I had a wonderful camping holiday! Three nights is much better than two, because it gives a person two full days to explore. That feels like a far longer time than one full day. Twice as long, you see! After my lovely holiday, there was the drive home. Now, to a Canadian and maybe also to an American, 290km does not seem like a long journey. In fact, it is not nearly halfway across the mighty province of British Columbia. I've heard that to Europeans, this seems impossibly tedious.

Regardless, by the time I got home my back was a bit achey. Within three minutes of hopping out of the truck, my arm was bleeding. I caught it on the trailer tongue latch, you see. The propane tank was nestled in its Dairyland milk crate inside the tent trailer and needed to be removed. But I was lazy and didn't feel like cranking up the tent. So I opened the door and crawled into the 2'x2.5' space, bumping my head on the reverse side of the bunk bed. Wait, it gets better! Holding the tank only and not its crate, the crate slipped off the bottom and took a small chunk of flesh out of my ankle as payment for its rough treatment. And then I cut myself making dinner. Luckily I had some wine on hand that helped the (minor) pains fade to the background while I watched a weirdly interesting show on the Royal pets.

Camping: The Finale

Tomorrow we get in our trusty new-to-us truck (his name is Frank) and trundle our way towards Merrit, BC. Looks pretty nice, eh? it is! It's a desert climate, which is nice, but not quite as hot as Osoyoos, which is even nicer. I'm looking forward to kayaking around the lake some more and sipping beers on the beach with my man. We might even make some new friends! It's always fun to chat with random folks at the campground. Because everyone is in vacation mode, there's a lot more relaxed banter to be had than in town on a regular work day.

This will be our last planned outing of the summer. We may get out again in early September, depending on the weather. Camping without school children around is more peaceful, after all! But overall I think I've had a lovely summer of it. I'm not really ready for winter, but somebody keeps telling me how many Fridays are left until Christmas and that number is shrinking at an alarming rate!

I'm living in the present, finally! (A brief Windows10 Review)

I've moved on out of the past, clouded by my rose-tinted love for Windows 7, and as of yesterday I'm working in the new and thrilling world of WIndows 10. Ok, so it's not quite that drastic a change. This is good. I didn't really want a life altering experience. In fact, this is just enough change. A quick review, based on my limited experience so far:

The Pretty
I love the start menu tiles. The layout customization is perfect!
The apps are pretty neat. Not as comprehensive in choice as the Apple store, of course, but I see the potential.
The ability to calibrate ClearText for each monitor is fabulous. My eyes are dancing with joy!
The snap-to edges finally works in dual monitor mode!
Logging in with just a PIN is great!
Dual monitor panoramic theme goodness!

The Ugly
The start menu tiles seem to re-order themselves a bit randomly after sleeping. This will probably be fixed in future.
You have to dig into the settings to really make it not phone home so much. MS really wants to "learn a lot about you." Like, a LOT.
Recently visited folders appear in your Quick Access panel until you turn that off. Turn that off. Go ahead, I'll wait.
Cortana doesn't work in Canada. I guess her English isn't good enough? I'd like to think this is due to our privacy laws, but it probably has more to do with localization.
The settings menu crashed a lot until I restarted a few times. Now it seems to be behaving.

The best part? All of my software acts normally. The worst part about upgrading an OS is usually the associated pain of updating the other software I use. Not so in this case! Everything seems to be peachy so far.

So far, so good, Microsoft!

You can call me old school or just plain old, but I have fond memories of building custom menus for my programs in DOS 6. I could choose to boot into WIndows 3.1.1 NT if I wanted, but the fun stuff was usually in DOS. I even read the 400 page book that came with DOS! Hah!

Since then I've had the pleasure of using:

WIndows ME (goddamn fucking stupid thing came loaded on a laptop)

And today I am going to install Windows 10. We've come a long way, baby. Microsoft, don't fail me now.

I mean the contract is pretty simple "We'll give you internet access if you give us fifteen quid a month", not "We'll give you some completely arbitrary subset of internet access that a moralising tosser in a cupboard approved for four year olds, if you give us a fifteen quid a month". Had that been the contract I wouldn't have signed up would I?

I'm going to take a wild guess that if I paid them twelve quid next month and included a patronising little message that I don't think they're mature enough to spend fifteen but maybe if they ask their parents they can have the rest, they wouldn't consider that acceptable, would they?

But of course when the corporation is the one shitting in the individual's cornflakes that's absolutely fine and we should just suck it up.

Nobody should pay these jokers, let it be known loudly and widely, they arbitrarily take away the service you're paying for, their support is literally less than useless, everything about them is dripping with contempt for their paying customers. Awful, awful company, awful broken product, awful incompetent customer service, awful of every single level, I beg anybody reading this who has the chance to not pay BT, to not do so. If I can persuade a single person to not pay these bellends it will be worth it."

Seriously! I was breakfasting (yes, it's a verb now) on my deck in the sunshine this morning when my eyes fell on a white lump underneath my sun lounger. Moving the chair aside, I realized it was the very end of a large, white candle that had been allowed to burn down completely. The deck around it had gone greasy from the melted wax. Now, I have a very, very creaky deck and a yappy dog. The only time this could have happened was on the weekend, while we were away visiting parents on the Island. It looks like some stupid kids had huddled on our deck, just out of reach of the motion-sensor security light, and light a candle to get high to.

Do they not realize we are in a drought situation? Who in their right minds lights a candle and then leaves it to burn down completely on a cedar deck attached to a log cabin, surrounded by a dry cedar hedge? I knew we had some idle teenagers causing trouble in town this summer, but this is too far. We missed coming home to a pile of ashes by a stroke of good luck.

The neighbours have been notified, and we are going to let the police know to increase their patrols of the area. Oh, it just makes me sick to my stomach with worry. We're going camping next week, so hopefully the neighbours will be able to look in on things for us. This was supposed to be my stress-free week! Arg!

Summer is such a busy time, but I'm not complaining! It seems every night there's a bbq, or a concert, or a mini-trip, or chores in the yard to do. In fact, this year I haven't planted any vegetables at all for the first year in many. I'm glad I never got around to it for two reasons: the drought this year would have made keeping everything happy very difficult and I really don't have the time to appreciate the puttering a vegetable garden requires.

This weekend we have two friends' birthday dinners to attend plus visit a friend who bought a new-to-him boat and wants us to come see it. Next weekend we are heading to the Island to visit the in-laws and leave our doggy behind for a visit. The week after that, we have a camping trip planned to a place where dogs aren't allowed. I will miss my pooch, but it will be much easier relaxing in the lake without either the dog crying on shore because I'm so far away or worrying about her being too hot inside the trailer in 35C heat.

And now to use up the rest of my Saturday afternoon working on my Monday update. Because I kind of didn't use my time wisely this week. I kind of got distracted with my other, non-Elli job. Oy.

Another year older

Yours truly is now +1 year. I don't feel older, though. I mean, if I think about the number too long, then yes, I do start to feel slightly ancient. Does this make me look fat?

I'm seriously wondering! I've noticed over the past two years that certain people I meet have a default compliment when they see me: "Have you lost weight? You look great!" On the face of it, this seems to be a lovely thing to say to someone. But the truth of the matter is that, other than a brief stint when my running and swimming was actually making me lose a few scant pounds, I have maintained weight incredibly well. This leaves me with three possible conclusions to draw: the first is that I am wearing progressively more slimming clothing every time they see me. The second and more likely conclusion is that I am more roly-poly in their memories of me and seeing me in person corrects this view and they are made to think I have lost weight.

Why are people thinking of me as pudgier than I actually am? Do I dress that badly? This problem warrants some thought!

Of course the last conclusion I could draw is that these people have the same compliment that they pay to everyone and they don't realize that repeated uses can make a person wonder.

Today's Moral of the Story: compliment someone on something immediately within their control, like their clothing or humour or a talent or skill. Do not compliment on weight unless it has changed drastically for the better recently. And please try to change up your compliments, especially for a single person over several meetings.

A Girl Walks into a Movie Review...

On Friday night I watched "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night." It's a film bankrolled by VICE, directed by an Iranian woman, and shot in California.

TL;DR: "A Girl" is a thoughtful, slow burn vampire movie.

The movie attempts to channel black and white existenalist French movies in its questioning of life and death, lightness and darkness by focussing on a lonely and very modern (read: hipster) female vampire. She lives in a basement apartment in "Bad City," which appears to be a metaphor for any slum anywhere. Her life becomes entangled with that of a young man looking to escape the frustrations of the city. She seems drawn by his vulnerable humanity and simple trust in her wordless stare. She is a vamp with compassion and a concience. And that's it. There's no real ending to the story, just as there is no real beginning. It's posited as a snapshot of her life. We don't know where she goes afterwards or even if she goes very far.

I think watching the movie made me want to seek out some of those French classics. Sure, the movie is a little amateurish in its refusal to answer certain questions and in its long, long thought-provoking (sometimes) shots. But overall I would call it a nice, tidy attempt at a Middle Eastern vampire story. Check it out if you're into that kind of thing. :)

That was a fun weekend that just passed by. On Frday we didn't do too much, but on Saturday we went to a friend's house for a bbq.
