Last week we pointed out that markets were paying close attention to polling data in Greece.

Basically, any polls showing a lead for the left wing SYRIZA coalition were depressing markets, and any polls showing strength for the pro-bailout New Democracy party were being greeted positively.

In light of that, it's pretty clear that the majority of polls (which we've been tracking via the tireless Greek journalist on Efthimia Emthimiou on Twitter) are showing a lead for New Democracy.

They're not huge leads, but they don't necessarily heave to be. If New Democracy gets first place even by a hair, they get 50 extra seats in parliament (per the rules) and if New Democracy and PASOK can combine to get about 37% of the vote (up from their combined 31% last time), they should be able to cobble together a pre-bailout coalition.

The election isn't until June 17, and a lot could still affect the outcome (such as the fallout from that Christine Lagarde interview) but at this moment, things are pointing in a direction that the market likes.

Today's New York Times has a lengthy story, detailing the trader who helped bag JP Morgan's "London Whale."

If you don't know, JP Morgan recently announced that it had lost around $2 billion on some bad credit trades.  Reports surfaced that one of the players on the other side of those trades was legendary credit trader Boaz Weinstein.

The New York Times Azam Ahmed offers a lot of details on Weinstein's personal life and professional career. Some of which we knew; some we didn't.

• In 2005, he won a Maserarti at a poker tournament sponsored by a unit of Berkshire Hathaway.  He still drives it.

• His hedge fund Saba Capital, has $5.5 billion under management and his offices are located on the 58th floor of New York City's Chrysler Building.

John Browett, the new retail head at Apple, will receive at least $56 million worth of shares awarded over the course of the next five years, according to The Sunday Times.

That's on top of his annual salary, which isn't being disclosed, according to The Times.

Apple hired Browett in January to be its senior vice president of retail, replacing Ron Johnson. Johnson left to become CEO of JCPenney last year.

Browett was Tim Cook's first executive hire after taking over for Steve Jobs and reports directly to Cook.

Google+ isn't getting a lot of fair coverage in the press, says Internet guru Robert Scoble.

While a lot of the tech press has said Google+ is a "ghost town," Scoble says it's actually Twitter's started to feel more like a ghost town.

"Seriously, I know Twitter's not a ghost town, but it sure feels like that because of the usage model there," Scoble said in a post on Google+. "As it has turned into more of an "information utility" and less of a community it feels more and more empty."

Since July of last year, he's gone from 0 to 1.5 million followers on Google Plus, and 13,000 to 261,000 followers on Facebook. But he's only gone from 240,000 followers to 260,000 followers on Twitter.

He said that's because there aren't any noise controls on Twitter, so users are getting overloaded and aren't following more people.

Here are some of the highlights of his argument over on Google+:

So, what's the new social media ghost town? I say it's Twitter. Follower growth has NOT kept up there with the other services, which is telling me something. 

1. That while number of tweets have gone up, people are getting overloaded so they aren't following more people. Why is that? Because there isn't any noise controls on Twitter (Facebook's feed, on my screens, is a LOT more useful than Twitter's feeds).

2. I'm on Google+'s suggested user list, which is gifting me a huge number of followers. But I got up to 230,000 without ever being on that list here. Lots of people are signing up and at least a few ARE sticking around here.

4. Facebook juices its subscriber numbers through lists. If you get put on a list with, say, 30,000 followers, all those followers will be added to your follower count.

Last weekend I wrote about legislation sponsored by House Republican “Buck” McKeon (R.Ca) who is the head of the powerful Armed Services Committee. Buck had proposed a spending plan for the military that maintains spending on guns and ammo at the highest level in the nation's history. The proposal's spending levels are above those set by congress in last year’s Budget Control Act.

I gave the Republicans gas for coming up with such a ludicrous plan. Many readers read concluded that I was just shilling for the Democrats. In an effort at that “fair and balanced” thing, l will hack up a Democratic proposal on spending this weekend.

Senate Democrat, Debbie Stabenow (MI), head of the powerful Agricultural Committee, has come forward with her plan for spending by the US Agricultural Department (USDA). The legislation (S.3240) would put spending by the good old USAD at $969 billion over the next nine years.

A budget hasn't been approved in 1,100 days, so it’s difficult to compare the proposed spending with what has happened the past few years at the USDA. The last time a budget was seriously considered, the 2013-22 spending was $997b. So it looks like cuts of $23b have been proposed this time around. But that is just for show. The bill has supplementary provisions for “credit assistance,” “education,” and “trade promotion”. The add ons come to an extra $28B over the next decade, so what has been offered up by Senator Stabenow has no cuts at all.

It’s not that I want to cut the USDA budget to the bone. After all, they are doing such a good job of protecting the country’s food supply, right? Well, actually, they aren’t doing so well at that. The CDC spells it out:

48 million folks got sick from what they ate last year, 128k ended up in the hospital, 3,000 ended up in the morgue. This holiday weekend some 400k folks will be up puking their guts out, 3,000 will end up in a hospital, and 25 folks won’t make it till Tuesday. So if you’re planning a BBQ to celebrate Memorial Day, watch out for the rancid lamb, the salmonella salad, and the Norovirus burgers.

The real job at the USDA is protecting the farmers. You would think that the unending recession would put those hard working folks in the fields in distress. Actually that is not the case. Farmers have been doing better than the bankers the past four years. Total revenues are up 15%%, net income has risen by 8% ($92b). (link)

The real estate crisis has crushed many Americans, but not the farmers. Arable land is at the highest value in history. Prices were up 20% in both 2010 and 2012. In the past ten-years, farm land values have more than doubled:

Senator Stabenow is probably doing what she’s supposed to be doing. As the head of the Senate’s Ag Committee she’s supposed to be sucking up taxpayer money and seeing that it’s spent on the farmers she’s supposed to represent. Her home state, Michigan, is a modest player in agriculture. It’s ranked 22th, but farming is still a success story in the “Mitten.”

In Michigan, 41% of all farmers are getting checks from the USDA. Of those farmers on the dole, the top 10% are getting 71% of the handouts. (Link) No doubt this has helped the good Senator’s fund raising efforts; she’s been around for twelve years.

It being an election year, we will have more than the usual amount of political speeches this Memorial Day. Republicans and Democrats will be out there pushing the “debt/deficit” hot buttons. They will be selling a message of austerity and a return to some level of sanity with deficits.

But when you look at what the Reds and Blues actually do when they are back in D.C. drafting legislation, you'll see that that both sides of the aisle are proposing spending on their pet projects. Neither side has any interest in cutting spending. What they will be saying on the stump this weekend will sound nice, but actually they are all lying.

Don’t get too riled up about the spending bills from Buck or Diane. There is not a chance in hell that any of this will pass. We will go another 400 days without a budget. Someday we will pay a price for this.

Meet Darren Dodge, founder of About Last Night.

He and his brother Derek Dodge, both sons of tech legend Don Dodge, have built an app that's designed to be the "operating system of your night life."

It's an application designed to help you share your night life experiences and figure out what you're doing tonight.

In short, it's a young person's best friend. You can post photos and connect to others that are already looking for things to do in the evening, and figure out the most fun thing to do at the time.

We caught up with founder Darren Dodge to find out just what he's creating. Here's what we found out:

• The founding team are sons of Don Dodge, but don't let that fool you. Derek is a proficient coder and Darren has a lot of experience doing marketing, after working with Ashton Kutcher.

• This isn't the only company the Dodge boys are working on. About Last Night came up as an off-shoot of the Dodges' existing company.

• About Last Night is based in Boston, and it's quite a different pace from San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Mark Zuckerberg said himself that he would keep Facebook in Boston if he had a second chance, Darren Dodge said.

BUSINESS INSIDER: What is About Last Night and what do you guys do?

Darren Dodge: About Last Night is your social network for your night life. We allow you to share your nightlife experiences. We allow you to share your nightlife experiences, vote up experiences, follow your friends, follow celebrities. You can see what other people are doing with their night last night but also what they might be doing tonight. Very quickly you can get the relevant information from your friends, but also suggestions of where you want to go tonight and where the good bars are.

BI: Where did you guys get the idea?

DD: It was actually born out of another company we had that's still in stealth mode. It just didn't quite fit in with that company so we decided to shoot it out on its own. But we realized people are already in the rhythm of checking in on Foursquare and other apps, so we decided, why not do something that's completely centered around nightlife. That's really teh good information for people my age. We wanted to share that stuff.

BI: You guys are based in Boston, right? How does that feel compared to starting a company in San Francisco?

DD: Yes, that's right. I love Boston. I'm born and raised there, the tech scene is thriving and there are great startups. You have the best colleges in the world, some of the smartest people int he world. The venture capitalists in Boston, if you tell them you're from Boston and you want to stay in Boston, they'll immediately do what they can for you. Mark Zuckerberg said it himself, if he could go back in time and had the ability to keep his company in Boston, he would have.

It's definitely a unified startup scene. In Boston, we try to build the strongest business we can.

BI: What's your background?

DD: My Brother comes from a much more technical background, he worked with IT and did coding pretty much his entire life. I'm a more artistic background. I graduated Friday and on Monday I was interning with Ashton Kutcher. I was interning with him for about four months, after that I went to the largest local news studio in Los Angeles. After that I went to Funny or Die... after that I went to tech with Jason Calacanis. I've had a whirlwind tour, but growing up with the family I did, the Dodge family, tech and business has always been drilled into me from day one. I have a long-term 21-year bachelor in business.

BI: Where did the inspiration for the design come from?

DD: We took a look at a bunch of different things that had small features that were working. We wanted to build an app using smartphones the way they were meant ot use. No drop-down menus, just swiping. We wanted to see scroll down feeds, menu feeds, we think that's really the way the touchscreen was meant to be used. 

BI: What kind of challenges do you face now?

DD: Right now we're just acquiring users, taking to big brands. We want to go into the local night spots and help them out as well. The Android version is coming next in two to three months, and from there we're talking to club promoters. We're just trying to go nationwide and worldwide. We are completely centered around nightlife, so we believe this is the best place we can share what you were doing last night or what you're doing tonight. We're the operating system for your nightlife.

I've had a whirlwind tour, but growing up with the family I did, the Dodge family, tech and business has always been drilled into me from day one. I have a long-term 21-year bachelor in business.

BI: Where did the inspiration for the design come from?

DD: We took a look at a bunch of different things that had small features that were working. We wanted to build an app using smartphones the way they were meant ot use. No drop-down menus, just swiping. We wanted to see scroll down feeds, menu feeds, we think that's really the way the touchscreen was meant to be used. 

BI: What kind of challenges do you face now?

DD: Right now we're just acquiring users, taking to big brands. We want to go into the local night spots and help them out as well. The Android version is coming next in two to three months, and from there we're talking to club promoters. We're just trying to go nationwide and worldwide. We are completely centered around nightlife, so we believe this is the best place we can share what you were doing last night or what you're doing tonight. We're the operating system for your nightlife.

Bloomberg has compiled a lot of data about Motorola's suppliers on the Bloomberg terminal. It shows just how important some of those suppliers now are to Googorola.

16. Hitachi, a manufacturer of hard drives, accounts for about 0.79% of Apple's costs of goods sold, according to Bloomberg data.

15. Apple buys a bunch of parts from Renesas Electronics, a semiconductor manufacturer. Renesas accounts for about 0.95% of Apple's costs of goods sold.

14. Sumitomo Chemicals develops chemicals and optical materials. It amounts to 1.07% of Apple's costs.
