DATE CHANGES DUE TO SNOW: Walk-A-Thon is Monday-Wednesday, March 10-12. The Tropical Day is changed to Tuesday, March 11. PTF will be rescheduled.

Parents and students,

Here are some upcoming events and important announcements for your attention.

Tired of the snow? Let’s go to the Tropics! Tuesday, March 4, will be Tropical Day for everyone. Wear a Hawaiian shirt or a colorful and springy polo (no t-shirts), with regular school pants or skirts. Summer hats and sunglasses may be worn.

There will be a Parent-Teacher Fellowship (PTF) Meeting on Tuesday, March 4 at 7:00 pm. We will also be having an American Christian Honor Society Induction Ceremony for the high school at the meeting.

There will be a meeting for all students and their parents who are interested in playing baseball this spring on Tuesday at 6:30 pm in the gym (before the PTF meeting) with Brian Newhouse. We need to discuss if we will have enough interest and players to form a team. It is imperative for you to be there if you want to be a part of the baseball team.

Walk-A-Thon is next week!Get your walking shoes ready and support EVCS as we get ready for our biggest fundraiser of the year!

We need volunteers to help count laps. If you can help, please contact Amy French or Carol Ising in the school office.

Parents are welcome to come and encourage students during the Walk-A-Thon. Parents may walk with their child. Any student who has been warned for running more than once is disqualified from receiving an award for his or her grade.

Each class is responsible for providing nutritious snacks and drinks for the students after the scheduled walking time. Please check with your child’s teacher or homeroom parent as to what to send for the class. If a student is walking on a make-up day, they are responsible for bringing their own snack and drink.

Students may change into sweatpants or KNEE-LENGTH shorts for the Walk-A-Thon (not requird to change). However, if they do not meet the requirements, they may be required to change back into their regular school dress to walk. Don’t forget your “walking” shoes!

Every student is participating in the Walk-A-Thon by walking with their class at the scheduled time. Students will have 15 minutes after walking has ended to have refreshments, change, and return to class.

Secondary (grades 6 through 12) will have break in their homeroom during the Walk-A-Thon. Do not block the walkers when changing classes or at break.

Dear Parents:

We are writing to update you on a few items. First, we want to take this opportunity to discuss our decision not to follow Kanawha County schools during the recent water and extreme temperature situations. The school does follow the county’s lead when it comes to ice and snow; however, these circumstances went beyond ice and snow. During the water crisis our Principal, Jack Suttle, spoke to the Kanawha County Health Department and we were informed that if the school could develop an alternative plan that was approved by the health department inspector, then we could re-open school. The plan was developed and approved by the county, and we were able to have school several days earlier than our county school system. The next extended school outage for the county was the direct result of sub-zero temperatures. The county was required to remain closed due to the number of children that must wait outside for the bus to pick them up. Since EVCS does not run a bus and has no children that must wait in the cold, the administration decided to continue with school and offer delays when warranted. We encourage each of you to watch the school’s Facebook page for updates or wait for your 411 information call from the school.

The second item we would like to address is our Walk-A-Thon. This is by far the largest fund raiser for our school and participation is required. These funds are added to the general budget of the school in an effort to keep tuition at a reasonable rate. Several years ago, we had some parents that wanted to pay a fee instead of participating so we came up with a $300 fee that could be paid in lieu of participating in the Walk-A-Thon. The requirement to participate is spelled out in the parent agreement that is signed upon enrollment. Again, these funds are not extra funds for the school; it only assists with our general budget.

Finally, we want to praise God for the blessings he has sent our way this year. Our enrollment for the second semester has grown to 175! The growth has been phenomenal and we want to thank the efforts of our Principal and many of the parents for assisting with this growth. We also want to praise our Principal for the smooth transition. His outstanding leadership and positive spirit have definitely made a difference in our student body. We appreciate the trust you have placed in the school as we make your child’s Christian education a top priority.

Sincerely Yours,
Elk Valley School Board
