On a recent trip to the East Coast, I had the opportunity to visit the most charming town of Portland, Maine. A place filled with character and many delightful culinary shops. I had the afternoon to walk around and take it all in, truly picturesque and lovely! I was smitten!

Walking along the main drag, Commercial Street, I stumbled upon the most delicious little specialty gourmet shop called VERVACIOUS. I was drawn by the aesthetics, the displays, the banner proudly boasting the write-up in O Magazine… and the name!!
Vervacious is defined as “Vibrant, exuberant, brilliant, inspired.” At this point, I was in love!! Loved the word, an adjective that should be in Webster’s… and I was in love with the store, the staff, the products and the story.

This is a husband/wife collaboration… being passionate about food, Heidi and Mark, set out to sail from Newfoundland down to the Caribbean then over to the Mediterranean on their ketch named Verve’… and “Vervacious” was born! Their culinary experiences along the way inspired them to capture the essence of their discoveries in these delightful little jars!! The kicker is that they are stackable and look adorable on my kitchen counter!!

There is an array of herbs and spices… and fusions of the same with sea salts… and then the sauces and vinegars, oh my!! I felt like I was in gourmet heaven!! I wanted to purchase one of everything, but my reality was having to pack it and getting it back to California!! So I compromised, I bought a few jars for myself and one as a gift… I went with Provencal Lavender Pepper Salt Blend, because I love lavender infused foods, Star Anise Salt, a wonderful and warm seasoning salt, and a Sicilian Sumac salt, a gift for my favorite Italian chef.

I wasn’t very sure about carrying the balsamic vinegars, so it wasn’t long after I returned home that an online order was submitted for the Balsamic vinegar trio, which included Chocolate balsamic, Espresso balsamic and Spiced Balsamic! I recently made a Cherry Tomato/Green Grape salad (read about it here) that I used the Spiced Balsamic in and just tonight I drizzled a spoonful of Chocolate Balsamic over a creamy Vanilla Bean Ice cream! In just an instant a simple treat became a wonderful and decadent creation!!

These products are a must have for any aspiring chef, foodie, or gourmet-next-door!! The wonderful thing is that you won’t have to travel all the way to Portland, Maine… you can go online to www.vervacious.com and order to your heart’s content!

The holidays are around the corner, this is perfect for all the gourmets in your life… a gift that will continue giving! From salts, rubs, spices and chocolate mixes to confits, sauces, infused mustards and pastes!Unique, beautiful, impressive and useful products!! Genius in every jar!

I invite you to visit the website and see all the accolades VERVACIOUS products have received from very respected figures in the culinary world! I, personally, would love to have one of everything!! (In case any of my friends should be reading this… AHEM!) LOL!

Heidi and Mark, thank you for inspiring me with your amazing creations, fusion of flavor and sheer genius! I adored your shop and your lovely staff, (Melanie was extremely helpful, knowledgable and friendly)!! I hope to visit again sometime in the near future… however, in the meantime, I will be sure to visit your online shop, time and time again!

Regards from a fellow foodie, fellow cook, and a huge fan!
Fruit and Herbs...

Cherry Tomato/Green Grape Salad

Back with the theme of being inspired by ingredients that are already in your kitchen. This is the “side salad” that I served with the Basil Walnut Pesto Orecchiette that I blogged about recently. It was a perfect mix of sweet/tart/savory, simple and a perfect accompaniment to a pasta dish!! It’s easy and quick, but that can remain our little secret!!

The measurements are "visually measured". I used basil to associate the salad's flavors to the pasta, but I think that fresh mint or tarragon would work just as wonderfully, alone or as a combination of any of these herbs. The kicker here was the special balsamic vinegar that I used to dress this salad. I purchased it online from a fantastic gourmet specialty shop called VERVACIOUS. I visited this shop while on a recent trip to Portland, Maine and I was like a kid in a candy store (blog to follow). I will give more details on the culinary treasures I discovered soon.

Approx. 1 pint of Cherry tomatoes
Approx. 1 pint of Green seedless grapes
1 and 1/2 tablespoons of chopped herbs (I used basil)
2 tablespoons of Extra Virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon VERVACIOUS Spiced Balsamic Vinegar (or plain balsamic)
Salt and pepper to taste

Cut the cherry tomatoes and grapes into halves lengthwise and put into a mixing bowl. Fold in the olive oil the balsamic vinegar. (Note: If you don’t have the wonderful spiced balsamic vinegar from VERVACIOUS, a good balsamic will do; the taste will be different, but still delicious). Add salt and pepper to taste.

This makes about 3-4 servings.

This simple salad is delicious with the pasta dish that I shared a few days ago. I am sure it would be delightful alongside most pasta dishes, as the brightness of this side dish cuts the starchiness in the pasta. This could pair well with sandwiches or would be a wonderful side at a picnic!!

Enjoy!

There always seems to be that eternal question of "What's for Dinner?"... and today was not any different for me. There is much to be said about always having a well stocked pantry... as well as, fresh herbs nearby... either in your fridge, or in your garden. The simplest ingredients can make the most amazing meals...

Today I decided to make a fresh pesto... easy, better and healthier than store bought pesto... minus all the preservatives! More importantly, you control the quality of the olive oil as well as the amount of salt... this is key for people with restricted diets and/or allergies. If you plan ahead, having key or basic ingredients saves time and money.

I was feeling a bit creative, and I was inspired by walking into my kitchen and seeing fresh ingredients. This pasta dish is easy, flavorful and sure to be a hit with your family or guests. I used a recipe from Ina Garten (The Barefoot Contessa), one of my favorite chefs, as inspiration to make this version. Of course, I improvised a bit by using the ingredients that I already had handy. Today, I was cooking for two people... so I took the measurements I would normally use to make a large batch of pesto and simply used half the amounts...
If you are feeding a family of 4-6, simply double the measurements.

2 1/2 packed cups of fresh Sweet Basil leaves
3-4 cloves of garlic
Approx. 1/3 cup of chopped walnuts
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon fresh black pepper
1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
1/2 - 3/4 cups of good olive oil
1/2 lb. of Orecchiette pasta

Place garlic and walnuts into a food processor and process for about 30 seconds, using the steel blade attachment. Add the basil leaves, salt and pepper and continue to process. With the processor running slowly pour in the olive oil. Finally, add the parmesan cheese and process until a smooth consistency is achieved.

Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to the package's instructions. Today, I chose to use Orecchiette, which means "little ears" in Italian. The lovely thing about this variety of pasta is that the concave pasta pieces hold the sauce they are being tossed in.

Once the pasta is done, save approximately one cup of pasta water. The water that the pasta is cooked in has a lot of starch and is used to help create a thicker pesto (if you like). Once drained, pour the pasta back in the pot you used to cook it in and spoon in about 2/3 of the pesto. Fold in gently and using about two tablespoons of the reserved pasta water to create a richer sauce. (Keep in mind that the pasta water is optional. I chose not to use it this time and it created a cheesier coating on the pasta). Serve immediately, season to taste.

This pasta dish is delicious with a simple side salad of greens tossed in EVOO. I was feeling a bit creative and made a Cherry Tomato/Green Grape salad (recipe to follow on another blog).

On another note, this pesto can be made ahead of time, and if you have any leftover, it can be stored in an airtight container for 7-10 days with a light layer of Olive oil on top to preserve the freshness.

For another recipe idea... you can use this pesto to create a great party dip for veggies or pita chips!! Simply mix with sour cream, or for a healthier version...mix it into some plain greek-style yogurt!!

Great dinners don't have to be complicated... the simplest ingredients create the most amazing dishes. Go ahead... impress your family or guests... let them think you slaved in the kitchen... what they don't know won't hurt them... they will be loving you and your fantastic meal! :)

Bon appetite!!
What a night!

The Naked Oyster Bistro and Raw Bar
Hyannis, MA

On a recent trip to visit a dear friend, we had the wonderful opportunity to see the remarkable Tony Bennett live in concert, at the Cape Cod Melody Tent! An amazing entertainer even at at his age, Mr. Bennett, is like a fine wine, he gets better with age!! Of course, with great music, comes great food to create an experience!!

After, what we (Mary, Mark and I) thought was the best live performance ever, we felt ourselves quite famished.... And when in the Cape, seafood is the first choice. Mary, being quite the knowledgeable Cape Cod hostess, and quite the foodie... recommended that we go to an area favorite, THE NAKED OYSTER, which had very recently moved to a brand new location. It had a very urban-chic vibe when we walked in, and it was quite busy for a late night in a sleepy town (which was not too far from the famous Kennedy compound)!!

We were quickly whisked to the back dining room.... Where before long, we were presented by some delicious creations from the sea. Appetizers were the components of the meal, and a way to taste several dishes. The oysters here all come from local oyster farmers and are extremely fresh. You can't really go wrong with any of the varieties of shellfish...
So we ordered an oyster sampler... And they were all delicious! The Oysters Rockefeller, of course, was my fave. Rich, perfectly flavored and decadent, a must have!

Clam chowder is, of course, a staple I find the need to order when you know the clams are super fresh. Great texture, great flavor.... Delicious.

Crab Cakes!! I am a huge fan of crab cakes... And a huge fan of anything fusion, sweet, tangy and savory all coming together to create a party in your mouth! The crab could not be more fresh and flakey... Combining a mouthful of the crab cake with some of the tangy citrus, mango salad and the Cajun spice Aioli... And that is a serious flavor explosion in your mouth! So good!!

Last was the Seafood Ceviche "Martini"... What to say about ceviche that is made with extremely fresh, local seafood? Fresh goodness every bite through and through! Of course, being a big fan of all things spicy... I had to add a dash of hot sauce, but not to take away from the integrity of the dish, I'd still order it again. Paired with fresh avocado, and freshly made chips... It's a great accompaniment to any of the delicious drinks their bar serves up, or a bright , fresh dry white wine, like a Pinot Grigio.

The food was delicious, and the company priceless.... However, the only thing lacking here was the service. We concluded that the staff was still trying to acclimate to the new location, and towards the end of our meal we felt rushed to finish it. Sadly, the lack of service could put a dent into an experience. I think I would give this place a second chance on my next visit to Hyannis.... Assuming Mr. Bennett is healthy and strong next year, I will be back to see another performance which I'm sure will be just as unforgettable as this one was.... And follow it by some memorable oysters!!!

One delicious bite at a time....

OOOOhhhh, Boy....OOOOOOhhhh, Boy!! :)

Red O
On the fashionable Melrose, West Los Angeles, CA

Oh, boy, Oh boy.... or should I be saying?? ... Oh Rick, Oh Rick!!!
The master chef, Rick Bayless, and best ambassador to Mexican cuisine, has come to LA!! After making a name for himself with his restaurants in Chicago, IL; Frontera Grill, the more upscale Topolobampo, and the newer brainchild XOCO... Rick has moved West, to the area that could be the mecca of Mexican cuisine, outside of Mexico.

Bayless is a very celebrated chef and best selling author of cookbooks, having won the coveted James Beard award and earned much acclaim from some of the best food publications in the country... How does one resist then to visit such an acclaimed establishment?? ....Moreover... what a perfect location to celebrate a birthday??

On my recent 41st birthday, I along with 13 of my wonderful foodie friends went to RedO... with some pretty high expectations, and we were not disappointed!! The restaurant as a whole has a wonderful vibe... a very extensive tequila bar to complement the truly authentic menu. Delicious drinks, La Sirena, El Catrin, to name a few, the favorite by far was El Alacran (The Scorpion), a delicious concoction of lemony tartness and the spiciness of chile peppers... rimmed with a chili/salt mix that's yummy through every sip!!

When you gather 14 foodies in a restaurant that has a BRIGHT BITES menu, similar to Spanish TAPAS, you will have most of the menu items ordered to that table... so to say that it rained fantastic food that night is an understatement!!

Much to say about all the dishes that were ordered... and all great things!! Here are the dishes that stood out... and for the most part, the ones the made it before the camera before they mysteriously vanished!!

The Shrimp Ceviche... one word, flavorful!! I am quite particular about the preparation of this Mexican treat, and Mr. Bayless did not skip a beat... a definite must try!! I must try one of the other three on the next visit!

The Plantain Sopes... I had to try the creative, and not usual use of ingredients... there was a completely separate party in my mouth!! This would be perfect for all my vegetarian friends!! Delicious!

The Cazuelas for Soft Tacos... I can't say enough about the Adobo marinated Duck Tacos... something u just won't find at your average taqueria... very memorable!!

Then there are the CELEBRATED SEVEN. These are traditional regional dishes that Mr. Bayless has perfected. I wish I could have ordered one of each, but alas I was able to sample one of the two pork dishes. The COHINITA PIBIL... form the Yucatan region, achiote-marinated and slow cooked in banana leaves; you take a bite and you are instantly transported to Mexico. Rick does not skip a beat on flavor, texture and presentation!

Always having room for dessert, even after a surprise birthday cake, I had to try the creamy Goat Cheese Cheesecake, served with caramel corm and a Mexican "Root Beer" sauce... I can still savor the smooth creamy consistency that melted as it touched my tongue! Who would have thought... Goat Cheese? Believe it!... more importantly, try it! You will thank me!

All in all, this culinary experience did not disappoint. I am sure I will return and try different items every time! Having grown up on truly authentic Mexican cuisine, I am proud to say that Rick really represents the spirit and flavors of Mexico in his genius creations! All those years of living there and absorbing the culture truly paid off!
I can't wait to visit his acclaimed restaurants in Chicago and report back with equally fantastic, if not more amazing reviews!!

A phenomenal culinary experience through and through. The food was definitely center stage, and it was my pleasure to share the limelight!
Thanks to the staff at the Red O for the amazing evening and a very memorable 41st birthday celebration!!

Buen Provecho!!

So here I go again.... chasing the food featured on the "BEST THING I EVER ATE"!

Duff Goldman from "The Ace of Cakes" ranted and raved about this Lobster Roll that is found in Wellfleet, MA (a quaint town on Cape Cod)... right off the main highway... in a family diner... who would have known???

You know what they say?? "When in Rome..."... well then, when on the Cape... go to PJ's in Wellfleet! There are Lobster Rolls everywhere, I know!... and Clam Chowder (Hello?? You're in New England!) ... but there is something about the simplicity of this Lobster Roll... the absolutely fresh and flaky Lobster meat they use, mixed in just the perfect amount of mayo... served on a buttery (very buttery), slightly toasted bun, that absolutely makes this one stand out, and worth trying!

Given the amount of food we had been consuming... this really was a stopover for a snack, but we made enough room for some Onion Rings to accompany the sandwich... Yum! Based on what we ate, I can only assume that the rest of the seafood dishes and sides are just as fresh and delicious!

Duff, my friend, good call on this Lobster Roll! Fresh, flaky seafood goodness, worth trying time and time again... or when on the Cape!!
Flour Bakery + Cafe

During a stop over in this fantastic place they call Bean Town... I had to to take the time to go visit a bakery that received special mention on the Food Network, by none other than Mr. Bobby Flay! This particular place was featured on one of my new favorite shows, "THE BEST THING I EVER ATE"!! In this show, celebrity chefs talk about places they have been to that offered a particular dish that they absolutely loved!! So for those of you food lovers that want the opinion of someone with a highly developed palette, it doesn't hurt to try the places and dishes featured on this show!

Having said that, I am a huge fan of all fantastic desserts, being a long time baker, I must say I have developed quite the discriminating palette! So let me tell you... if you ever find yourself in the Boston area... you have got to make the time for a visit to Flour Bakery + Cafe!! You will not be sorry!

These sticky buns are quite the craze and they go fast!! We got there about 11:30 am and they were out... however, much to our delight there was a batch in the oven and we were told it would be about an hour! We ordered brunch/lunch in the meantime and were not disappointed with that either.

A breakfast sandwich with egg and Applewood Smoked Bacon; one word... delicious! The piece de resistance for me was a Sliced Roasted Lamb Sandwich with a Tomato Chutney and Goat Cheese.... need I say more?? I think not!! It melted in your mouth and the flavors all balanced each other perfectly!

I had to force myself to eat only half the sandwich, because I needed to save room for the star of the show!! And the star was worth the wait!! This Sticky bun is everything that Bobby (Flay) said it was... buttery, flaky and the perfect amount of caramel goodness... most sticky buns are too sweet, in my opinion... this one was more buttery than sweet and the pecans with the gooey caramel just dance on your tongue!!

A must try! I know that when I find myself back in the East Coast, there will be a Pecan Sticky Bun from Flour Bakery with my name on it!!

There is a reason their slogan reads: "Make life sweeter... eat dessert first!"
Yes... you heard that correctly! The "lunch trucks" with greasy and "just ok" offerings are now mostly a thing of the past!! The new and improved, and wildly popular GOURMET food trucks are the thing to do and EAT in the general SoCal area!! Who would have thought???

So, in July of this year the 2nd Annual LA STREET FOOD FEST took place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA!!

The event was expecting 5,000 people, and 5,000 people it got!! Yes... it was completely sold out!! 5,000 food loving people congregated to taste samplings of mostly gourmet catering trucks and some small eateries all over LA. Most of those eateries are what we would normally refer to as "hole in the wall" or "mom and pop" places to eat! Let me just say one thing... catering truck, hole in the wall... doesn't matter..... if the food is good... I am there!! (and apparently 4,999 other people agree with me, as well!) LOL

I am the first to admit that I love, love, love swanky restaurants and trendy eateries... but it isn't always about all things swanky.... what it is always about is TASTE! ... and if you can serve it up, wherever and however it comes, there are some serious foodies in this town that will be all over it!

Below are a few of the tastings that we were fortunate enough to try, in a nutshell; I reiterate... these are a few and definitely my favorites:

CEMITAS & CLAYUDAS (2560 E. Gage Ave, Huntington Park, CA 90255).... (www.lascabronas.com) (BTW... pardon their Mexican "french" LOL)
In essence, Mexican antojitos on steroids! I tried a cemita, which is a small sandwich or torta. It was small but it packed a punch in flavor!! I can't wait to go to their location to try more things and report back to you all!

THE MANILA MACHINE (a Catering Truck... www.themanilamachine.com):
Voted the overall favorite in the Food Fest, an amazing Pork Belly and Pineapple Adobo and the ever popular Filipino favorite, Lumpia... it was no accident that this was the biggest crowd pleaser!! I want to try more!!

FRESH FRIES (Gourmet Truck.... www.freshfries.biz):
Serving Fresh fries in all their varieties: Regular fries, Curly Fries, Sweet Potato Fries.... with many choices of toppings and dipping sauces! Who would have thought that you could create a menu around fries? The two variations as shown on this picture, were regular fries with their version of a guacamole and a fresh cream sauce.... the other was Sweet Potato Fries with Peanut Butter and Chocolate to dip them into! Clearly decadent... and a very occasional treat.... but Oh my goodness.... goodness on a whole other level!! :)

KABOB n' ROLL (Gourmet Truck... www.kabobnroll.com):
Offering Mediterranean food with more flavor than you know what to do with!! I was able to try a chicken and a lamb kabob.... and they were oh so good!! I can't wait to see what other Mediterranean favorites they offer!!

CREPE'N AROUND (Gourmet truck... www.crepenaround.com):
I am the biggest fan of all things Paris... and when it comes to Crepes, I am a bit particular about authenticity and taste. Something to be said about the guys that took the concept of French crepes and gave them a complete gourmet twist.... and Yuuuuuu-uuum... the result I got to sample was a savory Maple Braised Pork crepe, with Apple Chutney, toasted Walnuts and mixed greens and a honey Vinaigrette! I am sure I will log online to track these guys for further tasters!!

ROSA'S BELLA CUCINA (Gourmet Truck) (www.rosabellacucina.com):
So for those of you who have never tried this little Italian rice ball they call ARANCINI... you are seriously missing out!! I have tried the real version in Italy, as well as the gourmet take of some fancier restaurants in the LA area... these are seriously good!! They are basically made of cheesy risotto balls that are fried to perfection.... no need for words here... bite into one and you know what I am talking about! Another Italian favorite is ZEPPOLE, which is their version of a French BEIGNET or an American DONUT... I will make the justification for this treat because it is the Italian thing to do! LOL ... Try it and you will see!!

I have included the websites of all the catering trucks... Here is how most of them roll (pun totally intended!)... You log on to their website, or add them as favorites on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter. They post daily and/or weekly schedules of their locations and you make it a point to be there when they show up! Yes, I must admit, it sounds like a wild goose chase, but it's a fun game to play, nonetheless!! I dare you to join me in this game and email me to tell me which you have gone to visit... none of these disappoint!

With that said, for those of you interested in a foodie adventure of this type... you can join me and my friends at the OC FOODIE FEST on August 28th from 11am to 6pm in Orange County. Log on to www.ocfoodiefest.com for further event info and ticket information!!

I am sure that this will not be my first nor last post on Gourmet Trucks!! Join me on this crazy exploration of decadent goodness thru the streets of LA (and the OC)!!

Bon Apetite, my friends!!
Organic or Not???

Health 101...

For those of you who follow my blog, you know that I am all about great, amazing, well-prepared delicious food. While I believe life is too short and that you must fully enjoy the things you love to eat, I also believe that moderation is key... and where all things culinary make me happy, I must draw the line and only occasionally treat myself to food that I would not eat on a daily basis, (such as all the decadent comfort food all over our city!!). What I do aim to eat on a regular basis, are sensible, fresh meals that actually have high nutritional value.

I started on this healthy way of living almost a decade ago, and tweaked my diet almost a handful of times, the last being after attending an Anthony Robbins event in Los Angeles, where Tony spent an entire day (at the Kodak theatre) teaching us everything he knew about health and wellness. To that I will add that the man is very knowledgeable in the subject, sharing partnerships in several companies in the wellness industry. One of the companies he introduced to me was Living Fuel. They make probably one of the only energy bars that is actually good for you... (Yes! You heard that right!! Most energy bars are packed with sugars and calories, and don't exactly live up to the "good for you" claim!)... You can order Living Fuel bars online; they are delicious and they are good for you!

Where this post is not to sell you on my favorite energy bar... it is to share with you some information that I received in my email from Living Fuel. (I highly recommend you get on their email list, as they always send information that is cutting edge in all things wellness.) I have written about shopping at your local Farmers' markets, not only to support the local farmers, but also to eat healthier, sustainable, organic foods. This is exactly the information that came in e-mail from LivingFuel and inspired this post.

There have always been questions about whether or not it matters or if it is even relevant to buy organic or not. The specialists at Living Fuel have taken the science and mystery out of it all and provided us with a list of the the "Clean 15"... the fruits and veggies that do matter if they are organic or not. The video also gives you some helpful and simple tips for identifying different categories of product (e.g., conventional, organic, genetically modified).

See here for a link to the informative video: www.livingfuel.com/Fruit_and_Vegetable_Labels.aspx

I invite you to take a look... and visit the website. If you're curious enough, you might order a box of CocoChia bars... delicious and good for you! A new breed of tea is born.... and it is gonna give the rest of the teas some serious competition!!!

Ladies and gentlemen... let me present to you EnlighTea Cafe. A genius collection of truly flavorful and amazing tea blends!

Having developed a true affinity for tea over the last few years, I am delighted to share some of the blends I was very fortunate to sample.

Strawberry Sassafras
The packaging for this tea makes reference to reminiscing about the good old days. It made me quite giddy that they were able to capture the true essence of strawberry, sassafras, and root beer. This blend does not require any sweetener (as it is already delicately sweetened with Stevia). It is ready to serve, truly delicious.. and the best part about this tea is that you get the flavor without the calories or carbs! I tried this as a regular hot tea and as an iced tea.... in both forms it is equally fantastic and very refreshing!! A must try!!

Relax
Soothing botanicals of St. John's Wort, lemongrass and chamomile, along with the warmth of anise, really allow this tea to live up to its name! This tea is so aromatic it actually allows your worries to melt away, at the same time, lifting your spirit and giving your taste buds something to dance about!! I enjoyed the lemongrass notes that really show up and make this tea very different from most chamomile blends! I will go back to this variety, time and time again!

Caffe Latte
There was most definitely a genius behind this blend. They took all the yummy, goodness from coffee and the benefits of black tea and combined it to create a tea worthy of its title. It is specifically blended to drink with milk... but I had it without the creamy stuff and it was perfectly flavorful. For those trying to ween off the java... not a bad way to ween into teas... I will forewarn you, however, the caffeine kick in here is about the same as a cup of joe... Being a big fan of Chai Tea Lattes...This blend is simply delicious!! Well worth trying..

All in all, I am quite impressed with this new line of teas!! You gotta love a line of teas that stands for love, light and peace and overall well-being. There are some lovely thoughts and quotes on their packaging that encourage us to be a stand for those things in our lives! I invite all my tea-loving friends to go online and checkout the entire line of products! For those of you who are not the biggest tea aficionados, it might possibly be because you have never tried teas as artfully blended and flavorful as these!! I must now say... not all teas are created equally!

There is definitely some genius behind this company... they are set to launch in Fall 2010! Keep your eye out for it... the tea world will never be the same!! (I will keep all of my followers updated!)

For more information you can contact my friends at Enlightea at:
P.O. It happens to be the perfect alternative for vegetarians and vegans; however, you don't have to be either to enjoy a healthy meal here!

The PAPA'S PORTOBELLO is a grilled portobello mushroom on a wheat bun and dressed with chopped tomatoes, garlic and basil pomodoro, caramelized onion, pesto and chipotle ranch sauce! (You have the option of ordering anything protein-style = on a bed of kale)... I must confess, I had the side of sweet-potato fries (my weakness)... but everything is ok in moderation, right?

The GRILLIN' CHICKIN' sandwich was amazing! You'd never know it's not chicken! Served on a whole wheat bun, with avocado, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cilantro pesto, and chipotle ranch. Had this with the side of Steamin' Kale.... the texture was perfect, as was the taste!

We also tried the CHINESE CHICKIN' salad. I must explain, CHILLIN' CHICKEN is made of some specially seasoned and marinated veggie protein blends (including soy), which look and taste like chicken (no pun intended), really.... it does.... and is pretty delicious!

So if you are committed to change your unhealthy ways, this is a great alternative when you are out and about! Remember... change happens one step at a time!! This could be that first step in the right direction to the road of wellness!!

I am sure this will be quite the rage with many of my "health nut" friends!

To your health, mes amis!!

Elle :)

Something about the heat makes me crave dishes on the lighter side, and it doesn't take more than a trip to the local farmers' market to draw inspiration! This is a great opportunity to turn down the heat, but turn on the delicious healthy eats!!

Many of you (who are my friends on Facebook)... have seen me post or comment about the salads I concoct and throw together for quick healthy lunches (or sometimes dinner). Here is a salad that I threw together on a Saturday afternoon, having just returned from a local Farmers' market. The intense flavors in the fruit and veggies that fresh are truly amazing, and can potentially make all the difference!

I did want to mention that this salad is spontaneous. The ingredients here are what I happened to mix together this time! There is definitely no right or wrong way with ingredients... I offer you my salad so that it might serve as a map to making your own creations:

About 3 to 4 cups of organic mixed greens, arugula and/or baby spinach
1 large yellow nectarine
1 large Plum
Approx. 6 to 8 strawberries
1/4 cup of chopped walnuts
Handful of Dried Cranberries
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Chive Blossom Vinegar (See below for other suggestions)
Sea salt
Freshly Ground Pepper

Toss the washed and dried greens into a large salad bowl with the fruit diced into small squares. Drizzle about 2 tbsp. of EVOO and about 1 tbsp. of vinegar over your ingredients and toss. Season with salt and pepper...then top with walnuts and cranberries.

This can be a light meal for 1 or 2... or can make a fresh side with some broiled white fish. I have made other varieties of this by sprinkling some crumbled goat cheese or gorgonzola cheese on top.... or for a heartier alternative, shred some chicken and mix into the salad!

As for the vinegars, I happened to receive this one as a gift, but you can normally find flavored vinegars in specialty food shops, or a grocery store like Whole Foods. If you have White wine vinegar or Champagne Vinegar, that would work wonderfully with a salad like this! Again... there is no right or wrong; the star ingredients are the pieces of fruit that you choose!

Using very fresh produce makes the flavors pop in your mouth... Support your local farmers and go to the Farmers' market! An amazing summer side salad that can add spark and brightness to any main course!!

This is my take on a couple of recipes inspired by both Giada DeLaurentiis and Alexandra Guarnaschelli; a fusion of their ideas, if you will.

About 1 pint of cherry tomatoes (cut in half)
6 oz. of seedless watermelon (cut into small cubes)
1 tbsp. fresh chopped Tarragon
1 tbsp. of fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 tbsp. balsamic vinegar
About 1/3 cup of extra virgin olive oil
Sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the liquid ingredients and season to taste. Place all other ingredients in a medium sized salad bowl and pour the liquid over; fold over gently so that neither the tomatoes nor the watermelon get bruised.
Season to taste; but go easy on the salt in an effort to maintain the brightness of the fruit. You don't want to dull the fruit with the salt.

You can alternate the herbs with chopped fresh basil or fresh mint and there really is no right or wrong way to do this. If you have other tomato varieties; those can be used as a substitute... although the cherry tomatoes work the best.

This side is truly lovely with a light white fish or grilled/roasted chicken. Your guests will be wowed... I have made 2 different versions of this salad... and every time, a true hit!!

I would love to hear back with feedback or alternative versions of this salad!
Happy cooking and as always, happy eating!!

Elle :)

I shared about a lecture I attended where Alice Waters, renowned chef and writer, spoke about a change that is desperately needed in our schools and in our country in general. This change pertains to what we are feeding our children and what we are choosing to consume as adults. We live in a culture that is heavily saturated with so many fast food options that eating processed and fatty foods has simply become a way of life because it is easier, more convenient, and sadly, with so many "value" menus out there, cheaper (at least that's the front end acquisition cost). Alice was standing against this and the conversation was about sustainable food; growing our food supply (fruits and vegetables) locally and organically, and incorporating those foods, in our everyday meals.

There are several pioneers in this revolution, leaders that are truly passionate about this cause and simply choose to take a stand for our health as a country. I personally think these people, like Alice Waters, are real life heroes. As I sit here in my living room watching the preview of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, I definitely have to add Jamie to that list of heroes. Even though his mission is a bit different and doesn't necessarily stress growing our own food, the general idea is similar. That is, we need to change our food system, and more importantly, eating habits to make America healthier.

ABC is airing this new reality show, where Jamie is trying to revolutionize the way schools are feeding our children. The premiere show begins in Huntington, West Virginia, which has been declared the unhealthiest city in America. As part of the show, Jamie attempts to also teach local families how to cook and eat more healthily. As you might expect, the show documents the struggles he will have endured in this process, but one can't help but be moved by his tenacity and determination. I must admit that I was moved to tears, and as I sit here writing about it, I am still saddened by the people's resistance to change, and the evident ignorance that prevails about what "is good for us" and what real nutrition is. Having said that, I am no expert in the matter, but after years of a lot of personal research and changing my eating habits full circle four times over (at least) and being a member of a family that has literally revolutionized how they eat at home, I can't help but become truly present to how we, culturally speaking, live with a mindset of "ignorance is bliss"; and by default living with a "what you don't know won't kill you" mentality. This mentality was very apparent to me in the show. I would love to know how everyone else thinks after seeing the first episode.

My words might seem a bit harsh to some, but I speak from my heart. I truly believe this show is a wake up call, of sorts, to our country, communities, families. There is no time like the present to educate ourselves and our loved ones about what is truly "good for us" and what is hurting us, and how some of the food we are eating, sadly, is making us sick. Ironically, the information is at our fingertips... a Google search away!

I made a commitment when I started this blog that my posts would be fun to read, but I am also committed to sharing what I can about incorporating healthy habits into meals. Yes, I blog about a lot of decadent foods and restaurants, but like with anything, all of that should be experienced and enjoyed in moderation. How we eat everyday and how and what we cook at home, is what matters. So, as the saying goes: "The Buck Stops Here". This simply means that I need to bring you more recipes of healthy meals. I too have a burden in my heart about how the people that I love eat. That being said, it's not the end of fun and yummy things, just remember that moderation is key.

I invite you all to watch this new series with me... Challenge all the parents out there to sit and watch this with your kids... seeing is believing!! Will you join me??? It may not be "happy" TV... but it is a reality check that we should all consider. There is no better place to start revolutionizing how our country eats, than in our own homes! I would love to hear your thoughts, please share!

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
2 Hour Premiere
Friday, March 26, 2010
8:00 pm PDT
ABC (Check your local listings)

As they should have been intended!!

Gentlemen.... Listen up! If you are looking for the ideal "date night".... and want to make a lasting impression??? Going to the movies has never been this appealing!!

In old town Pasadena.... GOLD CLASS CINEMAS is now catering to a new genre of movie-goers!! Come see what it's all about!

The beauty of planning ahead is that you already have your tickets waiting for you... (it is very recommended to go online a few hours or days before you plan on arriving, given the limited seating!)...

Next, you are escorted down a pair of escalators, where you will be greeted by a very cheerful staff and a fantastic lounge. You may want to arrive a bit earlier (at least 45 mins. before showtime); this allows you to enjoy the lounge and one of the many specialty beverages they will prepare for you (You heard correctly...they have a full bar).

From Gold Class Cinemas

You are then escorted into the theater which houses anywhere between a couple dozen to about 30 luxurious lounge chairs.... (and yes, they recline).... you will even get a pillow and blankie, if your heart desires!

Your server presents you with a menu which consists of appetizers and finger foods!
From a foodie's perspective.... the food is not bad... but hardly deserves raves. The drinks on the other hand; very good! I will have to say, I do want to try the potatoe chips with blue cheese dipping sauce, next time and the Beignets, have been calling out to me!!

Having said that.... you may want to consider dinner (or lunch, whatever the case may be) beforehand. There are many local restaurants within walking distance, SUSHI ROKU (a personal favorite), being clear across the quad.

When your movie is over you have the option of hanging out in the lounge area, where a local DJ is mixing some fun background music!

I must say... not quite the movie experience we have become accustomed to! The only problem one might consider is that you may never want to see a movie the old conventional way! (And we thought it couldn't get better than "stadium" seating!)

For further information, go to: www.goldclasscinemas.com

Pasadena Location:
•Address: 42 Miller Alley, Pasadena, CA 91103, USA
•Phone: (626) 639-2260

Enjoy your movie!!! Amazing breakfast!!

On my previous posting I offered a simple and healthy recipe for CALABACITAS with QUINOA. I might be speaking for myself, but most recipes leave you with quite a bit of leftovers when you are cooking for one or two people... I personally enjoy leftovers reheated the next day, but I know many who just don't like them!

As an ode to all my single friends.... here are a couple very quick and easy breakfast ideas to recreate the CALABACITAS into a fresh light easy breakfast... I promise this is FAST!

Simply reheat (about 1 cup) of calabacitas in a skillet for about 3-4 minutes.... throw in 2 whole eggs (salt and pepper to taste).... and voila!! ... You have a Veggie Breakfast scramble! (Add more of the ingredients, depending on what you have left and how many servings you need).

From Food and Recipes

Serving Options:
You can eat this plain or tucked into a Sprouted Wheat Tortilla (I recommend the Ezekiel brand), Makes a great wrap and it is very healthy!

You can also substitute 3 egg whites for the whole eggs for an even lower calorie/high protein/low cholesterol version!

This can also work as an omelette, however, that might take a bit longer to make, and I promised this was FAST!

Garnishing with some cheese or fresh salsa livens up this meal!

Who said that making a fresh breakfast would be too complicated? You will have a dish in hand before the coffee has finished brewing!!

Enjoy!!

Elle :)

Many times, some of the best meals that are the easiest to whip up come from ingredients that are already in your refrigerator and pantry!

Here is a quick dinner that I (in this case) "threw together" in just a few minutes... the result: CALABACITAS with a side of QUINOA... Easy, tasty and fast... a great meal for working people... (a great one for vegetarians... and this could be vegan, as well!) and for those who have committed to being healthy in the new year!

From Food and Recipes

CALABACITAS:

2 Zucchinis or Mexican Squash (diced)
2 Yellow squash (diced)
2 fresh ears of corn (cut off the cob)
1 fresh Serrano pepper (seeded and chopped finely)
2 shallots (or about 1/3 cup of finely diced onion)
3 cloves of fresh garlic (minced)
2-3 tbsp. of Grapeseed oil
Goat Cheese (or queso fresco)
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper

(Makes approximately 4 servings)

Saute the shallots or onion, minced garlic, corn and serrano chili in the oil for about 5 minutes. Add the squash (make sure it is not diced too small, as it will cook fast and possibly become mushy). Salt and pepper to taste. Cook for about 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally so that it cooks evenly. Sprinkle some of the goat cheese (or queso fresco)...(though it adds a lot of flavor to this dish... the cheese could be optional)... and stir in the cheese so that it incorporates itself into the dish. Grate some fresh Parmesan cheese on top to taste. It serves as a garnish as well!

(On a side note: There is no right or wrong way to make this dish. Traditionally, it is served with queso fresco, but I used goat cheese because that is what I had in the refrigerator. I have had Calabacitas a variety of ways, I prefer to saute in the pan this way, as it allows the squash to stay whole and still a bit crispy. Improvising is totally ok... again, use what you have!)

QUINOA

1 cup Quinoa
2 cups of Vegetable Stock (or Chicken Stock)

Bring stock to a boil in a 1 1/2 Quart saucepan. Reduce to simmer and add quinoa. Cover and cook until all the liquid is absorbed (about 10-15 minutes).

(About 4 servings)

This is a great and much healthier alternative to rice, easy and delicious (You can purchase this in most stores). Follow the directions on the box. Though the instructions call for water, I personally like to play with my food, so I change things up to add some flavor by using stock, without compromising the quality, healthy factor and taste; on the contrary... this is a great way to flavor this grain, without using too much sodium!

So there you have it! Fast, easy and delicious! This meal could be prepared in under 30 minutes from start to finish! If you plan ahead and purchase the ingredients on a grocery trip beforehand, making dinner on a whim, isn't so bad!

Are you cooking for one or two people?? I will follow this post with a recipe for the leftovers.... 2 dishes in one... how can you beat that??

Enjoy this "Fast food"... that is good for you!

Cheers To your health and a healthy 2010!

Elle :)

I have made a commitment to post at least 3 entries a week and eventually more... but for starters you will see more of me than you were used to. I will share restaurant reviews, locally and in cities I visit or have recently been to. I will incorporate more of my favorite recipes so that you too can enjoy some of this delicious fare at home!!

I will also share my notes about places that I've traveled to and there will be more about cultural events, locally and not so locally! A smorgasbord, if you will, for all!

What gives me the most pleasure and excitement is that I will share with you a journal of sorts as I venture through Culinary school this summer! It will include my thoughts and more recipes... pictures... (lots of pictures)... and quite possibly video demonstrations of techniques in the kitchen and other fare that might be of interest to you!

I invite you wholeheartedly to share your thoughts and comments on my blog, as my goal is to grow this blog with you all!! Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions and constructive criticism.... ALL WELCOME!

With that said... I look forward to sharing an amazing 2010 with you and I wish for you nothing but happiness, success, love and many great dishes!

Warmest Regards,

Elvia (ELLE .... as my friends call me) :)

As the weather was warm but crisp, we took a seat outside and our very delightful server, Emily came to explain the specials of the day and offer us a drink.

We ordered a Cucumber Gimlet... a drink made with muddled cucumber and lime... I chose the vodka version, since I'm not the biggest fan of gin! Ode to the bartender... quite the delicious concoction! (If only I could get that recipe!!)....LOL!

From Mike and Anne's South Pasadena

For an appetizer, we went with one of the daily specials; Spicy Tomato-Herb Risotto with Crispy Calamari. It was topped with black olives, thin slices of red-onion and micro greens. This dish was the perfect starter, bursting with flavor!! The sauce was a bit spicy, but ever so delicious!! They really should consider keeping this on the menu... I would come back more often to have this as a small bite with a few drinks!!

From Mike and Anne's South Pasadena

For our entree... we chose to stay in the "sea" mode and ordered one dish from the daily specials and the other from the regular menu: Red Snapper, which was pan-seared with Grilled Corn Grits, Chinese String Beans, Fennel in a Sun-dried Tomato Nage with Olives. I must say, I was quite impressed by the fusion of flavors the chef used... the tomato broth was bright and light, and though the fish was very fresh and cooked to perfection, this dish, actually its veggies, could stand alone as a vegetarian special, given the outstanding fusion of the veggies over the grits and the broth! Truly delicious!

From Mike and Anne's South Pasadena

Then there was the Miso-Sake Braised Black Cod.... cooked to perfection with the skin ever so crispy, it was served over a bed of Edamame, Asparagus and fused with Basil and Scallions... still sitting in some of the sake marinade... light, airy... the fish melts in your mouth at every bite! This is the perfect entree especially for those watching their waistline... but not compromising on flavor and quality!

From Mike and Anne's South Pasadena

Considering that we were already pretty full at this point... we still could not resist the offerings in the dessert menu so we went for the Chocolate!! A Warm Nutty Brownie with Hazelnuts, Pecans and Walnuts served over a bed of fresh berries and a scoop of Vanilla Ice cream... the kind of dessert that brings you to that place of appreciating all things simple, yet delicious and decadent! The tartness of the berries complimented the chocolaty goodness of this amazing little brownie!! Somehow... you could never go wrong with chocolate! (Although I will have to say... I MUST try the Brioche Bread Pudding, next time! That was really screaming "Elle-Special"!) :)

From Mike and Anne's South Pasadena

For all you Angelenos and locals... this is the perfect spot to break out of the monotony of eating out. Offering great ambiance in a nice-casual setting. Very well prepared food, wonderful fusion of textures and flavor... I will have to say, Mike and Anne's will be one of my new favorite "go to" places!

A special thank you to our server Emily, who put the "cherry-on-top" of the evening's meal, her lovely and cheerful spirit truly complemented our experience!!

Visit the website here.

Until next time....
Bon appetite mes amies!!

Elle :)

Great quality and fantastic tasting food, great prices... in the most unlikely location! Calling all Angelenos.... a fast lunch (or dinner) never tasted this good!! The place: EL PESCADO MOJADO SEAFOOD GRILL... in this case the Sunset store!

Owned by the wonderful Galvez family... El Pescado Mojado serves up traditional Mexican dishes. It is most definitely a healthier alternative to most "fast food" or family-owned restaurants in the city. A generous menu allows their customers to come back repeatedly, without having the same thing every visit!! More importantly, everything is made to order, raising the standard and level of quality!

On a lazy Sunday evening... this is the perfect "to go" option for a night in with friends if you don't feel like doing dishes... or simply don't have the time!
I did just that... and here are some of the delicious treats we got to sample that evening:

Queso Fundido... (a broiled cheese appetizer)... A must for all you cheese lovers!! Monterey Jack cheese melted.... a cheese brulee, if you will!! Gooey, oooey, cheesy goodness! Try it!

From PescadoMojado

Ceviche... one word... YUM!!! (Is that really a word? LOL).... there were two kinds... shrimp and white fish.... I preferred the white fish; they were both delicious, I just prefer white fish ceviche. Perfectly seasoned... just the right amount of citrus... hard to beat the quality and value of this ceviche!

From PescadoMojado

Pair the ceviche with some super fresh guacamole... (the real kind... not the processed, watery stuff you get at a lot of other places!)... you will bite into the chunks of avocado... and the chips?? Freshly made here!!.... and did I mention the salsa??? This salsa brings most others to shame!!

Skewers... Chicken, Beef and Mahi... oh my! They were all flavorful... my favorite was the Mahi! Served with a delicious seasoned white rice and a side of pinto beans... the perfect meal!

From PescadoMojado

Last but not least.... Camarones a la Diabla (Spicy Devil Shrimp).... I have to confess, I was speechless! This is the kind of dish that real foodies live for... no kidding! Authentic.... as good as mom would make! This dish is five star, in my humble opinion!! Also served with white rice and beans on the side.... not the typical "fast food" order! Guy Fieri... you must come try this!!

From PescadoMojado

The great news about this family-owned business... there are three locations to choose from:

1701 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
610 S. Rampart Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
11530 Telegraph Rd., Santa Fe Springs, CA

For those of you on a wellness kick or on low carb/low fat diets... the options are the same. Most of the food is grilled...stick with those options and skip on the tortilla chips and rice. The seafood is extremely fresh... and a small indulgence with this guacamole is ok... there are no additives, and you still get all the naturally creamy goodness from an avocado! Did I say FRESH??? :)

By the way, there is something to be said about who you know... because you read about it here, Pescado Mojado is offering all ELLE LIVING readers and followers a discount on your next visit!! By the way, don't worry that this is going to be a site for only the "well to do"; on the contrary, it's for everyone, not only the "Designer-Clad Set".... Simply those with a taste for good things and decadence! (Which, by the way, could come by way of the simplest things in life... sometimes, that can show up in a Taco Truck! LOL!) I'm at the beginning stages of launching the full site and so I have yet to incorporate the other arts, but I thought that it would be great to start with something that is definitely one of my favorites and probably close to many people's hearts... Theatre!!

First, I must say that if you could call something the "little production that could"... This would be it!! I love all things "live theatre" and when a dear friend of mine insisted that I go see this production being presented in Downtown LA, I was quite taken by her enthusiasm about this "one woman" production... So, of course, I had to go see for myself!

I was not quite sure what to expect, but I know that at the end, I was definitely glad that I made it out to see this production. "Latina on the Loose" is based on the life story of Mina Olivera, her life growing up as a Latina teenager, moving from country to country and all the silliness/happiness/craziness that happens in between such experiences... this would include her coming to America and realizing her dreams. Mina takes you on a true roller coaster ride (the really fun and exhilarating kind) of emotions... She was funny, witty, charming and captivating! You will laugh... (a lot)... you will cry (a little - :)) and feel every emotion in between happy and heartfelt!!

It is pretty amazing when one actress is able to take you through such an experience without a supporting cast... But Mina does exactly that, in a somewhat effortless way! The performance is very well written... in a way that captivates the audience from start to finish!

I was fortunate enough to see the final production on Sunday October 11 at the Los Angeles Theatre Company, but for those of you who weren’t able to see Mina in LA, don't worry... because against all odds... “the little production that could” is going on the road and being presented in various cities. Wherever you are, I highly recommend you go and experience this lovely, heartwarming tale of a very tenacious Latina! I must say, she makes me proud of my Latin Heritage! I got the feeling that her personality is truly contagious and fun and it came out all over the place in her production. I now know why my friend Stacey was adamant that I go see this work of love!

Here are some selected pics from the production:

And, here's a short clip from the show:

Mina: thank you for sharing yourself so generously with your audience and giving yourself so wholeheartedly to your work! I applaud you and support you (as a fellow Latina)... and can’t wait to see you on Broadway!

You can follow the show and Mina on Facebook on her fan page: Latina on The Loose

Or visit her website for dates and locations!

Abrazos y besos!!

Elle ☺

Note to self... make it a point to stop over in a small town called Encinitas, CA... for the simple purpose of having a fantastic meal... but not just food... a dining experience... in a very unlikely location. Take a quaint bistro in a strip mall, throw in a very cheerful staff and a Paris trained chef... And VOILA... You have Savory Casual Fare! A delicious little bistro that calls itself casual. It’s adorable, really, but more importantly, in its simplicity, it is just delicious... in sight, sound and taste!

On a beautifully crisp and easy Sunday morning... on our way back to Orange County from a stay over in San Diego, our stopover in Encinitas turned out to be a new favorite way to spend a lazy weekend morning. Brunch at Savory is brunch unlike anything that you have ever experienced, no joke. I have never been a fan of huge buffets for two reasons: first, you overeat small portions of many selections, not really having the opportunity to savor just one or two things... and secondly, serving yourself, in my opinion, takes away from the dining experience and relishing in the company at your table because everyone is too busy going back and forth for more... exhausting, really!! But for all you brunch lovers... I have the perfect antidote... SAVORY!

A simple spread in the bar area is the beginning of your brunch experience. There were some mini croissants and mini puff pastries for the bread portion of the meal. There were the charcuteries (fresh cold cuts/cured meats), cheese plates, fresh fruits, baked fruits (this was a fruit bake), an assortment of green salads, pasta salads, and finally a freshly made egg-white frittata. Take a look at the pictures... The spread was simple, but perfect… simply lovely!!

I must make special mention about the croissants. On many an occasion, I have made a joke about how one can become a Croissant “snob” of sorts after having experienced the croissants in Paris! There is a je ne sais quoi about all Parisian pastries... especially the croissants! Just a quick aside about those Parisian croissants. They disintegrate upon touching your lips... a perfect fusion of butter and flour... unlike any other in existence... (ahh... my mouth is watering just getting present to all things Paris!)... Anyway... I must say what my lips have not uttered before... the croissants smelled and tasted peculiarly like those of Paris... only to find out that the chef at Savory is Paris-trained... and the croissants were freshly baked on the premises that morning... yes, just for brunch!! Wouldn’t you know it!! I would return just for those flaky, buttery croissants!

From Savory San Diego

So that was the beginning of the meal!! You also have the opportunity to order a hot entrée... This is what made this brunch particularly special... you had the opportunity to sample the specialties from the kitchen, but they were made to order and served to you at your table by their warm and friendly servers! There were about eight entrees to choose from, not an easy choice... after much deliberation, our choices were finally a Goat Cheese and Granny Smith Apple quiche and a savory vegetarian crepe which was served with a tomato puree sauce on top.

The quiche was a masterpiece of flavors... perfect texture and flavor... flaky crust... simply delicious! The tartness of the green apples gave this entrée a brightness and splash of flavor! For all quiche lovers... a must try!

From Savory San Diego

The crepe was just amazing... it was filled with kombucha squash, red cabbage, spinach and chanterelle mushrooms... it was topped with Swiss cheese and a tomato puree. I am a huge fan of crepes, all varieties, really... and though from time to time savory crepes are topped with a sauce of sorts, I must say that the tomato puree in this case, was totally unnecessary for my taste. It made the crepe seem like more of an Italian dish, and not being a big fan of thick sauces... I would have preferred the dish sans the sauce. On the other hand, I thought that maybe a cilantro or fresh herb/citrus infused sauce might have brightened up the dish more, it also might have brought out the flavors of the delicious fresh vegetables in the crepe. All in all, the choice of fresh grilled veggies was perfect. I would; however, order it next time with the sauce on the side or no sauce at all.

From Savory San Diego

I highly recommend this perfect little bistro (despite the tomato sauce!)... just a hiccup, really! The quality of the food is amazing and the value ($23.00 p/p for brunch) is deliciously easy on the wallet!

I highly encourage all my OC friends to go for that relaxing drive on Sunday morning and stop over in Encinitas for this fantastic brunch... it's truly a treat! I can’t wait to return and try their dinner menu, which I have heard is wonderful. Very cute, eclectic eatery... looks like something straight from the “Boot”. The food is Neapolitan Cuisine, and though I have yet to visit Naples, every bite was so authentic (at least to the Italy that I know) and it took me back to the Italy that I was fortunate enough to experience... Delicious and savory!!

First, we ordered a glass of an amazing red wine from Montepulciano, Tuscany! It took me right back to a lovely osteria in Arezzo that I had dinner in...(sigh!)...
It was a flavorful full-bodied wine through and through, made with the Sangiovese grape. Antica offers a modest wine list, but because they have great varieties from Italy... go with the Italian... you can get the Merlot anytime!

For starters, two pièces de résistance. First, there was the Arancino di Riso, very similar to the Roman Suppli, which in essence is a savory risotto ball that is mixed with cheese or a variety of flavorings and flash fried to create a fantastic and decadent treat, the one that we had that night was filled with mushrooms and peas... so good!! Probably not the healthiest choice... but certainly worth the splurge! This variety offered at Antica was the family size, easily shareable with four people (it is supposed to be an appetizer, after all!). It was served on a light tomato sauce... sure to be a crowd pleaser!!

From Antica Pizzeria MDR

Second, there was the Timballetto di Maccheroni!! On paper it was probably not the first thing you would want to try... but when in Antica... ordering this is a must!! It's a puff pastry filled with spaghetti, sausage meat, peas and cheese! I know, it doesn’t sound that great... but trust me... you won’t be sorry!! DELISH!! This too, can be shared with at least four people... Small portions, people!! ☺

From Antica Pizzeria MDR

So many great pizzas... What to choose???

We went with two pizzas, both bianca... which in essence are, pizzas minus the traditional tomato sauce. The first was Pizza Bianca al Prosciutto... this was served with buffalo mozzarella cheese, fresh arugula and fresh prosciutto! I was transported back to Italy and did not want to return! Your taste buds will will dance with this one... drizzle a bit of extra virgin olive oil on it for a fresh, crisp bite... So good! You’ll want to call me and thank me! ☺

From Antica Pizzeria MDR

The second pizza was Pizza al Cafone; which had italian sausage and broccoli rabe! I know it sounds strange to have broccoli on pizza... Live a little... walk on the wild side a bit... your taste buds will thank you!! Very much worth the try... and for you parents out there, great way to get the kiddies to eat their veggies!! ☺

From Antica Pizzeria MDR

I think our eyes were bigger than our stomachs because we ordered two appetizers and two pizzas, and for two people this is a lot of food! If you don't mind taking the leftovers home... order two pizzas so that you can sample the varieties!! You won’t be sorry!

All in all... Eating at Antica Pizzeria is a great experience! The staff is lovely and very attentive. The prices are easy on the wallet, and there was no compromise on quality, ambiance or flavor! Truly authentic, right down to the deli cases in the front of the restaurant, it just feels like Italy... And the taste... makes me want to jump on a plane to go right back!

Visit them at www.anticapizzeria.net... (make it a date night… there is a movie theater right next door and the marina is a stone’s throw away!)

Buon Appetito!!

I am taking into consideration a few prime factors... It’s summer... many of us crave fresh ingredients... we want quick meals that won’t require being over a hot stove for a long time... healthy, in an effort to stay on track with our fitness routines... and by all means delicious... because, really? What is the point of eating something if it doesn’t taste good, right?

So staying on the same page with a recipe that I recently posted for a healthy breakfast wrap; this is the dinner version of that! It is great for all you vegetarians out there... but for those of you who want something a bit heartier you can certainly add some grilled or roasted chicken as well! Personally, I love this for its nutritious value and has been a crowd pleaser each time I have served it up for friends.

From Healthy Dinner

Ingredients:

1 serving of canned Trader Joe’s Organic Pinto beans (A can is about 2 1/2 servings)
1 Sprouted wheat tortilla (I prefer Food for Life – Ezequiel 4:9 brand)
1 tbsp. of cheese (any kind you have handy)
1/2 an avocado
5 slices of tomato
1 handful of mixed greens or baby spinach
A Hot Sauce
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Heat the beans in a medium sauce pan for about 5 mins (I dispose of 1/2 the water so that they are not too watery); mashing with a potato masher... until they come to a boil. (Mashing the beans really gives the illusion they are refried… but because we are not frying them... they are still healthy!).

Warm the tortilla, about 30 seconds on each side... be careful, as overheating may cause the tortilla to get dry and tough. Line the middle with cheese (I love goat cheese because it gives the dish a “bite” of sorts, but any shredded white cheese works). Spoon the beans over the cheese so that the heat from the beans causes the cheese to melt. Season with hot sauce, to taste. Line the tomatoes and avocado wedges alongside the beans; season with salt and pepper. Top with the greens and sprinkle with a good serving of extra virgin olive oil and then sprinkle again with some fresh pepper. Fold over and cut in half.

Serves 1

Of course, you can throw in other favorites if you wish. Sometimes I mix black beans with the pinto and that makes for a delicious fusion!! Another note... I choose to use canned beans, as I don’t normally cook a family portion pot of beans because they spoil quickly. I have found that using canned organic beans, is the next best thing to homemade; however, if you have the homemade beans, more power to you!

Remember... there are no rules here... the thing to keep in mind is fresh ingredients and keeping everything healthy!

This wrap is a great alternative to fast food! Ironically it is fast, meaning it does not take long in the kitchen at all, and you can prepare it in minutes. It is healthy and costs a lot less per serving, whether you are cooking for just yourself or the entire family! Even though I said this is the dinner version of the healthy breakfast wrap, it is actually great for both lunch or dinner... and most importantly... it is flavorful and very satisfying!!

I am a true stand for your well-being and I salute you all for choosing the healthier alternatives!

Bon appetit, my friends!

Elle

Whatever happened to just walking in to a great pizza place? Well, of course those places are still around for “ordinary” pizza… but if you are one with a more discriminating palate, then you had better get on that phone and make plans for next month! Ladies and gentlemen… May I present to you Pizzeria Mozza (641 N. Highland Ave., Los Angeles, CA)?! A pizzeria like you have never encountered before!! (I promise!) … Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali and Joseph Bastianich come together with their prodigious talents and culinary wherewithal to bring you this quaint establishment on the corner of Melrose and Highland (its sister restaurant Osteria Mozza right next door on the Melrose side).

Quite the buzzing place this is… busy with a melting pot of foodies waiting to take that first bite… and let me tell you… waiting a month is so worth it!

Allow me to first make mention that they have quite the wine list… all wines from Italy. So for those of you who are not quite familiar with Italian varieties, your best bet is to try the wines by the glass, and ask the bartender for suggestions. I happened to be accompanied by the expert of all things Italian, so I didn’t have to worry about what to order…I just drank the selection handed to me! Lucky girl that I am!

For starters we went with a glass of Reggiano Lambrusco - a light red wine that opens up ones appetite… so clearly best as an aperitif. We later enjoyed Quattro Mani's take on Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico Rubrato… Both wonderful wines and complementary to our fantastic meal.

The chef sent out a complimentary appetizer, if you will. It’s called Arancini di Riso, which in essence is a ball of rice mixed with cheese and fried… accompanied by a Marinara dipping sauce… delicious! What a great start to what would turn out to be quite the remarkable meal!

From Pizzeria Mozza

For an additional appetizer we chose the FRIED SQUASH FLOWER (one of Christine’s favorites and her request!). Though this may sound a bit unusual to some, this is quite the culinary delicacy. Clearly an edible flower, the chef stuffs this delicate veggie with ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, seasons it with warm spices including nutmeg, then rolls it in rice flour and finally flash fries it! That is a bite of WOW! But be careful it is served scorching hot (BTW, how I love my food)… but don’t bite into it too quickly, I actually burned my tongue! (Don't worry... I got over the pain quite quickly! LOL) … A definite “must try”! (Good call, Chris!)

From Pizzeria Mozza

So I realize that we were at a pizzeria… and “when in Rome, you do as the Romans”… so the thing to do would be to order pizza, right? Well, I didn’t seem to think so! My senses drifted when I became aware of one of the night’s specials LAMB STRACOTTO. This is basically a slow-cooked lamb… literally! It is cooked all day and results in an extremely tender meat that melts off the bone! I am a huge fan of lamb, and given the prodigies in the kitchen who created this, I had to try it! (Of course, I figured I could try what everybody else was having! LOL) I was very pleased with my choice and a definite “must try” for those of you lamb lovers!! It was served on a bed of polenta…and can I just say? YUM!

From Pizzeria Mozza

Everyone else was pretty set on ordering the food du jour, PIZZA! So here are the table choices:

Mark (@buenospot): Speck (which is a ham similar to Prosciutto), Buffala Mozzarella, olive tapenade and oregano. This pizza is truly “to die for”! The flavors of the toppings fuse to create an unbelievable mouthful! And the crust, lest I forget, light, airy and flaky (the only “GOOD” kind of “FLAKY”! LOL)

From Pizzeria Mozza

Christine: OK… this may sound like the most absurd choice in toppings (because that is what I thought when she ordered it! LOL) … all I can say: OMG!!! Fried egg, bacon, Yukon Gold potatoes and Bermuda onions graced the top of this creation! Absolutely delicious!! Sounds like breakfast… but quite frankly could be the perfect meal at anytime of the day! Made for an excellent dinner!

From Pizzeria Mozza

Jonathan: Pizza Alla Benno was Mr. Logan’s choice! (and a great choice at that!) … this was Hawaiian pizza on steroids! Speck, pineapple, jalapenos, mozzarella and tomato topped this masterpiece! Actually… if there is such a thing as Hawaiian pizza in heaven; this is exactly how it’d be prepared! LOL! (Yes! It was that good!) …Sadly, I think we were all so preoccupied having “a Party” in our mouths… that we forgot to take a picture of Jonathan’s pizza! Shucks! I think we will have to go back to reorder it and post the picture! LOL

You would think that we were too full to order dessert after everything I just described?

Not this bunch!

We couldn’t resist the options so we decided to order two different desserts and share. I have never been the biggest fan of custard desserts, though I do have a weakness for the occasional well prepared Crème Brulee, I don’t normally opt for that type of dessert. Mark, being familiar with all things authentically Italian, as he has spent quite a bit of time in that country, insisted that we try the Panna cotta. This is in fact Italy’s version of a crème brulee, if you will. It was served with homemade almond clusters on the side and topped with fresh berries! Words cannot describe the amazing flavors in this concoction! It was truly decadent and worth every bite! I could only hope they have that available the next time I visit!

From Pizzeria Mozza

The second dessert was an assortment of the fresh gelatos they make here. A scoop of Espresso, one of Hazelnut and the other, an Italian favorite, Stracciatella. Garnished with a fresh waffle cone… for you gelato lovers… absolutely delicious… a staple dessert!

From Pizzeria Mozza

The evening was quite the charming one… amazing food, wonderful company and ever-interesting conversation! Four great friends; four true foodies at a pizzeria… but a pizzeria like no other! If at any given point you thought that CPK was as “gourmet” a pizza as you ever needed to try… that’s ok for a quick “mall” lunch… but the true gourmet pizza is on the corner of Highland and Melrose and you may have to wait a month to sink your teeth into it… but you’ll quickly get over the wait when you experience this genius food! As a matter of fact, I’d suggest you start dialing for that reservation!

Buon Appetito!!

Elle
