There are lots of discussions these day about Uber drivers stealing the jobs from regular taxi drivers. I feel sorry for the taxi drivers that probably feel outdated like horses felt when cars appeared. It is only the normal, third industrial revolution, the internet revolution, and all they can do is adapt to the technology or disappear.

But the most important thing is that both categories of drivers, Uber or regular taxis, fail to read hacker.news. If they would have, at least from time to time, they would realize that all their stress is futile, and this profession as a whole is already doomed. Automatic, self driving cars are the future, they are cheaper than humans, more reliable and safer. In 20-30 years will be driving a car like we do now horse riding, probably on your own estate or in a closed circuit, as a diversion.

PS. and no more hitchhiking either.

Very good movie to watch for a Romanian, but I am not so sure if the language nuances can be properly translated in other language. For others probably is more interesting the slavery aspect, although is not as action packed as Django or as dramatic as Amistad.

For my own understanding and research I tried to explain some of the phrases from the movie. The movie is understandable by a normal Romanian speaker, but there are lots of archaic terms from which I understood about 50% and the rest I actually need to go again through the movie and, frame by frame, detect and search for them. Dexonline was my friend on this one (always is). In general there are a lot of Turkish, Greek and Slavic words, that are not used anymore.

> Si ipochimeni ăștia vii pe unde se dusese?
> Pe unde au putut, ca strigoii, pe câmpuri, pe suhaturi…

> [cei] morți și cei smreduiți de ciumă

> futu-i cleftul măsii

> fira-i a dracului de hârca

I do not have time to explain all the phrases, but maybe someone else will continue from where I left.

Such a big title and who am I to say this? This is my opinion of course and feel free to disagree.

But I have the feeling that the concept failed. For me is the need to say more than 140 chars. Twitter is a good place to throw a slogan, a comment or quickly vent some steam but is a bad place for a debate or an exchange of ideas.

Is not good for news, you are missing too much stuff that could matter. The ecosystem is not maturing. Maybe it as something to do with the lack of structure, I do remember that at the beginning I had difficulties understanding how Twitter can be useful and profitable.

So.. who it will be man to pull the plug? Or where the big successes (like digg, slashdot, etc) go to die?

And what is next?

I would allow retired people to keep working for a maximum 4 hours/day with 0 taxes while keeping their pensions coming.

Why?
Because is good for economy, for them and for the younger guys. The economy and the companies can benefit from a lower taxation on some of its employees. Maybe it has to be to a certain level, but I can also envision companies that only hire old people. Is good for them because it keeps them alert, maintains the brain functioning and gives them a social environment. Is good for younger guys that can pick knowledge from the older generation. Due to so much new tech, I think that currently people are underestimating the value of prior knowledge.

Why 4 hours only?
Because I don’t want companies to abuse them or this system.

Precedents
All human history. Is a quite recent feature that after a certain age we transform old people in vegetables in front of the TV. They are a great resource of knowledge and experience.

This movie has a very low rating on IMBD. That is not news for anybody who knows that IMBD ratings are not very related with the quality or creativity of a movie, but more with the american public perception of art. While the public considers Kill Bill to be perfectly justified and artistic violence, films like OldBoy or now Only God Forbids are too much for the sensible eyes of people who fail to understand a metaphor, a poem or a pieces of supra-realistic visual experiment. I loved the movie, found it enjoyable and found emotion in seeing it.

Just go see it and make your own opinion.

It is very clear that humans want to surpass their limits, even that our (still) conventional wisdom says that we should not. For the moment the sports in general are limiting the improvements of human bodies to legal limits. Athletes are not allowed to dope, to use performance increasing methods, prosthetics, augmentations, suits or DNA modifications. But this is not the future. The future Super Olympic games will be probably more inspired from Futurama than the Ancient Greece. And why not? Just make better drugs and safer augmentation. Aren’t we suppose to keep evolving?
