy this isn’t much of a barrier. Spyware creators will try to convince you that their software is useful and worth installing, often in the space of a short pop-up advertisement, and if you succumb to the temptations your computer will be infected. Sometimes you will see a pop-up that claims your computer is infected and you need to install a “removal tool” to clean it up. The removal tool is spyware, and it’s a scam to get you to put it on your computer.

You Need Technical Skills to Remove Spyware

Removing spyware is never easy. The creators of spyware don’t want you to take it off, because then they lose their source of data and money. So they may include an un-installation program, but it won’t work 100%. Getting rid of spyware requires a bit of dedication to the cause and a few technical skills. Can you stop processes, edit the registry, and delete hidden files? You might be able to manually remove spyware if you have those skills and are able to identify what spyware is infecting your computer. If not, you need that spyware detector to find and remove the spyware for you.

Choose an Antispyware Program Wisely

There are a lot of antispyware programs available. A lot of them work to varying degrees, but you need to do a bit of research before installing one. This is because the spyware creators are clever enough to pretend that their spyware actually is a spyware detector and remover.

Before you download that antispyware, find out who makes it and if they are a legitimate company. Check out reviews of the product, and read the guarantee to make sure it offers what you need. Take back your computer from the scammers and identity thieves who think you are easy prey.

Try a free SpyZooka scan now from http://www.spyzooka.com to find out if your computer is infected with malicious programs and protect it from future problems.
The best analysis I can find on what Unu encountered when he stumbled upon Roosevelt University’s calendar database was posted at the Praetorian Prefect blog.

So what actually happened? It appears that the secure areas of barackobama.com (those that use HTTPS:/) had an open redirector that could be used to proxy all traffic through the Obama website.

While the site’s data itself may not have been compromised, the site was still not properly secured. As the folks at Praetorian pointed out, there are several ways to exploit this flaw that could affect the security of my.barackobama.com users.

Web browsers protect cookies by allowing only the originating domain to read those cookies later. When you log in to my.barackobama.com, the site sets a cookie to remember who you are as you blog, plan fundraisers, and plan events.

The proxy capability provided by the smartproxy functionality that was left open could allow an attacker to direct you to a link that appears to be part of barackobama.com, yet leads you to their website proxied by the Obama server.

Your browser would then allow the third party site to read any cookies set and allow the attacker to impersonate you on the barackobama.com website.

Fortunately, Obama’s site did not store logins for the donation area, and it appears only my.barackobama.com was vulnerable to being hijacked.

Obama’s team and Blue State Digital went to great lengths to downplay this issue, but the fact remains that the insecure practice of allowing unfettered proxy traffic could pose a real risk.

A user of pastebin discovered through a simple Google search that many sites that are hosted by Blue State Digital contain the same unrestricted proxy code.

At the time of writing, the code on Blue State Digital’s servers appears to be restricted to a limited number of authorized domains.

Spammers have used redirectors like the one found on Blue State’s sites to scam users for many years now.

It allows them to send out URLs that are arguably legitimate to an innocent surfer and still redirect them to something that is malicious and may steal data from the intermediate website.

People also use unauthenticated proxies to subvert corporate or school proxy systems that block sites based upon their reputation or content.

By manipulating the URL, you could surf anything on the web through an HTTPS session that is unlikely to be blocked by any web filtering solutions.

If you host or design your own websites, be sure to restrict any code you use to redirect users to other sites to prevent these type of attacks.

The cost to you may be more than your cookies, not to mention the bandwidth consumed by people who may use your site as a free proxy service.

To prevent your users from accidentally being redirected to malicious content through a URL that appears to be from a safe and reputable web destination, be sure you have web filtering technology that can look into HTTPS traffic, and perform proper malware filtering that is not just reputation-based. It’s never fun to lose your cookies.
