Sony Xperia Play : Mini Review

I just recieved my Sony Xperia Play , I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this unit ever since the first leaked screen shots appeared online. The packaging is pretty standard but it's a Verizon release so I wasn't expecting much. Once I opened it up I found the unit , battery , usb data cable , charger , & headset adapter. I plugged in the battery & powered it on, my first nag is that it is only running 2.3.2, not the 2.3.3 I was expecting it to ship with but I was assured a OTA Update is coming very soon. So I pushed out the slide out game pad & the Xperia Play App launched showcasing the 7 games included ( Madden 2011, Bruce Lee, Crash Bandicoot, Sims 3, Asphalt 6, Star Battalion, & BattleField Bad Company 2 ) + a section showcasing other games optimized for the Xperia ready for online purchase / install ( Nova 2, Modern Combat 2, Avatar, Splinter Cell, Spiderman, Assassin's Creed, & more ). I tapped on Madden & was prompted to enable wifi & download the remaining portion of the game ( all Xperia games save only a small portion on the internal memory card & then connect to a server to authenticate & download the rest of the game wich is stored on your external sd card ). It was quick & soon I was playing Madden 2011, as good / maybe even a bit better looking than the PSP version. I had to test out the rest of the games so I went through the same click then download process, Asphalt 6, BattleField 2, & Star Battalion looked & played awesome in my opinion ( they will be regulars on my system ) while the other games played just fine, Crash Bandicoot even got a graphics upgrade from it's PSOne version, they just aren't my thing. I downloaded Nova 2, Assassin's Creed, Let's Golf 2, Fifa 2011, Avatar, Radiant HD, & Super K.O. Boxing 2 all of wich played great ( by great I mean much better than on any other Android or Iphone for that matter device ). The controls where excellent, graphics top notch, Sony definately got it right. My only big complaint about the device is the undersized internal storage, almost all mid-high end Android devices are shipping with around 8gb internal or more so I was shocked & dissapointed when I started running into low memory warning's & I hadn't even installed my emulators or standard games like Angry Birds Series. I will update the post tomorrow after some more time playing around, I love it we just need a working ROOT / Custom Rom to polish things off.

Remote Control Robots & More with Android

This is really cool & opens up a world of options. I'm in the planning/mockup stages of my own Android Controlled Vehicle. I will be using a HTC Droid Eris & a RC Helicopter ( actually classified as a U.A.V ). My plan involvels dissasembling the Droid Eris and mounting the various parts including the battery so that they add as little weight as possible since i want it to fly, plus mount the camera lens on the nose of the RC so I can attempt to pilot the craft using the Live Video Feed + GPS & other Sensor's information to keep it on course & attempt a landing that doesn't result in catastrophe . Check these guys out though , they have done a lot of the leg work for me. After the break.

We used an iRobot Create, a Nexus One (with car dock), a Nexus S, and a Chrome OS Cr-48 notebook but only a single phone is required.

The app also works with LEGO MINDSTORMS, VEX Pro, and the custom Arduino cellbots and is available free in the Android Market for any Android 2.2 (Froyo) and up phone. Running Android on large touch screen displays

Forget Microsoft Surface, what do you think about having a 32-inch Android-powered touchscreen display in your living room? That possibility might not be too far off, thanks to the engineers over at SKR Technology in Japan.

Primarily a company that designs and builds digital signage, they were approached by several customers who wanted a large screen device that had multi-touch functionality similar to a smartphone. Since they frequently work with Windows, they tried building a solution around Windows 7, but it just didn’t function as smoothly as they would like. Instead they turned towards Android, but were disappointed to find out that none of their suppliers supported the OS.

Instead of scrapping the project, they build their own interface that allows an Android-powered device to interact with multi-touch displays. As you can see in the video embedded below the display works quite well, mirroring everything on the Android device’s screen.

While the product is not yet available commercially, we should see it come to market later this year. We hope to see an open source version sometime in the future as well, even if we can’t quite afford a 32” touch panel display.

At the Google I/O conference a month ago, we demonstrated the next version of the Android Development Tools (ADT) plugin. Today we’re happy to announce that version 11 is done and available for download!

ADT 11 focuses on editor improvements. First, it offers several new visual refactoring operations, such as “Extract Include” and “Extract Style,” which help automatically extract duplicated layout fragments and style attributes into reusable layouts, styles, and themes.

Second, the visual layout editor now supports fragments, palette configurations, and improved support for custom views.

Last, XML editing has been improved with new quick fixes, code completion in more file types and many “go to declaration” enhancements.

ADT 11 packs a long list of new features and enhancements. Please visit our ADT page for more details. For an in-depth demo, check out the video of our Android Development Tools session at Google I/O, below.

Please note that the visual layout editor depends on a layout rendering library that ships with each version of the platform component in the SDK. We are currently working on a number of improvements to this library as well, which we plan to release soon for all platform versions. When we release the updates, some new features in ADT 11 will be “unlocked” - such as support for ListView previewing - so keep an eye on this blog for further announcements.

The more you teach it the better it's responses will get, I know of one such Bot that actually tricked millions of Facebook & Twitter Users that it was a real person for over a month

This is my first attempt at actual programming for the Android & PS3 Platforms . I have a lot of experience hacking the devices , rooting , unlocking , custom roms & firmwares so I will still cover some of this stuff as well . I am going to start by creating a couple of themes for each platform & then move on to basic apps / games . I will also try my hand at porting some software . Stay tuned for updates & lots of Downloads .

Z4root on a new Droid , no computer needed

I just recieved a Motorola Droid in the mail today & had to Root it immediately . I was able to do it all on the phone , no need for cables & ADB . I downloaded a program ( Z4root.apk) trhat I discovered during a Google search . I downloaded it with the phones stock browser , installed it using the built in package manager app , & then proceeded to enable USB Debugging & Enable the installation of non market downloads . It was incredibly easy & took only minutes . I havnt flashed a custom rom yet but I did download SetCPU & overclocked it . Ill post some screen shots & pics soon .

Install Hiren's BootCD onto USB Drive

Step 1
Connect USB Pen Drive (512MB or more)

Step 2
Download and Run USB Disk Storage Format USBFormat.zip (34KB)

Step 3
Download grubinst_gui grub4dos.zip (188KB) and Run as Administrator

Step 4
Copy grldr and menu.lst (from HBCD folder) to the usb drive

Step 5
Insert the BootCD (9.7 or newer) in the CD Drive and Copy everything from CD to USB Flash Drive

Step 6
Test Your USB Drive (read bottom of the page for troubleshoot)
Make sure you set your computer to boot from USB Flash Drive

To Enter the BIOS press the "Del" button on your keyboard. Alternatives are "F1", "F2", "Insert", and "F10". Some PC's BIOS might even require a different key to be pressed. Commonly a PC will show a message like "Press [Del] to enter Setup" to indicate that you need to press the "Del" key. Some AMI BIOS require you to enable the option "USB Keyboard Legacy support"!

For AMI BIOS:
Go to "Feature Setup". "Enable" these options: "USB Function Support",
"USB Function For DOS" and "ThumbDrive for DOS". Go to "Advanced Setup".
Set the "1st Boot Device" to "USB RMD-FDD".
Reboot the PC and it now should boot from the Usb Stick.

Go to "USB Mass Storage Device Configuration". Select "Emulation Type"
and set it to "Harddisk". Go to the "Boot Menu" and set the "1st boot device" to "USB-Stick". Exit the BIOS, saving the changes.
you can try "Emulation Type" to "Floppy" or "Forced FDD".

For PHOENIX/AWARD BIOS:
Go to "Advanced BIOS Features". Go to the "1st Boot device" and set it to "USB-ZIP".
Troubleshoot

If you get GRLDR error then use syslinux to boot grub4dos
