(To the dog park, of course!)

I like to visit the dog park.

You're welcomed immediately by all the top dogs

We all look different

There are plenty of things to sniff

Sometimes I really put my nose into it

and my nose gets dirty

You can throw the tennis ball, but I'd rather follow you around

Say, can we go again?

It's more fun that the flu and you can win prizes too!

I'm not kidding with you. I signed up for twitter and have lots of new pup pals and two prizes from #barkhunt.

So right now go to my twitter page and follow me. My username is Elliethebeagle.

I like to keep things simple. I'll wag my tail while you sign up.

Of course non-canine friends (both humans and feathered/furry animals) are welcome to follow me too.

Twitter is sharing 140 character snippets of your day whenever you choose. You can also send a photo from your cellphone to twitpic & have it appear as a link on your twitter page.

So come join my pack and we can play barkhunt. Barkhunt is a scavenger hunt for dogs on twitter. And when you talk about #barkhunt on twitter you put a hashtag # (aka the pound sign # in front of #barkhunt). Tell fellow pup pal & twitterer @askspikeonline that I told you about the #barkhunt If you win something I'll get a point too.

Got it? Go check out the Barkhunt rules and Barkhunt additional ways to win.

I will relax on the sofa while you salivate over the prizes.

Last week I won two prizes for being the first to locate the answers to those two questions on twitter. See me enjoying the Omega3 prize (goes on food) and the glucosamine & chondroitin (chicken flavored chew) from @troyjunior and ilovedogs.com

I first heard about #barkhunt from @VAStateParks

and you know how I love the parks in Virginia
Uno is likely a long distance cousin (aren't we all related in the dog world?), but the more my bipeds look at me, the more they think I have some Harrier, or English Foxhound. Have any of you had the canine genotype or other dog DNA test? I heard the bipeds discussing it, but Eric said it is too expensive for this hound. Maybe he'll come around if a place in the top 500 of the Human Society Spay Day USA 2008. Judith submitted my mug for the contest and has been shouting it out to the world. (And yes, I am wearing a lei in the picture). After watching the kids limbo, I took a nap in the grass. I woke up when I caught a whiff someone eating meatballs. I opened my eyes to see the father of the birthday girl. When he realized he had my attention, he skewered a tasty morsel and practically dangled it in front of my nose! Had it not been for the moment of just awakened grogginess, that meatball would have been mine! After that I stayed near the girls, away from kitty G. (she wasn't thrilled that I was hanging out in her territory). I had fun chasing a flying dinosaur that Olivia was commanding, but Judith's camera ran out of batteries so there isn't proof to document the fun. I think that was my hunting gene kicking in. Yvonne was a wonderful hostess and even had a dog appropriate snack (dog bone) for me. I ate the bone this morning. Everyone was really nice to me and I got to enjoy a restful, but enjoyable afternoon. My humans tell me that my birthday celebration will be arranged soon. They have determined that I am five. I say that age doesn't matter, I like parties. Don't you? Tell me what you've done to celebrate your birthday.

Dogs this way

There weren't other dogs at the welcome center on this visit. When I come along for the ride (and how could I not?) we stop at nearly every welcome center and half a dozen rest areas. Next road trip I'll make a note of the rest areas we liked and the ones we didn't. Most of the time the places for dogs were in the back and did not have grass. Or if there was grass, there were no trees for shade. Hello! We like grass for our business. Trash bins nearby would be helpful for the humans; otherwise we're making giant loops around the buildings or racing through areas where we're not really supposed to be...(i.e., picnic). A doggy fountain like they have at the parks at home would be nice too. Although I did get bottled water from the humans. Nice and cold on a hot day. I tend not to eat much on the road. What is your favorite road trip snack?

Dog gone tired (both of us)

Here Eric and I are taking a much needed nap after driving for hours and hours in the car to Georgia. Judith and Eric have been taking good care of me (though they're calling themselves mommy and daddy on occasion and that's a little strange, as they are my humans). I still haven't figured out how to put comments back on after trying out the blogger in beta. I tried to get the resident cat at the vet's office to blog for me, but you can't trust those cats...I learned to bay at the vet and my humans couldn't believe that I learned how to talk (yet they are mystified at my ability to blog). I couldn't find an easy way to sit at the computer so I had to communicate my needs verbally (or is that audibly?). Judith's mom (now she's "grandma"?!?) sent a giraffe and the humans gave me a little dog. And yes, I do think she looks a little like me with the new shade. I wonder if she'll be wearing a red jacket soon too. I get lots of comments on my Old Navy sherpa, but I'm usually on the move for bones under bushes so it gets dirty after one walk. I haven't figured out the laundry concept yet, but if I nose the blankets and animals away from my bed (or the couch) and sniff loudly, my humans get the hint. Eventually.

Day After Snow

Ellie the Beagle braving the slush and mush

Monday's Beagle News-Issue 5

Happy New Year humans and dear pawed friends!

How we can help humans with their New Year's Resolutions

Let them know that they can shed pounds by walking with us more often. Apparently plastic wrap absorbs odors, so I thought I was eating food on the ground outside. While I was at the emergency vet, I saw another dog that was ill from eating fruit chew gummy candies that were meant for human consumption only. I hope everyone had a Happy Turkey Day and sneaked at least one bite of turkey away from your humans. Last week I took an unexpected vacation, for a road trip with Judith & Eric to Atlanta. That means I got to see human grandparents and was nearly spoiled with treats. Mmm...and with that thought, we have the news.

Nope, the dog didn't do it
A Cat in Brazil did not have puppies. Anyone with canine sense can look at that picture and see that the dog Dog (okay, so her human wasn't that creative) knows that something is fishy. According to the geneticist Adil Pacheco in Brazil, if you have 78 chromosomes you are a dog and 38 you are a cat.

Dad?
And speaking of DNA, the American Kennel Club has a DNA testing program to verify parentage. I can't wait until we can connect dogs around the world through genes and history like people might be able to do with the AncestryByDNA program.

Are you licensed?
Researchers in Ohio have determined that a failure to license a dog is a potential warning sign of other deviant behavior. Almost a third of humans, who failed to license their canine (of a high-risk for agression breed) were more likely to have traffic citations or criminal convictions.
Beagles (terriers, collies and poodles) were the most frequent low-risk breeds in the study. See? Tough humans do need gentle pups.

Where is that McGruff
Speaking of canine aggression, two unleashed pitbulls attacked a man and his son's Beagle Sammy in Pennsylvania. Sammy needed staples and is uncomfortable, but we wish him a full recovery (and lots of attention). Joni, the termite hunter Beagle, was stolen in Ballina, Australia. Her human employer and mate is offering a $1,000 reward. Stetson the beagle is lost in Maine near Gloucester. Earlier this week Judith posted pictures of the fall garden. Her mom helped her plant the garden when I came to live at their house in September (yes, I know it's technically a condo, but beagles in the city, can't be choosy). Judith exclaimed, "What on earth happened?" As soon as she asked, we were on our way to investigate the case of the missing cabbage head. The hound in me can't resist tracking a scent. Judith thought maybe the grocery sacks from the PeaPod delivery last night might have accidentally bumped the cabbage, but Eric assured her that everything was fine during the delivery. I agreed with Eric. I sniffed the grocery sacks thoroughly last night and didn't pick up the scent of the deliveryman on the cabbage. And my nose is pretty accurate. Our first clue that was a cabbage vandal was the cabbage leaf in a nearby front yard. Our next clue was the matching purple cabbage leaf a few yards ahead.
And when I saw this next one on the sidewalk , I knew we were getting closer. We crossed the parking lot and I pulled hard to the right (sometimes you just have to let those bipeds know what they missed) when I spotted something in the same purple hues near the curb. It was upside-down, but the root break appeared to be a match. Instead of leaving the ornamental cabbage head across the complex, Judith carried it back and put it back in the garden. I could sense that our morning walk was pretty much over now. Those garden vandals! Eric thinks it was kids playing a prank. What if it was a neighbor gardener jealous of the fall color. Nah...they would have dug it up properly. Tell me what you think happened.

Monday's Beagle News - Issue 2

Welcome to the Second issue of Monday's Beagle News.

Picture of the Week

Yes, that's me. Two examples of why dogs are the best were featured on the show: a skateboarding bulldog (I think the YouTube video is the same bulldog) and a jump roping Australian Shepherd. I must be very special because I got a new sweater. It's big and warm and grey. Judith said she was going to knit me something, but I know she didn't knit this one. I was at PetSmart when she found it. Eric laughed while Judith held two sweaters up to my nose and asked me if I liked the gray sweater or the blue sweater. I already have a blue sweater so I went with the gray one, by putting my nose up to it to let them know. I think I'll take a nap now before we go out for the afternoon walk.

Happy Howl-o-ween

Judith gets tickled every time that I touch my nose with my tongue. Look at her laugh. We didn't go out trick-o-treating (my leg was still hurting and Judith didn't feel that great), but we gave out candy to the neighborhood kids and Judith talked to the neighbors. Judith let me know about Olivia and Leah before the party, but I was a little overwhelmed. Leah talked to me on the couch for a long time and I eventually settled down.
