We’re starting our third week of the Go Green Get Fit Challenge.  I am not doing that great….. I started the Whole 30 about a week before the challenge started.  I made it almost 3 weeks, but then I “fell off the plan” and once that happened, well one thing led to another.

Arghhhh I am so mad at myself about this so I slipped for about 3 days and now I’m back on the Whole 30.  My big downfall… I went to a party and had a glass of red wine and then another and then my food plan slipped and it just threw me off completely.  For me it’s very hard to moderate once I slip.  Usually when this happens I just give up and forget about it… but not this time.

I’m back on the plan and feeling more resolved than ever to do the Whole 30 so for me, I’m starting over.

The grass pollen has pretty much subsided so I took a short bike ride today, about 2.5 miles.  Not a huge thing but, the first 1.25 miles of it were all uphill.  I live in a great place to walk out the door and go for a ride in the “country” so that’s what I did.  I can’t tell you how just this small amount of movement changed the way I felt for the rest of the day.

I can feel my energy moving, my hear feels different, there is just something about moving your body that makes you body chemistry feel totally different.  It’s a good feeling, like your heart is operating better, you can just feel the difference, even with this short bike ride.

My goals really have not changed.  Eat on the Whole 30 plan and either walk or take a ride at least 5 days a week.

This is me on my bike, lol it’s kind of hard to take a “self” picture and get the whole bike in, but you get the idea.

This is the road I rode my bike up, and then down.  I feel so lucky that I can just walk out my door and ride in an area like this. I live very close to the Eugene city limits so it’s a great place to live and to get outside (when it’s not raining).

This is a short and quick update for the end of week 1 of the Go Green Get Fit Challenge.

We’ve just finished up our first week on the Go Green Get Fit Challenge.  My plan to eat on the Whole 30 has been moving along well.  I actually started on this about a week before the official start date for the challenge.  So for me it’s been two weeks of eating on the Whole 30.

I’ll be honest, I don’t necessarily think I’m losing weight but, part of the Whole 30 is not to focus on the weight thing, so I have not weighed myself or taken any measurements, because, I’m reminding myself, my focus is on eating better and I am eating better.  For two weeks I have had, no grains, no sugar, no alcohol (almost, I did have one glass of red wine when I was out to dinner one night), no dairy…. and no chocolate in the form of candy with sugar.  I have eaten a few raw cocao nibs, but not quite the same as chocolate in the form of candy, with sugar….

What I have been eating, is primarily meat, vegetables and some, a very limited amount of fruit.  I have had a few times when I really wanted something sweet and instead I ate a few dried apricots or some raisins…. amazingly enough this really worked and took away my sweet craving.

One thing I have noticed, I do have more energy and I’m not having my late afternoon slump.  So, I’m moving ahead, one week at a time.  Next week I plan to start walking as the grass pollen season is winding down soon… usually around or after July 4th, the grass pollen season ends and then I can be outside again without going crazy in the pollen.

I used to be very active.  I was a “tom boy” / “jock” growing up as a kid.  I swam on a swim team, I was a competitive downhill skier, I started the first women’s soccer league in Albuquerque, NM (oh so many years ago), I played softball, I did gymnastics, I even ran track, I was jock.  I was constantly playing some type of sport or camping and hiking.  This type of thing continued all through my childhood and early adult life…. until I had kids.

While having kids and raising a family is no excuse for letting oneself go, it seems that’s what I did.  I have been active off and on over the years but never in the same way I was when I was younger.  Before I had my family, I worked as a Forester on a large national forest.  I would hike up and down hills, fight forest fires and spend a lot more time outdoors than I do now.

Now I work full time running the office (sitting at a desk all day) with my husband who is a Financial Planner, I have an online business  (ElyOrganics.com), I play in a marimba band (Zambuko) and I seem to always be putting taking care of myself behind everything else.  I’ve been way to sedentary, because I work at a desk all day and all night.  I know I need to get  moving and I think starting small is the best way for me to make the changes I need and really incorporate them into my life.

My kids are grown, almost, I have a 22 year old son who just graduated from college and an 18 year old daughter who just graduated from High School and will be leaving in the fall to go to college.  The shock of empty nest syndrome is beginning to hit me… but what I am finding is, now I have some time to think a bit more about me.  Yes I need to be more active, I need to eat better, I need to get more sleep, I need to take more time for me… where do I start?

Yes that’s right, it’s time to spend some time on me… and I decided to get myself moving by joining 25+ other “green” bloggers in who will also be participating and writing about their efforts in the Go Green, Get Fit Challenge.  For 12 weeks beginning June 18, 2012 we will be sharing our ups and downs through this health and wellness challenge.  This event is part of the Sustain Your Self™ Program from EcoMom Alliance presented by Healthy Home Magazine

My focus for the challenge is around food and eating better.  I have had “issue” with my weight for many years now.

I have been eating organic and local foods for 20+ years but that has not kept me from putting on the extra pounds.  While I have tried to “control” what I eat and when I have not always been successful.  I have followed so may different ways of eating over the years, I’ve read tons about health and nutrition.  I know a lot about eating whole foods but now I’m going to put that all to use and start focusing more on the when, how and why of my eating habits/rituals.

My goal is to change the way I eat.  While yes, I want to lose weight, I am going to focus on changing the way I eat.  I have grown up with this all or nothing mentality, no gain without pain, go 150%.  This is a get “fit” challenge and most people would probably focus on some kind of physical exercise, I’m going to focus on changing the way I eat first and foremost, because “It Starts With Food“.  I’m going to bypass my all or nothing compulsion and work on one thing first, changing the way I eat.

Over the years I have become very familiar with every type of food program out there, Weston A Price foundation, South Beach, Blood Type, Paleo, Vegetarian, Raw Foods, Juicing, Detoxing, you name it I’ve at least read about it.  I’ve followed many health sites, Dr. Mercola, Mark Hyman, MD, Mark’s Daily Apple, Mike Adams Health Ranger, the list goes on.   And you ask where does this lead me?

My plan is to follow the Whole 30. I know, you’re saying the Go Green, Get Fit Challenge goes for 12 weeks so, what happens after the Whole 30?  By then, the grass pollen season should be over and I can add on my outdoor activity, which for me will be walking.  OK, I know this does not sound really energetic, but, I’m past the no gain without pain part of my life.  For me taking a brisk walk 5 days a week seems like a good start to getting myself moving again.  Taking the baby steps, so I can make lifestyle changes that last.

What I like about the Whole 30.  It seems like something I can do.  To me, it seems like a reasonable food program and it’s not a “diet” it’s not a short term fix and it’s not a temporary solution.  “We want you to use the Whole30 as a learning tool to gain awareness of how the foods you used to eat were actually affecting how you look, feel, live and perform.”

I purchased the Whole 30 Success Guide about a month ago read part of it but never implemented it.  Now, I’m going for it.  The Whole 30 makes a lot of sense to me because it’s a whole foods program.  I already believe in that, so it’s not a huge shift or huge change in the way I think.  While I am already eating a lot of what they recommend, I am also eating a lot of what they don’t recommend.  There are no grains, no legumes and no sugar or alcohol.  Those last two items, well this is where it gets challenging, because who doesn’t like to have a glass of red wine now and again… and a bit of chocolate in the late afternoon.

My Goal(s)

• Eat on the Whole 30 plan and change the way I eat
• Walk a min of 15 minutes a day at least 5 days a week
• Find a good exercise program that I can do at home
