The bridge was destroyed by a drunk Finn and repair has been expensive and difficult. This is a very concrete example of bridging but a nice one since it reminds us of the importance of bridging: we bridge to bring together, to fill gaps, to connect… when bridges work we experience, how they support us in passing through the landscape. When bridges break we notice boundaries and break downs and connections become difficult. My research is all about bridging: bridging across people and technology, users and designers, present and future. Boundaries are core units of analysis and sites for learning.

Colleague Kinley fra eLL in Aalborg has presented our joint paper. Presentation went very well, and the topic fits nicely into the session we were in. Two other presentations also dealt with the question of how to train teaching staff to use ICT in their teaching. Interesting work is done at Drexel University in the US, where a peer-mentoring approach is being used.

A...

Awareness Workshop on ICT in teaching and learning at SCE

A workshop was planned for teaching staff at Samtse College of Edcuation during the field trip. It was decided to try out the CoED-tool to structure work in groups.

Objectives of the workshops were:

To introduce to critical issues in relation to ICT in teaching practices

To illustrate the importance of clarifying your core values in teaching as part of your learning design

To create awareness about ways of re-thinking pedagogy

To introduce and try a method for creating learning designs with ICT

To take first steps in what we hope can be a longer collaboration

A set of handouts was produced to support the groupwork. The handouts contained number of with ‘critical questions’ and memory points from the initial presentation, and helped the participants focus on the same issues throughout the group work.

The concept of learning design is very novel in the Bhutanese context where the educational sector has a very strong tradition of 'curriculum design’ and - when media or ICT is involved - 'instructional design’. In both traditions, the teacher is not involved in the proces of developing the form and content of the teaching. This is done by socalled experts on either the domain or on pedagogical issues, and the teacher then gets the role of delivering the message.
The workshop was aimed at creating awareness on the possibilities for lecturers when engaging in the proces of learning design.

As part of eLL’s collaboration and joint research project with Royal University of Bhutan (IIC), I went to Bhutan for two weeks to interact with our collaborating partners there.
Hosts for the visist was Samtse College of Edcuation where our partners work. The trip had several purposes:

To discuss status of our joint resarch project and make plans for next period

To visit other colleges and collect to gain knowledge about state of the art in relation to use of ICT in teaching and learning

To create awareness about the project and use of ICT in teaching in general at Samtse College of Education

To collect data for the project

To have meetings with representatives of Royal University of Bhutan to discuss the project and the framework for collaboration

In September, PhD-student Farzana Akther and I had a conference paper published at the Development Informatics Conference IDIA 2012 in (held in Istanbul). The paper has the title “The roles of intermediation and knowlede creation in community development in rural Bangladesh: ICT as a tool rather than a goal in access to information”.

The paper presents an analysis of some of Farzana’s data from field work in Bangladesh.

From August 1st, I have taken up a position as elearning specialist at VIA University College in Aarhus. I am placed in the School of Continuing Education, and also affiliated with VIA’s research center on eLearning and media. I stay in touch with the ICT4Development group in eLearning Lab at Aalborg University, and hopefully the future will bring continued collaboration with my good colleagues from the ICT and learning environment as well.

My tumblr has been silent for some time. I have decided to use it the same way as before - to indiciate my whereabouts in relation to research and development work I am engaged in. My post will describe what I have been doing and will be doing in terms of visits, data gathering, presentations, writings/publication, meetings with research fellows/colleagues around the world, etc. The primary idea is (perhaps best done in retrospect, though) to keep track of my movements in order to find focus in my research work, and secondly to share experiences and ressources with interested followers.

Organisational change and sustainable networked learning: Design...

Organisational change and sustainable networked learning: Design is not enough.

Seminar with John Hannon, visting scholar in eLearning Lab this spring. This was a very stimulating lunch session - John talked about his work at La Trobe University in Melbourne, where he and colleagues work with finding sustainable ways to change educational practices.

John Hannon talked about a change from thinking about design towards thinking about assembly - connecting policy and practice is a fast way of expressing it. Rather than making grand schemes and plans, focusing on how to enact what you want to happen here and now seems to be a way of doing bottom up-changes.

Read more about John’s work here: http://www.ell.aau.dk/2012/05/03/dr-john-hannon/

Find more info about the seminar here, and find slides from John Hannon’s talk here.

An interesting day spent with great people from the field of Learning Design, Grainne Conole from Leicester University, UK; Yishay Mor, Open University, UK; and Thomas Ryberg from eLearning Lab, Aalborg University.

Talks, hands on, workshop, design activities - all about learning design, tools to support it, ways of facilitating it, etc. Together with colleagues PO Zander and Md. Saifuddin Khalid, we managed to do a little work on our ePolicyInPractice case :-)

Links to Grainne’s talk “The 7 C’s of Learning Design” can be found here: http://e4innovation.com/?p=576

To serve as a forum for our ongoing research on the topic, we have formed a research group on ICT for Development. Formally, the group is a subgroup within eLearning Lab; however, we also have a number of ‘alumni members’, namely former colleagues in eLL whom we still collaborate with. We have a presentation website here.

Currently, our main activity in the group is writing a book on the topic of ICT for Development within education and learning. A call for chapters has been put together, as we would like to invite others to contribute - please get in touch, if you have relevant research to present.

Study trip to Bangladesh with students from Human Centered Informatics

Went to Bangladesh with 13 students from 6th Semester, Human Centered Informatics. The topic of the trip was ICT for Development, and the students were busy visiting IT-companies; telecentres; traning facilities for learning ICT-use; Dhaka University; Asian University for Women, etc.

Also meeting with people in Bangladesh was a very important part of the trip, and thanks to our good friends at Dhaka University, there was quite a lot of interaction between Danish and Bangladeshi students.

During a trip to YPSA (Young People in Social Action), Pär-Ola and myself were interviewed for the local community radio, and the students sang our national anthemn and gave an interview as well. Great fun, and brilliant work by our friend, Vashkar, who despite his visual handicap (he is totally blind) makes some very impressive in YPSA.

Also, see Pär-Ola’s post on the eLL website about the trip here…

Shipbreaking is a big industry in Bangladesh. This was my first chance to visit one of the many socalled shipbreaking yards in the Chittagong area and see for myself how the work is done. Like many other industries in Bangladesh, this work is heavily dependent on the hard labour of people.

Lower picture is from the Gulshan area in Dhaka, where we went to visit an IT company owned by two Danes. Taking a short walk in the local neighbourhood, the contrasts of Bangladesh become apparent once again.

The theme of the conference is Literacy, Education and Development (see the call for papers here). I have been invited to give a speech on e-literacy, which will take place tomorrow. I will mainly focus on ways of working with e-literacy in teaching and learning, or - in other words - what is it and how can you learn it?

And today I also learned the literal meaning of the word Harmattan, which is the Northeast trade wind which comes in the dry season. And in these parts, dry means dust…!

A recent report from Key points of the report include:

The current delivery of computing education in many UK schools is highly unsatisfactory

Many pupils gain nothing beyond basic digital literacy skills such as word-processing or using a database

Not unlike the Dansih EVA-report from 2009, a lack of qualifications in the teaching staff is part of the problem. In Denmark, the current discussion on this issues often addresses the need for more contextualised development of teachers’ competencies.

An innovative, exploratory workshop, intended to cover not only empirical and theoretical issues but also software and tools. There are three thematic strands into which short papers have been submitted :

Theoretical Frameworks

Tools and Resources

Practices & Methods

The short paper we are presenting is based on an introduction to CoED - the Collaborative E-Learning method developed at e-Learning Lab (eLL).

The problem and the pattern which connects

Design problems are wicked because their solution exceeds what is ready to hand - on the other hand solutions are confined by the horizon of imagination of those who has the problem, and this horizon we may assume is framed by what they see as a solution space, and working rules for acting within this space - hence to reformulate a wicked problem we must exspand the imagination's solution space and rules of manipulation.

After Luhmann

He is right, Luhmann: systems do not understand each other, they disturb, they mingle, and then maybe they change - but although informative for a social scientist, this position is not very helpfull to a designer - we must be concerned with what understanding - despite all disturbance - can run from a user to a producer and back, because the flow between producers, retail/politics, and users is the flow that eventually inform our choices and make things end up the way they do, in the market place or as an application on my desktop. So - designers can not stop at sense making as phenomenologists would recommend - we need to invent pattern languages which against all odds can generate communication between users and designers, between designers and engineers, between designers, engineers and customers. To say that communication in this chain is impossible is to say design is impossible.

and ….. phenomenology

“Where were you then”? “What does your stomach tell you”? are common questions when journalists interview people involved in dramatic events. A search for embodied localized knowledge, it seems. The idea of common knowledge is under pressure, however, at the expense of the idea that experience is all we have. Locations do, however, not speak up themselves, neither do bodies. Humans make locations and bodies speak. Humans interpret experiences in language. Humans communicate. And as soon as we speak, we generate more speak. Language is the currency by which we exchange experience, and hermeneutics is the way we evaluate the exchange.

Phenomenology is a name for the acceptance of knowledge originating from experience, from being-in-the-world, but without language and without interpretation, sharing is impossible, and without evaluation through interpretation knowledge is impossible.

Hence, in case we want to evaluate a learning environment of some sort, let us begin by asking (1) Does this learning space allow participants’ experience to be spoken of? (2) Do participants share a language in which to exchange experiences? (3) Do participants share rules by which to commonly discuss and evaluate the exchange?

Hermeneutics - HELP

Maybe it is the vacation - it certainly can't be the hot summerweather - anyways, I have got this void feeling about my research: what do I really know, what is the firm ground when researching Information Architecture and Information Ecology? I keep coming back to hermeneutics and to embodied cognitive semantics and to space as a phenomenon in a phenomenological sense - but I wonder if that can lead to improvements in design, still I keep trying to find my way

The conference brings together many different nations to present and have interesting dialogs around e-learning and the approach and usage of pedagogy, activities and tool within the area of e-learning.

Until now I have heard many interesting presentations - both had Moodle presented as “A wiki”, how Facebook is used to disrupt and question teaching, and the use of blogs in distance learning courses with high number of students…. really interesting dialogs came from this…

- a challenge will be my own presentation - not as to presenting but I have (only) 10 minuts to present ‘my ph.d. work’ so far… - and what to focus on????
I have presented many interesting things in the paper as I have tried to present research from the work done on my ph.d. and related projects contributing to my ph.d. - Web 2.0 in relation to PBL, The AAU PBL model, CoED as a design method - all of this as representing my approach to do a design workshop… - so many interesting aspects and processes to focus on for 10 minuts… really a challenge…

SUMMER IN MAINE

Memorial day is tomorrow and my present voluntary exile – a guesthouse on campus at the University of Maine – is getting into summer. The sky is grey on the framed picture in our sitting room entitled ‘Summer in Maine’: A moose in a wide green meadow with lupines, a blueberry meadow, a small stream meandering, mountains as backdrop. A perfect match to the grey outside, infinite nuances of grey, which you learn to appreciate, since the costal climate sends showers persistently, day and night. Grey is also the news I just read on the Danish news site I follow, about billions of money to be saved by digitizing the forms, which travel between public administration and citizens in need of a passport, a building-a-carport-permit, or a maternity-leave-compensation-application. Dull as it may seem, each little transaction of data-translation in these departments requires transformation, a transformation with political, social and semiotic implications: read Spinuzzi’s ‘Tracing genres through organizations’, or read some of the publications from our just recently concluded research on how to employ interactive technologies (e.g. social media, web 2.0, pervasive and mobile technologies) eGov+ (http://www.egovplus.dk/index.php?id=2234) in the communication between government and citizens. There is no such thing as a transformation free travel of data from one information ecology to the next.
Still, while the moose keeps chewing grass in the meadows of Maine, I keep writing about ‘Information ecology and design of information systems’. The moose and I carry on, just as well, while politicians yell out their blue-sky visions, and maybe get elected for another term.

There were many different approaches to the term literacy, which was leading to an interesting dialog about the use of the term “Literacy” and “Digital literacy”.

The projects presented during the conference had interesting research results and methods illustrated in their presentations. The conference gave me an introduction to the kind of research going on in UK on Digital Literacy.

Bernhard Dusch from Cambridge University gave a presentation about their development of a design tool kit trying to challange product developers in their brainstoming about new product and to make them think about sustainablility. The tool kit they developed is illustrated on the powerpoint (in the picture), but there are a hole process of reflection build into the workshop. Very interesting… - and it gave me some ideas about elaborating the CoED or maybe come up with a supplement to CoED due to my PhD. One thing though - they were facing some of the same challenges as with CoED - not knowing if the thinking and ideas started at the workshop actually are used and further developed after the workshop…

Change happens - understanding is hard work

"You can only understand life backwards, but we must live it forwards." - This famous Kierkegaard quote runs contrary to the innovation rhetoric which sees innovation as progress while truth is that innovation is our effort to keep up with change in the environment without changing ourselves. Trying to understand backwards is about finding patterns, finding the breadcrumbs I dropped on my way out, it is about coming home, about having changed and discover it.

Like this blog has been sleeping since October, so have I it feels, at least, but now this old grizzlebear smells spring and crowl out of its winter dwelling, sniffing and coughing and starving. Back to the old routines of outdoor life - back to life, that is. "Write about us in your blog", one of the students said the other day. Well, ok then: Apart from repeating Steve Job's advice; stay hungry, stay foolish what is there to say but: we are working on it, "it" meaning the training in communicating about human information behavior: how we recognize a piece of information, how we search it out, and how we move it into our repertoire of things that helps us survive in a cruel world. We play the role of a clever project manager, and try to figure out how to communicate with users and customers, how to communicate with programmers, and how to make sure that for each project, the team members refelct on successes and failures and update their personal resume accordingly.

From 'tacit' to 'story'

During the seminar we found that the first translation 'from tacit to story' worked well, letting tangibles and storytelling mutually support and enforce each other, so that understanding information ecology becomes easier, once you combine storytelling, theater, and working with tangibles. Unfortunately we did not have time to explore going 'from story to form'. The translation of stories into knowledge organization will take place in the virtual learning environment. Card (image and/or words) sorting activities are a challenge when people sit remotely and work. Another point from the seminar was that postponing 'vision' to the end made the outcomes much clearer, than in other cases, where we started with the vision part.

Transformative translation through tangibles

I am teaching information ecology this week. I suggest to the students to take a 'discovery-route' running from 1. discovering knowledge organization to 2. discovering information foraging to 3. discovering information ecologies to 4. discovering design to 5. discovering visions, to ... wherever they as Information Architects want to go. Each 'to' represents a journey and a transformative translation - which is what I call 'discovery'. You can not arrive at the concept of 'information ecology' unless you have discovered the concept of 'knowledge organization', and so on and so forth. I find vision-design-information ecology-information foraging-knowledge organization mutually inclusive: without the one you can not understand the others. All these concepts are elusive, hence, we must make them tangible, to use them as 'hangers' for stories, metaphors and images - the works of transformative translations. Taking the discovery route implies communicating images, words on cards, drawings, and theater.
Thanks to my eLL www.ell.aau.dk/ colleague Thomas Ryberg http://twitter.com/tryberg who alerted me to the concept of permaculture, we will also explore this design method.

Luckily, I do not start teaching until mid-October, so I now have some time to collect my thoughts and make preparations. Aside from teaching, one of my tasks is now to carry out and write about my study for this year’s Internet Research conference (see previous post). I am planning to focus especially on the methodological issues mentioned in end of the abstract, as this is something that I have been thinking about – in a more general way – lately.

During my time off, I have been pondering about my own place in the research landscape – which field should I primarily speak and refer to, what do I take with me from my background in literary studies, what does it mean to me to be a humanist scholar in an emergent, cross-disciplinary research environment? These are questions that I want to write about and hopefully discuss in the coming months.

The thesis is entitled “Youth and Online Social Networking: A Nexus Analytic Study of Mediated Actions and Public Discourses” and is 388 pages long.

For several practical reasons, the thesis is (regretfully) written in Danish, but here is a short English summary:

The present PhD thesis investigates Danish children and young people’s use of a relatively recent web-phenomenon: Online social networking. The so-called social network sites (SNSs) are internet based social spaces where users via personalised profiles can list each other as friends and communicate and socialise across time and space. The main purpose of the thesis is to gain an understanding of the meanings SNSs, such as Arto and Facebook, have for young people’s individual and social lives and how they use them as part of everyday life. In order to investigate this, the thesis takes its analytic departure in an extensive amount of various empirical data. The primary data consist of five years of ethnographic engagement (including participatory observation within the field) and a large-scale qualitative questionnaire aimed at investigating the experiences that 12-18 years old Danes have on social network sites. In this way, the thesis encompasses both the level of social actors and the level of discourse. It explores and analyses the central actions young people carry out across social network sites, as well as the ways in which they discursively construct and articulate their concrete use and experiences.

Theoretically, the thesis is situated within the field of discourse studies with Nexus Analysis as its primary theoretical and methodological approach. Nexus analysis distinguishes itself from other discourse analytic approaches by focusing on central mediated actions carried out by social actors within a loosely tied ‘nexus of practice’ (rather than focusing solely on discourse). The term nexus of practice refers to the social field where humans, discourses and cultural artefacts intersect and result in social action. In the thesis, young people’s use of social network sites are analysed as a nexus of practice with the purpose of identifying the most prominent and central mediated actions and cycles of discourses. A nexus analysis is carried out through three phases: engaging, navigating and changing the nexus of practice. The primary activities in the engagement phase consist of ethnographic engagement, collection of a wide variety of data and the researcher’s establishment of a ‘zone of identification’. The main activities of the navigation phase are to organise, document and analyse the various data collected, whereas the changing phase consists of reflections on how the results of the nexus analysis affect or contribute to changes within the overall nexus of practice.

Grounded in the detailed engagement in the first phase of the nexus analysis, the thesis’ navigation phase has been structured around three analytic themes which represent the most central cycles of discourses within the nexus of practice. Practising friendship is an essential part of Danish young people’s use of social network sites. In the first analytic theme, the central (and often completely routinised) mediated actions the users carry out to create or maintain social relations are analysed. In relation to this, it is discussed what characterises a friendship online and how young people’s use of SNSs are contributing to a transformation of the traditional notion of friendship. In the second theme of the analysis, a quite specific mode of communication is examined. This mode of communication is characterised by a particular love discourse that exists among best friends on SNSs, where statements such as ‘I love you’ appear frequently in their interactions. The different functions of this emotional communication are discussed, as are the meanings of why these statements are often publically available, or even strategically, intentionally placed on the young people’s profiles. In relation to this, it is argued that the users – through these emotional communicative actions – become co-constructors of each other’s identities, which reflects or can be characterised as an ‘open source’ networked identity. In the final analytic theme, it is analysed and discussed how young people cope with and handle unpleasant experiences which arise from time to time when they use social network sites. This discussion is grounded in how the young users themselves experience, articulate and account for risks related to their use of SNSs and it examines their strategies to navigate and handle the unpleasant experiences. The analysis shows how young people experience a tension or contradiction between their own concrete, local experiences and the public discourses which surround their use of new media. Following from this, it is argued that young people have a need for their local (and most often positive) experiences to be acknowledged and taken serious. This need has been particularly clear in a period of time where social network sites were a new phenomenon (mostly used among young people), and where the public debate primarily focused on dangers and risks.

Finally, the relations between mediated actions and public discourses are treated at a more overarching and general level. As part of the changing phase within the nexus analysis it is discussed how the thesis and public dissemination of empirically grounded research contribute to the public debate and can create a better and more nuanced understanding of Danish youngsters’ use of social network sites.

The thesis was handed in just in time (since I am seven months pregnant) and I look forward to not spending every day, night and weekend at the university. Thanks for support and encouragement through My PhD Blog during the past years :-)

said Aron Sloman to me in 1987, when I visited Cognitive Studies Unit at University of Sussex as a PhD student, and asked him for advice on how to find my way as a researcher in between AI and the late Wittgenstein and Chris Freeman and the other scholars, whose work I was introduced to at Arbetslivscentrum in Stockholm. His advice has stayed with me: It helps me remember why I went into academia in the first place: pure selfish joy of being close to reason. In these early days of preparation for the autumn semester, where all the day-to-day business of administration is dimmed, we come close, in reading, in discussing over lunch, in having time to listen to each others ideas and arguments. Nice.

I am half way through Latour's 'Reassembling the social', motivated by Mette Eriksen, who told me that Latour's way of seeing if and how things ask other intermediaries to become actors by asking them to do stuff is fruitfull in design. A different take than that of affordances and that of Krippendorf. I am still waiting for the clue, but I feel that my reading makes me appreciate my habit of listening to the voices of things, cultivated throughout childhood, and initially inspired by H.C. Andersen's fairytales.

Surprisingly the field is broad and there are a lot of different views on the definition of persuasion and persuasive technology. There were interesting presentations, e.g. openess to a constructivist view on learning, risk of reactance, persuasion profiles. The conference takes place at the Danish Royal Library, the Black Diamond, in Copenhagen.

In October, I am planning to go Internet Research 11.0 – Sustainability, Participation, Action as part of a panel on mutual surveillance in social media. My contribution to the ongoing academic debate about issues of privacy, surveillance and identity (particularly on Facebook) is anticipated in the following abstract:

“When Avatars Go On Facebook”

In this paper, I explore what happens when virtual communities expand their avatar-based internal relations to the context of the online social networking of Facebook. This is based on an empirical study of two different online communities in which members have expanded, or in some cases, moved their relationships from being relatively anonymous in the context of the community to presenting more of their offline lives in the context of Facebook.

I focus specifically on the communicative strategies which members of these communities employ in order to distinguish between both online and offline selves and between their avatar/alter ego in the community and the offline person they present themselves as on Facebook. How does the communication between members as well as the communication of personal identity differ in these two contexts, and how are the boundaries of informativity managed?

The broader discussion that this study leads to involve questions such as: What does “private identity” mean in the context of the various possibilities of self-representation on the web? And what consequences does this have for the researcher as a participant observer who must respect the anonymity of her object of study?

I am really looking forward to participating in my fourth Internet Research conference. It is usually a vibrant, relaxed and inspiring experience, and I learn something new every time.

At the Department of Communication here at Aalborg University we have a doctoral program in Human Centered Communication and Informatics (HCCI) which each Wednesday hosts informal lunch seminars where PhD students can discuss ongoing research, present paper or dissertation drafts etc. Today me and guest from Aarhus School of Business, Annette Agerdal-Hjermind, each gave a presentation under the headline ‘Making a Mess with Situational Analysis’. Annette and I are both using Situational Analysis (Clarke, 2005) in our PhD projects and we wanted to exchange experiences and receive feedback from colleagues.

Annette is working with blogging in an organisational context and gave an interesting presentation on her case, data and how she is planning to use Clarke’s situational maps when coding, mapping and categorising her data. You can learn more from her PhD blog.

The situational maps are exactly the parts of Clarke’s framework I have integrated in my PhD project. Here, I am using Scollon & Scollon’s (2004) Nexus Analysis as a methodological and theoretical framework. As a first step in a Nexus Analysis the Scollons suggest that you make broad-stroke maps of your field and the many discourse cycles that are circulating through the moment of social action you are studying. I think Clarke’s maps are useful tools when engaging in such a task, since the point is to map out “the complex situations of inquiry broadly conceived” (Clarke & Friese, 2007, p. 366). Both Clarke and the Scollons believe that ‘context’ should be understood and treated as something that exists within the siuation of inquiry (and not as mere background). Therefore, I think the two frameworks go well together and the combination has worked for me when trying to sketch out maps of young people’s use of social network sites in Denmark.

Doing it again, and again, and again is a precondition to become skilled. How to redefine repetition, from boredom to inspiring garage-time? I talked to a martial arts instructor yesterday. He told me that his students have to obey three rules to study under his guidance: 1. Never say "I can't", 2. No excuses for failure, 3. Eat the shit.

Simple, but not easy. I'd like to add a 4th: Time, task, and territory, the good old tavistock insight. It is a tremendous relief to know where to do what when, including where, and when to apply rule 1,2,3.

I am debugging the food quiz written in python for the maXi conference tomorrow. I struggled e.g. with why 2>=12 & 2<=12 is true. Orinally, I wanted to translate the game into Danish only. But the shift from the use of bread units (used in Germany) to gram of carbohydrates (used in Denmark) caused some problems. But I solved it and hope that the main bugs are fixed now.

FORM

This spring I have taught a course 'Design, Use and Meaning' where we have tried to update the Scandinavian tradition for participatory design with a semantic turn a la Krippendorf. We were grabbling with ideas, but it was like we hit a 'what is it that we are talking about, really' glass ceiling. My idea was and still is that we have to develop a product semantics for ICT applications. It must be domain- and setting specific, because what we need the semantics for is the communication with users - the 80% of design sense making, while the designers can add their ideas and knowledge about technical constraints for the other 20%. At first we worked through the Scandinavian tradition of involving users. Then we analyzed the history of the pneumatic tube, the logbook, the calendar - all interesting stuff, but we got kind of stuck - we lost the nerve to explore further. When I talked to Anne Marie Kanstrup about this, she said: It is because coming from participatory design, we do not know how to focus on form, we focus on use situations. So here is the challenge to participatory design: to develop a sense for form without loosing the capacity for situation.

We are eight PhD students with very different academic backgrounds competing to be ‘Research Communicator of the Year’.
Local R&D

These days I am excited by finding ways of improving local research and development - which I take as another word for userdriven innovation - how to take that local creativity to other nodes in the network, and grow and come back. I know one example - the idea of quality circles which traveled from the UK to Norway, to Japan and to Europe - bu that is in a way a sad story, because it lost it's situatednes along the way. Will a statement like 'Humans first' help people to remember that such practices die if cut off from the lokal working culture?

CAN WE SEE LEARNING - AND CAN WE MANAGE IT?

If the mind works like a mechanical system, following laws similar those according to which rockets and billard balls move - then yes. But if the mind works as systems of living communication - then we are limited to interpretations of behavior. A wealth of theories mushroom around this interpretation. And if you are an action researcher like myself, you also need methods for collecting data and for relating them to theory and go back and forth between theory and practice, if you want to build a strategy for managing learning. This week I will work on creating networks around action research in learning which involves ICT.

The project involves broadcasting short university lectures on daytime TV on the national channel DR2.

DR is inspired by for instance BBC’s The Open University or Ted.com and has created a website where all lectures can be viewed and discussed.

I have been involved in filming two 20-25 minutes lectures which were broadcast a couple of days ago. In both of the lectures I talk about social network sites and my own research on youth and new media. In the first lecture I focus mainly on defining SNS and in the second I highlight central concepts and research results explaining the popularity of the phenomenon. Both lectures can be viewed here (they are in Danish, though).

I like the idea of communicating research results in this manner (it’s nice with more than 20 seconds of airtime) and I plan to record more talks when I have handed in the dissertation.

SPRING TERM 2010 Product semantics of ICT for development

The graduate course 'Design -use and meaning' I teach this term is a continuation of the Design course last Autumn where we worked with designer-identity and basic design skills. Product semantics is the link, and Krippendorf's work is the backbone here, although it does not cover participatory design. Nor does it address eLearning Lab's research on ICT for development - so luckily, there is room for improvement, and lots of research work to do

For us it’s important to have privacy online to protect ourselves from people we don’t know. […] We want it to be easy and simple for us to change our personal settings when it is needed. In general it is hard to find out how to protect ourselves the best. We want to be the boss of who can see our profile.”

I think that privacy is going to be a big issue among youth – especially, now that they have to “share” social network sites such as Facebook with their parents.

DESIGN TOOL APPROPRIATION

The Mobile Design Lab is part of e-Learning Lab, and it needs a make-over. This is high on my agenda this week. I plan to pack each element together with a brief description of its design-tool-potential. I consider the Mobile Design Lab a box for tools dedicated provocation, articulation and communication of conceptual ideas: we have tools for building personas, for building scenarios, and for forum theater. And we have games, designed by students over the years. All by inspiration from ITProduct design at the Mads Clausen Institute in Sonderborg, and further developed in the design workshops held by Anne Marie Kanstrup and I together with students.

A NEW BEGINNING

What should happen in Lavendergarage in 2010 - stupid question since the future approaches us from behind. But what if I turn around, and face the past, can I know, then? Information Architecture as the underlying, invisible structure of information, of difference, how long can I drawn lines back? Together with students I'll be looking at log-book traditions, calendar traditions and air tube system traditions to identify patterns of interaction, and patterns of underlying information structures, this way hoping to inform the information architecture of a project team collaboration system the students are going to build a concept for. We will look for what users can do, which activities are mediated, and which role is assigned to the user - and I so look forward to this. This work will, maybe, lead me on to a fruitfull understanding of the Erwoll system in police investigation, a piece of work I have left for some years, and which I want to re-assume.
