A Bullseye View of Web Analytics

Target is an international discount department store retailer that now has 1,797 brick-and-mortar stores spread across the United States, an additional 124 stores in Canada, as well as locations in the growing market of India (Corporate Fact Sheet, 2013). Additionally, the company has thirty-seven distribution centers, 361,000 team members around the world, and of course its online ecommerce site, target.com (Corporate Fact Sheet, 2013).

Since the first store opened in Rossville, Minnesota in 1962, Target has grown to become one of the top retailers in the United States. The brand has made a pretty good name for itself over the years by providing high quality merchandise at discounted prices, which has attracted a customer base consisting mostly of middle-class families with an annual household income of roughly $64k (Corporate Fact Sheet, 2013).

With technology continuing to develop at a rapid rate in the U.S., shopping online has become less frightening than when it was first introduced to the consumer market. The popularity of online shopping has given rise to numerous online-only retailers such as Amazon.com and has also led to the vast majority of brick-and-mortar retailers expanding their brands via an ecommerce site. But even with all of the competition, especially is the department store industry, Target has managed to become the second largest general merchandise retailer in the United States, with its ecommerce site, target.com, being ranked as one of the most visited websites (Corporate Fact Sheet, 2013).

Target launched its first online website in 1999 and partnered with Amazon to help perfect the customer shopping experience online. But, in 2009, Target decided to end its decade long relationship with Amazon, despite the fact that Amazon had spent years developing technology to help perfect the online customer experience (Zmuba & Patel, 2011). Because the company was growing at such a substantial rate, Target decided it would be best for it to develop its own ecommerce technology and create and manage its own website (Zmuba & Patel, 2011).

First Target Website

So, instead of using Google Analytics or other Analytics tools as a primary way to track its web analytics, Target decided to do things a little differently and develop its own website and tracking systems. To help Target in its endeavor to gain control for the first time over its online website and sales, the company recruited help from more than 20 vendors, which included IBM, Endeca, Infosys, and appointed SapientNitro as its partner and lead integrator (Zmuba & Patel, 2011).

At the beginning of this new venture, things didn’t seem to go exactly as Target might of hoped. According to the AdAge article published shortly after the redesigned target.com was launched, Target's Site Plagued by Glitches, Friction Between Marketing and Tech Teams, the company faced a long list of problems only six weeks after the site launch which included broken links, missing registries, and shopping carts that seemed to be doing more of the shopping than the actual customers.

Although the company may not have been up to speed on how to create a website and use analytics in a timely fashion to gain a better understanding of where on the site customers were having the most problems, Target was already ahead of the game when it came to tracking customers data online. Target statistician, Andrew Pole had already developed a system for how Target would collect customers (or “guests” as Target refers to them as) information in order to effectively market to them efficiently as possible.

According to a blog post from Avinash Kaushik, the diagram created and presented by Pole at a predictive analytics conference showed “the variables in play that Target collects (across online and offline touch points, mobile and desktop) and ties to the Guest ID (you) in order to do better marketing.” Below is Pole’s diagram titled Bringing It All Together: Guest ID:

As you can see, this model has various paths that data can take in order to link a user to their unique Guest ID.

If you ask me, that’s a pretty incredible amount of data Target is able to collect about each customer and store it under each customers own Guest ID. This model allows the company to analyze every point of interaction the brand has with every customer and combining customer behaviors both online and offline to determine the best way to market to them. Back in 2010, Pole also stated, “that Target was able to associate half of its in-store sales, nearly all of its online sales and about a quarter of all online cookies with specific Guest IDs” (Hill, 2012).

In his presentation at the predictive analytics conference, Pole explained the personal information Target would collect for each customer in order to associate them with his or her Guest ID. “It starts with name, address and tender (the credit card or debit card you use) and expands from there to a history of your store purchases, online purchases, mobile phone ID, actions taken in response to Target emails, and Internet browsing activity if you click on a link in one of those emails” (Hill, 2012). Additionally, according to Hill (2012), Target uses its combined analytics system and location data to steer customers living near a competitor to shop at target.com instead.

Target also has a potential value model that allows the company to determine how much each customer could potentially spend. Also in his conference presentation Pole explains, “With data mined from past years’ spending and demographic databases — showing whether Antonia’s married, whether she has children, what her job is, the average income for her neighborhood — ‘we think she should be spending $5000’” (Hill, 2012). So, if Antonia’s data reveals she was only spending $1,000 a year, Target will continue marketing towards her. However, if a customer is spending $1,000 a year and the data leads Target to believe that is all he or she can spend based on discretionary income, then Target will stop marketing towards that customer in order to save the company money (Hill, 2012).

Target also uses customer data both online and offline to determine the coupon value they will offer to each customer. If the data for a specific customer from both online and in-store coupon redemptions reveals that a $1 coupon is enough to get that person to make a purchase, then the company will likely continue offering coupons for that amount. Target personalizes customer coupons so the value is equal to the amount that the data predicts will push them to make a purchase.

In its current Privacy Policy, Target states that the company may automatically connect information they already have about you in order to identify your Guest ID. Below is the Automated Information Collection section of the Privacy Policy:

Automated Information Collection

We may connect information collected automatically with information we already have about you in order to identify you as a Target guest. If we are able to identify you as a Target guest we may, for example, link your activity on our website to your activity in a Target store. This allows us to provide you with a personalized experience regardless of how you interact with us – online, in store, mobile, etc.

Automated Information Collection

We and our service providers use cookies, web beacons, and other technologies to receive and store certain types of information whenever you interact with us through your computer or mobile device. This information, which includes the pages you visit on our site, which web address you came from, the type of browser/device/hardware you are using, purchase information and checkout process, search terms and IP-based geographic location, helps us recognize you, customize your website experience and make our marketing messages more relevant. This includes Target content presented on another website or mobile application, for example, Target Weekly Ad. These technologies also enable us to provide features such as storage of items in your cart between visits and Short Message Service (SMS)/text messages you have chosen to recieve. We also use Flash cookies for fraud prevention purposes.

In order to provide the best guest experience possible, we also use these technologies for reporting and analysis purposes, such as how you are shopping our website, performance of our marketing efforts, and your response to those marketing efforts.

Overall, Target has developed and implemented a sophisticated methods and technologies to track customers behaviors both online and offline to determine the most efficient and effective marketing efforts. In terms of creating a better experience online for customers (and that I’m sure Target is already doing) A/B testing could be used to help with effective site design. I would also suggest using a heat mapping tool because from my own personal experiences I think the homepage can become a little cluttered, especially during the holidays, making it harder to navigate.

Seeing the Big Picture

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, Google Analytics definitely takes some time getting use to. It’s easy to become wrapped up in all of the numbers and graphs when first setting up tracking for a website, which is exactly what I did when I was first introduced to the tool six weeks ago. But, each week I have found it easier and easier to navigate the dashboard and have become much more comfortable with the overall layout of GA. I have also gained a much better understanding of the valuable information each of the different measurements and metrics has the potential to provide and how different metrics can be used together to provide even more in-depth data.

This week’s lesson examined Google’s customizable goals, funnels, and filters, which really helped me to put the last few missing puzzle pieces together and see the “big picture”. Understanding the basic concepts of page views, unique visitors, bounce rate, etc., is definitely important in order to use the tool effectively, but those metrics alone can’t provide you with the data needed to determine the success of your website. Plus, the critical factors for determining success are unique to each business, which is why using goals, funnels, and filters are so important.

Goals

Google defines goals as being “a versatile way to measure how well your site or app fulfills your target objectives” (About Goals, 2013). In other words, goals allow you to tell Google what to keep track of based on what’s important to your business. GA provides four ways for users to track goals:

URL destination
Visit duration
Pages/visit
Events

URL Destination

This goal allows you to track specific URL’s by specifying a page’s unique URI (Uniform Resource Identifier), which are the characters that come after the domain name. For example, if the URL is www.mybusiness.com/aboutus, the “Goal URL” you would enter into Analytics would be “/aboutus”. Each time someone visits that URL, they will trigger the goal (Lofgren, 2012). This goal type is often used for tracking sales by using the confirmation page URL or for tracking new subscription or account sign-ups via a Thank you for registering webpage.

Visit Duration

The visit duration goals allow you to track how many people stay on your site for a specified amount of time. This goal gives you the option to track whether visitors stay "less than" or "greater than" the amount of time you specify. For example, a support site looking to answer customers’ questions as quickly as possible might want to track how many visitors stayed less than 5 minutes. On the other hand, a company that has just made design changes to its site may want to track how many users stay longer than 2 minutes to help determine whether or not the changes made are leading to a higher level of customer engagement.

While this goal type can be very useful, one thing to keep in mind is how Google tracks visit durations. GA only creates a timestamp when a visitor loads a page but not when a visitor leaves a page. So, in order to calculate the time spent on one page, two timestamps (one when the first page visited is loaded and another when the second page visited is loaded) are needed. Ultimately this means Google Analytics is unable to calculate the visit duration for exit pages.

For example, if a visitor enters a website on the homepage, spends a minute or two browsing, then clicks to another page on your site, Google will calculate the time spent on the homepage by subtracting the timestamp created when the second page was loaded from the time when the homepage was loaded. But, if a visitor only visits one page and leaves, Google doesn’t have a second timestamp to calculate the time spent on the first page. If a visitor visits 3 pages, only the visit duration for the first and second pages can be calculated. Google documents the time for page visits with only one timestamp as 00:00:00 regardless of how long the visitor actually remained on the page.

According to the KISSmetrics blog post, 4 Google Analytics Goal Types That Are Critical To Your Business, this will likely result in the time on site metric being very different than the actual amount of time people spend on your site. However, you can still gain valuable from this goal type by comparing the metric over time and looking for any trends in how the metric changes month-to-month or over an extended period of time (Lofgren, 2012).

Pages/Visits

This goal type is very straightforward and tracks the number of pages a visitor visits before leaving your site. Similar to the visit duration goal, you have the option of tracking greater than, equal to, or less than the number of pages visited that you will specify during the goal set-up. The “greater than” condition is typically used to measure visitor engagement and the “less than” condition is often used by support sites to measure the site’s effectiveness (Lofgren, 2012).

Events

Google defines events as “user interactions with content that can be tracked independently from a web page or screen load” (About Events, 2013). Examples of actions you can track as events include downloads, video plays, mobile ad clicks, widget usage, social media buttons, etc.

However, before you are able to track an event goal, you must first take the time to set up event tracking and have created at least event category.

Funnels

A funnel can help take a URL destination goal to the next level by tracking the path visitors take towards the end goal. Because there are typically several other pages preceding the goal page that are designed to push visitors towards the goal, funnels can help pinpoint any problems along visitors’ conversion paths, giving you the chance to make any necessary changes.

According to Fettman (2012), funnel tracking can help:

· Identify any steps creating trouble or confusion for customers
· Determine if there is any language or copy that is causing changes in customers’ emotional behaviors during sign-up or checkout
· Detect any bugs, browser issues, or any other technical troubles

Additionally, funnels can help you see how often visitors abandon a goal and where these visitors go after abandonment.

Funnels can be especially beneficial for ecommerce sites because visitors typically follow only a few paths before landing on the confirmation page. By using funnels, you can see if there are any pages along the path to conversion that consistently result in shopping cart abandonment. If a trouble page is identified, you can revisit the page and make any necessary adjustments in order to make the checkout process easier and more streamlined. By monitoring the funnel tracking, you can then determine whether or not the changes made to a specific change are resulting in more or less shopping cart abandonment than before.

Filters

In her article Going Beyond Standard Reporting with Google Analytics Filters, Segments, Reports, and Dashboards, Hines (2013) explains, “View Filters allow you to include or exclude specific information in your Google Analytics reports, focus on a specific subdomain or directory, or rename URLs to make them easily recognizable.”

There are 3 predefined filters, which include:

· Traffic from domains: This filter allows you to include or exclude traffic from a specific domain.
· Traffic from IP addressed: You can use this filter to include or exclude clicks from certain sources. This can be a single IP address or a range of addresses. This filter is commonly used by companies to exclude traffic from internal IP addresses in order to avoid measuring traffic from employees or an IT person conducting site maintenance.
· Traffic from subdirectories: Through this filter you can include or exclude traffic from a specific subdirectory (such as www.example.com/education).

In addition to these predefined filters, Google Analytics also provides numerous custom filters. Some of these filters include the Lower/Uppercase filter, which converts all field contents to either all lower or all uppercase letters, and the Search & Replace filter, which allows you to search and replace a confusing pattern within a field and replace it with an alternate form that is easier to recognize.

Conclusion…

Goals, funnels, and filters can help you go beyond the standard reporting offered by Google Analytics.

· Goals allow you to track the data most important to your company
· Funnels are an extension of Destination goals that allow you to see the number of people that move through each step of your specified marketing process to help determine pages that may need to be fixed
· Filters allow you to modify your traffic data by using the 3 predefined filters to include/exclude traffic from a specific domain, IP address or addresses, and particular subdirectories

These traffic parameters can greatly benefit businesses by providing valuable information that can be used to track the most important factors for a company’s site, quickly identify problems in a key process to help create a better user experience, and to customize reports in order to effectively analyze and share in-depth data.

Google Analytics: Valuable Reports & Metrics

Before using Google Analytics for this blog, I had only watched tutorials on how to use the tool and read over some of the free lessons Google provides on using its analytics tool online. I’ll be the first to admit that I had no idea what I was looking at during the first few times I attempted to review some of the reports and metrics. As I began to click through more and more of the reports, I also However, as time went on I slowly but surely began to put some (and still no where close to all) of the pieces together and finally understand how valuable the tool can be. Now, not only have I discovered how valuable Google Analytics can be for bloggers, but also how valuable it can be for marketers and companies in nearly any industry. Through custom reports and filters, Google Analytics allows you to track the data you want to track in order to reach the goals you set.

Although fully understanding how to utilize all or even most of the data available through Google Analytics would take a lot longer than the few weeks I have spent using the tool, I have already come across quite a few measurements and reports that I feel are valuable for a blog such as this one.

Google Analytics standard reports are broken into three sections; audience, acquisition, and behavior. According to Google Analytics online support, the Audience reports help to better understand who makes up your audience, how the audience is reaching your site and consuming your site’s content, and their level of loyalty and engagement (About the Audience reports, 2013). The Acquisition reports give insight on how you acquire users, how users behave on your after you acquire them, and user conversion patterns (Acquisition overview, 2013). And last but definitely not least, the Behavior reports can provide you with the necessary information you need to create effective content and improve your overall site in order to meet visitors’ expectations (About Behavior, 2013).

Here is an overview of some of the reports and metrics I have found to be the most helpful:

· Demographics/Interests: These reports can tell you a lot about who your visitors are. Demographics are broken down by age and gender and interests are broken down into affinity categories, in-market categories, and other categories. “This data is also available in custom reports, and you can use it as the basis for segmentation, which lets you evaluate how your users' behavior varies by demographics and interests; for example, do males interested in automobiles convert more frequently or read specific types of content more than females who are interested in athletic apparel” (Overview of Demographics & Interests reports, 2013).

· Mobile: The number of smartphone and tablet owners is continuing to grow and as technology continues to develop, consumers are becoming more and more comfortable with using their mobile devices to perform activities they may have previously only done on a desktop. According to Keizer (2013), in April of this year, “mobile browser usage—a combination of browsing from smartphones and tablets—surged by 1.4 percentage points to account for 13.2% of all unique visitors to the 40,000 websites that California-based Net Applications monitors for clients.” Analyzing the mobile traffic to your site can help you determine whether or not your site’s design should accommodate mobile devices. Navigating the desktop version of a website can easily become frustrating on a mobile device, which could result in mobile users having a high bounce rate because they quickly after discovering there is no mobile site or the mobile site has not been set-up for an optimal user experience.

· Channels: This a new acquisition report that allows me to view visitors’ Acquisition-Behavior-Conversion (ABC) cycle for each channel driving traffic to my site. GA provides all users with eight default channels which include direct, email, generic organic search, referral, generic paid search, social, and other (New Acquisitions Reporting, 2013). Not only will this data show me which channels are acquiring the most users, but more importantly, which channels are acquiring the most engaged users and which channels are acquiring the most users that result in a conversion (New Acquisition Reporting, 2013).

· Referrals: This report is important because it shows me the sites referring traffic to my site, the landing pages for each referring site, and the referred visitors interactions with my site. From this information I can determine which sites are sending me the most valuable and least valuable visitors, which may prompt me to build new marketing relationships and or strengthen existing relationships with the sites sending the most valuable visitors and cut off relationships that are continuously sending invaluable visitors.

· Keywords: This report is important because it allows you to see the words and terms people are searching for when they arrive on your website. Google Analytics breaks this report down between paid and organic. The report shows which keywords drive the most traffic to your site but also which one’s are most valuable by showing the average time spent on your site, the percentage of new visitors, and the bounce rate for each keyword. Additionally, the report allows you to see the most popular landing pages for each keyword. Knowing the keywords people use when coming to your site along with their engagement level can help you tailor your content to show up in a higher placement for organic searches. It can also help you tailor your paid search strategy in order to get the most out of your money. Additionally, knowing which keywords produce the most valuable visitors can help you generate content ideas in order to keep these users satisfied.

· Landing Pages: The landing pages analysis can be helpful for a variety of reasons but for bloggers, knowing the top pages visitors are entering your site on can help you to better understand the general topics and or information people seem to be most interested in. Additionally, according to the Google article, Analysis Techniques for Google Organic Search and SEO, “Landing pages are a good signal for analyzing organic search traffic because each landing page has likely been created around a focus keyword, product, or theme. As a result, incoming keyword searches generally relate to the focus of the page. You can see which organic searches on Google relate to which landing pages on your site.”

Comparing Google AdWords & Facebook Advertising

After viewing informative YouTube videos on Google Adwords and Facebook advertising, both seemed to offer users streamlined and easy-to-follow instructions on how to create a campaign. AdWords lays out how to get started on your first campaign in four steps: 1) Choose your budget; 2) Create your ads; 3) Select keywords; and 4) Enter your billing information (Getting Started with Google AdWords, 2009). Facebook lays out a very similar process where users begin with choosing a budget and continue creating the campaign from there. Both allow you to access your account at anytime as well as the ability to start or stop running an ad at any time. Also, AdWords and Facebook both use keyword bidding.

One main difference between the two was immediately evident was the way users are able to target their ads. Google AdWords allows users to target Google searches in order to reach audiences most relevant to their ads. AdWords also offers geographic targeting where you are able to target internationally, nationally, by region, state, city, etc. According to the YouTube video, Getting Started with Google AdWords, this can be as “specific as users searching for dog toys within 20 miles of San Francisco.” AdWords doesn’t use any Facebook user information to target ads.

On the other hand, Facebook only uses the information provided on Facebook user’s profiles. User location, demographics, likes and interests, education, work or workplace, and connections are used for Facebook ad targeting. Connections are broken down into three categories, which include: 1) Users already connected to your page, event, group, or application; 2) Users who are not already connected to your page, event, group, or application; and 3) Users whose friends are connected to your page, event, group, or application (Facebook Tutorials-How to Advertise on Facebook, 2010).

I personally prefer the ability to target by search with Google AdWords. Between the targeting capabilities offered by both tools, I feel like this is likely to be accurate form of targeting regarding relevancy. I also think AdWords allows for more specific targeting. Because of this I would most likely (but still depending in the audience, brand, and product/service/idea) use AdWords when there is a more specific target audience because the relevancy of the ads would help increase the likelihood of a click resulting in a sale.

Facebook ‘s targeting seems to be broader in terms of the ability to define a very specific target audience based on users recent inquiries outside of the Facebook network. Because the ads are targeted using information only provided from user profiles, it may be difficult to provide relevant information because there is no way to tell how long it has been since someone updated their profile information. Due to the lack of specific targeting compared to AdWords, I would use the Facebook advertising tool for targeting a broader audience and increasing brand awareness. If I was to use Facebook advertising to drive sales, I would only target current Facebook fans for my brand because they are already aware and engaged.

Without Conversation There Is No Social

To be completely honest, the debate regarding whether content or conversation is “king” of social marketing really got my head spinning. After reading Greenberg’s Content is King of Social Marketing, I was sold. It made complete sense that content would rule over conversation because you can’t have a conversation if there is no content to talk about. But after reading Novak’s Why Conversation, not Content, is King, my views began to change.

Content does not always result in conversation and I believe conversation is what drives social media. As Novak (2010) points out, “Content without conversation is just broadcasting, or just advertising.” If the content does not trigger a conversation, then where is the social aspect?

However, I still wasn’t completely convinced that conversation was “king” until I started looking at how social networking sites like Facebook work. If I post a status on my Facebook fan page, my status will pop up on the news feeds of all of my “followers”. For this example, lets say I have 100 “followers” on my Facebook fan page. Now, although my status offers valuable and relevant information, what happens if none of my followers are prompted to “like”, “share”, or comment on my status? The answer is that status goes no further than my 100 followers.

But, what if I wrote a status that was still relevant and informative (maybe even a little less informative) but was able to get just a couple “likes” and three comments all from different people? For this example we will assume each of these people has 100 friends because Facebook indicates that 100 is the median friend count on its social network (Backstrom, 2011). Now my status would appear on the newsfeeds of my 100 followers and on the newsfeeds of the” friends” of each person who interacted with my status (I’m referring to those who liked or commented on my status as “people” rather than my “followers” because as previously mentioned, once one of my followers has liked, shared, or commented on my status, that follower’s interaction with my status will show up on the newsfeeds of the follower’s friends. That follower’s friends can then like, share, or comment on my status even if they don’t follow me, ultimately exposing my status as well as my brand to even more people). This means my status could potentially reach 600 people just by receiving a couple “likes” and three comments.

I realize this number is probably a bit high since it is likely some of my followers would have mutual friends, but you get the point. Without conversation, my status only has the potential to reach my 100 followers. With conversation, that number grows with each like, share, or comment. Conversation wins again when I respond to the comments in a timely fashion, which could potentially, generate even more likes and more comments. In summary, one interaction with my status from one follower opens up potential interactions with that status to every person who is “friends” with that specific follower on Facebook.

Greenberg (2009) also suggests adding the development of your social content to your marketing calendar. But if you develop all of your content ahead of time, the information may not be as relevant by the time you go to post it. Plus, being social doesn’t always require a brand to spend hours thinking of what to say. Sometimes posting a relevant post in the spur of the moment can generate the best conversation. It doesn’t even necessarily have to be a full thought. For example, during the Super Bowl blackout this year, Oreo tweeted “You can still dunk in the dark.” The tweet resulted in 15,811 retweets and 2,200 new followers (Costa, 2013). The social media marketers for Oreo simply listened to what consumers were actively talking about and joined in the conversation.

Of course content is still important. However, I believe the content must be developed around the idea of creating good conversation or adding to conversations consumers are already having. If social content doesn’t generate some form of conversation, then what are really the odds of it being effective?

Exploring Bounce Rate & Exit Rate

My journey into the world of web analytics began with an overview of various metrics that can be used to help gage the success of a company’s digital marketing efforts.

Thus far, I have found Bounce Rate to be one of the most straightforward metrics while also providing an abundance of valuable information regarding engagement and customer behavior. One of the most notable professionals within the web analytics industry, Avinash Kaushik, refers to Bounce Rate as being “the sexiest web metric ever!” in his book Web Analytics 2.0.

In explaining the concept of Bounce Rate and why I feel it is a valuable metric, I think it is also important to understand the key differences between Bounce Rate and Exit Rate so that the two are not confused.

A Bounce Rate measures the percentage of visitors that enter and exit your site on the same page without clicking through to any other pages on your site. To give a more clear understanding, a “bounce” happens when someone clicks on a link to your site, does nothing, and then leaves from the same page.

An Exit Rate measures the percentage of visitors that left your site on a particular page based on how many views the page has. So, let’s say Joe performed an organic search on Google and clicks a link to a page on your website displaying a blog post. He then decides to click and view your About Us page, which is also where he exits your site. Joe has viewed more than one page on your site before exiting from the About Us page. But, if Joe had clicked on the link to your blog post from the organic search and then left without visiting another page, it would have been considered a bounce.

However, a problem with Exit Rates is that everyone who visits your site has to eventually leave at some point so this metric is usually broken down into “good” and “bad” exits.

While both metrics are important, I think Exit Rates are better for determining a potential leakage with a process. For example, if visitors are continuously exiting your site from a page that is meant to lead them to another, more important page, then the exit page may need to be revisited and edited.

One of the primary reasons I find Bounce Rate to be a bit more telling is because it is a better indicator of a sites success with engaging visitors as well as the quality of the traffic on a site.

Measuring the Bounce Rate for your site can help indicate your success with engaging visitors. The Bounce Rate should also be determined for individual site pages. Also according to Kaushik, “You'll understand better why your conversion rate is so low, if you have made changes over the last x amount of time then watching a trend of bounce rate is a sure way to know if the changes you are making are for the better.”

Measuring the Bounce Rate for your site’s top referrals can indicate where your high quality and low quality traffic is coming from. If a site is sending low quality traffic on a regular basis, the relationship with the site may need to be revisited.

It is also important to note that a high bounce rate may not always be a bad thing. For blog sites and other informational sources, visitors may find the information they are looking for from one page. In a situation like this, you can determine whether or not a high bounce rate is acceptable by analyzing the average time spent on a page with a high bounce rate.

Overall, taking steps to reduce your site's Bounce Rate, especially on the pages with the most traffic, will mean your visitors are more engaged with your site's content, which increasing the likelihood of conversion.

Measuring Online Social Presence & Social Media ROI

One of the first topics discussed in IMC 642: Web Metric & SEO was how web analytics could help a business measure the impact of its online social presence. Social media has become a primary tool for businesses in developing relationships with consumers online while further promoting its products, services, and/or ideas as part of an overall digital marketing strategy. However, measuring the effectiveness of a company’s online social efforts can often produce more qualitative data rather than quantitative, which can seem a bit sketchy for people outside of the marketing industry that are more comfortable using concrete numbers to determine an ROI.

However, regardless of the lack of quantitative data or how difficult it may be to measure to social media ROI, businesses are now more than ever beginning to understand that they cannot afford to ignore social media any longer. The results from The CMO Survey conducted in February of 2012 shows that businesses are continuing to increase their spending for social media. According to the survey, “In the next 5 years, marketers expect to spend 19.5% of their budgets on social media, almost three times more than the current level” (Moorman, 2012).

Analyzing Website Traffic

If one goal for your social media efforts is to drive traffic to your online website, you can measure the success rate of this goal by analyzing your website’s traffic. But, this still may not give you the true cost of the traffic. In order to get an even better understanding of what the true cost of this traffic may be, John Souza from Fast Company suggests comparing your website’s analytics with other online efforts such as PPC campaigns or pay per click. “If you utilize pay-per-click strategies to drive traffic, look at the average cost of those PPC campaigns per person then analyze that cost against how many visitors you get from free social media placements. You can then put a dollar sign on the traffic you derive from Facebook pages, Twitter links and the like” (Souza, 2012).

Conversions

Although noticeably and continuously pushing products on social media is likely to end up doing more harm than good by annoying your audience, you may still be able track sales from customers who first visited your page by clicking on a social media link or by visiting your company’s “fan” page. Google Analytics and other similar web analytics tools can follow the visitors originally referred to your site from social media and track any conversions over a specific period of time (Chitwood, 2013).

Engagement

Measuring engagement for your social media sites can also be very beneficial. Analyzing your accounts and recording the number of “likes”, “shares”, and “comments” posts generates is always helpful. Also, monitoring changes in the number of “fans” or “follower” is important. However, you can measure the average engagement rate by comparing your posts’ engagement with your overall “fan” or “follower” base (Chitwood, 2013).
