“What do you think it’s been, five or six years since you’ve been home for more than a week in a row?”

Brad nodded slowly. “Yeah, something like that.”

“It’s like the good old days.”

He shrugged, pushing off the wall, moving her way. “Sort of.”

Molly winced, foolishly forgetting that life for Brad was currently unrecognizable. “I guess that was pretty dumb of me to say.”

“No, I just meant Nate isn’t here hanging out in his boxers, and I haven’t done this yet.”

She frowned. “What?”

“Dunked you,” he said as he pressed his hand on top of her head and sent her under.

She sank beneath the watery depths, slapping at his hand and arm as he kept her submerged for a good three or four seconds. She came up sputtering and glaring. “You idiot.” She coughed again. “Are you trying to drown me?”

He dismissed her with a chuckle and flippant raise of his brow. “So dramatic. We had about three minutes before we needed to start worrying about brain damage.”

Her eyes narrowed again. “Oh, you’re dead,” she said, gritting her teeth, charging after him.

He laughed, swimming away.

But they were well-matched, both of them excellent swimmers. All the Sanderson and Carter kids had had numerous lessons in their younger days due to their proximity to the Atlantic.

She hooked her arm around his neck, maneuvered her way onto his back, and sent them both underwater, her legs locking around his waist to keep her leverage. But his sheer size and strength were her disadvantage.

Then they both surfaced for air, Brad laughing before she brought him under again. Within seconds, he had their positions reversed, and he held her against him, one arm wrapped around the front of her waist, the other around her shoulders as they came up for another draw of air.

His breath puffed against her neck in hot torrents as their legs brushed with their kicks to stay afloat, while he let her waist go and used his arm to tread water. “Molls, this is quite a predicament.

He wasn’t kidding. She was pinned beneath his strong arm, and her back was pressed against his solid chest, with no choice but to grip his muscular forearm caging her in place. “Fine. You win.” She just needed him to let her go.

“That’s it? Since when do you give up so easy?”

Since he’d kissed her brainless and taken her to bed. “Since I realized it’s time to get home and get changed for your party at Nate and Callie’s.” She tried to move away from him.

He switched arms, now holding her around the waist, and began keeping their heads above water with his opposite arm. “No problem. Just say, Brad, you’re the best Scrabble player I know. I bow to you, you genius.”

She huffed out a laugh, raising her arm to the surface to help keep their chins from bobbing under. “I won. Three years in a row now.”

“Just luck.” He held her tighter, whispering next to her ear, his voice full of teasing. “You’re the best, Brad. That’s all I need to hear.”

“Broody Brad,” she murmured, knowing he hated it when she called him that—a slight from their childhood.

“What was that?” he asked, drilling his fingers into her side, tickling her.

She scream-laughed. “Damn it, Brad.” She fought him enough to turn and immediately realized her huge mistake as he held her chest to chest, and they stared into each other’s eyes.

He grinned. “This is certainly a situation.”

A droplet trailed down his face to land on his firm bottom lip, and his eyelashes were webbed together, making him even more irresistible than he already was. Her heart pounded, her pulse thundering in her throat, and she glared at him, needing to be free of him, well aware he was enjoying this far too much.

There was an undeniable attraction between them. All she had to do was press her mouth to his, and they would have a repeat of August. But they weren’t going there again. She wasn’t risking their friendship a second time.

Yesterday, I cried real tears of joy. If you know me, I don't cry easily. But, yesterday was an exception. I've been at this writing gig for nine years! In that time, I've written over 30 novels and short stories. I've contracted books with publishers but now I'm mostly a self-published author. I've spent years watching the landscape of my industry change, sometimes for good and sometimes not so good. I kept plugging away, learning new tricks, taking courses, and focusing on my craft. The books I wrote nine years ago are not necessarily the books I would write today, but they are part of who I am as an author. Why am I telling you all of this?

Because after years of pouring everything I have into my books, dealing with rejection, building a readership, making some amazing friends, and having days where I wanted to throw in the towel this happened...

HELP! I LOST 3,500 PREORDERS!

There was a GLITCH with AMAZON! The Romantically Ever After Box Set was scheduled to release on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. On Sunday, we received an email letting us know that the preorder had been cancelled and customers were being notified. The book was pulled! Two days before release. Seriously?

As many of you know, my fellow authors and I have been promoting, marketing, and sharing about this book for over six months. There's a lot of money tied up in that advertising, most of it we can't get back. The toughest part of this whole thing? We WERE in a good position to possibly hit the USA Today Bestsellers list going into release day. We needed those preorders.

R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name. Renae has always loved reading, and in third grade, she wrote her first poem where she learned she might have a knack for this writing thing. Lara remembers sneaking her grandmother’s Harlequin novels when she was probably too young to be reading them, and since then, she knew she wanted to write her own. When they met in college, they bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. What really spiced up their friendship was when Lara introduced Renae to romance novels. The genre I'm writing is MM Romantic Comedy. I first started reading MM romance back in 2016 when I came across a book by Elle Kennedy and Sarina Bowen called 'Him'; I was already a huge fan of Elle Kennedy's off-campus series and this one also appeared to be a light-hearted romp about college-aged hockey players...except of course both characters were guys. I wasn't sure going in if I'd like it but I thought 'what the hell? I may as well give it a shot and if I don't like it there's no harm done'. Well, I'm so glad I did give it a shot because that book was fantastic and it opened up a whole new genre for me. I still love MF romance, but MM is absolutely my favourite both for reading and writing.

So what is it about MM, and particularly MM romantic comedy that I love so much? Well, for starters, two hot guys is always going to be better than one, right? Secondly, I love exploring the emotional side. Being romantic comedies my books are pretty low on angst, but they're still full of love and having two guys wrestle with their feelings and make themselves vulnerable to each other is really something special. I also love the added tropes that come with MM; of course there are the old classics like Billionaire, Friends-to-Lovers, Enemies-to-Lovers, Boss/Employee, Best Friend's Sibling etc, but there's also Out for You (where one MC comes out for the other), Bi/Pan awakening (where one or both MCs who always thought they were straight realise they are actually into guys), Twink and Bear (small guy and big, brawny guy), Daddy/Boy (Age gap - MC is over 18 of course!), MMM+ (more than two guys in the relationship). Needless to say, there is plenty to keep a writer and reader on their toes!

If you've never read any MM before but would like to test the waters, here are a few books that are great for 'entry level' readers: - Him by Elle Kennedy and Sarina Bowen (as mentioned above, this was my first MM book!) - Tropes include friends-to-lovers, bi awakening, sports romance (hockey). I like to write romance novels. I write any flavour of romance, ie I have some sweet contemporary romance which i call my Chocolate Box Romances and market them as that. Then I write dark romance about marital abuse and rape. Romance takes shapes in lots of different ways and who says that sweet and romantic is the way that everyone wants to fall in love. Some have passionate, aggressive relationships and some fall in love with their captors. I always like to have a happy ever after because isn't that what we all want in life? I love the convoluted route that love can take and sometimes it just hits from out of nowhere. Sometimes characters need to work for it and sometimes it comes early in they have to work at it and maybe lose their way.

For me, the fun, and challenge, of writing romantic suspense is in the intricate weaving of the romance and suspense elements together. I want Lara and Zach’s love story so tangled in the mystery that readers can’t remove one without removing the other. To wonder, not only how they’re going to get their happily ever after, but how they’ll live long enough to get there.

In Over Our Heads is different from my other romantic suspense books because this is the first time I’ve used two amateur sleuths as main characters instead of having at least one of them be some sort of law enforcement or military professional. While Zach is a successful defense attorney, he’s not accustomed to the methods and lengths Lara will go to catch the real murderer, or to her blasé attitude toward the legality of such matters.

While Zach and Lara’s careers differ from characters in my other books, In Over Our Heads still delivers what my readers expect: a steamy romantic suspense story full of twists and turns that leaves them guessing until the very end. My personal promise to my readers is that I will always feature strong heroines who just need a man to love them, not to save them. And while my damsels usually find themselves in distress, they find a way out of it themselves. Lara is no exception. Though life has put her through an emotional ringer, she’s not about to let anyone or anything interfere with her mission to avenge her best friend and clear her father’s name.

In Over Our Heads is also special to me because it’s one of my NEPA (northeastern Pennsylvania) romances. Whenever I can, I love setting my stories in the parts of NEPA where I grew up and still live. It’s my way to pay homage to the region, and hopefully one day make it famous for more than just The Office. The town of Raven Falls in In Over Our Heads is a fictional town based on the real-life sleepy river town where I spent just about every weekend as a child and teenager. I also had fun reimagining the local legend of Campbell’s Ledge to play a prominent part in the murder mystery plot.

I can’t wait to share Lara and Zach’s love story with readers, and I hope they get as much enjoyment out of the harrowing twists and turns as I got out of writing them.

When researching the genre for my new series, I continued to see bully romance at the top of the charts. Curious about this hot new trend, I took a chance on a few to see what all the fuss was about. The writing was beautiful, the story lines well executed, and the characters were engaging. But instead of swooning my way through these books like I usually do reading romance, I found myself snarling and swearing with each turn of the page. Instead of cheering for a happily ever after I was internally lecturing these women on having self-respect and never allowing a man to treat them that way. I know. I’m a downer. LOL By the end of each book I’d still never gained sympathy for the hero because, well, any man who had uttered even a few of those cruel and hateful sentences to me in real life would have been castrated on the spot. Nothing sexy about that! It’s not that I’m against these romances or the women who write them. It’s fiction. Make believe. A story to be enjoyed. But even though I know that it’s fantasy, I just can’t enjoy them myself. So instead of taking everyone’s advice to write a hot new bully romance that will fly off the shelves, it inspired me to take my new series in a different direction. A less traveled direction. BEHIND THE SCENES OF A ROMANCE NOVEL

Many years ago, being a teenager, I wrote my very first 'book' – a retelling of one of my favorite soap operas. I kept it on my bedside table and read it every night before going to bed. It was a poor attempt to retell the story that I loved so much. But to me, that 'book' was the most valuable thing in the world. Back then, I didn't know writing would become my life. I wasn´t one of those bookworms who always fell asleep with a book in their hands. In fact, I hated reading and getting ready for my literature classes always felt like the biggest torture ever (smile).

My reading obsession started much later, but not even then did I think about writing a book. So what marked the beginning of my fictional adventures? The answer is… Love. My love story became my inspiration for Love Lines – my debut novel. Years passed, but I still believe that love that lives inside my heart makes me create more and more romantic stories. Some are sad, others are a bit unreal. But all of them have a happy ending. Why? Because I'm an optimist, and I'm sure that positive thinking leads to a better result in whatever you are doing, including writing.

I'm crazy about all things romance. Maybe that's why romantic stories are my major (smile). But what is so alluring about them? For me, it's an opportunity to dive into a beautiful world of love, where you are the creator of everything that is happening to your characters.

Facts about my books:

The hardest thing about plotting a romance novel – making it memorable and unique.
The most challenging part of the story – the first kiss. It always takes a lot of time to write the first kiss scene, even if it's gonna last just a few paragraphs. Showing the connection between the characters and the way they feel each other is what makes scenes like this most enjoyable. But to make your readers believe it's real, you need to do your best to find the right words and make them work for you. If a reader can easily imagine whatever is happening in the book, it means you've succeeded.
The most emotional part of the book – the ending. If I smile when typing 'The End' I know I've done it right. If I frown – I read the last page one more time and make changes until I feel like it sounds good enough to become the ending of the book. Because, as a reader and as a writer, I want to see the ending that will leave me with a pleasant 'book hangover' feeling.
The best thing about writing a romance – living through another romantic adventure together with my characters.

Writing a new story, I always think about a message I would like to send to my readers through the lines of a new book. I talk about various aspects of love, romance and relationships. Some readers might find the reflections of their own stories in my words, others might get the answers to the questions they have been asking themselves for a long time. Whatever it is that my readers see in my stories, I want it to stay in their hearts, making them fall in love with what I do and then look forward to reading my next book (another smile).

I always admired authors who were not afraid to write daring stories. My debut books were mostly clean romances. Hate at First Sight was the first book that I dared to make more 'open' and mature. Then it was Louise that I was a bit scared to publish, because the story wasn't just a romance; it combined suspense, mystery and the things like living in an orphanage and then working in a dance club – that some readers might call too unreal to become parts of one and the same story. But Louise turned out to be an amazing story and it sounded exactly the way I wanted it to sound.

For Romantically Ever After Box Set I've prepared another complex story that will remind you of Louise. Tess will tell a story of Louise's best friend. The two of them have been through a lot together, starting with their childhood in an orphanage and to the day they found themselves prisoners of a man who owned a closed dance club where men came to enjoy the beauty of women dancing for them. I’ve always been a romance writer, as far back as I can remember; I even wrote my first romance novel at fourteen. I love how two people just come together and click. That idea of finding the best person for you is so appealing to me, and I enjoy hearing about how people met and when they knew they’d completely fallen for the other person.

For It All Began with a Note, we get to see a little insight into the character of Camille – whose standalone story is part of the Romantically Ever After boxed set titled It All Began with a Mai-Tai. As Mai-Tai develops, we see a lot of spunk, to cover up a lot of pain. Camille knows she’s dating a serial cheater, but her self worth feels that it’s okay, that’s all she deserves. Until she meets a guy in Mexico, who shows her it’s not all she’s worth. As Mai-Tai progresses, it becomes a love triangle – she finds herself torn between the new guy, who has that spark of connection and seems to really understand what she’s going through and feels the need to protect her, and torn between the serial cheater, who may not have the best morals, but his heart is in the right place. It was fun to write these three characters, to watch the guys battle it out in very subtle ways, not necessarily against each other but in the way that benefits Camille. And watching her struggle between the two guys was super exciting. Each has their own appeal and compliments her in their own way, and I hope the readers think she chose well. You tell me in May. Did Camille make the right choice?

I’m writing a sort of reverse Pretty Woman story. The title of my book is Evan’s Wish. I’ve thought about writing a book with a wealthy heroine. I know the wealthy hero is popular in romance, but how often do you read about a wealthy heroine?

My heroine, Brooke, is wealthy from selling expensive homes: Multi-million dollar homes with several bedrooms, dream kitchens, and manicured landscaping. Homes with fantastic lake and mountain views. Estates with carriage houses and horse stables.

My books are set in made-up cities and towns in Vermont. There are some fantastic homes overlooking beautiful scenery in Vermont. If you’ve never been to Vermont, it really is that picturesque, especially in the fall. I’ve driven by homes like this and wondered about the people that live in them. Some of the homes are new, but many are hundreds of years old, with extensive renovations to add top-notch features.

I had the setting, and the heroine. Then I had to decide what to do about my hero. I did consider making him a prostitute, like in Pretty Woman. But my author brand is handyman heroes; men who work with their hands. I write about painters, landscapers, and carpenters. I decided to make my hero, Evan, a maintenance man. He mops floors, changes light bulbs, and performs assorted handyman tasks in a high-end condo complex.

Evan couldn’t afford to live in one of these high-end condos. He watches the wealthy residents as they scurry by, never greeting him, except for Brooke. He’s attracted to the pretty resident who smiles at him, and when they officially meet, Brooke asks him to attend an event with her. My book is also a fish out of water story, because Evan is a simple guy not used to dressing up or going to fancy parties. Brooke likes Evan, and offers to pay him to attend more events with her. Evan does a little digging to find out why she’d pay a man to escort her to events. And you’ll have to read the book to see why Evan needs the money.

I’m very interested in how money affects a romantic relationship. We have a woman who’s wealthy, and she’s with a man who drives an old truck and lives in a simple apartment with a roommate. Does it cause problems? Sure! Does it make for some hilarity, too? You bet! I’ll borrow a few scenes from Pretty Woman, but I’ll put my own twist on them.

When I attend writing classes, I often hear writing teachers say “Put your own twist on a trope.” The romance books I like the best offer a twist or a fresh way of looking at a common trope. In addition to the wealthy heroine/blue collar hero dynamic, I enjoy fish out of water stories as well. It’s amusing to watch someone thrust into a lifestyle they aren’t used to, and see them navigate and try to look natural.

I’m looking forward to sharing Evan’s Wish in this fantastic collection.
