Diese Fixierung verbindet den im Gangland von L.A. aufgewachsenen Autor mit James Ellroy, dem dunklen Fürsten des desillusionierten Copdramas. Wie schon bei Ayers Skript zu "Dark Blue" war Ellroy in die Entwicklung von "Street Kings" involviert, den Ayer nun selbst inszenierte. Mehr noch als im Vorgänger agieren die Cops, die "Street Kings", im rechtsfreien Raum - selbst das institutseigene Kontrollorgan bedient sich ähnlicher Mittel, wenn auch aus anderen Motiven. Im Fokus des Films steht Detective Ludlow (Keanu Reeves), der abends zuerst nach dem Wecker, dann aber schon nach der Waffe greift. Der Reflex eines "Shooters", der sich nur an die Kugel, nicht die Vorschriften hält, später im Alleingang eine Wohnung stürmt und die Justiz arbeitslos macht. Am Ende sind zwei verschleppte Mädchen befreit und vier koreanische Gangster in der Pathologie. Während sein Mentor (Forest Whitaker), Chef einer Spezialeinheit, ihn immer wieder deckt, hat ihn di "Internal Affairs" längst im Visier. Als sein Ex-Partner als deren Spitzel enttarnt wird, sieht Ludlow rot, gerät in eine Schießerei mit Ladendieben, die dem Maulwurf das Leben kostet. Dass es sich dabei um eine Hinrichtung handelt, deren Auftraggeber Polizeimarken tragen, durchschaut Ludlow später als mancher Zuschauer, der das Genre oder die Kultserie "The Shield" kennt. Eine Intensitätsbremse ist das jedoch nicht, denn elektrisiert jagt Ludlow jetzt die Mörder, bis sie und die Drahtzieher Gerechtigkeit durch die Kugel erfahren und sich am Ende auch die Saubermänner die Hände schmutzig machen. "Street Kings" ist nicht subtil, lotet die Grauzonen nicht so aus, wie das etwa "Colors - Farben der Gewalt" gelang. Gewissensprüfung findet nur ansatzweise statt. Die einen töten, um sich zu bereichern, die anderen, um den blockierenden Rechtsstaat zu umgehen. Reeves überzeugt mit überraschender Explosivität als Antiheld einer Geschichte, die ihre bekannten Erzählmuster mit Spannung, packender Action und einem konsequent ernüchternden Ton vergessen lässt.
